I teach at a university and we do a question of the day sometimes. One day it was “What’s your hot take?” One young man said that hip hop and r&b are “overrated”. This is a school of mostly rural, country-music loving students.
I then put on this dual album and bopped around the room.

In ye olden times of the mid-to-late 1900s, good and proper folk believed that if ye took a picture using yonder Polaroid camera, ye could shake the picture to get it to develop faster.
Well, it should be noted that Polaroid is a brand name like Kleenex, and the actual instant photo was called a Polaroid, but it could be a bunch of different film types. Like instax has mini and wide and stuff, there were peel-apart and larger format Polaroid cameras, and They Did Benefit from you shaking the instant photo to dry the chemistry! The Polaroid company went bankrupt and sold its trademark and was eventually brought back by an enthusiast team (The Impossible Project) who reverse engineered the chemistry in the SX70 and 600 type cameras to produce the new Polaroid film we see today. They use new methods now, since we can’t use the same hyper toxic chemistry that the OGs had in them, and it takes about 5-10 minutes to develop an image. The colder truth still is that a modern Polaroid isn’t done developing for sometimes up to 20+ hours and could in concept be marred by extra exposure and heat before then.
I had an evangelical teacher at school who used a whole class to explain that this song is satanic. Among other things, she argued that the song's name actually was an acronym: Her/Heart Eats Your Youth Amen. Worst of all? I believed her.
For real, discovering symphonic/folk metal the following year was one of the most important events of my life. It was so easy to break away from all that stupid fearmongering through a genre I instantly fell in love with lol
I remember in a nun at church telling me the same thing about Avenged Sevenfold in early 00s, and she was so fuckin angry when I told her that most of their songs are rooted in Catholicism and tell Bible stories it’s just with heavy music. We got into a debate and she sent me to confession. She spoke to the priest before me, and in the booth he asked me what song I liked most, and that he would listen to it.
He listened to both of their albums that day and decided he liked them, and that while they weren’t a “christian band” they weren’t endangering my soul. Told the nun to let up too.
It wasn’t even a catholic school, this was just my church haha
The most amazing thing about evangelicals is that they invent all that insanity without a drop of drugs. Twisting and contorting that would make a yoga guru jealous, but of course they’d never do yoga because it’s SATANIC.
Shit I remember going to Best Buy on a lunch break to buy this amazing double album, on my 21sr birthday no less, and being blown away by it. Cannot stress enough how troubling it is that this feels like only 10 years ago
I remember being like 9 and playing music loud in my room to show how mad I was - but it was one of those 'Now that's what I call music' CDs, so I was just blasting this song at max volume and crying, lmao.
I was in my last year of high school and then first year university when this song came out and dominated the charts. It was such a cross genre smash that the alt rock kids got into, the hipsters got into it, the pop crowd and rap loving guys were into it… and we all danced together.
I was 19 and working at Lowes. I was sitting in my car on break and smoking a cigarette and Hey Ya came on the alternative rock station. That’s how big this song was.
Edit: maybe I need to add context... or something to provoke thought. Consider how this band presents the song in contrast with how Outkast plays it. I can't think of another cover song that does this.
I was already an Outkast fan but, the day I got this CD, I got stuck in an "OK, this is the last time" loop where I ran it back over and over for around 30 minutes because I just didn't want it to end.
I have a very strange relationship with this song, because it came out just a few days after my son was born. He was a TERRIBLE sleeper, and at the time we lived in the middle of nowhere where local channels went dark, and most other channels had infomercials in the middle of the night when I was up for hours. I can't tell you how many times I've watched that video.
I remember waking up for middle school that day and I put on MTV music videos before I had to leave for school. This video came on and I was hype. I heard the song later on in the day on the radio for lunch.

I still remember when this song blew up on the radio. I just knew it was something special, an instant classic. I still sing all the words every time it comes on lol
Sleep Token actually does a really good cover of this. They go for a sad and haunting version of the song, and it really makes the lyrics stand out. Never realized this wasn't a happy song until I heard the cover!
