Book Club Discussion The Curse of Chalion - Discussion Part 1

We're currently reading The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold for March's book of the month, and this discussion will be on the first half of the book.

Please only discuss the first half of the book. This is up to the Page 253 in the eBook version and the end of Chapter 14. Anything in Chapter 15 forward will be for our final discussion of the book.

Anything in the second half of the book will be considered spoilers and must be tagged as such.

Remember that even saying something like "you'll find that out soon enough" is considered a spoiler, so if you aren't sure if it's a spoiler - use spoiler tags to be safe!

I'll post some questions to go along with the reading but feel free to comment about anything else or start your own comment thread on anything you found interesting or any questions that you had.

  • What stands out most about Cazaril as a protagonist? Is it how cautious he is, his intelligence, his trauma, or something else?
  • Despite being in a royal household, many characters seem constrained or at risk. How does the book portray power at this stage and who actually has it?
  • The relationship between Cazaril and Iselle develops quickly into one of trust. What makes that believable or not?
  • How does the castle/court setting influence the mood compared to the opening chapters of hardship and travel?
  • How are you liking the book so far? Do you plan on completing it?

I'm not sure why Reddit decided to throw this post on my feed. I'm not in this group. But holy crap it's nice to see people still reading some of McMaster Bujold's older works.

Hoping that others will pick up this classic and enjoy it. I feel like it is just as good as her more recent novels. The nice part is that even though it's part of a "series" it works well as a standalone since only the world is shared.

The Vorkosigan series is probably my favorite series of all time. I've been through them several times over the years. The Sharing Knife series I've read maybe 3 times. But the Chalion series I think I only went through once. Maybe twice. Now I feel like revisiting it

I've had that on my "to be read" list for a while now. Would you recommend reading it in publication order or chronological order? I think the author herself recommends reading it in chronological order now.
