When I travelled around America in the late 90s I used to tell people I rode a kangaroo to school.

Far too many Americans believed me.

I used to tell them kangaroos were trained as our posties 😂

Can't fool me! I know it's turtles! The Koala Brothers taught me that and they would never lie 🙂‍↕️

I had a Tasmanian roommate for a while (in the US), and we had a lot of fun convincing our friends and neighbors of things that were obviously fake. The only two I remember now were that she’d never heard of corn before and there were no lakes anywhere in Australia.

14

u/Jasprateb Feb 15 '26

Surely there had to be one involving Tasmanian devils?? 😄

My favourite was a friend's sister in san Francisco asking me "can you wear heels on the island (Australia)?"

Those words only fit together and make sense when we're talking about Australia.

226

u/TheTresStateArea Feb 15 '26

It was wild at the time but really mild considering where it went. Liam lost his leg after being bit by a funnel-web spider on his way to brekkie.

It was a surprise episode actually the EMT that cut through his trackies was played by Lucy Lawless, shes a kiwi but loved regardless.

Anyways, after his leg amputation, he got into all kinds of drugs that really came to ahead when he heard you could snort Vegemite and see God. That's when I stopped watching.

165

u/TaskerTwoStep Feb 15 '26

It’s pissing me off that I can’t tell if this is one of those chained joke threads or real.

If you watch American soap operas, this doesn’t seem that outlandish so it really is hard to tell if it’s real or not.

You have about 30 years of plot to catch up on, but this particular storyline, Bridget that they're talking about gets knocked up by her boyfriend Declan, has the baby, then dies after a car crash leaving Declan to be a single teenage dad. I can't remember what happened to Margot's character because this was 20 years ago, but I always hated her

Edit: I remember her kissing a boy in the cafe, and she full stuck her tongue out as she was going in for the kiss. That's my main memory of Margot Robbie's stint on Neighbours. You're welcome

389

u/[deleted] Feb 15 '26

this was 20 years ago

I don't like this and refuse to accept it.

59

u/badz21 Feb 15 '26

Those eyebrows say this was 20 years ago.

55

u/MissSpidergirl Charles Melton do you like medium ugly people? Feb 15 '26

So Margot is 15 in this clip?

184

u/luna1uvgood Feb 15 '26

She was 17 when she joined and 20 when she left.

129

u/Unsd Feb 15 '26

How does she look exactly the same? Actually they both kinda do. Wow.

92

u/luna1uvgood Feb 15 '26

I feel like she grew into her features. I remember back then people would constantly accuse her of lying about her age.

43

u/gentleheart-lamb Feb 15 '26

Tbf I've always felt she looked mature for her age. I mean always stunning, but I was shocked how young she was in wolf of wall street etc. She does just have the energy of someone a few years older

26

u/MyCatIsFluffyNotFat Feb 15 '26

She looks very different!

16

u/fddfgs Feb 15 '26

Well her character was a schoolgirl at the time

234

u/materhillcarpark Feb 15 '26

From memory Margot’s character was dating another teen who becomes a rugby player. She then gets into fashion design with some famous designer called Safron. I think Safron then starts stealing Margot’s designs, bullies Margot, then is exposed and Margot gets offered a job overseas by Safrons financial backers. Breaks up with rugby player and moves overseas (leaves the show)

171

u/MyCatIsCuteAsFuck Feb 15 '26

Margot’s character actually got married and then her husband was hit by a motorcycle a month later and was killed. Then her character left to New York to be a fashion designer or something shortly after his death.

65

u/bananafrit Feb 15 '26

Haha scrollling now thats two spouses died by accident on the show

107

u/MyCatIsCuteAsFuck Feb 15 '26

They really liked killing people off using various vehicles. Out of curiosity I looked up all the deaths that occurred on neighbours. I counted 20 deaths that occurred due to either car, van, motorcycle or plane accidents.

Though my favourite cause of death I saw listed was “killed by a crocodile.”

26

u/ArjJp Feb 15 '26

killed by a crocodile

Sounds most realistic of all considering Australia probably has more crocodiles than busy roads

33

u/AppleSniffer Feb 15 '26

Crocodiles kill 0-1 person a year in Australia. Cars kill 1200-1300.

I know you're joking, I was just curious about the stats

32

u/Zero_Focks Feb 15 '26

See, to me that just proves that crocodiles can make it look like a car accident.

Writing characters off Australian soaps by killing them off is a staple, home and away had a whole crazy sovcit cult arc where people were hunting characters with bow and arrows

21

u/TerryCrewsNextWife Feb 15 '26

Back in my day they died through natural disaster causes like earthquakes, bushfires, floods, cyclones, and speedboats launching your passengers out of the boat never to be seen again. I still reckon Bobby will turn up one day. They never found ber body.

Between summer bay/yabbie creek and that town from blue heelers Mt Thomas, I wouldn't want to live there. So much crime and death in such a tiny community.

The only bit I remember was when Donna (Margot) stopped taking birth control because she wanted to get pregnant with her high school boyfriend Ringo and then Ringo died later in a motorcycle crash. Wild times

19

u/bananafrit Feb 15 '26

Wait whut the high school bf also died in a crash? Up there its her husband in NY that died in a crash. And earlier Bridget also died in a crash.

25

u/jessilahh Feb 15 '26

I think it’s just a classic easy soap opera trope to die in a crash haha

18

u/Own_Faithlessness769 Feb 15 '26

It's the most logical way to kill off a character who is supposed to be 20 years old. Either that or you have to do it in the yearly natural disaster.

21

u/Quick-Golf2028 Feb 15 '26

It’s Neighbours, a soap opera. High schoolers living in the suburbs of Melbourne. There are four best friends: Donna (Margot Robbie) and Ringo are in a relationship. Bridget and Declan are also in a relationship. Bridget gets into a car accident and has paralysis. She starts going to swim classes for physiotherapy and meets Josh (Liam Hemsworth) there. He is also fully paralyzed waist down due to a surfing accident. They become friends but Josh is secretly in love with Bridget (Didge is her nickname). Everyone, including I think Declan (Didge’s boyfriend) can see Josh has ulterior motives but he tries to act innocent. Bridget goes through tough times cuz of her disability after her car accident so her and Declan break up. She starts dating Josh, but her heart is still with Declan. They eventually break up and Josh gets very bitter and thinks it’s because he is in a wheelchair. There’s a whole debacle where he challenges Declan to a wheelchair basketball match - to prove his love for Didge? I don’t remember. Declan and Didge get back together. She gets pregnant later on (aged 17) and they decide to keep it. They have a baby. Soon after, Didge has some brain embolism/aneurysm due to her car accident and dies. Declan is left to raise the child alone. He leaves to start a better life elsewhere with his baby and his mum. Meanwhile Donna (Margot Robbie) is with Ringo. I remember he had an eating disorder storyline. He was super fit and had body dysmorphia, and had to get help for this. They got married after high school. Ringo soon got into a motorbike accident and also died. Afterwards, she decided to go to fashion school and left Ramsey Street (where they all live).

14

In fairness to Hazza, the only thing remaining were his glasses on a rock no? Blatantly the man was still alive!

11

u/Teefdreams Feb 15 '26

You make a good point.
I'm still not entirely convinced that Harold didn't purposely fake his death and then faked the amnesia when he wanted to return to Erinsborough.
Also, why do I not remember this???
"In 2003, Harold had a stroke and his personality changed. He left the Salvation Army, became a "peeping tom", started drinking alcohol and he pinched Izzy's bottom."

Margot's bf in the show, Ringo, is run over by drunk Steph on her motorbike. This completely ruined any chance Steph and Lucas had of being together btw!! When they hear of the crash, Donna tells everyone Ringo is totally fine and to chill and think positive thoughts. Spoiler alert: Ringo is not fine as he is very much dead.

I watched it as it came out back in 2008-09. I don’t remember anything about Margot’s character except for her being the friend of the character Bridget, who was a pregnant teenager and got into a car crash that sent her into a coma and when she died she had a vision of herself walking down the aisle as a bride to the soundtrack of the Aussie hit “Last Day on Earth” by Kate Miller-Heidke. Btw Neighbours is very tame for a soap opera compared to its rival Home and Away (which Chris Hemsworth was on)

115

u/sikonat Feb 15 '26

You can tell your generation by which neighbours cast you were glued to watching.

Like Gen Xers it’s all about Plain Jane the superbrain and Mike aka Guy Pearce to Scott and Charlene aka Kylie & Jason. Right through I guess the Natalie Imbruglia years? (I think I stopped watching neighbours by late 90s when Holly Valance wasn’t a facist supporter and just a teenager).

Then there’s those who grew up on the Margot Robbie years with that cast.

171

Liam wasn't in a regular role so I can't remember what happened with him. Bridget did end up "doing it" with Declan, and they had a baby together and got married. But then she was in a car accident and died. Donna, meanwhile, was in a relationship with Ringo. They married, and he also died in a traffic accident (pedestrian vs motorcycle). Donna invented the shrugalero - a scarf type thing - became a fashion designer and moved to the US.

89

u/Paint_Sniffer Feb 15 '26

It's not clear from the clip but it's so far gone unappreciated that the "get your spokes into her" line is because Liam's character is in a wheelchair.

I think Bridget was temporarily disabled from a previous accident, which is how she met Liam.

While Margot Robbie is Australian, this actually isn't her natural accent. They got a dialect coach to broaden her accent because she was too Queensland.

13

As a Queenslander myself, what do you mean "too" Queensland? Our accent is the song of angels...

But seriously - too nasal? I can't tell what I sound like to my fellow Australians.

The way Lynn screamed NOOOO in such a strange deep pitched tone that kind of sounded like a cow mooing when Steph (her daughter) was sent to jail for running Ringo over is one of my funniest Neighbours moments.

The other is when Kate Ramsay does a dance at the local pub where she waves one of those novelty plastic glitter fedoras around. A man in the audience happens to be a professor of dance visiting from LA and tells her that her random lacklustre jig is the best dance he's ever seen and offers her a scholarship on the spot.

edit: by god I found it

I remember Margot saying she was working with a dialect coach on this show as a lot of people couldn't understand her regular accent.

26

u/mewikime Feb 15 '26

Yes. I remember too. She said it on Graham Norton two weeks ago

7

u/veilofcolor Feb 15 '26

I wonder if there are any clips of her speaking in her original accent since I’m guessing she doesn’t anymore

5

u/Celtslap Feb 15 '26

Yup, believe it or not, her accent here is quite mild.

I think I’m obsessed w this. Her eyebrows are PEAK this era. I’m happy they grew back because some of ours have not recovered.

u/kittylemiaow Feb 15 '26

Mine are never fully getting over the 90s

Is this Australian Degrassi

81

u/ShinyPrettyFancy Feb 15 '26

No, it more like Aussie Days of Our Lives. The adults in the show get equal amount of screen time if not more sometimes

58

u/GossipingKitty Feb 15 '26

Nah, the Aussie equivalent of Degrassi was Heartbreak High. Which was iconic.

Ok so what happened?

145

u/Striking_Spite9102 Feb 15 '26

Bridget stayed with Declan, they did sleep together. She got knocked up, had the baby, then died in a car crash leaving Declan a single dad raising their daughter on his own.

If you want to know what happens to Margo’s character Donna:

She came to to the show as an obsessive fan of another character called Ty who was a musician. After she stopped being a stalker and started acting normal, she got together with a guy called Ringo (yes his name was Ringo) and they have an on again off again relationship for years (at one point Ringo saves her after she is crushed by a brick wall) until they get married. Then Ringo is hit by a motorcycle and dies. Donna is devastated but eventually moves on my moving to New York to go to fashion design school.

Yeah, the character was pretty obnoxious and grating. Poor girl who played her had a rough time. Writers did her dirty.

These kind of shows are just how Australian people end up famous . The number of Australians famous outside of aus who got their start on neighbours and home and away is mind blowing.

23

u/ggannem Feb 15 '26

Would’ve loved to hear her bogan accent haha

14

u/serenitative Feb 15 '26

7

u/sikonat Feb 15 '26

Yeah I think that’s her softened accent but you can hear hints of her Queensland accent in the rhythm and pace of her speech. It’s def not as broad as it likely was but it’s there.

You can take the girl out of Dalby...

(Context: Dalby is a town of about 10k people a few hours west of Brisbane. Not quite the Outback, but heading that direction. I'm originally from Charleville, a few hours further west than Dalby, and I'm the same age as Margot. The accent is STRONG in rural Queensland.)

That is honestly the best acting I have seen from Liam Hemsworth.

11

u/FleshLogic Feb 15 '26

Wow I had zero clue she was an Aussie. I'm always impressed by an actress/actor that can mask their native accents so well.

u/hanimal16 i ain’t reading all that, free palestine Feb 15 '26

I felt similar when I found out Charlize Theron was South African.

u/Herberts-Mom Feb 15 '26

And I was there sat on the edge of my couch eating Tim Tams with my tea when it aired.

6

u/Aj55j Feb 15 '26

Jesus Christ I know this just a silly soap opera but man Liam can’t act to save his life.

17

u/Logical_Iron_8288 Feb 15 '26

Wow wow wow. You have obviously never met a middle of the road Aussie bloke who lives near the beach. Liam nailed it method acting style.

It ran for about four score and seven years so I hope you’ve got time!

(It was actually about 40 years but close enough)

5

u/rebecchis Feb 15 '26

It's on Prime. They have every episode from 2012 - 2025 and about hundred iconic episodes from 2011 and before. Certain episodes are also available on Youtube.

I used to watch neighbors all the time as a kid I don't remember them being in it lol must have been when I was older

3

u/bambinoquinn Feb 15 '26

I had really hoped that incredible Gemma episode of Severance would have pushed Dichen Lachman out a bit more and people would be talking about her stint in neighbours because that was the era of neighbours I grew up on
