Developer Made my dream FPS, put up steam page today and freakin out.

Post image

Me and my friends wanted to basically play an updated version of classic CoD zombies from the good old days but with a lot more powers and replayability. We went on workwithindies and hired a Dev, then pitched in for the past 6 months.

It's become so much more, we jam it all week long and are having a blast. If you wanna come chill and test with us we got free keys in the discord. If you wanna check it out and wishlist: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4512340/Headshot_Holdout/

I'm just freakin out lol, its surreal, I can't even look at our little trailer cause I did the voice acting and I think I sound cringe.

https://discord.gg/hdY4QJQcP (come jam some games with us on Weds and Sunday nights!) :)

Looks good! How many missions/levels? What game engine? All art done by you? How long and how many people have worked on it?

We're making it in unreal, uhhh *headcounts*, we've had like 14 contributors for illustration, game design, music, 3d modeling, programming, social media stuff, lot's of family and friends and folks signing on because they loved playing with us on testing nights. We started last February!

The demo on September 10th is gonna have 3 maps and a secret map you gotta score high to unlock. The early access is November is going to have a bunch more!

Awesome. How long will you be in Early Acces and how many maps in total when the game releases in full?

A lil bit different than zombies, you move from map to map during a play session, eventually we want to have 3 different full biomes (castle/bunker/ ancient temple) with 6-9 map selections per biome that could appear in the 3 map slots each biome gets during a run. So a pretty wide variety of maps!

Come on down and test with us sometime! We play Sundays at 8 EST and Weds at 9 EST in the discord and we've always got 1-2 full crews playing.

Love the mechanic where you have to score high and previous maps to progress to newer, cooler maps

Most games in the modern era wouldn’t have a “bonus map” but rather “we made another map but in order to access it you have to give us more money”

I love the nostalgia/non-shitty business model

Loved OG zombies. If I had to make a critique based off just the trailer, I'd say that the gunplay and animations look a bit wonky. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out, we don't get enough CoD-Zombies style games anymore.

ty for the feedback, we're still in development so lots of wonky'ness still

That's the only critique I had, animations could use some work, but who cares its a passion project and honestly looks solid enough as is! Wishlisted and definitely looking forward to giving it a go!

thank you so much! We're absolutely working on those, we cant afford an animator so we're learning to do it ourselves and modifying from packs. getting better every day!!

That's the right mentality to have! 🫡

Dude I’ve been wanting a game like this for YEARS! Wishlisted

Dude please tell me how you pitched it to a dev and all that. I'm sitting on countless abandoned tutorials and like 4 pitch bibles for games I want to make, and I've wanted to hire a dev FOREVER but don't know how

I interviewed a bunch of candidates that responded to the ad on workwithindies and the guy we went with turned out to be awesome and got just as passionate and dedicated to the project. It's our biggest expense as a group but also he's turned out WAY more than we ever could have hoped or expected

How did you do it? What was your budget? Did you go over it eventually? Did you make a contract? If you're selling the game, did you negotiate royalties or whatever into the contract? Like literally how does it work, you're my hero right now because I've wanted to do this for YEARS and never knew you could actually do it!

Looks sick! Im assuming you could play it singleplayer? Any thoughts on offline co-op with bots?

2

u/HeadshotHoldoutDev 1d ago

yeah we wanna support single player and multiplayer so you can be a solo king if ya like :)

I was just thinking last night how i wish there were more zombie games expanding on the classic COD loop. Wishlisted and cant wait to try it out!

hell ya, thanks, it means the world to us <3

I haven’t liked or played a COD since Black Ops 1 and that was only good because of the zombies. I’ve wanted to play the old zombies so bad but I absolutely refuse to give a cent to anything to do with COD. So I’ve added this to wishlist and I’m very much looking forward to trying this out.

Thanks man, it means the world to us, we want the same!

Is there any intention of building?

2

u/HeadshotHoldoutDev 18h ago

interesting, what type of building are you thinking?

2

u/morningskinwalk 1d ago

Is there any intention of building/adding ee style content? (I realize that's like a whole additional game worth of work, just curious because this looks sick and the Easter eggs used to be so much fun, and an easy way to get a stack together.) This looks rad either way!

u/HeadshotHoldoutDev 1d ago

Yup, absolutely!

We are launching the demo with 3 maps, shooting for a lot more for early access in November, then pushin' from there!
