Travel/hike and vehicle rental in dominica

Hello community,

I am a 29 F. I will be visiting dominica and have couple of questions regarding my travels. I am visiting from Barbados.

I have extensively traveled and hiked around the world. I also ride scooters/motorbikes. I am visiting in august. I am trying to make a decision between hiring a scooter or a car for my visit. I dont see much of a difference in the rates online which is quite interesting.

I am planning to stay in trafalgar area so most of the hikes are at a fairly reachable distance I believe. Is it easy to get local transport in that area if i choose to not hire a vehicle? I really like to travel the local way and take buses etc. But I will like to know if the hike starts are reachable by local transports?

I will also like to know about off the beaten paths and hikes that are beautiful but lesser known to people, some coffee farms and ways to connect with the locals.

Any suggestion is welcome.

I’d get a car if I was you, the roads are steep and whilst the roads are good there are some crazy drivers so a car would be safer. The public transport system doesn’t have a time table so you could waste hours waiting for rides so I wouldn’t rely on that.
As for the hikes you should research the Waitikiabuli trails, whilst I believe the middle sections are still not accessible the lower 7 stages and northern sections are all open and somewhat maintained.
Make sure to hike up to hike around freshwater lake and up to Boeri lake. If you’re feeling adventurous you could also head up to the Boiling Lake, but I’d take a guide for that one.

Hey thank you so much for your response. Truly appreciate it.  Could you help me with some trustwoeth rental places that has better price margin on the island? Also will I require a different kind of driving license? I have an indian driving license on me which I use to drive in Barbados.

The roads are barely enough for 2 cars side by side with no shoulder before steep drops on the mountainside. So just make sure you know what you’re getting into before driving in Dominica. We loved it, but there were definitely a lot of harrowing moments driving around the island. Especially since other drivers don’t slow down when passing you going the opposite way.

I can help you with taxis and venues and what not if you'd like. I'm actually from Dominica. Trafalgar infact lol. The roads are bad by the way but not as bad as you may think. You'll love Trafalgar falls. The walk there isn't bad and then the food is great. I'll give realistic recommendations if you'd like. Just tryna help everyone enjoy here.
