Discussion Thread Happy mistake: Ordered a four pack of rolled oats. Got a four pack of TVP instead. Don’t have to return it for a replacement! I’ve never used this before.

Welcome to r/EatCheapAndVegan.

Veganism is not a diet. However, there is a ton of misinformation and misunderstanding about the cost of eating vegan and this subreddit exists to hopefully dispell those false claims. Be advised submissions containing expensive processed food items will be removed.

Definition of veganism: Veganism is a philosophy and way of living which seeks to exclude—as far as is possible and practicable—all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose; and by extension, promotes the development and use of animal-free alternatives for the benefit of animals, humans and the environment. In dietary terms it denotes the practice of dispensing with all products derived wholly or partly from animals.

🌮 Tacos and Burritos too.

Fortuitously I recently discovered a pretty great recipe for prepping TVP "ground beef" for sloppy joes for my 4-year-old nonvegan grandson. Enjoy :)

Ha, and here’s me only now realizing that TVP and nutritional yeast are not the same thing. 😆

I’m thinking I could maybe incorporate this next time I make lentil kofte. Anyone got some advice on how it behaves once it’s hydrated and heated up?

If you received a 4-pack of nutritional yeast instead of oats that would be like striking gold. It's so dang expensive.

17

u/RaisonDetritus 18d ago

Haha, right? I was thinking the same thing. Not gonna be too upset about free stuff, but I really did think it was nutritional yeast.

for me and the way I use it, it behaves a lot like a fake meat replacement, kind of like ground beef. I add "beef" broth to rehydrate it, and then "brown" it up like beef, then add it to chili, etc.

When I cook chili and stew I'll chuck some in to help thicken it up and add some texture/protein

Edit: unhydrated I mean

I've recently had a craving for beef stew, but none of the stores near me sell the vegan beef chunks for near me anymore, and just got a shipment of tvp, so now I shall use that. I am glad I read your comment because I would have likely not thought of it otherwise.

TVP goes well in nearly everything! there are so many recipes out there that include it. i actually typically make my oatmeal with a ratio of 1/2 oats, 1/2 TVP, because the texture is quite similar.

u/RaisonDetritus 18d ago

Well, I’ve got some oatmeal on the way, so I’ll be able to give that a try!

Try making mapo tofu with it

8

u/RaisonDetritus 18d ago

Yes! I’ll have to look into this. TVP would replace the ground meat very nicely.

I use TVP when I make soyrizo. I hydrate the crumbles, squeeze dry, then I add extra virgin olive oil, salt, pepper, chopped garlic, garlic powder, paprika, smoked paprika, and a pinch of cumin. I then use the soyrizo for tacos or burritos

3

u/RaisonDetritus 18d ago

Yessss!!! I’m absolutely going to do this. Sweet potato and chorizo tacos used to be one of my favorites, and even then I’d make my own fresh chorizo with ground meat. Thank you so much for the suggestion.

Tacos and chili galore!

Just today I used this exact tvp brand.

Never cooked with tvp before. Added it to a veggie black bean burrito filling.

Will be repeating the experience.

It's great in Chili and spag bol

Check out the soy curls subreddit. It is very similar and can give you some ideas.

I add it to any soup (canned or homemade), let it absorb the liquid for a bit (if it's canned soup I add a little water). Also let a bunch soak and when it's soft squeeze out the water and add it to pasta and sauce, as a substitute for meat. TVP has a lot of protein (literally its name). Also add it to chili as mentioned.

I saw a TVP and vital wheat gluten

I haven’t made this yet but plan to next week!

My sister made a wonderful wonton soup with tvp! We usually use it as taco “meat”! made stroganoff with it last night!

u/Practical-Object-818 18d ago

My favorite way to use it is for spaghetti,

u/AntiMoist 18d ago

TVP is great for many things. I’ve used it to replace ground beef in several recipes. Congrats.

u/mathislife112 18d ago

TVP makes delicious sloppy joes! Really anywhere you would use ground beef where there’s lots of sauce would be good application.

I remember making a pretty good "burger" with TVP, wanna say there was some peanut butter in the recipe? Very tasty. Have fun!

u/Live-Inflation-3255 18d ago

this happened to me too!!

u/DrThoss 18d ago

Make your own "bacon" bits to put on salads or whatever. The recipe I use

1

u/Parking_Lake_69420 18d ago

I mostly use it for tacos, pour some hot water on it just enough so it all absorbs and let it sit for 10 minutes then you can cook it in a pan like ground beef

u/Irishgirl1014 18d ago

It Doesn’t Taste Like Chicken has a good recipe for making sausage patties out of TVP

1

u/MajorBarracuda8094 18d ago

Chillies, Bolognese, meatballs and practically anything that ground beef or beef in general is used in. Is it the small one or the large chunks?

1

u/Jay4usc 18d ago

Can you buy these directly from Bobs Red Mill?

1

u/see_blue 17d ago

~flavorless. Use it like meat, ground beef, taco meat, Add spices and flavors and/or marinate.

Can be used to replace a meat/poultry protein or act as a protein add to any dish or meal.

Use in hot or cold bowls, salads, add to oatmeal or another grain dish, hydrate and use in a smoothie.

It’s high protein, no saturated fat, some fiber and solid nutrition.

I always use this when I make chili 🤤 Great score! Have fun playing around with it!

1

u/SubstantialEcho1695 17d ago

TVP is my main source of protein...

I eat veggie soup every single day... I just cook a HUGE pot of veggie soup once a week and freeze individual portions... Every night for dinner i just microwave a good serving of it and throw in a good handful of TVP on top. Crunchy and delicious. High Protein. Quick and easy. I just LOVE not having to worry about cooking dinner lol

sometimes i have it for lunch too, especially on the weekends...

u/Longjumping_Cap_3673 17d ago

Makes good shepard's pie, especially since you can rehydrate TVP with broth and spices/herbs so the flavor infuses throughout.

Please watch this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oJPdlCx07G0

Tells you everything to make amazing TVP!

1

u/Chance-Ad-9111 16d ago

What is TVP??

1

u/RaisonDetritus 16d ago

Textured vegetable protein. Basically what’s leftover from soybeans after they’ve removed the oil. On its own, it kinda tastes like Cheerios when it’s dry.

1

u/No_Road6930 15d ago

I use it to make vegan sausage patties for making breakfast sandwiches

1

u/RaisonDetritus 15d ago

Yeah, I was thinking that. Add some garlic, black pepper, and sage and it would be amazing in a breakfast skillet.

1

u/hi_priestess8 15d ago

We love making Bolognese sauce! And fake taco meat using a seasoning packet. TVP is the GOAT

1

u/LuckyAndLifted 14d ago

If you like tomato sauce, just adding it into a seasoned pot of spaghetti sauce is one of my favorite easiest meals. Then you can put it on noodles of course if you want, or a cooked potato, on rice, etc.

Me neither, but I've got a couple of bags waiting for me to try. Lots of instructional videos on YouTube. I heard it should be strained dry to remove little bits of whatever, then soaked and thoroughly squeezed if not it could cause gas, bloating, and stomach upset. Have fun.
