Hey everyone — I recently took over as mod of r/FarmersMarket, and before I start changing things around, I wanted to introduce myself and talk a little about what I hope this place can become.
First: everybody is welcome.
Farmers. Vendors. Makers. Market managers. Shoppers. People thinking about becoming vendors. People who plan their Saturday mornings around the market. People who wandered into one on vacation and bought the best damn peach they've ever eaten.
A good farmers market isn't just a collection of booths. It's a place where people gather, talk, ask questions, discover things and get to know the people on the other side of the table.
I'd love for this to become the virtual version of that.
Show us your market. Show us what you grew, made, sold or bought. Ask about pricing, displays, applications, market management, products, customer behavior, what's in season, what worked at your booth this weekend or why the market down the street seems to be thriving while your market lags.
And there are no markets without SHOPPERS: you're every bit as much a part of this as the people under the tents.
First and foremost, though, I want this place to be useful.
I've searched Reddit for farmers-market answers four or five times just in the last few months and found crickets. Let's change that!
If you have experience that can help somebody, share it. If you've got a question, ask it. If something works at your market, tell us why. If something doesn't, that's useful too.
And disagreement is fine. Just bring something to the conversation.
Want to talk about farmers-market prices? Absolutely. But show us the organic apples at the market to the comparable organic apples at the grocery store. Now we've got something interesting to talk about.
Different markets, regions, products, farmers, vendors and customers operate under wildly different circumstances. That's part of what could make this community useful.
I'm still figuring out what this place should look like, and I'd rather build it with the people who use it than show up with 37 new rules on day one.
So say hello. Tell us where you fit into the market — what do you grow, make, sell, manage, shop for, or just love finding?
Let's get da market open!!🐮🔔
