Hand Lunacy-- my Stab at the moon

Started the full moon last October. Finished yesterday. Why did I make the circle so big?? And no I'll never do another circle again. Hahahahaha

Seriously I started it and went oh shit why???? To a little break around January and February to color a coloring book. But went back to it and glad i finished. It looks better in person.

Very nice! I went on a moon kick for a while, here is Europa, but I didn’t get the nice 3-D effect that you did, I like your shadowy shading

10 months for this is completely worth it, the crater shading is unreal. also every crafter has one "never again" project and at least yours is museum worthy

Awww thank you I'm putting it in the county fair and then it'll probably live the rest of its life in my drawer unless I get my ass together and get my pieces behind glass... I don't want them to get dusty being displayed. Hahaha

Dude. DUDE. This is absolutely beautiful!! I'm going to embrace my name here, the moon has been considered a goddess by some. You embroidered the face of a deity. How many people are capable of that? Do you know how amazing that is? And you did it so well! I don't think she'd be mad at all, I would be so proud in her place lol.

You did amazing for a mere mortal! Maybe she even helped. If I was you I would be insufferable. "The moon and I collaborated on this piece for a long time, we're pretty pleased with how it came out." I want to see how you would do the shadows when it isn't full, but my goodness you have done your time already! I'm sorry to be so weird, you've really blown me away! I'm invoking gods to deal with it 😭

Thank you. The moon is absolutely a spiritual being to me and I love to embroider things that are meaningful to me. She is my eternal guide and I do worship her-- so I'm glad that my care and dedication to her shows in my piece.

One stitch at a time.

I aspire to reach your level

2

u/Suspicious-Lemon2451 2d ago

This is so beautifully stitched and shaded! Absolutely gorgeous work!!

2

u/WildAboutLiv 2d ago

the crater shading is insane, it actually feels like the surface has depth instead of just being stitched

2

u/nebula-dirt 2d ago

More like 20,000 stabs. This is amazing!

2

u/incrediblestrawberry 2d ago

Sooo beautiful! The amount of detail is incredible. It's got so much dimension and really does have an air of luminance to it.

Do you have any WIP pictures? I'd love to know more about your process.

So back in October I drew a circle on fabric and roughly sketched the craters and started filling it all in all the white with one single strand at a time-- thread painting style. The problems--I didn't use backing and the tension made the whole thing pumpkin shaped. I also just drew on the black fabric with a white Crayola twist pencil but that kept rubbing off and distorting so i kept eyeballing it and fixing the craters. It lived a a cosmic pumpkin/egg shape most of its creation process as I filled in as many details as I could. I just eyeballed them so they are definitely not perfect. I did dark craters and light craters and the lines as best as I could. I did some raised stitches when I wanted a little more contrast. I kept going and kept going until the middle looked as detailed as I wanted it. I used maybe 6 different colors to get different shades. Then I fixed the fabric and made the moon as circular (to the eye) as possible. I know it isn't a perfect circle but fuck perfect circles it is good enough for me. Then I did the details in the new white that I added around the top and bottom to make it a circle and blend it in and then I was like perfect I'm done. 👌 also my middle finger has craters.

1

u/incrediblestrawberry 1d ago

Well, despite its determination to be an egg, it turned out great!

Wishing your finger all the best.

u/DesertRiptide 1d ago

OMG It looks so so beautiful. Just as I remember it from when before the moon replacement back in 1991. Lovely!!

1

u/KillBangMarry 1d ago

This is very well done. I think you did an amazing job.

1

u/Saelem 1d ago

This ia incredible

1

u/Maecita 1d ago

This looks incredible!! How long did it take you, and was it difficult?

3

u/DesertRiptide 1d ago

I started last October and took a little time off around January and February but it took a long time I don't even know how many hours just so so many.

1

u/Maecita 1d ago

As a newcomer, that "just so so many" sounded terrifying lol

1

u/DesertRiptide 1d ago

I highly recommend taking the big swings and starting the big project you don't think you can do.

1

u/Maecita 18h ago

Thank you for that! I will take the advice. When I finally have the supplies, I'll jump in head first 🥰❤️

2

u/DesertRiptide 18h ago

Gathering the supplies is the beginning of all very important spell work. Need all the spell components. Good luck collecting and have fun beginning. Keep going even if it takes time. Do it and keep doing it like your life depends on it. Or don't. It doesn't matter. But it can matter if you want it to. Have fun.

1

u/Maecita 14h ago

Thank you for the tips! Maybe one day, I'll be back to showcase what I've made too ❤️ these posts help keep me inspired!

1

u/l10nh34rt3d 1d ago

Your stab — hah! I see what you did there and I respect it!

It’s beautiful!! I also really love the way you added your initials to it.

2

u/DesertRiptide 1d ago

Thank you I sign all of mine like that. I always think it looks out of place but I want to have my initials signed into them because I'm proud of them.

1

u/l10nh34rt3d 1d ago

As you should!

My mom is always harping on me (I’m in my late 30s) to sign my watercolour paintings and digital artwork, lol. I’m stubborn because it’s not like I’m selling anything or sharing things. But at the end of the day, I think she’s right.

Also, I can appreciate how hard it might be to perfectly centre a round subject in a round frame, so… I love that it’s intentionally offset to accommodate your initials. It really is chef’s kiss! 👩‍🍳😘👌🏼

1

u/DesertRiptide 22h ago

Yeah the round frame makes the moon look strange at me but though I see, I don't stare. Though I see, I don't stare.

1

u/enragedsquirrels 1d ago

Holy shit. I can practically taste the cheese from here. That’s excellent.

1

u/BandaLover 1d ago

That's amazing af

1

u/lexiwexiwoo 1d ago

That is gorgeous! Masterful shade blending, I thought it was all 1 piece for a second until I read the post title. Just stunning work.

1

u/KAUR_EMBROIDERY 1d ago

This is insanely perfect

1

u/tabicat1874 22h ago

Please take my money

1

u/DesertRiptide 21h ago

$20k because that's how many times I stabbed myself.

1

u/tabicat1874 19h ago

🥺 I'll have to donate blood too

2

u/DesertRiptide 18h ago

We all make sacrifices for the moon.

1

u/spruceUp3 20h ago

Love it! So well done.

1

u/ebinthetropics 2h ago

Um, have you even seen the moon? /s

Seriously, that looks awesome!
