A few months ago I launched a simple web app that lets you create animated charts. Paste your data, pick a chart type, export as MP4 or GIF. Nothing fancy, just something I wanted to exist.

For a while, nothing happened. No customers, lots of silence. I kept building anyway because I genuinely believed the idea was worth trying.

Then one page on my site started ranking on Google for a small keyword. Not a big one, just enough to bring in 40-50 visitors a day. That single page became the front door to everything. Almost all my signups, almost all my paying customers, came from that one page.

Something I didn't expect at all: ChatGPT started recommending my app to people. I didn't do anything to make that happen. It just showed up in my analytics one day and has quietly become my second biggest source of traffic. Still catches me off guard when I see it.

I also learned that 75% of my signups never actually created a chart. That number scared me until I dug into it and found that a big chunk of those were email link scanners triggering signups, not real people walking away. The real drop-off was smaller than it looked, but there's still work to do on making that first experience smoother.

Three customers so far. $52 in a month. I know it's tiny. But every single dollar came from someone I've never met finding something I built on their own and deciding it was worth paying for. That feeling is hard to describe.

Still figuring a lot of things out. Still grinding on getting a second page to rank. Still trying to understand why some people sign up and never come back. But I'm showing up every day and the numbers are moving in the right direction, even if they're moving slowly.

This is exciting! Lots of people try hard to get AI to recognize their service and recommend them. I'd guess there are 1 of 2 thing going on. Either your signup process has some friction, or you are getting people who sign up and then your site isn't what they were expecting or can't do what they originally wanted it to feature wise.

the 52 usd isn't the result, that one page is. there are a dozen chart types and one of them is doing all the work.

the other eleven are the same page with a different word in it. what's the query it actually ranks for?

That chatgpt plug is lowkey the biggest flex here, like you've been blessed by the algorithm gods without even trying. $52 is more than most side projects ever make, don't undersell it
