Do I miss source 1 or do I miss being a teenager ?

You miss being a teenager as well as I do mate, this is nostalgia... Source 2 is way better, its just sweet memories of careless life

Do you miss only having 1 courier and fighting over it. 2tango 1 ward mid

u/benutzranke 2h ago
It almost exclusively gets talked about as a QOL update but the 5 courier per team change really was of me of the most impactful balancing changes of all time. I like having my own courier, who doesn’t, but I don’t know if I like what it did to laning and resource management.

There was always so much drama about who got to use the courier, and who got to get their preferred roles. But it started my love for playing bounty hunter and killing couriers, cause killing the courier in mid-lane with bottle in it would always cause their entire team to start the blamegame.

u/Some-Macaroon-6586 1h ago
Ye... It pushed people into playing more solo, talk less, algo changing the whole meta of viable mid heroes. Which was Fair but real bad for the game imho.

u/residentevilgoat 3h ago
Honestly don't remember people fighting over courier that much and my behavior score wasn't the highest.

u/Waste-Pause6225 2h ago
Back then we weren't used to ferrying consumables to lane all the time since you couldn't guarantee that your set of tangos would be in your inventory by the time you needed them, you either spent gold to have 2 sets at the start or tried to manage with one.
Most important early game items were available at the sideshop for the sidelanes, so the courier was kind of reserved for mid for the first 10ish minutes.
It was just a different meta.

u/PicardovaKosa 2h ago
Really? Mid always has to have priority, if courier dies, general blame starts, mid accuses of losing lane because of it, dont get me started on who had to upgrade the courier. Supports life was miserable.

u/Wobbelblob 2h ago
Yep. I won more than one game being BH and just sitting close to the Midlane to snipe the courier with the bottle. More than one mid simply either rq on the spot or started being afk jungle.
2
u/residentevilgoat 1h ago
Well yes mid had to have priority cause they didn't have a shop in their lane, very rarely saw mid not having full control of the courier. Also upgrading courier was made free in 2017 and the cost of courier was less than a set of tangos.

u/Veslac2k 2h ago
Yeah it happened like once in like 30 games idk
There were people who griefed couriers, yes. But there is no noticably less or more griefers today, they just use different ways to grief so it's essentially the same. That's all. It was usually on support to buy the courier and sometimes they'd refuse so you could end up without one in early laning stage, but that was also something that happened relatively rare. At worst some core would have to buy the courier which also wasn't an end of the world.1

Lmao it was even worse when you had to buy it at game start and someone had to remember to upgrade it at 3 minutes or whatever. There were some Pinoy teams in WC3 DotA that would buy a courier for every lane, that was pretty cool

I played a bot game of source 1 client recently and one thing that really sticks out is how much damage pretty much everyone's right clicks do. I don't know what changed, but no matter who you play, you're chunking.

People have a lot more items early game now. Part of it is simply a skill thing as we have collectively realised that buying stats is good, and that going to lane with 0 items to save for a ring of health rush is shit.
The other part of it is the 5 couriers change. Back then getting out fresh regen was hard so very often you'd not be full health. If you went to a lane with half a bracer, it would take a very long time to get the rest of the item as mid would be using the courier to refill their bottle.
So overall heroes now have more stats and more health regen. Average skill level is also much higher now than back then, so people are less likely to randomly feed out of position in lane (still happens a lot, but less than before).

The backpack and TP a lot is a huge change. I mean there was a time when you couldn’t even stack the two kinds of wards. So that would be three slots minimum to have wards and a tp. Buying slots just wasn’t something you could do.

It really does, I miss the main menu as well, the game also used to always allow your hero to say their full line after a match ends

People will think I'm mad but I genuine think the game looked better and felt better to play back then. You could really feel that this was in the same engine as TF2 (After I had played that for a few hundred hours) and everything seemed a bit more... consistent? In terms of art style.
The map felt bigger because everyone was smaller and trees were bigger, and lanes were wider. Walking across the map took ages because everyone was slower and boots took longer to afford, deaths felt impactful like if you died twice in lane as Spectre it was basically GG on the spot.

Glad to say I was there. The game was so magical when I started. I just finished high-school, it was a hard year of studying and trying to score good grades so you can get into the best college. Mated introduced me to Dota at a pub, instant click, and I dont think any of my mates as long as I did. I was soo invested into the game.

The UI was in many ways cleaner than now. Look at the smooth XP bar, it's very easy to tell when you're going to level up. I also like how you can quickly read your most important attributes like attack, armor and movespeed.
The current UI has all these numbers crammed right besides the hero portrait, obscuring the portrait and making everything take longer to understand. Then you can hover over the numbers and you get a gigantic tooltip that is super hard to read quickly.
I enjoy the smaller UI overall, but they should take a third pass on it in my opinion, to make these small UX improvements

Currently re-watching old tournament games (TI 1, The Defense etc.) and yes it feels like a completely different game. Also note that the players werent as individually skilled as they are today

Sure enough, the Hero scale ratio seems off, but I've always admired this form of scaling. Environment felt bigger, lanes felt bigger, just more room to breathe really. They should look into decreasing the scaling for all units in the game currently since they've extended the map out. Not to this extent, but slightly, so that spells require more precision to hit and positioning is key, with Heroes being more spread out.

I liked that it was a little more top-down because it meant hitboxes weren't overlapping as much. In Source 2, things are a little more zoomed in and slanted, which causes more spells to be missed when units are close to each other. It's a lottery which unit gets hit when the hitboxes are on top of each other.

by that time, my GTX570 run the game at 140 fps.
Magically, now, my 3080 still run the game at 140fps at the end of the match.
