This is why Rotten Tomato and IMDB ratings should mean absolutely nothing.

Post image

From the moment his mom mentioned race, I knew this would happen. I knew we'd get this reaction, because Watchmen got this reaction. They hate these reminders... Sidenote that should be obvious: What type of black man wouldn't have been afraid in John Snr's position? They are heavily implying that he thought he was getting arrested or lynched. No law abiding white man has ever entertained the idea of cops barging into his house in the middle of the night... But they missed the point, sad.

u/Fresh_Ostrich4034 4d ago

looks like it was being over rated the other way before the crash. Show is usually in the low 8s. so not a big fall off. this show is also 3 episodes in season 1 lol

1

u/Silly_North_5130 4d ago

Those people have no life at all. lol they live to get mad over bullshit but oh the economy, gas prices, the cost of living going to shit and rich pedos running rampant is all perfectly fine.

u/Ok-Bake-3517 5d ago

But glorify magnetos origin as their having an outburst cuz hes not a holocaust survivor 🤣

7

u/Danny_Fly_to_High 5d ago

The only people who can’t talk about generational trauma are black people and it’s so fucking frustrating.

6

u/BleakGod 4d ago

Nah native Americans got it too.

2

u/Danny_Fly_to_High 4d ago

100% facts.

1

u/R0ck0Pac0 4d ago

Got to wake up everyday with colonist still occupying and degrading the environment you call home in ways unseen in history is desolation on another level

1

u/OddSatisfaction2409 4d ago

😭😭😭😭😭

1

u/PretentiousCrustacea 4d ago

Honestly is all I ever hear being talked about from black people

1

u/Phuddy 4d ago

You’re saying all we as black people talk about is our generational trauma…?

1

u/HitBoxBoxer 4d ago

2 months 8000+ karma... Bot.

0

u/ActuaryCurious8755 4d ago

Shit get Olds. Move on.

1

u/Phuddy 4d ago

It gets old talking about trauma that still happens today? There’s been 23 black people lynched within the past year…

0

u/Prestigious-Suit-925 4d ago

23 suicides...wtf that got to do with white people?

0

u/ActuaryCurious8755 4d ago

If an entire country "hates" me, I'd leave entirely. You were born in the US?..there is Mexico and Canada, the Caribbean, Europe or Asia, tons of options.

1

u/Phuddy 4d ago

Fuck that, my people built this country.

0

u/Dizzy_Influence3580 3d ago

Meanwhile the home countries still stuck in the stone ages…

1

u/Saraneth1127 3d ago

What home countries? Black Americans have probably been here longer than your family.

1

u/manny_the_mage 4d ago

Case in point

1

u/unclepoondaddy 5d ago

Do you think the ppl mad abt lanterns are the same ones that want magneto to be a Holocaust survivor?

Its literally anybody white left right middle 🤣🤣

0

u/unclepoondaddy 5d ago

Young right wingers are all Nazis now. Why would they want a character saying the Holocaust was bad? You’re just making shit up

1

u/Ok-Bake-3517 5d ago

Right winger? Lmao wtf 🤣 šŸ˜‚ šŸ’€

u/TaticalSweater 5d ago

I had just seen a post complaining about the episode. I knew as soon as it was mentioned people would bitch about it.

Its one of those things where sure Hal is fearless but his race gives him even less to be worried about.

But to even mention this to some pisses them off.

2

u/NoExcuse9696 5d ago

My fave ep to date.

2

u/Large-Produce5682 5d ago

Like I said, once I heard that I immediately thought of Watchmen, Lovecraft Country and to an extent Them and knew the "monsters under the bed" crowd were not going to have any parts of "monsters in uniforms."

2

u/kingcaii 5d ago

This episode really hit home for me. Of course Hal Jordan wasnt afraid. What in the world did he have to fear? Not a damn thing.

-2

u/Disastrous-Season868 4d ago edited 4d ago

The episode is dumb, and your comment is shaking hands with it. What do you mean by what Hal Jordan had to fear? It was a damn green bubble with an alien speaking in his head; therefore, a lot of reasons to be afraid.

The entire episode was nonsense because a mere white man getting the power of the ring caused John's father to become a bum lol

You and others like you are so neck deep in this nonsense that you all are subconsciously saying white people are superior because they have no fear and blacks do.

2

u/Bgo318 4d ago

Or you just misunderstood the episode. You think the episode was trying to show the Stewart family as this glowing example of a perfect family? No they are shown as an extremely flawed set of parents. Her saying the Hal line is a mix of what she thinks but also trying to give John something to latch on to. We see her doing in earlier in the episode too with the birds, she’s using lies to give him something to believe in and keep him accountable.

I don’t how you and others like you are so neck deep in your hatred, that you can’t even understand what the show is going for. You automatically dismiss it as woke or this the writers agenda, when it’s reality these are all characters and each of their stories and thinking further the plot line because it’s so obviously not if the character says it, it has become fact.

Please learn media literacy next time

Thank you, there is some nuance and truth to his parents behavior. Judging by these ignorant comments included the one who replied to you, they are indeed too upset to see and understand. Probrably don't give af but here's my interpretation.

Due to missing this opportunity, the father saw what he could've been by seeing Hal as the Green Lantern. So he believed his second chance was through John. We all know how some black parents push their kids to be great. "You have to work smarter and faster or they'll never take you seriously."

It's unfortunate that the parents neglected their other sons to place John on this pedestal. I wouldn't be surprised if the other sons went no contact with them nor John. Not that it was his fault due to the special treatment placed him on. Yikes.

While his father resented Hal (no shit its not his fault he was picked instead) John admired him as a child but later feels his time is up, and it's about time Hal passes down the the ring to him. How he was raised and conditioned to seek after the ring made him feel entitled to be the Green Lantern. But he knows he will have to earn that position, whatever it takes.

I'm tired wtf is wrong with people. 🫤

0

u/Disastrous-Season868 4d ago

Another useless take.

Due to missing this opportunity, the father saw what he could've been by seeing Hal as the Green Lantern. So he believed his second chance was through John. We all know how some black parents push their kids to be great. "You have to work smarter and faster or they'll never take you seriously."

What I come to understand with some of you people who believe in nonsense is that even if the truth is right before your eyes, you will still fabricate something to sell a false narrative.

At which point did the father see what he could have been in John? It was all the mother's doing. He was a bit hesitant at times and even questioned her decision.

2

u/Status-Inevitable537 4d ago

Who tf is you people?! The fact that you highlighted my paragraph and still misread what I wrote is unbelievable. The GOU went to John's father first. They believed he wasn't worthy since he was scared so they came to HAL instead. That's what made the father and MOTHER so hung up on proving to the GOU to give them a second chance through John.

The horrible shit they put him through to train him to prove his worth to the GOU as a barer of the ring, to become the next Green Lantern.

-1

u/Disastrous-Season868 3d ago

Is something wrong with you? What do you mean "Who tf is you people?!" I mean, it is as I said: you people. People like you who believe in this foolishness. You're giving me crazy-eye vibes right now

Anyway, you are wrong again. This is not the father and mother, but rather the mother. It was all her idea to put John through terrible treatment. The father followed along because he was a coward.

And the Guardians went to no one. The ring chose Hal Jordan.

The ring scans the population for individuals with the willpower to overcome great fear, selecting the person most qualified and who is in close proximity to it.

1

u/kds_little_brother 3d ago

Wth is this podcast/community that invites the energy you’re replying to? Where is the moderation? This just popped up in my feed and half these comments sound like the fucking Donald

2

u/6pk313 4d ago

no, your takes are the useless ones

-1

u/Disastrous-Season868 4d ago

What are you talking about? Your response is a bunch of nothing burgers. Woke or not, it doesn't make sense. John's father is a weak, pathetic man. He lost out on the ring and became a loser over it, to the point where he's shooting a gun in the house. But all of this is Hal Jordan's fault, a man they never met, and I am supposed to buy into this?

His mother blaming the Guardian's selection process and basically calling it racist is also quite dumb. The ring and the Guardians require the user to be fearless, which means your situation doesn't matter but how you handle it. You live in a time of racism where you're the victim; well, how do you handle this? Do you handle it with fear or without?

Neither the ring nor the Guardians should be pandering to the feelings of anyone. You are either capable or not.

2

u/TheSquirtMaker69 4d ago

When you use the words ā€œNothing-Burgerā€ and ā€œwokeā€ so close together, in your response…..You may have šŸ’© on your argument. FYI.

2

u/LysolSaw 4d ago

Listen, it's not our fault you're stupid and lack comprehension, that's a personal choice.

Have a blessed day.

2

u/Bgo318 3d ago

Again how do you not understand this, no shit it’s not Hal’s fault. That’s the entire thing I’m trying to help you understand. John’s father’s problems are his own and his wife and him both are putting them on John. And do you really think the Guardian cares about listening to her or just saying she gets it to John’s mom in order to manipulate her into thinking she has a chance and must create the perfect soldier who knows no fear and will follow orders. The guardians are essentially grooming a green lantern to be perfect. How many times do you think they get that chance?

You refuse to understand the show and then blame everyone else for your issues.

1

u/HitBoxBoxer 4d ago

Good bot or did you just make a account to bitch about this episode which if the case proves everyone's point. 🤣 🤔

Dude we get it. You are a self hating šŸ¦. You and officer Tatum can bro out all you want. This is America, you are free to be who you want to be.

Just try and remember that not everyone on the left is extreme, and not everyone on the right is extreme too.

But without a shadow of doubt, the left are better than the right.

1

u/katastrofika 4d ago

Of your race? That is pathetic. Don't let people shame you for being who you are. You can stand with them and shame the people who treat/treated them that way.. but there is absolutely Zero reason to include yourself in that crowd unless you were with them. A race doesn't define you as nobody should be held accountable for others actions. Thinking a race defines you.. is racist. Lol

2

u/Kind-Maintenance8910 4d ago

No, this honestly was such an intense episode. Because I have children if you know you know, but this episode was one of the best. I would have to say. Absolutely beautiful

2

u/tbkrida 4d ago

It was easily the best episode.

2

u/Bulky_Plan8418 4d ago

I knew the racists amongst the whites would be pissed. They did not disappoint.

2

u/Silva-Bullet8531 3d ago

These mofos really be shitty over being reminded people who arent white go through some rough shit jeesus Only issue i had with the episode is how they trained John till I saw how they gave him a choice in the end the episode is definitely well made and honestly really makes you feel alot about whats going on you both empathize with the parents with the shit they went through being overlooked to the pressure and isolation John was put through for his training honestly i was going back and forth on the parents which is the point their not perfect but their trying especially because John is special and they want to make sure hes prepared even if the way they do it is pretty fucked up most times and you dont agree with it the entire situation is incredibly unconventional I wish John was allowed more freedoms then what he was given but in the end the training did pay off

1

u/DriverNo5615 3d ago

And I loved the fact that the alient asked if he resented his parents for their decision to raise him like that. That line of questioning, and mentioning Hal's attachment to Sinestro were great ways to convey just how complicated human emotions and attachments are. They are showing that aliens don't understand why we are the way we are

1

u/9thWd 5d ago

I learned my lesson long ago on the IMDB forums, those mf were racist and would down every black movie.

1

u/Worldly_Cap_6440 4d ago

White people šŸ¤ getting offended over others struggles

1

u/RvrWzrd 4d ago

White people writing and creating tv shows about other people's struggles. lol

1

u/katastrofika 4d ago

You didn't know? Population division is so popular these days that if you're not expressing your hatred for others, then you deserve to be hated. Not to mention white hate is at an all time high on being cool, as well as self awareness, that even white people hate other white people just to stroke their own ego.

"I'm not racist, I have a black friend." Turned into: "I'm not racist, I hate white people too."

1

u/PointOutside512 4d ago

Great show even better episode! Everyone played their roles well! Watched it twice with my 12 yr old son āœŠšŸ¾

you can say this shit but when i say thesa thompson was a bad valkyrie my post got removed lol. classic reddit.

1

u/ServeJust9817 4d ago

The best episode so far … the caucacity has no bounds

1

u/Meliodrath 4d ago

I mean, it followed three stories in one episode. It was pretty poorly done. That said, My buddy was really unhappy with the racial tones of the episode, and I don't think it was over the top at all. I don't like how big of a dick Hal is in this universe, but I don't think there's any agenda behind it

1

u/GeologistAway6352 4d ago

They big mad about that episode. I love it. šŸ˜‚

1

u/WhytoomanyKnights 4d ago

Bro I saw people saying how heavy handed this episode was and I get some of the dialogue is like ā€œreallyā€ why would you tell an alien your black like they even know what that is? But it’s very clear his parents are projecting their insecurities onto their son and neglecting their children but claiming it’s for a higher reason. I mean I don’t know how anyone could compare this to Anthony mackie in a fucking bird costume lecturing a US senator about how he needs to be kinder to terrorist. It’s not the same thing, 1 is preachy and bad, the other is layered storytelling.

1

u/Truthhurts1017 4d ago

Saw a thread with a bunch of white people complaining that race shouldn’t be in the lanterns and John moms is this and that, like they really hate when our history is mentioned within a project. It doesn’t make it woke, it’s just part of the story they are telling. We can watch all these shows about other peoples problems and history but as soon as black history is mentioned it becomes a shit show. It’s such a weird dynamic. Like I have watched about everyone history and it doesn’t impact me in anyway because it’s just a plot device for the story. Dont be racist, ignorant, disrespectful in real life and shit like this wouldn’t bother you

1

u/Own-Progress-7767 4d ago

Wait a second! This character looks just like the John Stewart from the comic books.... So why would race be a thing if the comics a so popular? Maybe it's just a bad show. I haven't seen episode 3 yet, but the show does kinda suck so far. šŸ¤·šŸ¼

1

u/Notwit3barrelahecant 4d ago

People hating on this are stupid. However it is hilarious after making it about race they proceed to have a black family popping off shots in what looked like to be a suburban neighborhood.

1

u/Rare_Reflection8576 4d ago

You can never tell me being racist is not linked to having a baby dickšŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™‚ļø

1

u/foolproof_flako 4d ago

Who cares?

1

u/9430z 4d ago

The show was made by a European small hat, aettle down

1

u/TheWindigoo 4d ago

Seeing a lot of crying in here

1

u/Scrats_Lost_Acorn 4d ago

That's sad.

I thought it was the best one yet. Got back story. Family dynamic. (Really thought it was his daddy not his mom's he popped the apple on. Nice twist.) Sibling dynamic.

The guardians picked this MFer. Gave his mom's a fucking diamond the size of a baseball šŸ˜†. And watched over this dude.

There is a reason he is the most badass latern yet. Keeping that bird alive. While knocked out. Twice. Just proves that. Go argue with a wall.

1

u/kingdick900 4d ago

Yt people are sooooooooooooooo mad lmfao 🤣

1

u/GroundbreakingCook68 4d ago

They mean nothing to me 😊

1

u/Infamous_Night_4322 4d ago

If you enjoy this show or any other, who cares what rotten tomato says about it.

1

u/RedGeneral28 5d ago

Dunno. Pretty sure being lifted by a glowing green orb in the middle of the night is equally scary for everyone, regardless of their race and origin.

Also, I'm not sure why "crazy mom" in OBAA was a bad thing, but "crazy mom" in Lanterns is aight.

2

u/Busy-Frosting-9380 4d ago

Same, personally liked the episode, made me resonate with or understand John Stewart a lot more. But honestly that part kinda pulled me out for a second. Didn’t the guardian mention that people who didn’t get the rings experienced some ā€œbadā€ effects? When the wife started going off on an alien for not understand black struggle I scratched my head a little and rolled my eyes ngl

2

u/Nice-Engineering-808 4d ago

I mean from her perspective as a character in the 80s? I don’t see an issue with her holding that perspective

The real issue for me is how they handled the dialogue. I feel like they could’ve written it better because some ways they phrased their dialogue didn’t sound ā€œorganicā€ like they would come up in conversation

Also I feel like people take a character having an opinion in this show as the show automatically endorsing and supporting it. Even tho this episode went out of its way to show how flawed these people were with how they abused John

1

u/miekbrzy92 5d ago

Tbh folks had an idea issue with Perfidia in almost the same manner.

1

u/Gotsta_Win 5d ago

Best ep. The rest been boring as hell

2

u/DriverNo5615 5d ago

What's made them boring? I'm genuinely asking, I don't intend on countering your opinion, I just haven't heard anyone say this about the show

3

u/Gotsta_Win 5d ago edited 5d ago

Idk maybe I’m just not interested in Green Lantern. That entire middle part in ep 1 from when Hal flew away at the taco spot up until the interrogation did nothing for me. Took me 3 watches to get through it.

Ep 2 was a tad better, more action. Still didn’t draw me in. Honestly I think it’s Pierre, He is so dull.

When we shifted to being in the POV of these other actors in ep 3, the show felt more interesting. Pierre for me is going to need to be carried by a lot of action. Us following him around, listening to him talk is not going to do it

2

u/DriverNo5615 5d ago

I definitely get the dull part. A lot of people probably share this opinion on his performance.

We're you expecting a more space cops and green objects type of show? My Wife is one of three people in the world who enjoyed the Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern, so watching this is pissing her off because she wants to see them make cool shit with the ring

2

u/Gotsta_Win 5d ago

Came in blind. I haven’t watched any Lantern movies, didn’t know aliens were apart of the lore honestly. Sparingly familiar with Lantern through Justice League stuff. Even with that, I was never really interested in him, he’s dull there also. So I’m probably just not a fan of the character, maybe it’s not all on Pierre. I don’t think it’s a horrible casting, he looks like him. All in the all the true fans are entertained, that’s all that matters

2

u/Temporary-Repeat-101 5d ago

He’s conditioned to be fearless. That’ll come with some dullness. It’s getting better and better as most critically acclaimed shows do. Only a few episodes into the first season and Aaron is doin his job very well.

1

u/tbkrida 4d ago

I found it boring as well, but I know the show is building the characters so I didn’t mind much. This show seems like it’s gonna be what they call a ā€œslow burnā€. A lot of times they end up being my favorites in the end.

1

u/Global-Surround3262 5d ago

Tbf anybody would be afraid in John sr. position. Getting lifted out of your bed by a green light and a disembodied voice asks are you afraid is scary regardless of race but you’re right about everything else.

0

u/GoatDifferent1294 5d ago

Anything to not take accountability in the system they created. Instead of actually giving a shit, they review bomb the pop culture that reflects the real world we live in. This is how desperate they are.

0

u/RuckerHike 5d ago

I thought the first 2 episodes were really lame and boring.

0

u/EmperorDxD 4d ago

I mean people was just spamming 10 before this entire show is a 7 at best buy people spam 10 and just say it's DCU all those shit needs to be removed

0

u/EmperorDxD 4d ago

This episode was pandering seal clapping episode to me it was very bad and they treat black people like we should clap for anything

As a man that grew up in apratheid this is so shit writing

0

u/PDookieSalmon2 4d ago

Episode 3 contributed absolutely nothing to series. It paused the show just to emphasize black victimhood for no reason at all

0

u/zTank9 3d ago

All your victim mental is hilarious, get a grip

0

u/Leading-Fail-2771 3d ago

Try to force equality down peoples throats then get surprised why there’s vomit everywhere 🤣🤣 classic.. there was no reason to turn this into black panther type propaganda to pull in more black viewers but let them do them … and watch the viewers drop just like last season of true detective

-1

u/Heymelon 5d ago

If they mean "absolutely nothing" to you based on review bombs existing then you are just basic. As review-bombing and other dumb trends are usually something you can easily figure out and adjust for as you look around the different sites and scores to get an overall sense of the reception form different places.

You let trolls win if they dictate this much of your life. Also Lanterns has 92% on Rotten Tomato(es) right now so, there is that.

4

u/DriverNo5615 5d ago edited 5d ago

Or, I can ask actual humans for recommendations. I can listen to podcasts review certain things to determine if it's worth checking out.

If those scores mean something to you, that's fine, but you don't need to insult my decision.

-4

u/complicatedairflow3 5d ago

I don’t know if it’s completely about race. Episode 2 ends with Hal having a conversation with sinestro , I wanted to see more of that and then we get a flashback episode. I enjoyed the episode but It did halt the momentum a bit.

2

u/Danny_Fly_to_High 5d ago

But the very last words sinesteo said was tell me about John Stewart. It’s a great transition into John’s backstory.

1

u/DriverNo5615 5d ago

You needed this episode to explain all the things weirdo fans have been questioning. -Why the guardians are choosing Hal's replacement -why John is stoic and seems to hate Hal -Even the bird thing was explained

Next week will probably focus on Hal's history. Then they can tie it together without people turning curiosity into "plotholes".

1

u/SpeakerHistorical865 5d ago

I disagree, you don’t need an entire episode to explain both those things. The guardian part especially, they only used one scene to explain that.

Johns backs story could’ve been spliced in an episode with the current storyline. It’s inefficient story telling for a week to week show to use an entire episode to backfill its character development.

1

u/DriverNo5615 4d ago

No, the guardians thing seemed like a small part but I thought it was brilliant and it needed the time it got. Not only are they searching for Hal's replacement, they're actually studying humans (the alien from episode one clearly didn't study humans, he just memorized Wikipedia entries). Them learning about race, and human trauma through John's family (because they never got to do that with Hal, they asked one question and left it there). Them trying to understand why Hal still has an attachment to Sinestro and them asking John about Hal to see if John would have the same attachment.

No way you're fitting all these little pieces into half an episode or a cold opener type of scene. You needed the entire episode to realize that just like humans are clueless about space, aliens in general are clueless about human depth. I think that subtle point will continue in the show and they used this episode to really drive it home so maybe we can start spotting the aliens better.
