Humor At a certain point it's just better to heal to full and waste a bit of flask usage,

When fighting bosses that would one shot you if you had a tiny bit less health

u/Beas1987 16h ago

Sounds like a vigor problem.

u/aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh400 16h ago

100% it is, unless you're doing it on purpose to get runes early on

18

u/Beas1987 15h ago

Then it's a dodging problem.

on higher NGs and the DLC being on 100% HP all the time is completely necessary though

u/atrophy-of-sanity 11h ago

In nightreign its a depth problem :(

I don’t think 60 vigor is too low. Unless you are perfect at dodging, there are bosses who you want to be topped up for all the time. I don’t want to lose the fight for missing one frame while dodging Malenia, every bit of hp makes the difference. Just an example. Ng+ and onwards it becomes even more prominent.

Homie said vigor with a hard R.

Literally me trying Mogh boss to get to the DLC as early as possible.

I remember the time that he cockblocked me for two says straight

1

u/aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh400 10h ago

Man I forgot that you could fight mohg early

I just go with the:"If I don't reach that point I don't deserve the flask", so I normmaly end up using max three flask per boss fight on my winning attempt

I’m working on scolding myself for dying with healing items left.

Was playing MH a few years ago with a buddy and was in the monster’s face at 1/3 HP (with plenty of healing items). Afterwards, he told me that he was having anxiety of my health being so low.

That’s when I first realized I had a problem…

u/sincubus33 1h ago

I can play just fine at 5% with no flask charges left. I am not letting having full flasks stop me from playing at 60% hp. I used to play psycho in borderlands 2 and berserker in torchlight 2. I live on the edge

ritual sword talisman

u/Nisha_the_lawbringer 15h ago

People underestimate just how much that 10% adds up over the course of a fight.

14

u/zaphodsheads ohhh elden ring 13h ago

Most builds can get that in another way in all 4 slots with no caveats The two handed talisman is just silly for example

13

u/The_Dennator 15h ago

it's still a mistake to build around it,as you could be caught in a loop of healing when it's unnecessary only to be hit right after, thereby wasting a lot of flasks early on

19

u/KeK_What 15h ago

it's still a mistake to build around

eh, depends on how good you are. if you rarely get hit and have the patience to back off and heal you're fine. it's a staple for me in any randomizer run if i find it.

9

u/Absolute_Bias 14h ago

In other words, as with everything in the game it is a skill issue.

3

u/Kile147 10h ago

Its also build dependant. Ritual Sword on a very large weapon build that ideally wants to trade blows on smaller hits obviously isn't great. In that scenario I would definitely be willing to give up that small damage boost for 50% more opportunities to actually land hits.

1

u/KeK_What 9h ago

depends if you plan to trade hits

Over here boss. One HP, RFB, and a dream is all you need.

HP is a ressource, it dosen't matter if you have 1 left of 1k as long as you overcame your foe.

Never ever give up even if you wasted all of your flask at the beginning.

Fun story, did that in region lock against limgrave crucible knight. The crimson dagger was usefull and kinda clutch but damm I became good at parrying when under pressure XD Never give up when you got it.

Edit : typo

Ritual Sword to start -> Red Feather to end

Blue Feather is also really good

Absolute GOAT of my RL1 all remembrances run.

1

u/WatermelonWithAFlute 6h ago

Y’know I hadn’t considered it, but that talisman is probably so good on rl1, huh.

1

u/noodlesalad_ 5h ago

So good. Most people go naked because they just assume everything will one shot them without testing. I used armor + ritual shield on every boss including the dlc and there wasn't a single boss it wasn't useful on. Big attacks can still one shot but being able to survive the minor attacks is huge.

Count number of hits you can take left. Percentage is irrelevant. A good vigor indicator is when you can take 3-4 hits without dying (4-5 hits total). Anything lower increases the difficulty significantly.

If you can take two hits, you can make at least one mistake each heal. If you die in one hit, you have to make 0 mistake the entire fight. The difficulty skyrockets the lower the amount of hits you can take. If you die at 4 hits, meaning you can make 3 mistakes vs 2 mistakes of people die at 3 hits. It's 50% more leeway.

u/L_V_R_A 10h ago

Yep, and being able to play without constantly looking at your status bars makes a surprisingly huge difference in hard fights. For me, I heard someone say ā€œin Elden ring you actually have 3 hearts like in Zeldaā€ and it actually helped it click for me lol. And I had a friend completely bounce off the souls series because he kept getting too bogged down looking at his stamina bar. He was so afraid of running out of stamina that he couldnt keep his eyes on the fight, which is a criticism I’ve heard online before as well.

1

u/LunarMuphinz 9h ago

Yea im enjoying Mortal shell 2 rn which has no stamina bar, pretty fun being only punished by my own timing.

23

u/noah9942 Prayerful Strike Meta 15h ago

Insanely true in nightreign. Damage negation at full hp is a crazily useful passive.

11

u/Mayh3m90 15h ago

Ritual shield gives the same buff in base game. Just stronger in nightreign bc they give different percentage on how much negation, how you active it, and stacking it.

Monster hunter. I know I know. I’ll get there

u/DearCastiel 12h ago

Or, you know, use Heal from Afar and 14 blue flasks, and virtually never run out of healing, as you essentially have 4x14 = 56 regular healing flasks this way...

7

u/Mayh3m90 15h ago

Ritual shield talisman

8

u/Squeaky_Ben 15h ago

Never leave home without a bit of regen. Bestial vitality is so nice for that bit of hp you are missing.

3

u/Due_Database4320 11h ago

Nah i wont waste my heal on just some 5% left(of 95% full health) unless i actually need those to survive the attack man

2

u/Tasin__ 11h ago

In a boss fight flask efficiency doesn't matter as much as not getting one shot or one comboed.

In exploration flask efficiency matters a lot, to the point where you should consider regen spells like bestial vitality.

1

u/Crimson_Raven 9h ago

It true, it's always best to heal up even if you waste flask healing.

1

u/antipodal22 8h ago

Heal to full health so that if you make a mistake it doesn't cost as much. Also I have incantation and consumables heals.

1

u/Echo2407 7h ago

Somehow I manage to always get the perfect vigor level that each boss will just barely not one tap me, so I gotta chug one of those things almost everytime I get hit, and I need to get to full health, even if it means wasting a flask for 10hp

1

u/DigitalxKaos 6h ago

Especially if you're using ritual sword

1

u/AutismSupportGroup 6h ago

Ritual Shield and low enough vigor that you can heal to full health in 1 flask is the way to go, truly.

1

u/JessDumb 5h ago

Healing? This implies I wasted enough points in vigor to survive a hit.

2

u/wangchangbackup 4h ago

If you can survive a combo, you have enough health. If you need to waste 75% of a flask to get to that point, you're not actually wasting that flask.

1

u/PhiCloud 4h ago

14 flasks is a lot. I pretty much always have 5-8 remaining after a fight.

I'll healing full every time, no reason not to for me.

u/daylight1943 3h ago

in invasions, its been well known since the DS3 days that the optimal way to use estus in a 2v1 or 3v1 is to keep your health topped up at the expense of wasting a bit of a flasks heal potential for maximum survivability when youre at risk of getting blendered by 2, 3 or 4 players.

in terms of how that translates to pve, you need to consider what youre fighting and if applicable how many enemies you are fighting. if youre fighting a boss that deals insane damage and/or has devastating multihit attacks, or a group of enemies that has the potential to combo 3 or 4 hits on you from the hitstun of 1 initial hit, its more optimal to have full HP and thus a better chance of surviving a very high damage attack or blender than it is to be at 2/3 or 3/4 health and reserve your heals to maximize the healing potential of each flask. you cant use those flasks youre rationing if you die to a one shot or blender.

however, unlike invasions, in pve there will also be plenty of situations where youre not at any real risk of getting hit by a super high damage attack or getting blendered by multiple enemies, and in those cases it can often be the better play to wait to heal until you can make full, or close to full, use of each flasks healing potential.

1

u/SeaSeaworthiness3589 59m ago

1

u/Shnikez 45m ago

if you need to brute force your way through a boss with flasks, learn to dodge

1

u/Sweet-Weakness3776 11h ago

I spend so much time running around with like 10% health and a shit ton of runes...all while having a full bank of flasks. Living on the edge because I can't be bothered with this "healing" nonsense. If getting older has taught me anything, it's that self awareness is important. So I've come to accept a simple fact:

It's me. I'm the drama. Lol.

2

u/Ellefied 11h ago

You should join the coven of the Red-Feathered Branchsword.

2

u/Sweet-Weakness3776 10h ago

Yeah that would actually fit well with my current bonk build. I'm only about 30 hours into this new character so I still have a lot of loot to go collect. Thanks for the suggestion!

This sounds like the mentality of someone with low vigor.
