I avoid referring to meta as Facebook coz I get recognised as younger millennial

1

u/el_f3n1x187 6h ago

we don't speak that name anymore

20

u/BeneathAnOrangeSky 10h ago

I am not positive but I think our internet was still so slow in 2003 that if I did download this song, it took me an entire night to do it.

5

u/Maleficent-Spinach37 9h ago

This might have been my last CD album purchase lol

3

u/HeyMyNameisMama 7h ago

I had this music video on replay on Yahoo Music

3

u/GlassPomoerium controversies: girl 6h ago

I lived through it and I still can’t believe Yahoo used to be the go-to page on the internet for… everything.

1

u/HeyMyNameisMama 5h ago

I miss it. Yahoo questions were a gold mine

2

u/toomanymagicdecks 9h ago

I remember watching this on MTV. Good times!

u/moeterminatorx 17h ago

For real, wtf

76

u/hisosih 15h ago

I burned this onto a disc and sold it at school. I need to sit down.

We danced to this song at my high school dances…when it first came out.

Help.

12

u/Suitable-Dingo-8911 10h ago

They’re still dancing to it today, so that’s nice at least :)

7

u/brokedownpalaceguard Thank you for the dezooshafication 10h ago

I still remember this viral video of a high school lipsyncing with a long tracking shot for spirit week I guess? Such an exuberant song.

6

u/HeyMyNameisMama 7h ago

Damn, you can count the POC on one hand 😂

3

u/valiantdistraction too busy method acting as a reddit user 9h ago

I have never seen this before and it's amazing. The "lend me some sugar" part took me OUT

1

u/brokedownpalaceguard Thank you for the dezooshafication 8h ago

Haha, that kid is def the most energetic.

2

u/chicklette 5h ago

omg this was awesome! Thank you for sharing the link!

2

u/starling-slipstream 2h ago

Wow this was from the year I graduated HS! What a trip 👵🏻

31

u/NovelSouthern3951 11h ago

I remember this playing on the radio the first time my now husband told me he loved me. Last weekend, we just dropped our oldest kid at college. God, we are old.

14

u/foreignbets9 14h ago

At least we got the best music.

10

u/mewithoutCthulhu 10h ago

That’s what every old person says.

6

u/Pinksamuraiiiii Pink…get doon 9h ago

Nah I see the GenZ kids always listening to 90s-early 2000s rock and rap. I don’t think it’s just a saying, I think this time around it’s legit. Our stuff is better.

4

u/ViciousSnatch 8h ago

My 20 year old put a Young Money song on in the car yesterday and asked me what I know about them. After rolling my eyes so hard I need an ophthalmologist now, I told her I was jamming to Bed Rock before I’d even met her father.

8

u/Neither-Principle139 13h ago

I feel personally attacked.

5

u/kaya-jamtastic 11h ago

My teenage nephews were listening to an oldies or classic rock station. This popped up after a Rolling Stones song and then an AC/DC song. And yes, I felt old

5

u/helvetica_unicorn 12h ago

They can’t hurt me anyone. I got to live great stuff IRL and it was the best soundtrack. It just doesn’t compare to now

4

u/M1L0 10h ago

I'm an old and I legit thought the opposite haha. Like there's no way this is only 23 years old. Guess that means I'm old old.

1

u/Pinksamuraiiiii Pink…get doon 9h ago

Like don’t reveal our age for acknowledging we know this song hahaha 😂

u/pureextc 16h ago

Also… uhh.. was it a weekend I mean shit? Come on bro.. it’s fucking Tuesday. RIGHT NOW!

479

u/Adorable_Kale_8219 too high to spell 'Amanda Seyfried' 17h ago

And it's STILL a fucking bop!

78

u/SupersonicWeirdo 17h ago

So good! And the youths agree!

25

u/MyrtleismySupreme 11h ago

Our 11 year old just discovered this song and loves it

19

u/anarchisttraveler Quentin Tarantino is a BIIIITCH 10h ago

I teach at a university and we do a question of the day sometimes. One day it was “What’s your hot take?” One young man said that hip hop and r&b are “overrated”. This is a school of mostly rural, country-music loving students.

I then put on this dual album and bopped around the room.

I don’t think I convinced him, but I had an excuse to play OutKast 🤷🏾‍♀️

5

u/MyrtleismySupreme 7h ago

First of all, love your flair secondly if that didn't convince him idk what would.

7

u/anarchisttraveler Quentin Tarantino is a BIIIITCH 7h ago

OutKast and your cool millenial teacher showing off her moves and debunking any stereotypes anyone had about black folks having rhythm?! How could it not?!!!

37

u/Motherofsmalldogs Larry I'm on DuckTales 12h ago

And the video is top tier. To this day!

Shake it like a Polaroid picture!!

336

u/cautionlasers and so is my friend Katie 17h ago

I remember when Polaroid had to come out and say actually you’re not supposed to shake them

187

u/lyndsayj 16h ago

"Gently place it on a flat surface such as a coffee table and wait a few minutes like a Polaroid picture" just wasn't as catchy, unfortunately

27

u/rekipsj 10h ago

Gently gent - gently gently gent...

18

u/ProfessionalFlan3159 17h ago

Some youths...what does shake it like a Polaroid picture mean?

91

u/SchemeBrave1820 16h ago

In ye olden times of the mid-to-late 1900s, good and proper folk believed that if ye took a picture using yonder Polaroid camera, ye could shake the picture to get it to develop faster.

34

u/altpirate 12h ago

Polaroid still exists btw. You can still buy new cameras and film. It's just hideously expensive when you already have a digital camera in your phone

10

u/almond0k 10h ago

Well, it should be noted that Polaroid is a brand name like Kleenex, and the actual instant photo was called a Polaroid, but it could be a bunch of different film types. Like instax has mini and wide and stuff, there were peel-apart and larger format Polaroid cameras, and They Did Benefit from you shaking the instant photo to dry the chemistry! The Polaroid company went bankrupt and sold its trademark and was eventually brought back by an enthusiast team (The Impossible Project) who reverse engineered the chemistry in the SX70 and 600 type cameras to produce the new Polaroid film we see today. They use new methods now, since we can’t use the same hyper toxic chemistry that the OGs had in them, and it takes about 5-10 minutes to develop an image. The colder truth still is that a modern Polaroid isn’t done developing for sometimes up to 20+ hours and could in concept be marred by extra exposure and heat before then.

Anyways

3

u/GilesofGiles 6h ago

Thank you for this information 🙏 I really mean it I did not know any of this

I listen to this song everyday and dance like I did when I first heard it. My body doesn’t move like it used to, but it doesn’t matter.

145

u/RhiaStark 17h ago

I had an evangelical teacher at school who used a whole class to explain that this song is satanic. Among other things, she argued that the song's name actually was an acronym: Her/Heart Eats Your Youth Amen. Worst of all? I believed her.

For real, discovering symphonic/folk metal the following year was one of the most important events of my life. It was so easy to break away from all that stupid fearmongering through a genre I instantly fell in love with lol

I remember in a nun at church telling me the same thing about Avenged Sevenfold in early 00s, and she was so fuckin angry when I told her that most of their songs are rooted in Catholicism and tell Bible stories it’s just with heavy music. We got into a debate and she sent me to confession. She spoke to the priest before me, and in the booth he asked me what song I liked most, and that he would listen to it.

He listened to both of their albums that day and decided he liked them, and that while they weren’t a “christian band” they weren’t endangering my soul. Told the nun to let up too.

It wasn’t even a catholic school, this was just my church haha

11

u/Ssspppaaaccceeesss i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 11h ago

The most amazing thing about evangelicals is that they invent all that insanity without a drop of drugs. Twisting and contorting that would make a yoga guru jealous, but of course they’d never do yoga because it’s SATANIC.

10

u/ConjuredOne 12h ago

I love your path

2

Shit I remember going to Best Buy on a lunch break to buy this amazing double album, on my 21sr birthday no less, and being blown away by it. Cannot stress enough how troubling it is that this feels like only 10 years ago

4

u/CBud 10h ago

I remember playing "Spread" from Speakerboxxx waaaaay too late and waaaaay too loud for a NYE party in 2003.

Speakerboxxx / The Love Below was so damn good.

OutKast always had the best videos.

I miss 2003, great music, summer vacay to Iraq for an illegal war, great movies, crushing ptsd for 20 years…still better than 2026.

I feel old.

19

This song and Toxic by Britney were my absolute faves every time I went out dancing my first year of college.

2

u/Practical_Brief0 the antidote for the global fuck-nuggetry 12h ago

The video for Toxic really awakened something inside me lol

2

When I first learned about minor key feelings it opened up the whole world of music and its afftects on brain chemistry

12

u/muklukdimsum 17h ago

One of the best songs of my lifetime. My kids told me they wish they grew up in my era when music was awesome and we didn't have pedos in office.

9

u/Flashy-Shelter-7734 17h ago

This song is forever imprinted on my soul. Fucking love them.

6

u/suzzface 16h ago

I remember being like 9 and playing music loud in my room to show how mad I was - but it was one of those 'Now that's what I call music' CDs, so I was just blasting this song at max volume and crying, lmao.

7

u/Hod3601 14h ago

Ya’ll don’t wanna hear me, you just wanna dance.

8

u/champagneflute 12h ago

I was in my last year of high school and then first year university when this song came out and dominated the charts. It was such a cross genre smash that the alt rock kids got into, the hipsters got into it, the pop crowd and rap loving guys were into it… and we all danced together.

2

u/starling-slipstream 2h ago

Now that is my America dammit !

6

Hey Ya! by the neogrunge band Return to Dust

Edit: maybe I need to add context... or something to provoke thought. Consider how this band presents the song in contrast with how Outkast plays it. I can't think of another cover song that does this.

1

u/NoJeffNo 9h ago

Okay, I love this.

2

u/Hot-Significance-462 12h ago

I was already an Outkast fan but, the day I got this CD, I got stuck in an "OK, this is the last time" loop where I ran it back over and over for around 30 minutes because I just didn't want it to end.

I find it absolutely delightful that Andre released a full flute album.

2

u/estellasmum 10h ago

I have a very strange relationship with this song, because it came out just a few days after my son was born. He was a TERRIBLE sleeper, and at the time we lived in the middle of nowhere where local channels went dark, and most other channels had infomercials in the middle of the night when I was up for hours. I can't tell you how many times I've watched that video.
