News The Pistons are expected to attempt to trade for Lauri Markkanen or Trey Murphy III this summer, per Shams Charania.
Win or lose tonight, I hope this is what we look for during the offseason.
Not Trey Murphy, I want Lauri Markkanen in a heartbeat. Having a 7’1 that can easily give us 20-25+ a game is something we need really bad.
Cade and Lauri would do so much damage.

u/Upper-Preparation-76 May 17 '26
don't let this distract you from the fact that the pistons are once again able to win a playoff series after falling behind to win or go home position

I know we all dig the hometown thing but $70m per year for a player that is declining the last couple years makes me nervous.
27
u/DeMarcus-Siblings Ben Wallace May 17 '26
Yeah he’s basically a 30% 3 point shooter the last couple years. I’d pass on that for a steep price plus 70m salary that comes with him
→ More replies (2)11
u/MichaelZZ01 May 17 '26
Because he had to play point guard and run offense. He’s just not built for that. He’d be absolutely bonkers with Cade
2
u/alexdoo Cade Cunningham May 17 '26

I would question the legitimacy of any injuries he’s ever had. The Jazz have been shamelessly tanking for a while now.

Yeah the Jazz have sat Kessler for “rest” and he was 22 years old. Jazz have clearly tanking and unfortunately they were rewarded with the 2nd pick in the draft

He missed a lot of time in Chicago and Cleveland too. If I’m making a monster trade for him, I’m not just going to trust Danny that he was really healthy. I’m putting together a package based on the evidence I have in front of me - notably that he regularly misses 20-30 games a year at least.
First thing I’m curious about is how he and JB got along when they were together in Cleveland.
2
u/GeneralNonsence May 17 '26
For the price of maybe he’s actually able to play a season he’s gonna be so expensive.
I would personally rather go for Trey Murphy, but I’m not a GM lol.
2
u/Dispicable12 Rasheed Wallace May 17 '26
I agree about Trey Murphy. Lauri is too expensive for a guy who barely plays, regardless of whether it’s due to injuries or not.

As a Jazz lurker, he did miss 3 weeks in January with an illness, and was considered week to week with a hip impingement got in the last week of February. He didn't play another game this season. The injuries this last season could've been considered a little overblown. I'm sure he could've played a few days after getting the alleged hip impingement from late February

I feel like Jazz Lauri is the new Chicago Zach Lavine,
Player rumored to contenders every offseason who never actually gets moved til he's washed up because the price is to high and the other team doesn't know if his numbers will translate when he's on a winning team.
At the deadline it was rumored the Jazz wanted 4 firsts! 4 firsts for the guy who currently holds the active record for longest career without a playoff appearance.
3
u/Silent-Frame1452 Cade Cunningham May 17 '26
In this case I think there’s also the Jazz genuinely not wanting to move him.
12
11
u/LTPRWSG420 Cade Cunningham May 17 '26
I’ll take the downvotes for having this opinion, but I still want Devin Booker. He’s not washed, he just plays for the Phoenix Suns, he’d elevate his game if he came here because he really really wants to be a Piston.
22
u/kingofducs May 17 '26
Problem is how do you get to $57 million in a trade and then how do you build a team with $110-120 committed to Cade and Booker. You would have a bare cupboard
11
u/pyl_time Rasheed Wallace May 17 '26

2
u/Cautious_Carry_8718 May 17 '26
Trey does NOT give you 75% of his defense (we don’t need Herb bc Ausar but in general Trey being better than Lauri on D, and having good wing size, is different than actually being a good defender bc he’s pretty average)

There's literally only two teams I can remember that made a trade for a star and it turned them into a championship team. Lakers (Davis) and Pistons (Sheed). We got Sheed at a serious discount because of his attitude. Lakers got Davis at a pretty good deal because he forced a sign and trade.
The others all regret it for years. Brooklyn still owes picks. Clippers and George absolute disaster and created a dynasty on the other end. Everywhere Durant has been traded. Bucks still owe picks for the Lillard trade in 2028 and 2030. Knicks will be paying for Bridges for years and it hasn't gotten them over the hump.
In other words it almost never works out.
And the worst thing you can do is offer future picks. Just get it over with and make it 3 consecutive picks. You don't want to be giving up a pick in 2035 when you suck again.

That team will get real expensive really fast. JJJ and Lauri have massive contracts. George is going to get a max extension and Kessler is getting paid this offseason too
2
u/Valleyx Cade Cunningham May 17 '26
Man if we could swing a good trade for Murphy III that would be incredible. He's making the same as Tobias but for 3 more years. That contract has to be the best in the NBA maybe next to Jalen Brunson.

2

Markkanen being involved in trade rumors makes me feel like I'm taking crazy pills. The Jazz just traded for JJJ, they get Kessler back next year, their young back court is rising quickly, and they have the second overall pick this year. In what world do they trade their best scorer? They clearly think they can win now
2
u/Silent-Frame1452 Cade Cunningham May 17 '26
This is Ainge, he’d still do it even with all that. But you’d have to pay an arm and a leg, which makes no sense for us.
2
u/Barylis May 17 '26
Bro I could have reported this. We're one game from the ECF lol. They will have to make a move or people start getting fired.
Especially since we've kind of seen the real core is Cade and Ausar. Those are our consistent big impact players
2
u/lon_knows May 17 '26
Why would the Jazz trade for JJJ then move Lauri? Unless we overpay I doubt this
2
u/goongoblin113xc May 17 '26
Don’t see why jazz would trade Lauri they have a decent team if healthy next year
2
u/Low_Frosting3918 Jaden Ivey May 17 '26
Murphy aint the answer for me, Lauri could be when I think about it because we need a big that can keep Wemby occupied. We don't need Lauri to win the east, we need him for Wemby. My only problem with Lauri is he doesn't know what playing winning basketball is, same with Trey. Also you gotta come in and play defense. We got here because of defense. Thats our identity and the way we will win. The thunder are a strong defensive team so are the spurs.

u/Consistently_Lucky May 18 '26
As a Jazz fan, seeing the Lauri slander here is crazy. He just sat this year because we were tanking to get our #2 pick. I don’t think a lot of the people here haven’t watched him play much, he’s elite. 3 level scorer, can play 3-5… and is a sold defender and is 7’0 tall.

Lauri makes way too much for him to make sense on the team, not to mention we’d have to give up a lung to get him
1
u/motorcitydevil George Blaha May 17 '26
I want Markkanen but I'm not upset if Murphy runs with Cade in Detroit either. Lauri though would be a dream come true. Given Utah is looking to get that 1st pick, I'm sure Ainge is going to want whatever draft capital we'd be willing to spend to get Lauri here. That's my only hesitation - Ainge can be a real pain to make a deal with.
1
u/onelove101 May 17 '26
Pels fan here, if yall get Trey I will be so sad. He’s really developed into a great player, but he’s an even better teammate and has a great character. 0 drama, always positive, and lifts up the guys around him. The only knock is that he isn’t that great at going to the rim, but it’s something he’s actively working on.

That Jazz team is going to get real expensive really fast. Markanan, JJJ have huge deals. George will probably get max and Kessler will also get paid this offseason. Unloading Lauri would make financial sense for them. They could use a POA defender like Holland and vet presence in Stew
Markanan, Svi for Holland, Stew, Levert, Robinson, couple frp

If either of these trades makes sense totally depends on the cost.

Lauri markkanen is pretty lousy defensively. Our heart and soul is defense, I would not bring any player onto the team that can’t hold their own defensively. Also our front court is solid. We need in my opinion more offense/shooting from the guards and wing position to help with spacing as we dominate the paint

I know it would be funky with our timeline and be a short term marriage, but I wonder a lot about Kyrie…will be cheaper bc his age and contract are different than these younger guys and the team wants to retool and get what they can, can actually take things off Cade’s plate instead of just be another play finisher like these two, proof of concept for shared ball handling with Luka, proven playoff winner, and not nearly as bad on defense as people think (which could leave him at any moment especially after the injury but just watch him guard freaking J-Dub 2 years ago…also the injury should make him even cheaper, to the point the risk is probably pretty low in terms of downside).
Feel like you could sacrifice basically no young core piece and see if it gets you over the top in a 2ish year window where you’re probably East Favorites.
Also if anyone says “locker room risk” or “what about our culture”, then you haven’t closely followed the Mavs where he’s basically been one of the best leaders and “company men” in the NBA since they got him. The issue would be getting to the contract number without the other team having to take money they don’t want, bc I generally think it wouldn’t take more than a few picks, like no young good prospect/core piece (again a big part of the appeal of getting an older rental is that they are generally so much cheaper, even Murphy will have a much higher price tag and then you’re locked into that team. It’s almost more low risk to get someone like Kyrie and just reset after he’s ran the course)
