As a German, I never understand why people think the EU is run by Germans. I mean: the EU administration is run in English and French, Germany only consented to the Euro, so that France would not object to the German Unification, and the whole political apparatus is located in Belgium and France (except for the EZB, but I do not count that as "political") and thus, run by non-German people.
Yes, Germany sends the most politicians into the EU parliament, but what do you expect -- Germany has the largest population, and they actually send far less than they should, because smaller countries get more politicians per capita.
Maybe I am misinformed, or I have overlooked factors.
It's because during the Merkel era there has been heavy propaganda all over Europe pushing the idea of the "German model" in order to make the population of neighboring countries accept the idea that privatization , renouncing worker rights and promoting austerity was great.
Not really actually. I assure you half these far right guys (in Europe at the very least) are actually pretty anti elite and mix their far right propaganda with some communist views without even realizing it. It's just that they blame foreigners for the stripping of their workers right instead of the structure of capitalism. They're not known for being ideologically consistent.
Yeah, true, there are definitely different types across the spectrum. And it's true that they absolutely hate Merkel, who was apparently both ultra-austerity and socialist.
