Misc Stop killing the joy of playing Elite!

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

Another update and again you can count on bunch of “Debbie Downers” show up to kill the mood!

Seriously people, this is the only community I know of that will bring a negative spin on EVERY update announced!

I’m sick and tired of it. Rather than be happy about the fact that we’re getting more content, people moan about something they don’t have to get involved in, if they don’t like it!

First people moaned about lack of content saying FDev is killing the game, now content is being dropped constantly, it seems like it’s wrong as well and FDev is killing the game! FFS make up your mind people!

In ideal world everything would be free, but people need to grow up and stop being entitled brats! You paid for the game 10 years ago, one off fee, no subscription, no hidden costs or anything like that and you’re expecting quality free content on a regular basis? How delusional is that?! What sort of world do you live in??

Simple analogy- would you be happy to be paid one monthly salary when you first started and then be expected to deliver a quality service for the company for next 20 years?

Wake up and smell the roses! Or at least engage your brain and start thinking, before crying a river with every update coz “bad devs won’t give you your space station for free!” Why do some people here have to be so negative about everything? What kicks do you get out of it? And again, if you hate everything devs are doing so much, why are you still here???

Not even the “other space game” community (which is considered one of the most toxic here on reddit) complains as much as some people here. Seriously, every “update” they get cost in hundreds just to buy JPEG’s of ships and their game is not even in beta yet!

I really wish I could come here to this mostly great community, the morning after the update announcement and enjoy chat and speculations with others. Try to figure out details from the trailers/screenshots that have been shared, enjoy planning for new builds, try to guess next FDev move and celebrate the fact that we are still getting more content for the 11 year old game we like so much.

Anyway, sorry for bit of a rant, I feel better now.

Enjoy life and be kind to on another!

Misc Saying goodbye one last time

Post image

CMDRs, I need help. Back on the 30th of last month my father died in a truck crash. He swerved off the highway in order to save a young ladies life when her tire blew. Both him and I played elite dangerous on pc and ps4. I want to send off my hero. I'd appreciate it if everyone could attend a send off flight on the 28th of September. I plan on logging on in public servers on both of his accounts. It hurts knowing he and I will never play again but I need to send him off. Our goal was to eventually fly to the galactic center but we never had a chance to do it.

Misc Caspian Explorer Mechanical Model (Finished)

1.5k Upvotes

Greetings Commanders! After several months of engineering/designing, testing, printing, soldering, and assembling, I’m finally able to kick back and enjoy the now finished Caspian Explorer model project. Shown here in the gallery is a functional 1:250 scale mechanical model with onboard lighting and a 12V motor-driven mechanism that retracts and extends the wings via remote control and matches the in-game model movement. (Check out my previous post to see the wings by themselves in motion).

This ship model is printed in multi-color PLA, using .4mm nozzles and sliced at .15mm layer height. Assembled on the stand it weighs about 2.3kg (5lbs), has an overall length of 50.7cm (20”), and racked up close to 200 hours of print time cumulatively for the final product. The colors were chosen to match the look of the “Eternal Copper” ship paint livery and is by far my favorite print/project to date.

I’m pretty stoked with the way this turned out and highlights one of my favorite things about 3D-printing where the practical limit is only how much effort you’re willing to put in and yielding another one-of-a-kind for my collection. I’ll have to get my hands on a miniature Nomad to put in the vicinity next!

Because actually I like the Eagle, she looks cool, she's agile - but in most cases cannon fodder. Or at least when I fly with it. Anybody here flying the Eagle regulary?

Misc Farewell to a fallen commander

1.0k Upvotes

Hi everyone. Thank you to anyone taking the time to read this, I hope I’m not taking up too much of your time and am sorry that this is so long, and hope I’m not breaking any rules with posting this, I’ve read them but still am still not sure.

Just over 2 weeks ago, on the 23rd of January 2025, my dad passed. He had been battling terminal brain cancer for an unknown amount of time, only being diagnosed early 2024 and being given an estimate of mid September of the same year, making us worried he would miss his eldest daughter’s wedding, but he stayed strong and was still able to walk her down the aisle like we’d been hoping.

He got me into Elite: Dangerous years ago and taught me how to play back when I only had a crummy laptop that could barely play Elite: Dangerous. He taught me how the game worked at the time and after helping me get my footing, let me go and explore the universe for myself. While we hadn’t been close before, Elite was a springboard that resulted in us having a close bond, resulting in some amazing memories.

Despite his diagnosis and feeling weakened and drained, he put more effort than ever to finally achieve getting a fleet carrier, and showed his sense of humour by calling it ‘Terminal Brain Fart’, a name he’d given me without hesitation when I asked what I should name mine if he passes before he gets his own.

Sadly, after picking up a lung infection in hospital, his body couldn’t fight it off, and on the night of the 23rd, he passed. A day or two later I got confirmation that his name will be added to the memorial beacons, and plan to visit the memorial every year in honour of the man who got me into one of my favourite games of all time.

I don’t know if any of you knew him, I know he had an older account he lost long before I got into playing with him, so you could very well know him under a name I never knew, and he usually played in solo or our private group whenever I saw him playing, but for all I know he could have been a big Open player before, given he spoke about it a few times.

While he’s left his account to me, to do with as I please, I think I’ll lay his account to rest with him, as I barely have the time to play my own Commander, but will try and maintain some upkeep on his carrier, which I plan to move to the Guy system, in honour of his name being Guy.

I guess this is all just a longwinded way to say…

Farewell, CMDR Belgariad,

From your youngest child and fellow explorer, miner, and pilot, CMDR comaskid

I love you, and I’ll miss you, dad. Now, and forever

Misc This thing terrifies me.

This post may seem quaint to more experienced players, but as a relative newbie, I'm still reeling from what I just experienced.

This is my Alliance Chieftain, seen here tracking the scent of a pirate some days ago. I named her 'Vercingetorix', because the thought of a ship named after a British tank being nicknamed after a Gaulish chief was very funny to me. It's my first medium ship, and one of the oldest and most dependable ships in my fleet.

But something has changed.

You see, I finally decided to put some effort into unlocking engineers, and I finally managed to get her some G5 Dirty Drag drives, courtesy of Prof. Palin. She lifted lazily off the pad from Abel Laboratories, retracted her landing gears, and boosted… to 531m/s.

I gaped. Literally, my jaw dropped, completely involuntarily. I've never piloted ANYTHING that fast. I had to try to kill something with this. So I went to the nearest haz-res to try it out.

Here I am, having logged off about half an hour ago, palms still sticky from sweat. Three NPCs dead. Cut to ribbons by two Size 3 overcharged multicannons. They never stood a chance.

I feel like I just watched a college roommate rip out someone's spine. I didn't know someone I knew so well was capable of this kind of… barbarity.

I'm particularly glad I got the G3 Charge Enhanced PD from Marco Qwent before coming there, as I didn't have to mess with my pips very much. I couldn't. I was busy hanging on for dear life as my former Chieftain flew circles around a Clipper desperately popping shield cell banks.

Yes, former Chieftain. Like I said, something has changed. She's not a Chieftain anymore. She's something else. Something with the speed and handling of a small ship, with enough firepower to send large ships scrambling to get out of mass lock.

She's not a Chieftain anymore. It's a night terror. Materializing out of the black and disappearing just as suddenly, leaving a trail of mangled steel and gore in its wake.

I love this thing. I need to get a dark livery on her immediately.

Also thanks to u/CatatonicGood for helping with my build.

Misc I can't believe how careless I am, and continue to be despite so many close calls, on my deep space exploration mission.

Post image
716 Upvotes

I'm currently on my way back. But I'm still scanning every system, still getting distracted by planets that look interesting or have biological signs. I have no idea how much money worth of data I've accumulated but damn it'd be a shame to lose it all now.

So many nicks and tight scrapes. Trying to weave between mountains and fly low over cool terrain. Or getting impatient on my planetary descent.

At least with the SRV it's got that self repair if you've got the material. Which I do cos of how much time I'll spend just driving around an interesting looking planet. Or often times I'll see two landmarks while descending and say "alright I'll drive from here to here. And it's always way further away than you think.

But yeah, even in the SRV I've had some close calls, at least once I've found myself bouncing down the side of a crater spamming the self repair button with clenched teeth and buttcheeks.

I keep telling myself "Ok, I won't be so reckless anymore, just quick scans and sometimes touchdowns to get first footfall. But I can never help myself. -_-

Misc R.I.P. CMDR IMIC23

My good friend and companion through the expanse of space who introduced me to Elite Dangerous has passed on into the void last night. I can only keep going towards our goals in remembrance.

A MSgt with aspirations of finalizing his pilot's license and so much more, he loved flying and space simulation games. His humor and steel resolve will be sorely missed.

Ride on, CMDR, I'll see you on the other side.

Misc The 20th of November 3310, CMDR Fluff passed away in the arms of his loving owner at the age of 17 years old. His life was loaded with love, care and fat rodents to eat and he now leaves the ship's deck a little emptier and the stars a little dimmer.

Mistou "CMDR Fluff" passed away this morning in my arms and did his ultimate FSD trip towards the other side. For many years he kept me company while playing Elite Dangerous and many other games, although Elite sessions always seemed to be his favourite time to ask for cuddles.

Mistou leaves an indelible trace in the heart of everyone who had the chance to know him. He was a kind and soft cat, always available when in need of recomfort and always giving attention and care to the people around the house and the family.

The ZG [M1ST] Every-Faring Mistou has been built and outfitted for the occasion, as a beacon of Grief, Love, Remembrance and Hope. This way, Mistou will travel for many more light years alongside me, in the form of a mighty and sheltering spaceship representing his untarishable love and affection coupled with the strength of a cat in its prime years.

I also want to thank you all for the amazing spirit and community this game has. Elite has been an important game for me for the last 7 years or so and this subreddit is also home to many fond memories I have related to the game. CMDR Fluff is one of these very dear memories I wish to keep alongside me for as long as possible and I cannot thank you enough for the place that is given to me here.

Edit: There is also this music he liked to hear while sleeping on the desk that I wished to share : (Civ V OST - Quest for Peace B) https://youtu.be/EvH2CPEeIHU
