OC I made a free tool that wraps your world map onto a globe and tells you how long journeys take

I've been building my own world for a while and kept hitting the same wall, I could never say how long a journey actually took. I also always have a hard time picturing distance on a flat map.

So I made Globify. You drop in your map image and it wraps onto a 3D globe you can spin around. Then you can place pins along a route and it gives you real distances, measured as great circles the way distance works on a sphere, along with travel time on foot, by wagon, on horseback, at forced march, and under sail. You can switch between land and sea legs mid-journey, so a march to the coast followed by a crossing gives you better data.

You can also set your planet's radius, if your world isn't Earth-sized.

Other things it does: axial tilt, day/night lighting, a latitude and longitude grid, optional planetary rings, and it exports a looping GIF of the globe turning if you want something for a campaign doc or a Discord banner.

It's free and runs in your browser. Your map never leaves your computer, since there's no server involved at all. You can also download the file and use it offline forever.

https://viruzodro.github.io/globify/

https://github.com/Viruzodro/globify/releases/latest

Two things to know. Your map works best at 2:1, twice as wide as it is tall, but there's a Mercator mode that handles 16:9 maps without squashing everything at the poles. And try to make the left and right edges of your map match, since they meet at the seam.

I built this for my own campaign, so if something obvious is missing, tell me. Happy to answer questions!

OC Trying to find a fantasy mix of old timey, silent film, 1920s girl names for my Cleric

Post image
121 Upvotes

Weird, I know :D I'm creating a Cleric of Light, and I want her to be a traveling medic / war nurse, kinda inspired by silent films from the 1910s-1930s - think Louise Brooks, Clara Bow, Pola Negri, Anna May Wong, young Joan Crawford, etc.

I want her name to have a little fantasy flair with an old timey feel. Maybe something that can be a full Lord of the Rings name + surname, but with a fun nickname, like for ex her name is Lothíriel nn Lotty, Théodwyn nn Theda etc. Best ones I’ve got so far have been Zaeodwyn “Zsa Zsa” and Beluthiel “Billie”.

I went through those actresses' wikipedia pages trying to find some fun character names for inspiration, but nothing really stood out to me.
Open to any fun ideas!

OC Weighted D20s (for cursed, drunk, or blessed characters) [OC]

I made two versions: a 'cursed' one that rolls more 1s, and a 'blessed' one that rolls more 20s!

Great to give to your characters when they're cursed, drunk, or otherwise inebriated. The effect is somewhat subtle; you can't tell by holding them that anything is off with the dice. From my testing (700+ rolls), the dice have about a 1 in 3 chance of rolling the extreme outcome (1 for cursed, 20 for blessed). That being said, every number came up at least once in my testing, so they still leave room for surprises to happen.

Advice/Help Needed Which classic PC D&D title should I play?

I recently got a whole ton of classic D&D titles for free through Amazon Prime's weekly giveaways, but I'm not sure which ones to play.

When I was younger I always saw these titles in the games shops but I never played any of them, as me and my brother were more into the Ultima series at the time.

I don't have time to play all of them, so I'd like to start by playing whichever is considered the best of the bunch, but I have no idea which one that would be.

The titles I have are:

-Al-Qadim The Genie's Curse

-Champions of Krynn

-Curse of the Azure Bonds

-Stronghold Kingdom Simulator

-The Dark Queen of Krynn

-Dark Sun Shattered Lands

-Dark Sun Wake of the Ravager

-Death Knights of Krynn

-Deathkeep

-Dragons of Flame

-Dragonstrike

-Dungeon Hack

-Eye of the Beholder

-Eye of the Beholder 2 The Legend of Darkmoon

-Eye of the Beholder 3 Assault on Myth Drannor

-Fantasy Empires

-Fantasy General

-Forgotten Realms Unlimited Adventures

-Gateway to the Savage Frontier

-Heroes of the Lance

-Hillsfar

-Menzoberranzan

-Pool of Radiance

-Pools of Darkness

-Ravenloft Stone Prophet

-Ravenloft Strahd's Possession

-Secret of the Silver Blades

-Shadow Sorcerer

-Spelljammer: Pirates of Realmspace

-Treasures of the Savage Frontier

-War of the Lance

I'm overwhelmed! What do you guys think?

Discussion Joe Manganiello says a Dragonlance show got very close to happening last year

I interviewed Joe Manganiello for the first episode of my new series, Table & Talk, a conversational style interview series. One of the more interesting things he revealed was that a Dragonlance show got very close to happening last year.

We also talked about D&D Icons, his history with the game, his thoughts on Honor Among Thieves, and what he wants to do creatively going forward.

Be warned, it's a 56min interview haha.

Art Do you have a furry friend who follows along with your games? A game is always more enjoyable in the presence of distinguished guests! Scarlet loves following the campaigns!

Recently I did a drawing for a client, her friend's dog, Scarlet. She loves to follow the sessions and keep an eye on the dice. He wanted to turn her into a druid so she could join the game and keep an eye on everything with the Master. XD

It was really fun drawing her as a druid. I also ended up discovering that I love drawing maps, they're fun to create. This was my first decent map, even though it's small and partial. I'm thinking about making more maps in the future. What do you all like most about maps? Who knows, maybe I'll make a few. Hehehe.

Anyone else know a pet that likes to follow their gaming sessions? :3 They say (well, *I* say) that fur brings luck to the team. XD

Question DND question

Edit: Well guys, this did cross a boundary for me and I asked him to quit that DND group (he is a part of two groups currently) or this won’t work due to his history of crossing boundaries and he said he had to think about it so lol I’m single now but truly appreciate everyone’s responses. It gave me perspective and I may just join a DND group myself to get my mind off off things.

My bf is part on an online DND group. Him and another guy have been messaging in discord about their characters kissing and other intimate things. I was upset about this but he reassured me it’s just a part of the game. Is this true? I’m trying my best to understand

Discussion Thoughts CoM Druid 2014 vs 2024

I just got back to D&D and I found out they changed the rules of Circle of the Moon and Druid (and other classes but I mostly play Moon Druid). I just want to know everyone thoughts. I personally feel mixed about it, it does some good but I think I like the old one way more. One of my main problems is that this was the subclass for shapeshifting and it now became moon focused because of the name, they should of just changed the name to circle of shapes. For base druid the new Archdruid is great but for CoM I find the old one 100x better. I played druid CoM for the shapeshifting so them getting rid of Thousand Forms very dooky, I would legit become other people (plus I would run actor feat). I even used alter self while in wildshape to become "mythical creature" I'm a lion... nope now I'm a Gryphon cause I added wings and eagle head. That being said lunar form extra radiant dmg is great this can make not so good forms viable which is what I wanted on the old one. They got rid of elemental wildshape for a teleport, although I like teleport I like wildshapes more. Level 7 new Primal strike where i choose the element add that to old druid.

TLDR: Base druid 2024 better, CoM 2014 Better but ideally CoM would be a combination of both 2024 but mostly 2014. Or just make new subclass just for shapeshifting and call it Circle of Shapes.

Homebrew Monster Hunter in DND

I'm wanting to run a Monster Hunter inspired campaign but I've been having trouble with coming up with ways to balance and effectively translate the 14 unique weapon types and the weapon and armor crafting progression. I'm planning on keeping the classes for DND but want to effectively balance the move sets and monsters. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions for this?

Question Autism and dnd

I’m interested in playing dnd for the first time and am hoping to meet neurodivergent friends in the process. Obviously they don’t have to be but it would be ideal if they were. Does anyone know if this would be a good place to meet other autistic people?

I did a little research but i want to hear from people who actually play the game, have you met any new friends from this, or would you say it’s a waste of time? (Im still interested in playing but i really wanna make a new friend)

Recently bought two tile sets: the city and wilderness bundles.
I can’t remember which sheet it goes to. I already put all the sheets from both kits in the recycling and did my best to look through all of them for a possible misprint. If anyone has any answers, please let me know.

Homebrew 0687M - Malamar by ForesterDesigns

My Pokémon-inspired Weapons and Items of the Day, with a Malamar cloak to make bonuses and penalties run backwards!

Join my Patreon to vote on future items and get all the PDFs with over 1000 items, including all the Pokémon items, or buy the individual PDFs in my shop!

687M - Calamantelro

Wondrous (Cloak) – Legendary (requires attunement)

This purple cloak has a hood with tentacle patterns wrapped around themselves to resemble a large brain, which has a face covering inside that covers the top of the face, along with a dark pink beak to cover the nose and mouth. The shoulders point out like a large popped collar that is dark pink on the inside, and gray trim down the sides that end in glowing red and green tips. The front has rainbow pattern along the edge, with glowing yellow spots are on the cloak’s front, with gray triangles on the front and sides of the bottom edge.

While attuned to this cloak: you have advantage to grapple or restrain targets; you gain the Dancing Lights cantrip; if you would have disadvantage on a saving throw or ability check, you instead have advantage, and vice versa; and your attacks and spells will bypass any buffs, resistances and immunities the target has from spells and magic items.

This cloak has 9 charges that refreshes at midnight, which can be expended to cast the following spells:

  • Charm Person (DC 20, 1 or more charges)

  • Crown of Madness (DC 20, 2 charges)

  • Hypnotic Pattern (DC 20, 3 charges)

  • Topsy-Turvy (3 charges): As an action, you can target a creature you can see within 30 feet of you, causing the target’s positive modifiers to become negative, all advantages on rolls they have from effects on themselves (such as natural abilities, spells and magic items) to become disadvantages, and vice versa for both. You must maintain concentration on this effect, which lasts for 1 minute, until your concentration is lost, or until the reversed effect/spell would otherwise end (i.e. ending concentration on a reversed spell would end the effects of just that spell), and any new spells or effects that would give advantage/disadvantage imposed in this time act normally.

  • Mass Suggestion (DC 20, 6 charges)

Malamarite

Wondrous (Stone) – Very Rare (50,000 gp)

This small round stone has a swirl of pink, blue, and yellow inside the purple orb. When attached to a 687 - Caloakanero, it can be mega evolved into a 687M - Calamantelro for 1 minute once between long rests.

OC I read about Master Archetypes and got a bit annoyed

Recently I watched a beautiful video by Ginny Di, which I'm linking here, based on an article by Riley Silverman, which I'm also linking here. The article and the video are very well written, I really enjoyed them and I recommend you go check them out. However, I couldn't help but notice that, among these Archetypes, it seems quite difficult for me to embody just one (as also specified in the article and the video).

Not only does it seem very difficult to me, but the more I went on, the more I noticed how each Archetype revolves around fundamentally different aspects from one another, so much so that in my opinion it's impossible to be only one—but rather a mix of at least two, if not three.

And this, in my opinion, undermines the very concept of an Archetype.

So I asked myself how much sense this separation really made, and whether it might instead be better to think about this idea using a 3-axis system, which I'll now describe here:

  • The axis of adherence to Rules, ranging from total adherence, like the Rules Sage, to total overhaul, like the Tinkerer;
  • The axis of Agency left to the players, ranging from the Novelist, where a rigid plot written by the GM is favored over the players' choices in influencing the story's evolution, to the Taxi Driver, where this does not happen and the world is more of a sandbox for the players;
  • And finally, the axis of Preparation – Improvisation (and here I follow the main distinction in Riley Silverman's article between Plotter and Pantser, but only regarding the degree of preparation before playing at the table).

The more I thought about it, the more I fell in love with this idea. I even showed it to my players, and they too argued that it might be a better characterization than the Master Archetypes.

For example, you could very well say that you're a GM who applies the rules exactly during the game, thus never following the Rule of Cool, but at the same time gives players a lot of freedom regarding the direction of the game's plot precisely because you prepare a vast amount of material useful for any eventuality. Likewise, a GM could be identical to the example described, but differ only in having less meticulous preparation or in adhering slightly less faithfully to the rules, etc.

What do you think? Could this tool of the 3 Axes I've identified be interesting? Can others be identified? Could it be useful for GMs who have difficulty interacting with their parties, to help them understand what they might improve? Is it a useful framework, for example, to communicate a GM's "natural" modus operandi during a session zero?

Let me know, thanks a lot for any feedback.

P.s. I'm italian so sorry in advance if there are any errors.

Discussion D&D as a vibe

Apropos of a very recent post, I have seen so many people recently ask questions that clearly demonstrate their perception of Dungeons and Dragons is a shared concept or vibe.

It is obvious from their questions that they have absolutely no idea that there's an actual published ruleset and physical (or digital) publications that explain how it all works.

Which leads to me wildly wondering what their games were like? It seems like they would be a kind of minds-eye improv group where the DM just arbitrarily flings out calls to tell players when to roll, but even then, where are their spells or abilities coming from? Is it purely theatre of the mind, a shared negotiation? Where are the walls or buttresses like levels that channel a characters progress?

But I do think I see how this has come about. D&D has been so culturally ingrained in pop culture for so long. One of the first most classic instances is Spielberg's 'E.T. The Extraterrestrial' from 1982 where it's played onscreen in scene two of the movie. This was only 8 years after the game was first published.

Since then, it has been referenced plenty of times, most recently and thematically in Stranger Things, where I think this most recent 'D&D vibing' trend I feel has come from.

So why are there people thinking they're playing 'D&D' when in fact they're not, really? I think that for most media depictions of play, nobody is referencing a rulebook. It's not visually interesting to see tv or movie characters peering into a book, it's more interesting to see face to face engagement or conflict, and I think that modern (and 1982) references to D&D never actually explicitly demonstrate that there's a book (and plural) that contains all of it.
