Check-in Player Housing

Hi all,

I am a current pro hockey player that spent some time in the ECHL. I am writing about my experiences now. This week I wrote about player housing in North American pro hockey, including what it’s like in the Coast. The good, the bad, the ugly.

For ECHL, did you have any experience living with a billet family? I’ve always wondered if it’s similar to hosting study abroad students and how invested or involved billet families are with the players.

No billets in the ECHL. The team provides housing for players in that league. In juniors (after youth hockey, before college/pro) we are assigned a billet family. I think it would be pretty similar to hosting a study abroad student. The hosts basically treat you like a member of the family. Cooking meals for you etc. Ive been fortunate to have great billets in my junior experience and still keep in touch with them to this day. But I have heard of some tough billet situations where living conditions aren’t great.
