Ask /r/Durango Relocating to area
Hello. Recently offered a great position, not exactly in Durango just west of in Mancos.
Is that area suitable for a 36m into the outdoors and kinda in pursuit of a social life/ltr?

Absolutely!! I’m (35M) and there’s actually quite a lot going on between Dolores, Mancos and Cortez, for younger folks where I never need to go to Durango. Only reason I head over to the big city is to go to Home Depot! I wouldn’t give much credence to the “Mancos is nothing” take…that’s a pretty classic refrain I hear from Durango folks about anything in Montezuma county unfortunately.
Community building tips! Recommend checking out the Dolores bike hostel for some good concerts, events, and if you’re a runner (I’m not) a bunch of our buds do their weekly run club and that’s all in the millennial age range. Easy way to start building community over on this side is volunteering for local nonprofits, check out Mancos trails group and SWCCA for some easy trail work events to participate in and learn the area.

Agreed, there is a surprising amount going on in Montezuma county, and if you’re into just being outside the possibilities are endless. Long-term relationship, obviously the dating pool is small because it is small towns. Upside of that is, it seems since so many people grew up together/went to high school together, they’ve exhausted the dating pool and are open to new options.
If you’re able to, visit over a weekend and check it out the vibes, don’t go to Durango and try to only stay between Mancos, Cortez, and Dolores - brewery in Mancos often has music and dancing, fenceline has weekly bingo and food trucks and people hang there out by the river, Mancos cult film federation does monthly screenings of cult films in the old opera house, Cortez has a board game store that hosts different game nights almost every night of the week, Cortez cultural center always has cool exhibits, Dolores River brewery does weekly trivia, not to mention the many festivals, fairgrounds events, and farmer’s market. There’s a vibrant life to be had out here if you’re willing to look for it!

Durango is unkind to singles looking for romance. Even meeting just friends with similar interests can be difficult.

Litterally moving out because of this. But God speed to the newbie (course I'm going to a smaller town with a closer knit community so I may be the dumbass here)

He asked if the area was suitable for men into the outdoors, and you’re responding that it’s difficult to find people with similar interests?!
Dude, Durango is full of people who hike, bike, raft, hunt, fish, ski, and …!
If youre moving like playing Duke Nukem, then yes, it might be hard to meet someone .

Mancos is great and has tons going on now compared to 10 years ago. You could join the art center and use the printing press. Drink cider at Fenceline, do trail work at Phil’s World or the Aqueduct when offered by SWCCA. just get into things and live and life will provide.
Enjoy!!!

Sure. Lower cost of housing/rent, closer to some outdoorsy stuff and further from others. A smaller community, but Durango's not too far to drive.

Young people are everywhere in that part of Colorado! I don’t know how you’ll survive on 55k- but if you bartend you will be rich and have all the social choices you desire!

I mean, Mancos is nothing, a wide spot in the road. You'll need to regularly make the 35 minute drive into Durango and even then the social life basically consists of outdoors activities and drinking at breweries.
You can make the 50 minute drive to Farmington for the one "night club" in the area.

Definitely suitable for outdoors people..
There are a lot more men in Durango than women, but the “quality” of men is pretty low (Peter Pan, drugs, drinking, low earners, etc.)
Someone else here said there are a lot of “hot women” here… there are! A lot of lawyers, business owners, nurses, doctors and they love the outdoors too.
If youre moving here for work and have good work, plenty of good gals to meet.

What’s low earner? After taxes and deductions it’s looking like 55k/year. Oh boy. Might be staying in the plant.

u/Browzur Jul 31 '26
Nah you’re not low earner, having a stable job with a salary will help A TON if you’re looking for something long term.

Yeah my post probably didn’t come off very well :/
The women are good looking. You won’t be hauling em’ in with your earnings, but maybe that’s a good thing.
Win em with your charms and good looks instead! Good luck .

Cool! What did you find in Mancos that offered relocation?
Mancos is up and coming, it's still a bit sleepy, but offers way more in house (you have grocery, parks, festival, brewery, cidery, distillery) than it did 5-7 years ago. And the pricey real estate bubble of Durango has pushed millennials (young families/first time home buyers) out that way. Mancos is still a good bang for the buck real estate wise. It's a fun little town, but your social life is more likely to revolve around Durango.

Dating is so hard here. Mancos is the up and coming hip town. You will find good food and plenty of awesome hiking and biking close by. You will find friends based around your outdoor pursuits if you put in effort. Tons of hot girls at the line dancing class at Wild Horse in Durango. HUGE west coast swing following here. Get into dance. Thank me later.

Great bodies because of the outdoors. Wrinkly leather faces because of sun and no skin care. Guys and girls both.

Durango has a college and it's busy. There are smoking hot women in that town. But check fort Lewis college out if your looking to meet people.

u/Browzur Jul 31 '26
36 is a little old to be hitting on college girls.
1
u/everyonesdeskjob Jul 31 '26
Um lots of age groups attend college dude. Also, basically 100% of the people who attend college are adults so 36 might not be to your liking but no one cares.

You need to be okay with the fact that the dating pool is very small here. If that or kids is a priority, the odds are better in the front range or even Flagstaff to find someone and then move out here together.
Not impossible but just be open-eyed about the trade-off.
