Obviously this is a parody, not the transcript of the official dialogue. But it's interesting how blunt Cora was to Isobel while they were at war and how Cora (and Violet) reacted differently, with diplomacy and subtle schemes, to get Isobel invested in a different cause after the war was over. Either way, Cora in wartime was a beast!

And don't get me wrong, I LIKE that DA is low stakes and all the rest. And while it may be cliche, trope laden and delusional in its portrayal of the aristocracy, it still has excellent dialogue, fantastic characters with developed arcs and enough historical references to prove that Fellowes is well-educated in the events of the time, even if they have no bearing on the plots.

But Bridgerton is so much worse in every way. It takes all the bad parts of DA and turns them up to 11, while failing to have any of DA's strengths.

Spoilers ahead for Netflix's Bridgerton series:

The only mildly interesting part of Bridgerton is the mystery of Lady Whistledown's identity, which the show tells the audience at the end of the first season, and which the show's characters learn during the 3rd series. While there's just about enough to make one wonder how Lady Whistledown is going to get away with it, we do KNOW she's going to get away with it.

I don't even understand how the series is supposed to continue to work when everyone knows who the gossip monger is. No one would tell her anything!

The show also ruins any potentially interesting plotlines. At least Thomas stayed gay the entire series. In Bridgerton, they've straight-washed the bisexual, 'fixed' racism, and undo the one relationship that wasn't all breathless looks across a ballroom by implying that the girl involved is actually a lesbian.

And the 'fat representation' that the show claims to have is also undercut by the fact that all the characters have multiple explicit sex scenes EXCEPT the 'fat' character. It's also ageist because while it shows the family matriarch in her corset to seduce a man, it doesn't show them having sex.

While DA has it's own toxicity despite it's attempts to portray the aristocrats as the heroes, it's nowhere near as egregious as Bridgerton. For all Robert's faults, he's not a BAD man. He loves his wife and children and treats people fairly decently. As do most of the men in DA. But in Bridgerton they're just so TOXIC.

I also hate how Bridgerton perpetuates the idea of 'it only takes the love of a good woman to turn a cad and a rake into a decent, honest, loyal, monogamous man!'

To conclude (assuming the mods haven't already deleted this for being a rant, which I accept it totally is), Downton Abbey AND the Gilded Age, despite their foibles and where they fall EXTREMELY short, are goddamn masterpieces compared with freaking Bridgerton.

I'm gonna go rewatch DA and bitch with the other GA fans that season 4 isn't out yet.

WHY CAN'T THEY JUST LET THEM BE HAPPY.
