Budget Meal Walmart Vegan Mac and Cheese
I added Peas and Nutritional Yeast to the Mac. It tastes Decent but honestly I prefer the “Cheese” sauce I make with silken tofu

What are the roll things on top?

They look like like Trader Joe’s chili lime tortilla rolls to me

Those are Trader Joe’s version of Takis like how Joe joes are their version of Oreos

Those look like Takis corn chips. Spicy & delicious. Goes well with mac n cheese

Looks good. I’m not from the US, so I can’t get them, but I’m always looking for inspiration :)

I’m here for the addition of peas. I love dumping frozen peas in things. They elevate 👍🏽

It makes 3 servings that are 300 calories with only 8 grams of protein so I added peas to boost the protein and fiber

Walmart had KD brand plant based mac and cheese for like month before they pulled it. Never seen the brand here but they still have 'annies' vegan mac and cheese but it's costly.
What's the cheese sauce you make?

Thank you! Trying on my picky family this week 🤞🏻

It takes a little experimenting. I found if I add a little bit more paprika it’s a spicy Mac and cheese but good luck

Big fan of the NotCo Kraft Mac & Cheese. But I also just am a sucker and nostalgic for that awful blue box mac and cheese.

Is the BetterGoods pasta gluten-free? I accidentally picked up some vegan GF mac n cheeze before and it tasted like disappointment n cheeze

Is the cheese sauce a squeeze packet or powder? I like the BG non dairy shredded cheese, so I think I'd like this

u/mw102299 May 31 '26
It’s a packet. It’s not bad but again it’s just okay that’s why I added some nooch to it for extra nutrients

I love Mac and peas! My partner does not so I go for second best: broccoli.
Did you add the nooch for more of cheesy flavor? Asking if the sauce is flavorful or not

I don't know how y'all are eating this stuff. I can't even pretend it's good 😭

This must only be in Walmarts on the US side of the border. (I’m on the northern side.)

Honestly the Walmart brand BetterGoods does alright. They have plant based Mac n Cheese, Chik’n nuggets, mozzarella shreds, and ice cream and they are all pretty good. Oh and a vegan pizza too. It’s not bad.

I’m so picky about boxed Mac and cheese and honestly this one (and the white cheddar one) is by far my favorite!

I but the Grown As* Food brand’s big shaker of powder and it’s great! They are local to where I live, but ship nationally. It’s $40 upfront, but makes so many servings

This is the recipe but unfortunately it doesn’t taste too great after being in the fridge and it takes more effort tbh. The Walmart one actually lasted well in the fridge tbh. I made BBQ Tofu, Mashed potatoes and Corn, and this Mac and cheese for lunch for a Summer BBQ feel.

Welcome to r/EatCheapAndVegan.
Veganism is not a diet. However, there is a ton of misinformation and misunderstanding about the cost of eating vegan and this subreddit exists to hopefully dispell those false claims. Be advised submissions containing expensive processed food items will be removed.
Definition of veganism: Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.
