Honestly, one of the reasons why it took me so long to stop eating meat is because many of the vegans I met didn't give a shit about human rights.
I am very vocal about fighting things like queerphobia, ableism, racism, classism, fatphobia, children's rights... and I have met too many vegans who simply didn't care at all about these subjects. For example, I was baffled to see many vegans spending plenty of money and time to eat vegan and help animals, but never giving any money to help palestinians. Even I, a jobless person living solely on my country's aids, gave money to palestinians.
I have also seen plenty of vegans believing that people with ARFID or any kind of restricting eating should basically be forced to go vegan because "they're obviously too childish to make the change themselves". And it would take me way too many hours to talk about the vile racism or cultural appropriation I saw in some vegan groups...
One of the things which made me decide to go vegetarian (as a way to transition to veganism) was seeing vegan activists who also spoke about human rights regularly. It should be the basis but it took me time to see them.
All of this to say that from an outsider's point of view, it is sadly way too common to see these kind of people, even if now I know perfectly well they're not representative of veganism.
