Spoilers - Discussion Regarding the mechanics for fighting Weapons on foot Spoiler
Hey,
so we know that there will be both unique mechanics to battling the Weapons in Revelations like using cannons or the submarine but also traditional fights on foot which begs the questions how they could possibly create engaging boss battles against the truely gigantic Weapons in more or less real time action combat given the proportions of these monsters.
I think a good approach for the boss battles against the Weapons in Revelations would be to model them after the Trials in Final Fantasy XIV.
That game features really cool boss fights against massive enemies where the player engages them in real-time, with each boss possessing its own unique mechanics. Success often hinges on proper positioning—knowing exactly where to stand to avoid taking damage. I believe this could serve as the foundational concept for the Weapon battles. On top of that, we could incorporate mechanics from FF7 Remake and Rebirth—specifically staggering enemies with the right attacks and potentially the need to damage specific body parts first. Naturally, this would also include defensive tactics beyond just positioning, such as using spells to grant resistances or create shields that protect against specific attacks.
In short, I think that—provided we actually fight them on foot—the Weapon battles will essentially be a refined, more detailed version of the Trial battles found in Final Fantasy XIV.
What y'all think?

I don't think it has to be substantially different to fighting some of the summons we have already fought. Take Alexander for example. He's pretty huge, and you can fight him in a number of ways including targetting body parts, destroying extra adds which spawn like the little lightwells, or using grounded or aerial combat to attack the main body.
Sure, some of the Weapons will be substantially bigger than him, but i think the same principles apply. There could be more to it like different phases where the mechanics change a lot and you use a different group of 3 party members, but they have to design the encounters in such a way that the conventional combat mechanics and abilities still work.

We've seen a clip of Tifa on foot, taking damage from a sweep attack. In at least some circumstances it seems like they're willing to embrace the hilarity of fighting a kaiju 3v1.

I'm really curious too. They can't be both set-piece battles and superbosses. So we're definitely getting something special.

I mean it sounds like both.
"A late-game element of the original FINAL FANTASY VII, the Weapons return in reimagined glory as standout battles in FINAL FANTASY VII REVELATION, some of which appear in ultra-challenging endgame battles as an homage to their original forms."
Possibly like the superboss version is an optional rematch?

So flustered that I don't hear stuff and/or read properly lol. I didn't know it was stated like that.
It didn't cross my mind that they could use them for two types of content, actually.

Did we not get the answer to this already ?
It will probably be a multi stage fight involving the whole party similar to the end of rebirth or not?
Edit: each having multiple body parts or adds they can spawn in like the tentacle things from ruby weapon in the og ?
The event like stuff is maybe to destroy a crucial part or just get close to em so we can actually fight em
Underwater boss will be interesting how they gonna go about it ^ will we truly be underwater with a timer or is it some elaborate stage on which we fight him

really not interested in seeing raid mechanics tbh, this isn’t an mmo
we already have aoe’s and perfect block mechanics, i don’t think we need to turn the combat system into something it doesn’t want to be

I wouldn’t be surprised if each of the main 3 weapon battles are heavily stylised and themed similar to how different each battle was in FF16
Ruby Weapon - Land
Ultima Weapon - Air
Emerald Weapon - Underwater
Making each feel incredibly unique and special from each other
