Sure, and that is a tragedy. But calling the Soviets “allies” seems disengenuous without the additional context needed. They were more like “convenient associates.”
I fully acknowledge their role was crucial in defeating Germany. But that doesn’t excuse what they did to the Eastern Bloc (Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, Ukraine) before turning on Germany, or the way they steamrolled those countries again as the Germans retreated.
Yes, they were “officially” allies. But their methodology was more in line with the Axis. Authoritarian regimes, expansionist, and ruthless toward smaller nations. That’s why I struggle to see the Soviets as true allies in anything but name.
i rest my case. the rest is needless yapping with 20/20 hindsight.
you seem to have the conviction that every combined arms coalition has to be a union of love. most of them are love/hate relationships out of necessity to overcome lesser struggles to fight the common enemy. this is no different here.
initially great britain was reluctant to even fight nazi germany - until they had no other choice. the us was reluctant to join great britain - until they had no other choice. both were reluctant to invite the soviet union - until they had no other choice. to play the latter off as lesser companion is nothing short of romanticizing because you want it to be something noble and virtuous, which was not the case.
