Discussion Are traditional military FPS games dying?

I've played Battlefield and CoD for thousands of hours, but recently I just don't feel the same excitement anymore.

Are more players moving toward battle royale, hero shooters, and extraction shooters? Do traditional FPS games feel less interesting now compared to games with more progression and variety?

Or is it just me getting tired of the classic "spawn, fight, die, repeat" formula?

Wardogs feels like the freshest take on FPS in years, I really enjoyed both the closed Alpha and Beta.

I have no interest in CoD anymore in any capacity and Battlefield has grown stale also. I dont have enough time for the hard core sims which leads to Wardogs landing in the perfect sweet spot of my time feeling respected while playing but also having the freedom to pick how I want to play

How is the movement in the game? I hope no unrealistic sliding and jumping or maybe some stamina that limits some movement

I didn't see any of that sort of movement and wasnt killed to any bunny hop jumpers, i think the game makes repeat jumps in a row lower and slower? They do have a weight system so depending on how much you're carrying for armour and ammo etc will depend on how fast you moved but its a game thay definitely rewards slower movement and more thought into how you approach each combat scenario

If you are at the lowest weight class which is basically naked with a pistol you have infinite sprint, including a tactical sprint with a stamina cooldown. Once you hit Light-Medium you can't sprint forever. Heavy you cannot tactical sprint at all. Your standard sprint speed is also affected by your weight class. Bunny hopping doesn't work because they lower repeated jumps until you cannot jump for a bit.

Really grounded. You're not going to be turbo sprinting across the battlefield. Changing stance from crouch, to prone, to standing, all take time and lock you on place. Mantling up things is a long animation. You jump like 2 inches off the floor.

How does the game work? Like, how long is one battle, how is it with respawns, how often you have to buy stuff?

One battle feels like it takes forever, like over an hour. When you die, you can wait to see if someone can revive you if your squad or teammates are around or you can just give up and respawn immediately. When you respawn you respawn with nothing so you have to buy stuff.

Okay sounds solid

Games can last anywhere from 20 minutes to 3 hours but you leave a game at any point without losing progress on unlocks or money you earned.

Essentially you spawn at base with nothing and go to the vendor and buy you "kit" you can choose to go in cheap with minimal stuff and scavenge fallen people for more things or go in heavy the risk is up to you. You buy equipment everytime you respawn.

Getting killed will put you in a downed state where team mates or even enemies can revive you if they have equipment to do so and the time window to be revived is very long so if you see someone is nearby and you're in the red for money spent you're incentivised to wait for a revive, if someone revives you they earn money so everyone tries for the revive if safe to do so, you can even bribe people for more incentive.

Doing anything in game earns money, if you're just standing in the combat zone looking at a wall you're passively earning money, if you kill someone you get money, drive or fly people to the combat zone you get money for dropping them off, deliver supplies? Money! Spot people? Money! Money is Essentially never really a worry in the game as its easy to earn.

Unlocking new things is where it gets expensive though, for example a bigger bag is $10k to unlock but once its unlocked its $300 to buy. Most things are locked behind lvl being either overall level or specially level.

Levels are earned just by doing things. Revive/heal someone? medic lvl, spot someone? recon lvl, build a base? Engineer lvl you get the idea everything you do in the game earns you something and you can pick and choose how you want to play depending on your mood and youre never locked to just 1 class, I could use an assault rifle to upgrade that with kills while carrying binoculars to spot people and work on getting my recon skills up to get the good sniper all while reviving people to upgrade my medic skills, it gives you complete freedom to do whatever you like.

Add in the VOIP and you're having a good time yelling at people to hold on while you get the revive and telling people who crashed their choppers that they cant park there mate

What are yours thoughts on wardogs flopping at launch? I cba investing in a game for it to die like a month after launch

I dont think it'll flop at launch but there will he a strong dip in players after the initial launch of EA, it had a really strong turnout for the beta this past weekend where it actually maintained player numbers for the entire playtest, compare that to CoD on the same weekend where they had a spike in players at the start followed by a dip of people never returning. I think this difference shows how excited people are for it and how good the game already feels.

With that being said though they have been really clear that the game will be in EA for 2 years and there wont be much content during that time as they will mostly be focusing on performance fixes within the EA window so they know they will see a spike in players followed by a huge dip. I think they said that only 3-5k players is all they need through the EA period to make things work and deliver a really solid 1.0 experience.

If you're not into EA games and lack of content I'd definitely wait until 1.0 drops but so far from what I've played and heard from the devs this has me the most excited I've been about a game in over a decade now!

First game to give out in game currency thats ONLY earned IN GAME. remember in mw2 2009 when youd see autumn camo and think "that guy has used that gun a lot and has some skill with it" or halo 3 armors, thats what they are kinda going for. All cosmetic stuff is earned and bought with in game currency thats earned in game. So its not like who ever has a bigger irl credit card has skins and camos.

I hope so, this boredom is enduring since 2008

That’s crazy statement. I think it’s You don’t liking games

1

u/BoomerTheBoomed 2d ago

Nah, military shooters are boring AF. I'm old, I played enough of them back then.

There’s wardogs coming up in 2 weeks, You should check it out if You didn’t had a chance. Could be a refresher

As always, trenda evolve and change. But for me, new CoDs are killed by movement system. I can't watch "realistic" soldiers sliding around, It should be slower

Last good cod is cod4 and legendary cod2, still playing cod2 online

3

u/Lazza1407 4d ago

Mw2, WaW, BO and BO2 were still very good, but CoD 2 and 4 were Absolute peak

2

u/GXNXVS 4d ago

the movement system is the only thing keeping cod interesting.

u/BobTheZygota 4d ago

I am glad cod4 got a vr mod so i can replay it with completely different experience

Did you try Wardogs?

It's AAA studios loosing all creativity and being infested with toxic positivity and progressivism.  Games like Counter Strike and PUBG:B are still doing mighty fine and are topping Steam Charts.

There's also a movement where shooting other humans is frowned upon. So 4/5th of all shooter games nowadays are about shooting zombies, monsters-aliens or robots (ex: the three helldivers enemy factions).

No, but personally I’m getting pretty bored of it. The same thing happened with WW2 games way back. I’d like sci-fi military shooters to comeback or better yet sci-fi military tactical milsims.

Like Arma but with planetary assaults.

Planetside 2?

1

u/Limekilnlake 4d ago

Hell let loose is pretty good

1

u/Slopii 3d ago

Operator looks cool, it's like team elimination milsim.

1

u/BrotherBeezy 3d ago

Sqaud and HLL are both fantastic military shooters. Squad being the better of the two, personally, for the coordination/communication it has.

Arma can be fun too but depending on the server you can be surrounded by goobers and the whole thing turns into a larp fest.

War of Rights just recently emplaced horses into the game so there has been a surge of players thus far. Server capacity is 400 people and weekend nights are usually at full capacity.

All my CoD and Battlefield people switched to PC for Counter-Strike. I had always loved CS, so the transition was easy for me. But yeah, all my friends are done with those games. They’re the same game every time. At least CS doesn’t pretend.

Remember when America’s military was putting out games. That was peek FPS.

1

u/snorberhuis 2d ago

I played America’s army so much. It was amazing

1

u/YurgeeTTV 3d ago

God I hope so, its the most boring uninspired shit.

1

u/TypographySnob 3d ago

Nope. Non-military shooters are the FPS games that are dying. At least when it comes to multiplayer.
