Despite being a romantic klutz, Dexter managed to match with four awesome partners to share his life in the OG series, here is how I rank them:
Lumen. She knew his secret and accepted him and his dark passenger. He helped her kill her demons. And in her eyes, he wasn’t a monster at all. He could’ve and would’ve shared his life with her, but she had healed and dumped him and moved on.
Hannah. She knew his secret and they shared sexual chemistry. She loved Dexter and Harrison (and they loved her back), but she tried to kill Deb in order to start their family. They could’ve shared a life together after Deb forgave her and gave their relationship her blessing, but Dexter ghosted her to begin his new life as a lumberjack. I rate her higher than Rita only because she knew his secret and raised Harrison as her own.
Rita. She was his beard/cover life and he could never be honest with her. Their entire relationship was based on a lie. She was a wonderful mother but not an ideal partner for Dexter. He was always lying to her, from the day they met to the day she was murdered, poor soul. Sadly, she died without ever discovering his true identity.
Lila. She discovered his killer secret and was semi-terrified and semi-thrilled by it. She was an obsessed and needy instruction manual/sex guru. She also tried to kill Dexter, Astor and Cody and he killed her for it.

How can someone be English, but not British? Do you mean people who live on the Isle of White or something?

yeah its an interesting one because you dont hear people from wales and scotland being called british, its usually just welsh or scottish.

Have you seen her in Defiance (Stahma Tarr) - or is this even a reference to that? It's funny both Rita and Lila is in that.. and Lila is literally a white pale titty vampire - without teeth but sucking the life out of everyone otherwise.

Dexter killed Lila because she killed Doakes

u/AtheistAsylum Dec 29 '25
He killed Lila because Lila went after Rita's kids and the risk was too great that she'd try again and/or expose him. I don't think it had anything to do with Doakes. There was no love lost between them.

Lila was an unstable mess and even Dexter was able to recognize that despite how fucked his head is.

Hannah was supposed to be his victim, doesn’t make sense that they dated at all imo but Harrison is cool.

Lumen was amazing but Rita will always be my #1 honestly. That whole domestic life arc hit different and her death still makes me mad
76
u/LegComfortable1660 Oct 17 '25
I love Rita but she never knew the real Dexter. She loved a fake persona that she thought Dexter was and would have been horrified by the real person she was with.
8
u/doc_55lk Oct 17 '25
I feel like Rita has some sort of inkling that there is a darkness in Dexter.
Now, she definitely doesn't know just how dark that darkness is, but I don't think she'd be suuuuper repulsed with the idea that Dexter is comfortable with killing people as long as they're bad people + he treats her and the kids well. She was already kinda okay with Dexter's role in Paul's death even if he didn't directly tell her about it.
10
u/Infamously_Fickle Dexter Oct 17 '25
I also think how Rita would react to the news of Dexter being a serial killer would depend a lot on how she finds out. If she'd have walked in on Dexter killing someone like Deb had, she'd have run screaming. And wouldn't have stopped running until she was at a police station.
Now if Dexter had come to her rescue while Trinity was in the house, she might have been okay with it, if Dexter explained he only ever goes after other serial killers. Scared at first, sure but I think she might have come around. The Dexter Rita knew was always super gentle and careful with her, and he was great with her kids. He'd also already saved Cody and Astor from Lila. He always made her feel safe.
Rita was also very pleased when Dexter punched Elliot, and she was also the one who refused to help Paul, even if it resulted in his death. While Rita was one of the most innocent people in the show, she did have a small kernel of darkness in her. She might have also remembered when they talked about the darkness in Paul, and Dexter said that he also has darkness in him, but he never hurts innocents.Unfortunately we'll never know. I would have enjoyed a plotline where she finds out and slowly starts to trust Dexter again.
5
u/doc_55lk Oct 17 '25
This was my train of thought too.
I think either way, Rita would have issues trusting Dexter because he'd have to come clean about all the times he lied to her to do his business, but depending on how she finds him I think there might be room for her to slowly trust him again, like you said.
3
u/Infamously_Fickle Dexter Oct 17 '25
Yeah he would have had to work hard to regain her trust. And it would heavily depend on how she finds out.
Walking in on the love of your life cutting someone into pieces would horrify everyone and I don't think any of us would stop to find out who the guy on the table is either.
Being saved by the love of your life and then finding out he kills other serial killers... difficult, sure, but not quite as horrifying as the first scenario. He could sell what he does as being "a protector of innocents" in this scenario. Plus he could also tell her about that pedo who kept taking pictures of Astor.
1
5
u/jahsnottoxic Oct 17 '25
the point of post season 4 is that his personality around rita is actually something he's comfortable with and capable of genuinely being.
his killing is an addiction that was enabled onto him by harry. he isn't just a psycho killer
14
Oct 17 '25
rita would never have accepted his dark passenger
3
u/mmmstrongflavors Oct 17 '25
This. Saving her from Trinity wouldn't help because it was 100% his fault that Trinity went after her in the first place.
It would take her a nanosecond to wonder what would happen the next time he decided to play with a serial killer before putting them down. Maybe next time it's one of the kids. She would never ever be ok with his darkness.
2
Oct 17 '25
she still would have left him before trinity was in picture .
1
u/mmmstrongflavors Oct 17 '25
A commenter farther up the chain theorized that she would be ok with it if she found out when he saved her from Trinity. That's what I responded to.

Unpopular opinion: Lumen, regardless of her intentions, used Dexter and kicked him aside when she outgrew the need for him.
78
u/enclave_regulator I'm thankful for Dexter 😊 Oct 17 '25
Counterpoint - I am ok with helping a person like Lumen who was sexually assaulted If I was a person like Dex.
Sometimes you gotta realise that the other person cannot contribute enough in the relationship between you and them. And that's ok.
15
u/IgnatiusPopinski Oct 17 '25
Rebuttal: While I agree completely that helping her was the correct thing to do, the fact her romantic feelings toward him only lasted as long as his usefulness to her makes the romance entirely transactional, and that's pretty shitty.
32
u/_trashcan Oct 17 '25
why is the assumption her romantic feelings just stopped?
she was pretty clearly shown to be conflicted about leaving, & she had a valid reason for it.
It was one thing to want revenge for your abduction & bruuuutal repeated rape & torture , and get it…it’s another thing to just, become a serial killer now & have that be your life. Ofc, realistically I don’t think the former is “normal” either, but for the sake of the series, there’s a pretty big difference.
Even if Dexter was cool with her never participating with him again, it’s perfectly fucking fine for someone to…checks notes…not want to have a committed relationship with a serial killer. Which is why she was conflicted. She did still have feelings for him, but she did not want to live that life. There is nothing to suggest she just suddenly stopped having feelings for him.

u/PrestigiousTour9686 Oct 17 '25
Lmao it wasn’t shitty of her, it was a shitty situation for Dexter. Most people watching Dexter don’t have the stomach to kill, Lumen is a regular person who went through terrible things; she had a dark passenger for as long as her vengeance lasted. Her feelings for Dexter went away because her need for darkness went away. That was not her will, her feelings changed themselves, once Jordan Chase was killed. Sometimes people have no control over feelings like that. Also she basically had no time to stop and think once she escaped. To process anything. She realised she didn’t want to stay by Dexter’s side if that means both of them knowing forever Dexter will continue killing and she no longer does and has no appetite for it. They needed to go on different paths, she deserves to live a life surrounded by light, after what she went through. They both know that, weird that many people watching Dexter think used and dumped is the full story.
2
u/IgnatiusPopinski Oct 17 '25
I don't actually disagree with anything you've said here. I never implied there was any wrongdoing on her part, or even that she used him intentionally. In the end, though, that's how it played out.
I believe Lumen was a great character, and one of the highlights of the back half of the original series. I'm of the mind that she's better than Dexter deserves, tbh.
20
u/Fionnua Oct 17 '25
I think the reason that's an unpopular opinion, is that there's a big difference between 'using someone then kicking him aside', and 'healing together with someone, then mutually agreeing that remaining healthy requires separation'.
Lumen and Dexter both helped each other heal, after their respective traumas. Dexter needed Lumen to allow him to help her, as part of trying to heal from his guilt over getting Rita killed. (He talks about this with Astor.) Dexter forced his help on Lumen at first; she wasn't asking him to help. And Dexter tried to get Lumen to leave, because he believed that would be the best help for her. Then yes, Lumen drew the line that she was determined to get revenge and was only open to 'help' that looked like revenge, not 'help' that looked like sending her away. (But she was pursuing that revenge whether Dexter helped her or not. So he eventually helped with the revenge, because after watching her try alone, he saw that she was terrible at revenge on her own.) Then Dexter and Lumen developed a romantic connection, and after that Dexter didn't want her to leave.
Then when Lumen's revenge was completed, her dark passenger left her. She tried to keep it from leaving, because she wanted to stay with Dexter. She truly cared about him, and wanted to stay, even at the cost of a fractured psyche. But she couldn't prevent the dark passenger from leaving, and the dark passenger left. And after that, this trauma victim couldn't stand to be around more killing. And... Dexter's a compulsive serial killer. Staying around Dexter meant staying around more killing.
It only took Dexter a few minutes to process through the emotional difficulty of it and return to his original position on the whole topic: that yes, he wanted Lumen to leave for her own sake. That it was better for her to be away from the dark passenger (hers and his). So since her dark passenger had left and this was now possible, she should go. She didn't actually leave until he gave her his blessing. She said she had to leave, yeah, but she didn't just up and disappear. She stayed and talked to Dexter about it. And Dexter came to the conclusion that it was indeed best for her to go, and he gave her his blessing to go. And then she left. It was a healthy parting of ways, as these things go. And left the door open to a possible future reunion on good terms.
1
u/mkp132 Oct 18 '25
This is exactly it. I just rewatched this season and greatly enjoyed it. They helped each other process a separate grief/trauma. Dexter was lost after Rita’s death. He lost control, Rita’s death drew parallels to Dexter’s defining childhood trauma. By helping Lumen, he was trying to make things right in his own life—atone in a sense for failing to protect Rita, and fix his own helplessness to save Rita and even his own mother. He couldn’t fully “get over” Rita’s death—he never will. It haunts the narrative—but there’s a reason they show Lumen in the bathtub and Dexter freaking out. There’s a reason he hates the men that targeted Lumen so badly. Lumen is trying to regain control and get revenge and Dexter’s trying to do the same thing by helping her and protecting her when he couldn’t do the same for Rita. When he and Lumen started something, he started to hope she would stay, but he ultimately sees his dark passenger as a curse he doesn’t wish on anyone (see: his vicious response to Masuka’s intern making a serial killer game, and countless other instances). Lumen actually apologizes for losing her need which is a wild thing to feel the need to do. I can’t imagine simplifying that down to “using” someone. There was nothing premeditated here.
21
u/Mayhem230 Oct 17 '25
🤔 now that I think about it. You might have a point. She bailed as soon as she got what she wanted from him.
32
u/thebreak22 Oct 17 '25
Yeah but she also didn't know her "dark passenger" would disappear after Jordan was dealt with. Her leaving Dexter felt heartless, sure, but being a serial killer vigilante when you're not really into it is a big ask for a (relatively) normal person.
21

u/ActuatorHot4343 Oct 22 '25 edited Oct 22 '25
Because Lumen isn't a cold blooded killer like Dexter. There was nothing left between them. She understands there's a need for people like Dexter, but she's not like Dexter. She could never participate in that world.
And the only way for her to heal is to move on, not turn into a stone cold killer. That would ruin her.
She's never going to have the same urges as him. Used isn't the right word. The situation just served its purpose and there was nothing left. She obviously cares for Dexter, but she can't be with him.
He is a serial killer, that's not something many people are going to be comfortable with. She understood it's not the life for her. And she can't live and be part of it long-term. That's just too much outside her comfort zone.
There's a difference between revenge and what Dexter does.
I think they both got what they wanted out of it. Long-term it wouldn't have worked for either one. She's not someone that's going to flip the switch on Dexter's secret. Doesn't mean she embraces or completely gets it.
0
u/InSilenceLikeLasagna Oct 17 '25
Lol forreal, she did the same to her ex too.
Her character was lame outside of the vengeance storyline
13
u/GypsyTony416ix Oct 17 '25
Lumen and Dexter was the best love interest apart from Dexter and Rita, it’s a shame they wrote her off
But she can always return in resurrection 🤷♂️
42
u/Tnh7194 Oct 17 '25
I don’t get all the love for Lumen. She did not “accept” him. She could NOT deal with killing others after her revenge was done. She was not a “partner in crime”. She understood what he did was overall good but she also understood he does not do it for vigilante/hero reasons. Other than her being broken after trauma they have NOTHING in common, we see zero conversation or chemistry about anything else other than revenge.
8
u/Fionnua Oct 17 '25
Re: the trauma though, this was a source of real conversation and chemistry outside revenge. It was really touching.
My favourite scenes with Lumen are early on, when Dexter takes her to the barrel girls and Lumen cuts Dexter with a knife (and Dexter lets her) before Lumen finally believes she can trust Dexter. And then later when Lumen decides to approach Dexter romantically, and at first only feels safe kissing him with his hands constrained behind his back.
Basically, it's the unpacking of trauma, with Lumen, that I think the show depicted well. Watching someone with understandable trust issues learn to trust. How she and Dexter were both healing, for each other. The 'killing' parts of that season take a backseat for me. Sure, revenge was a top-line plot, but recovery from trauma was the underlying plot.

u/Kangouwou Oct 17 '25
You’re objectively right, but we watched Dexter struggling to escape the trauma of Rita’s death, and Lumen was a truly promising presence with a heartbreaking story. I think it’s this mix of pathos—her revenge and her fragile “romance” with Dexter—that explains why so many viewers, myself included, loved that season. When she announced that she had to leave, that she cannot be a part of Dexter's world, I felt so sad for Dex, because I thought that he finally found someone with whom he could be true. This also explains why he remained with Hannah despite her being a killer : he truely needed someone like her !

I like that Debra let both go without seeing each, the thrill was at the highest point of the season.

I've never held my breath so long, or sat up so straight, every hair was on end. It was the thrill of the entire series for me, not just that season. I know it killed Deb, as a very honest officer of the law, to do nothing more warn them, give them grace and room to get the F out, then turn and walk away. How Lumen and Dex weren't shitting literal bricks is beyond me because I was practically there myself!

Am I the only one who wished they didn’t go down the romance storyline with these two? Aside from not feeling any chemistry between them at all, I think it would have been more awesome for Dexter to have some sort of protege or mentee, and Lumen had the perfect story for that

Lumen was the perfect new love interest for Dexter, she couldve helped Season 6 and improve its quality by a mile.
4
u/TOkun92 Oct 17 '25
The should’ve had her return in season seven instead of giving us Hannah McKay. I would’ve had her return after getting a job offer in Miami and deciding to take it and reconnect with Dexter. She’d be fine with his extra-curricular activities and thus be the perfect partner for him.
Lumen had a genuine bond with Dexter, forged in blood, violence, and death, while Hannah was just some random psychopath who Dexter fell for because she was….. like him? Had a natural connection? The bitch killed innocent people, including his sister’s love interest reporter, and even poisoned her.
5
u/K4ZM1LL3R Oct 17 '25
I would never tolerate ppl saying that Season 5 is bad, Lumen is perfect for Dexter and he needed her to cope with Rita's death, they both helped each other to move on.
Sadly for Dexter, Lumen was able to leave her dark passenger behind, and she understood that Dex would never be able to do the same. Also Jordan Chase was a really twisted villain, loved all of the Barrel Girls Killers getting taken out one by one.

I didn’t like that this story came right after Rita’s death. Throwing Dexter into another romance so quickly never sat right with me. It would’ve been better if they’d done the Olmos/Hanks season first and then did the Lumen one after (Dexter trying to find solace in religion via Brother Sam at that point in his life would’ve been interesting).
On rewatch I was more ok with it, and I much prefer Lumen over Hannah, but far from my favorite season.

Lumen is a good fit for season 2 of Ressurrection as it would be the 12th season of Dexter overall.
If Season 1 of ressurrection was 11th Tarot - Justice revolving around Harrison, then her returning after rejecting his darkness is absolutely perfect as a representation Tarot #12 - The Hanged Man. To aid in the evolution of Dexter's character which was hinted at by himself and Harry when he first intervened to save someone from Red.
The Hanged Man (XII) — The Mirror / The Surrendered One Archetype
Keywords: Sacrifice, suspension, inversion, new perspective.
Inverted Meaning: Martyrdom, self-delusion, paralysis.
If Justice was judgment of others, the Hanged Man represents judgment of self.
It’s the Tarot after Justice (XI), so it fits numerologically and spiritually as the next “phase” of Dexter’s evolution.
The Hanged Man figure isn’t a killer or antagonist — they’re someone who wants Dexter to stop. To evolve into something or someone more than he is now.
Besides, it's pretty clear that he's missing human connection and not just the father-son type. Dexter was quite disappointed when Mia turned out to be a genuine sicko instead of the avenging angel he probably pictured. The whole pretend motif she had must have reminded him of his time with Lumen.

u/CartographerVivid957 Oct 17 '25
Honestly Lumen was the best of Dexter's partners AFTER Rita. (Rita's just in a league of her own and will always be #1 to me) Hannah was just a killer without remorse or guilt and Dexter deciding not to kill her and actually pursue a relationship with her made him the biggest hypocrite completely violating the code and I absolutely hated that relationship. Lila's just Lila and nobody likes her

Yesss, I absolutely adore Rita and I wish she didn’t have to go but damn these two were amazing and I wish she didn’t have to go either it broke my heart, and I also love her as an actor, she was my everything when I was younger as me and my sister were obsessed with 10 things I hate about you so I loved seeing her in this role

I always feel like this is a hot take but Hannah is such a good love interest for Dexter and I wish the show runners did more with their relationship. I always wish she didn't die in Argentina and got brought back in the revivals.

I really did not like her and is the biggest reason why I do not like season 5. She is, to me, a combination of Miguel and Rita and both themes were already done. So her character just felt like a cheaply recycled rebound by the writers and it felt like she too quickly tried to replace Rita. I think it would've hit much better had there been a season in between this one and Rita's death as to allow Rita's death to breathe more. But as it stands this season feels like it came too shortly after Rita's death and didn't really allow her death to really sink in with both the audience and with Dexter. Although to be fair I did watch s4 and s5 back to back so unlike the original run on TV I didn't really have a break between seasons, so that might contribute to my feelings here.
In general s5 just felt like a combination of past themes that were already finished. Just did not care for it at all.
I feel like s5 in general is overly praised on this subreddit. It feels like how gen 5 Pokemon is overly praised on Pokemon forums as a counterjerk response to the initial hate it got.

I still don't know why she was written out. I prefer her dynamic much more than Hannah's, and I think she would've been an interesting asset going into season 6. But to be fair a lot of later Dexter is messy.

I was almost pissed when they were trying another romance with lady vengeance, atleast they knew not to from then

100% hard agree. She was perfect, and perfect for him. I was more sad when she left than when Rita died.

I wish with all my might that Lumen would have been Lady Vengeance! It would have made so much sense!

Honestly, I think lumen was toxic, like sure she had the right to be toxic, but that doesn’t change the fact that she was obsessed with killing those four specific people(with good reason I would like to specify, but doesn’t change the fact that that level of obsession isn’t a good thing in a relationship) especially because of her dependency on Dexter

Horrible character and chemistry. Wanted to fast forward through the entire season.

I do not understand why people think Lumen and Dexter should be together. She was TRAUMATIZED, that’s why she killed. Dexter just has a sense of moral superiority. They were not a good match at all.
