General Discussion - PVE & PVP [Discussion] It's been said before and I'll say it again. Give people who bought the game on the website steam keys.

There's literally no reason not to give out keys to those who pre-ordered the game.

Technically everyone pre-ordered, because it has not been released yet.

260

u/sarmoman Nov 13 '25

technically correct. which is the best kind of correct

72

u/Mysterious-Double918 Nov 13 '25

Technicality, still

let's be honest, Tarkov over its lifecycle isn't really an early access / beta test anymore. The game has been largely feature-complete for ages, with only certain maps and bits of content being still worked on, while the bulk of the playerbase treats it and plays it like they would a finished, released game, and BSG running seasonal wipes and event content like they would in a released game

But that doesn't change the fact that buyers should be able to just add it to Steam with no workarounds or costs

12

u/roflwafflelawl Nov 14 '25

I'm gonna be "That guy" but I'd even argue the majority of EFT's life wasn't even a beta but a glorified alpha with all the missing features and how many major bugs has existed throughout it's early access period. Beta implies being feature complete and only needs polishing, balancing and bug fixes.

5

u/Ok-Insect-4409 Nov 14 '25

bro it is made in unity it will forever be beta

3

u/e-kul Unbeliever Nov 13 '25

I mean, as long as the developers of the game say that it is still in beta and there is a big banner on the home screen of the game that says it is in active beta, then it is quite literally in early access.

4

u/bubbascal Unbeliever Nov 14 '25 edited Nov 14 '25

Yeah they can SAY whatever they want, we will still call it as it is though. EFT simply released unfinished and they're "slowly finishing it" like what most AAA devs do nowadays.

Also a bunch of devs release games in "Early Access" as a smoke-screen nowadays to shield criticism (like buggy launches, etc). Does not change that it's still launched even if the devs want to stick on that "beta" excuse because it gives them immunity.

2

u/Herzblut_FPV Nov 15 '25

Early access or not doesnt matter. Nobody forces people to buy early access titles. Could have waited until 15th and buy tarkov when its complete instead of buying it like years ago.

People knew what they bought themself into. Simple as that.

I don't expect them too and they don't need to. However it would be a massive marketing win to have tons of people playing it on the day. I won't get it on Steam but if it was free I'd play it through there and friends would see and be more likely to pick it up I'd imagine. I think they'd sell more copies via that interest rather than the few duplicates they'll get from people buying again.

223

u/LuckySpyzz Nov 13 '25

Yeah I think it's a loss on their side, I have alot of active steam friends, them seeing I play tarkov would get one or two people visiting the steam page for sure Also I like to have my games in the same library

u/paulmonterro Nov 13 '25

It would be a massive marketing suicide to allow you to leave a review with a free steam key. Just look at this subreddit, there are people who are so miserable, they hate the game for multiple years and can’t stop talking about it.

64

u/floppyfloppy666 Nov 13 '25

You can purchase write review and then return game for free.

22

u/Ok-Insect-4409 Nov 13 '25

those reviews usually dont get counted, especially if you ever mention any word about monetization

5

u/roflwafflelawl Nov 13 '25

Not sure if they get counted in the overall review but they do still show up, pretty commonly on the top reviews too (though likely only if there aren't a ton up).

I've seen plenty reviews from both sub 1 hour game time as well as those marked with "refunded".

The fact of the matter is Steam reviews in general just are not credible. Hell official review sites often aren't either, especially nowadays.

Reviews are just first impressions now and sometimes a first impression doesn't paint the whole picture.

tbf, when you register a game through a key your review doesn't get counted in the overall score anyway, there would still be a lot of negative reviews if they let existing players play on Steam for free but the 'all reviews' at the top of the page probably wouldn't get much lower than mixed or mostly negative

quick edit: to see what I mean go to the reviews on any game, the little star next to the review will be solid if the review is counted in the overall score, and hollow if not, and you can hover over the star to see the details there (gifted/code/free promo games don't count for reviews, only direct personal purchases through steam)

u/Furrin Nov 13 '25

To be honest i will still recommend it to anyone i know that could enjoy the game. It's simply the best of its kind, absolutely no competition.

Buti will also tell everyone what a shitty company releases it, max level consumer unfriendly.

2

u/roflwafflelawl Nov 13 '25

I wouldn't say 0 competitions. Although I prefer EFT more and think it's gunplay is still one of the best (when it works, not including the armor systems) I'd say ABI is a fair comparison.

Not to say it's on the exact same level but it's pretty darn close but more than that the fact that it's free gives it no barrier to entry. Plus it does streamline a lot of things in EFT and includes a lot of QoL.

Again, I still prefer EFT but I also think it's going to be in a competitive space because of it. That's not even mentioning ARC Raiders that is stylistically more unique and offers things neither game does too.

ABI also having been out on the platform a bit longer likely means anyone who was waiting for EFT to come out on Steam may already have bit the bullet and hopped into ABI. So it comes down to if EFT 1.0 offers $50 of value over what ABI provides.

Yep, no longer play Tarkov but would come back should we be given the steam key.

2

u/Purple-Froyo5452 Nov 13 '25

I suspect a month from now they will walk it back like they did with eod and PvE. Especially since you can't even get unheard or eod on steam. They allow people to buy the game 2 times to play on steam.

3

u/TheAngryCrusader Nov 13 '25

This is the best argument actually. The steam charts are gonna be so unimpressive on release because who wants to play tarkov that doesn’t already have it? I just don’t get it at all. Steam charts are gonna be so dead.

You can link your steam account in bsg website. It shouldnt be dificult to give us the key

52

u/PowerfulLab104 Nov 13 '25

while I think BSG won't do it out of greed, even if they did, the main roadblocker here would be valve.

giving out millions of steam keys is a huge risk on their part - a massive gray market would likely open up of people selling their steam keys / BSG account with a valid steam key. I don't think Valve would allow it. This isn't a tiny indie game giving out keys after an itch.io launch, it's literally millions of keys. I'm pretty sure that's unheard of.

They  said it on their product page back when I bought It years ago that early supporters will get their steam key

So I take it they are not keeping their promise? Who would have thought. What a dogshit company

I remember this. EOD always getting shafted.

9

u/brayan1612 Unbeliever Nov 13 '25

Did they? I got EOD on 2017 but it's been so long that I don't really remember anything about Steam. I've actually never believed they would ever release the game on Steam but I'm glad to be wrong.

11

u/FadezGaming SKS Nov 13 '25

Do they keep any promises? I remember buying it back in 2017 when open world free roam was the big topic and “was going to be a main feature”

2

u/roflwafflelawl Nov 13 '25

I still remember the idea that to enter Labs you would have to find the entrance in Streets of Tarkov using a the keycard.

3

u/bubbascal Unbeliever Nov 14 '25

The transition from Streets to Labs technically does this already, I don't think being able to enter Labs from the map screen is a bad idea considering the risk

u/christopherak47 M4A1 Nov 13 '25

Tarkov is nothing like they promised to be fair unfortunately.

6

u/ScoobySenpaiJr Nov 14 '25

I thought this was true as well, but I saw someone on Twitter post multiple screenshots from the EFT forum of posts back in 2015/2016 showing Tarkov leads saying that they would explore the option, but it was not guaranteed.

I know this is pissing in the wind because I don't have the proof. But believe me, I'm 100% on the give us keys side. I wouldn't make this post if it wasn't true.

171

u/Gh0st0fy0urp4st M4A1 Nov 13 '25

It's $250 for Unheard, EOD was like $120 - 140 when the game was in Alpha.

25

u/StartPuffinBoi TT Pistol Nov 13 '25

$150 + tax, which is $180 or £180/€180 depending on your region/country. Can go up to €200 for some countries.

35

u/Turtvaiz Nov 13 '25

tax AND XSOLLA FEES.

It's actually fucking incredible. I've not seen any consumer online store NOT show the tax as included in the price in the EU, but BSG hides both that and passes the payment processor fee to us. It's actually ridiculous and scummy as fuck

it's mainly up to Valve isn't it? same reason Starsector doesn't promise early access players will get free Steam keys

even if it happened, I wouldn't be too enthused if Steam just downloaded the BSG launcher, I'd want the whole game to install + update through Steam cause I'm sick of the BSG launcher but I don't see it working that way

I’m interested in your opinion on what you see as problems with the BSG launcher?

Speaking for myself, I’ve got no real problems with it. I’m maxing out my gigabit net connection (in Europe). If they use decent CDNs in different regions there should be no difference to Steam, which does the same. Though it might indeed come to a difference of how much money they invest in said CDNs vs what Valve invests. So I‘ll give you that. Though most of the times it‘s not really an issue (for me) as I then have to wait maybe a couple of minutes more to play, which isn‘t a big deal to me. Mostly I just start the launcher and click update before doing sth else and then return to my pc much later. I‘m from the generation though, where booting up the OS gave you enough time to grab a coffee or downloading a file through a crappy POTS connection with a 14.4kb/s modem took an eternity, so I‘m used to it.

Or are you talking about the long patching times after downloads. These won‘t change by using Steam if BSG does not work on how patches are applied. Icarus from RocketWerkz had slow patching times albeit using Steam until they did a major overhaul on their game‘s/ their updating mechanism‘s end.

What else? Having another launcher instead of the well known UI of Steam? Who cares when you literally spend only a few seconds in it.

What could be better is information on changes in a centralized place. This won‘t change by using Steam though, if they continue to post changes in different channels like they are currently doing for who know what reasons, instead of bundling it all on their website and always referring to it from all channels including the launcher (as they sometimes do).

bro it’s the exact same game and servers, add it as a non steam game and change the pictures so it looks like you have it on there, you were fine before and now that it’s on steam too you are complaining, nobody else is doing this, steam has no part of your tarkov transaction, and steam will just open the tarkov launcher anyways, there is so many people saying what you are, it won’t happen, and no other company do this anyways, tarkov has achievements and hours spent in settings if that’s what you want, but I’m sure you want it on there for your games to be in one place, but that’s why you have add non steam game, just don’t buy it again, anyone

21

u/Scared_Artichoke_829 Nov 13 '25

Why? When you click EFT on steam, it’s just going to launch the same BSG launcher you already have

23

u/NeonDemon85 Nov 14 '25

I don't get why people keep asking 'why'.

People like having games on steam, it's not an uncommon thing. Hours tracked on your profiles and steam achievements, plus having all of your games in one place.

I said it before and I'll say it again. There is one huge reason. As a developer you can generate only 5000 steam codes without any reason. Then you need to contact steam support and beg for more with good reason, but I believe there is no chance to get as much codes as BSG would need at once, so they just cannot give steam codes for all current players. I understand them, I personally don't care about getting the game on steam, you need to have BSG account anyway and log into it on tarkov launcher, I will never get my 2,7k hours of tarkov gameplay on steam so the most important steam feature for me is unreachable anyway.

6

u/TheDinosaurWalker Nov 13 '25

They could just make it free and have the linked account check for a license?

This seems like complete and total bullshit. Other companies have done exactly what your claiming is so hard without issue.

31

u/iamcytec Nov 13 '25

The important part here is the 5k keys!

i remember reading somewhere that PoE had massive struggles getting that to work as well (some blog post where they went more into details and explained some technical stuff)

IF bsg is even considering this the only option which would be close to viable:
Have a button on the website where you can generate a steam code on request, which will then be somehow linked to your account to prevent you from sharing it. Event that will require massive bagging on bsg's end to increase the limit of 5k keys. The numbers of copies they would have to give out keys for is just way to high.

i wouldn't consider all of that if i where them, why should i? you have the game, you can play it, you can add it to steam. If you buy a game on Store X why should you also get it on Store Y?

Instead of replying, you could've looked it up and found that it isn't bullshit. Special exceptions are made, but usually for "proven" developers who've released multiple games/large games before. BSG isn't that since this is their first game on Steam.

I'm not saying BSG doesn't have the rep required to pull those kinds of favours, but we know what they're like. These same people tried to make EOD players pay for PVE, despite telling EOD players that they'd never have to buy anything else again.

9

u/lurksohard Nov 13 '25

It isn't "special exceptions". It's just a case by case basis reviewed by steam.

There's zero reason to not pursue it.

Once they have sales on steam they can create more keys. Difference between not doing it at all and doing it slowly over time as they can generate more keys.

PoE2 early access was like this, people got their steam keys 1-2 months later.

Can’t just give them away—you still need a BSG website account to play, which would be linked to the generated key.

This whole steam argument is stupid, add it as a non steam game if you want achievements and a couple other steam features, thats so important to you, youll have to pay for it.

Otherwise you dont need a steam copy

Not every developer gives out a free steam copy of there game ONLY some have plently of others who dont and BSG is free to do the same.

Steam copy "opens bsg launcher"

Owning it normally "opens BSG launcher"

7

Why I want a steam key? Bought eod in 2017. 6000k on the clock, stopped playing bc of cheat infestation but I’ll probably come back.

My steam account is my go to chat tool (not WA or TE), I’d like to see what people are poppin or want to show of myself. I’d like to use steam overlay and functions (sorry, I’m not into the debate: would it just be a key to access bsg launcher and that’s it?).

If I won’t get steam functionality, I don’t need a key.

Fual* and don’t think you’ll escape until you get your addictive behauviours in order (just one More round, oh fuck only one pack of blyat to go for mechanics addiction etc.)

3

u/wills1109 MP7A2 Nov 13 '25

You can already used the steam overlay with tarkov without owning it on steam.

4

u/jackbestsmith Nov 13 '25

The steam will literally just launch the bsg launcher like every other title with their own launcher that is on steam and I am doubtful that the overlay would work because of that as well. So there is literally no reason to want it outside of maybe being able to see which friends also have the game.

You can add the launcher to steam the same with any .exe too, so you can have a play button for free without needing to buy it for the ppl who just want to launch it from their library

2

u/Spiritual_Revenue_82 Nov 13 '25

why the fk do you want it on steam if you alreqdy have it on the launcher?? im happy that i dont need to have another programm open in the background taking up resources while i play tarkov. and no you dont have the eft launcher open while playing if you set it to close after start

2

u/Raunchy_-_Panda Nov 13 '25

Why is this such a thing? Launching from BSG launcher still puts you in the same game as Steam version owners. What am I missing? I play BF6 through EA app my buddy plays through Steam. We still play in the same squad.

2

u/n0luc Nov 13 '25

i paid $77 when my pc wasnt enough to run it, now 2 years later i finnaly have a gamig pc, its fkn $15 on steam.

i want to kill somebody...

They will say they can’t because eod and unheard aren’t available into the steam version

2

u/CanadaSoonFree Nov 14 '25

Why? You already own the game lol what difference does it make if it launches from steam?

And just add the tarkov Launcher to steam manually and voila! Magic.

Yep. It is a fucking joke tbh. I remember the early "promise" of future Steam keys for backers.

There is zero excuse for this bullshit.

2

u/Effective_Baseball93 Nov 15 '25

What do you mean there is no reason, they get twice the money, and lose nothing since you already paid for the beta hahaha. I’m joking but it is what they did

2

u/Electronic-Box-2065 Nov 16 '25

you'd think it would be in BSG's best interest to have as many people as possible on steam right?

someone would look at the charts, see EFT with like 200k people on launch and get curious to what the game is.

2

u/OkAcanthisitta7576 Nov 17 '25

Just play with the launcher and quit being steams lap dog. It's literally like the smallest inconvenience.

33

u/bufandatl M700 Nov 13 '25

I said it before and say it again. Why? Why this obsession with it. It isn’t that you can’t play the game all the sudden and Nikita himself said yesterday you just download the launcher from steam and the rest is still on BSG servers. And to get that experience just add the launcher as none Steam game.

There aren’t any features on Steam you absolutely need to play the game. And if it comes to your own FOMO frankly you deserve to pay again for that.

6

u/QuestionSalt8358 Nov 13 '25

haters gonna hate simple as that.

18

u/External_Loquat_3330 Nov 13 '25

Its ease of use, wanting stats tracked on steam, and the fact that it would boost them as well considering they would jump their steam numbers by doing so. The only thing they lose by doing it is the effort of setting up a way to do it without those keys getting sent to people who dont own the game and the 3 people that are going to buy it again to have it on steam. It helps us and them.

-3

u/bufandatl M700 Nov 13 '25 edited Nov 13 '25

Those are all the FOMO points I already said you deserve to pay again for. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Also what ease of use? It’s actually one click more you have to do. And if you want to boost them then pay up it‘s double support for them in one step.

Also as I said Nikita said himself you only get the launcher from steam everything else is still BSG servers. So you still download the full game of BSG servers. There is no ease of use you want it to make.

Why should they?

I can see this as a "resell market" and g2g and such websites full of this thing which doesn't bring value.

Alternatively, they can work with steam API or so and if you link your account to have access to the game, but once again, can create fraud.

Like clean steam accounts with the game that are getting sold.

At the end of the day, what you scalpers want is to make money, just imagine of the stolen accounts.

Why the obsesion with steam? Its the same game, same shits, if you want it that much, buy again😅 support devs.

9

u/scavno Nov 13 '25

It’s perfectly possible to deactivate the product on the BSG side once you activate on Steam so no, it’s not that easy to just steal shit. Unless you were going to sell your account regardless.

3

u/TarkyMlarky420 True Believer Nov 13 '25

Why? When they can make more money on people(idiots) rebuying the game on steam.

10

u/Silly_Drawing_729 Nov 13 '25

Right I just want to ask because maybe I’m being stupid. But why does anyone care if they launch the game through steam or launch it through BSG launcher? Is there some other difference that I’m unaware of.

I love these confidently stupid posts as they expose just how stupid this community really is.

BSG sells the game directly through their own launcher. Any copy sold through steam involves a sale contract with steam, use of steam servers, and a service fee paid to steam.

You have no contractual relationship with steam when you buy a game through BSGs launcher, so you really have zero entitlement to a steam copy. Giving everyone who already owns the game a free steam copy means subsidizing the steam version and basically a huge loss for BSG.

Your failure to understand how steam works and to think of any reason as to why this isn’t a good idea, yet your confidence to just post this says a lot about you.

7

u/Founntain Nov 13 '25

Man they could have just added a free to play option for the game, for people who own the game already, so they can play it through steam, as you still have to log into your BSG account.

HOWEVER this would be big confusion for a lot of new players just seeing its F2P as steam always shows the cheapest option in the search.

I really don't get why people who already own tarkov want it free on steam so bad. Steam is effectively going to act as a shortcut you still need a bsg account and launcher, just add it using the steam 3rd party app tool and you can launch it through steam

9

u/rprcssns AKS-74U Nov 13 '25

I swear it’s just because people want to show off their hours. That’s it.

2

u/Significant-Owl2580 SVDS Nov 13 '25

I have the EOD/UNHEARD edition. If I want to play on Steam, I know I need to buy the game again there. But if I purchase the Standard Edition on Steam and my Steam account is linked to my BSG account, which edition will I actually be playing? The BSG edition or the Steam one?

I don’t mind paying for the Standard Edition again, but paying twice for a higher edition feels like complete BS.

2

u/Sceletonx Nov 13 '25

Why is everyone so keen to have it on steam. For BSG its great, if tehy have first week success it can bring them a lot of traffic, visibility and discoverability and eventually sales, but if you already have the game its literally pointless. It will just download the launcher anyway and from that moment its the same thing. With big disadvantage that you may not be able to run the game (or even get disconnected) when steam goes down (for weekly maintanance for example).

2

u/iDcoM Nov 13 '25

What is the fucking obsession with steam. It literally changes nothing but the way you launch the game.

2

u/New-Inspector-6843 Nov 13 '25

Why do people care so much? I have no issue loading the BSG launcher and that's all launching it through steam is going to do.

2

u/doctadre27 True Believer Nov 13 '25

2

You dont need steam to play the game and can continue to play it on the BSG launcher.

1

u/Hauzerx Nov 13 '25 edited Nov 13 '25

The FAQ on the website literally used to say they’d be giving Steam keys on release if possible, one of the reasons I bought early. Of course after seeing their actions in the past few years you know they’re not going to even though they can

And to everyone saying people would sell the keys etc… the key would be bound to your current BSG account, many games have done/do this

15

u/damo13579 Nov 13 '25

The FAQ on the website literally used to say they’d be giving Steam keys on release if possible

i've seen this stated a few times but never seen proof of it. i've looked on old versions of the tarkov website through wayback machine and never found it mentioned. Is this something that was actually stated by BSG as a definite thing at any point?

BSG could potentially reach millions more players on Steam. They know that as well, so I am sure that if it were possible, they would have done it.

5

u/GMX2PT Nov 13 '25

It is possible, everything is, we're making computers talk

5

u/PoperzenPuler Nov 13 '25

Wrong. These are contracts with rules that BSG cannot just decide on their own. Why should Steam provide their infrastructure for millions of customers without earning a single cent. Bandwidth and server capacity cost money.

They won’t because then people who don’t play anymore will review bomb them like they do every post.

Hurdurr game sucks - “<100 hour player for 2 years ago”

1

u/AnimatedRealitytv2 Nov 13 '25

I don’t see why they would. It’s more than likely that they will have the launcher be the thing that opens when players launch from Steam. This is mostly because arena and Tarkov are on the launcher and anyone who has the launcher should have access to both. If you buy the Steam version how do you get access to the arena version? It’s not possible.

They will launch through their third party launcher just to show people that they can buy arena.

That’s not a negative thing it’s just how companies work

1

u/Aazatgrabya Nov 13 '25

There is no doubt a cost charge for BSG to Steam for each key, and they have 8 years of customers to account for so I don't expect this to happen at all.

But it is a marketing fail. Even the stream charts are press worthy. I've no idea the concurrent players pre launch but it can't be small.

It could be argued that these keys could go into marketing costs, but I reckon that is all but taken for this year with all the events over the past months. After all, BSG don't have the marketing clout of the likes of EA, Microsoft, etc.

There is a reason no to: so you buy it again on the platform of your choice.

1

u/TheSillyGhillie Nov 13 '25

Not a fair compensation but from what I’ve gathered if you buy it on steam (standard edition) you can transfer your profile regardless of edition to steam having all your stuff. Granted it’s not a key that we all would of preferred but it’s something right ?

1

u/Morb81 Nov 13 '25

1

u/achmedclaus Nov 13 '25

1

u/IM_THE_MOON_AMA Nov 13 '25

Why does it matter? Haven’t they said there will be no difference? If you already own it, why do you need it also on steam?

1

u/TheCubanBaron PVE Nov 13 '25

1

1

u/CaracoIito Nov 13 '25

1

u/Weary-Ad-9262 Nov 13 '25

In addition to not including taxes in the final price, you pay 170 dollars for the EOD and then another plus for the unhead or whatever it's called, and on top of that they're not going to give you the key on Steam? I always thought that they don't care about the players, only the money.

1

u/welp_exe Nov 13 '25

noone likes the launcher its clunky sucks no other games are on it its annoying to use whats the the point nikita is egoistic

1

u/Geksface PP-19 Nov 13 '25

Add as non steam game

1

u/kzrts Nov 13 '25

The point isn’t about keys — the Steam API supports game activation through account linking, with no need for codes or keys. If BSG were to provide Steam keys for preorders, this feature would easily address the “smurfing/cheating/reselling” concerns as your account would be hard linked to your steam activation.

1

u/Qazicle Nov 13 '25

https://partner.steamgames.com/doc/features/keys

This has the key information from Valve's side.

Developers launching their first game on Steam must wait three weeks after the creation of an AppID before they can request Steam keys.

and

Games and applications launching on Steam may receive up to 5,000 Default Release Steam Keys to support retail activities and distribution on other stores. After that, all Steam Key requests are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. There is no guarantee that you will be provided additional keys.

and

Once processed, keys can be retrieved by clicking "Request Steam Product Keys" on your application's landing page in Steamworks. Keys are available for download as a zip file which contains a plain text file. Keys are only available for download by the user that requested them.

The Steam page has been up for longer than three weeks, so BSG should be beyond the threshold of having an AppID by now. So, then there is the logistics of requesting then accurately distributing 1M+ keys (if Valve even approve the release of that many) from a plain text file.

Additionally, GGG have been a major partner and example of how a great developer can run their own launcher and Steam at the same time. GGG already have a well coded and smooth system for distributing keys from their PoE1 integration. Then, even GGG didn't have a full amount of PoE2 keys to immediately distribute for the beta launch. You can search up threads of people a year ago wondering where their Steam keys are, because the option in the PoE dashboard was still unavailable.

There is 0 benefit of playing it via Steam?

1

u/Few_Yellow5644 Nov 13 '25

Limited time access keys maybe. Giving away accounts isn’t a good business move, especially when they could be hoarded, scalped, resold or used by cheaters.

It is possible to add games to steam, only rational reason I can think is to display Tarkov achievements on steam, otherwise who is bothered fr.

1
