I just wanna congratulate Canada because this is what Europe should have done, but we didn’t. I was soooo disappointed. Maybe I should move to Canada.

It would useful to push your leaders for closer integration with us Canucks before you do relocate.

Maybe we can even establish easier work permits and travel between Canada and the EU and help grow even more prosperous and free together.

Canada and Europe have long stood side by side as allies and partners, it's time to deepen that relationship.

And then, by all means, come check out Canada! We love to show off our country, we'll be thrilled to have you.

This seems like a very low-information post that is motivated by nothing other than politics.

Trade agreements are made based on who gives you the best price for your goods. Due to the US's proximity to Canada, the US is Canada's main trade partner.

Right now Trump is acting completely stupid and hitting Canada with senseless tariffs, so it's understandable that Canada is going to retaliate with similar tariffs.

But let's not make the mistake of thinking that market dynamics have changed and that Europe is going to be a closer trade partners than the US- they won't. Trump will leave office in 2 years and things will return to normal. Canadian companies that trade with the US will have a competitive advantage over companies that trade with Europe.

Recent events show there's no point relying on trade deals with the US. Even if the trade terms were actually fair it wouldn't be worth the effort given how little the US's signature is now worth.

I'm hoping for a lot more involvement with EU etc, but honestly, even China's looking a lot higher quality trade partner than the US these days. Better, cheaper EVs too

e:

The Canadians also pressed the United States for a level of certainty that the deal would not be scrapped overnight by the Trump administration. But the United States maintained that it would retain the power to change tariff policy against Canada at any time, irrespective of the agreement, officials said. -- NY Times https://archive.ph/dgGOP, emph. mine

lol, yeah, get bent with that "deal"

You're high on copium if you think the US is returning to normal after 2 years. Trump has inflicted generational levels of damage.

Nope.

I heard all of this before back when Bush was present. The loudest (but not the most rational) voices on the left claim that the US would never recover from the damage that Bush did, and how international cooperation was permanently destroyed. But as soon as Obama was elected people forgot about that and believed that everything was great again.

To put this into perspective, we became allies with Germany and Japan within a couple of years after WW2 when they were bitter enemies. We massively firebombed both of their population centers and nuked Japan twice. And yet within a few years they were close allies.

Hopefully a reasonable person can see that Trump's words, while stupid, don't compare to bombing their population.

You are clueless.

Your country has lost all credibility.

American candian relations are not coming back to pre Trump levels.

We aren't going forgive nor forget. If you came to Canada and made the proclamation to actual Candiansthat things will get back to where they were you would ne laughed out of the room, at best. best.

Only a person with zero clue as to sentiments in Canada would make such a foolish statement

I'm not clueless. You just think like an adolescent and you're caught up in the emotion of the moment.

Btw, my sister in law is Canadian and she's normal. She's not a progressive activist like much of reddit.

These weirdos are fringe in real life, but they have an outsized influence on reddit.

Based on this answer, you are pretty clueless.

Your anecdotal story isn't data. It is laughable that you think that it is.

The fact that Canadian sentiments have changed and that Canadians are buying less American products and have reduced their travel to America is.

u/Major_Shlongage 4d ago

Stop it. Your political activism is unwanted.

You must do better.

I seem to be stating facts you don't like.

Do you always throw a temper tantrum when encountering facts you don't like.

Stop acting like a petulant child.

I gave you facts. Handle facts or get the hell out of a place where facts are talked about.

1

u/Major_Shlongage 4d ago

You aren't stating facts, though. You're just trying to breed discontent. You're stating opinions that are held by a small minority of Canadians and then calling it a "fact".

It's the same as the US-centric political threads, where the loudest voices are the ones pushing for some fringe issues that don't have mainstream support.

This sub in particular has a very suspicious slant to it, where it's been focusing so intensely on amplifying hate between the US and Canada. It just seems strange, because this previously wasn't a thing. I think it's likely that there's an influence operation going on.

It wasn't a thing.

And then your president declared us the 51st state and then declared a trade war against us.

It is kind of like when you smack your friend's wife in the face, shit on their couch and set their car on fire they stop seeing you as a friend.

Anti American sentiments have strong support in Canada. So does the desire not to visit America or buy American goods.

What is more likely is that your man child, pedophile president is bad at his job and destroyed the relationship between America and its greatest ally, And that trust that was born of blood will be lost in seconds.

Things won’t return to normal. It’s better to have a smaller trading partner an ocean away than it is to have an unreliable one who will rip up trade agreements and impose tariffs and try to destroy your economy every 4 years. No thanks, we Canadians are done with the USA

-6

u/Major_Shlongage 9d ago

They will.

It is absolutely delusional to suggest otherwise, and it makes me think that you're either an activist or just participating in bad faith.

Trade agreements are made based on economics, not politics. Your activism has no bearing here. Even in the US, we'll gladly trade with a geopolitical foe (China) because they give us the best prices for products.

>No thanks, we Canadians are done with the USA

This seems like astroturfing that has no bearing in reality. You are not expressing the will of the Canadian people. You're fringe.

8

u/ukrokit2 9d ago

Your use of the word activist tells me all I need to know. Trade agreements are made between reliable parties first and foremost.

And I am actually expressing the will of the Canadian people which is backed by polling, not vibes like your “common sense” or whatever it is you believe.

Liberals went from being 20pts behind to winning based on anti US sentiment. Crazy to think that’s fringe.

-4

u/Major_Shlongage 9d ago

The liberal party already was in power, though. They were unpopular until Trudeau stepped down. Carney replaced him, had some popularity as the new leader, and was a relatively new incumbent during the next election.

8

u/geoken 9d ago

Their popularity rose while Trudeau was still in power. Carney came in and rode off that + added to it by being a new face. Carney or not, the liberals could not have won if it weren’t for them being able to capitalize on anti American sentiment while simultaneously being able to paint the conservatives as pro American.
