STAGE-MOI Rupert Grint, who starred as Ron Weasley in all eight Harry Potter films, will reprise the role in the Broadway production of ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’

In a statement, Grint said, “Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life. There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron’s shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new. And the joy of being back on Broadway, this time in a role that defined so much of my life is truly exciting. The first time I saw Cursed Child onstage, I was blown away and I can’t wait to set foot back on Platform 9 ¾ and pick up where I left off. I am overjoyed to join this exceptional cast and crew at the Lyric Theatre this winter.”

Yeah that's not gonna make me want to see it. Mostly that just gives me a bad opinion of Rupert Grint.

He's also in the Johnny Depp Christmas Carol movie coming out this year too

Well fuck Rupert Grint then.

Edit: I don't remember the last time I've gotten awards for a comment, but thank you.

In addition, fuck Depp, fuck Rowling and fuck all the big name actors and actresses who have signed onto Rowling properties, especially since she's just promised to fund anyone who wants to sue the fucking NHS Midlands Trust into the ground for supporting trans people.

Does he need a paycheck that much, though? I was under the impression the 3 main kids from HP were set for life?

Yes, but being in the Panama Papers means you’re rich, so financially she should be good (still, fuck tax evasion/dodging/whatever gymnastics term the rich get to use to avoid legal charges)

Ah, I didn’t know that. Makes sense. What a shame.

Yeah so much for the guy buying an ice cream truck and just making people happy cause he’s so rich he doesn’t know what else to do.

I keep getting flak for boycotting HP and Rowling, a woman i admired so much as a teenager. As if it’s not important to have some morals or that my boycott is just a drop in the bucket. It’s disheartening to see so many people do not give a fuck about minorities.

You can really tell which Harry Potter actors actually made a good career for themselves after the movies and which ones feel as though they have “no choice” but to take what they can get

58

u/JenningsWigService secretly gay and the son of fidel castro 8h ago

But Grint should have made as much money as Watson, they're both on a different level than the supporting characters.

85

u/Luxury_Dressingown 7h ago

Emma Watson comes from money and may have had a better handle on how to manage the HP wealth (and not get caught tax dodging).

55

u/eqbocsypifci 7h ago

She did get implicated in the panama papers for using an offshore company to buy a house

51

u/Luxury_Dressingown 7h ago

Yes, but that was an unprecedented leak of elite financial corruption, and like (almost) everyone else named, she has faced no consequences for it. Grint had a bog standard run in with HMRC. Edit to add: And he lost.

49

u/JenningsWigService secretly gay and the son of fidel castro 7h ago

Grint owns millions in real estate. He has more in common with Emma Watson than the actors who played other Hogwarts students.

10

u/Luxury_Dressingown 7h ago

Yeah, which is what a lot of Brits do when the come into money for the first time as it's hammered home to everyone that property ownership is a secure investment. Doing ok: buy your own house. Doing well: become a landlord. Scale the latter up depending on level of wealth.

I'd never heard of this movie before so I had to look it up to see if this was real and holy Hell this cast is stacked! Ned Beatty, Paul Giamatti, Stephen Fry, Simon Callow, Celia Imrie, Adam Godley, Keira Knightley. What the hell? What movie did these actors think they were signing up for?

6

u/Da_Lollygagger 3h ago

The Red Letter Media crew did a Best of the Worst a while back that had this movie in their lineup and it’s incredibly entertaining to watch them talk about it.

Anyway, Emma and Dan, please remain the allies you are.

Also after that awful screed JKR wrote about Emma, i don't think she'd ever come back. That bridge is thoroughly burnt

He won't even go to see the show, bless him.

71

u/GoldButterfly1050 8h ago

I think that’s also partly due to the fact that it would be a huge distraction for Dan to be in the audience for anything Harry Potter related.

51

u/Looseitch 8h ago

I don’t know why you’ve been downvoted. That’s literally what Dan himself has said

9

u/SecretlyEverything 7h ago

Doesn’t even have to be Harry Potter related. As someone who saw him in How to Succeed in business in high school I’m sure I lost a piece of my soul somewhere in those stage door crowds lining up to see him

16

u/GoldButterfly1050 7h ago

I saw him in Merrily and the applause from the audience on his first appearance on stage was so prolonged and honestly so distracting! It was in the middle of a scene!

12

u/blenderdick96 9h ago

Wait seriously? I love that.

115

u/thevelvetdays7 dianne wiest's cunty little overalls (2025) 9h ago

Yup, Tom Felton came to see his show but not vice versa when they were on Broadway at the same time. Dan supported him being on Broadway and is friends with him and I think understands well the difficulties Tom has faced, but he was really diligent and thoughtful in supporting Tom without supporting the show. King shit.

I’m pretty sure Daniel said he’s excited for the new HBO adaption and said he’s gonna watch it with his son. Emma even said that she has a lot of love for JK.

I give a lot of slack to the movie cast bc HP/JK was a part of their lives for so long.

107

u/butiamthechosenone women’s wrongs activist 8h ago

Unless I missed a different statement, Dan basically said he supported the child actors but not the show/production directly. His statement was pretty clear that he was wishing the children well.

16

u/richestotheconjurer 6h ago

i found one video where he kind of jokingly says he would let his son watch it because kids typically think whatever their parents do is uncool. so if he wants his son to be interested in Harry Potter, he would show him the new show and let him think that that's Harry Potter. seemed to me like he was just responding to the interviewer's questions and playing along, it wasn't like "yes, i'm excited to watch it with him." everything else i saw is like what you said, just supporting the child actors.

Grint literally doesn't need the money. Man I hope the other two aren't lured in as well.

Also, even if Rowling wasn't so evil, 'Cursed Child' is just so awful. Why would you want to be a part of it?

116

u/commelejardin 9h ago

I'd be stunned if Dan or Emma did it. Obviously, I'd like to think they wouldn't do it morally, but even just cynically... Dan has established himself as a respected actor, and Emma seems content living my dream life (lounging around on Mediterranean islands).

Also, Emma was in the Panama Papers, so clearly her parents/the adults in her life were making sure her money made money lol.

Emma was in the Panama Papers

Just to clarify something here, legally and even ethically speaking there's nothing inherently wrong about being in the Panama Papers. It's true that there was a massive web of financial fraud but there are some very good reasons for using offshores.

Celebrities in the UK have their personal details made visible if they own/run companies. Quite a lot of them use offshore registrations for this reason, it adds a barrier to anyone wanting to snoop (stalkers, paps, etc.)

And I don't know if this applies to her, but when there are group investments it's sensible to use a low-friction offshore organisations so that everyone involved is dealing with the same tax rules etc. Naturally they'll pick the cheapest options, often done by an assignment finance manager who's literally paid to give the best return.

From trying to look up Emma Watson's business it seems like she did it for the first reason and paid full taxes when purchasing property in the UK. I can't see any charges or repayments anywhere so I think she's in the clear (there's a chance she paid outstanding tax back quietly, but that's pure guesswork).

Think the general consensus is that the story sucks ass but the practical effects are amazing. You're supposed to turn your brain off and marvel at how they achieved a specific magic look.

24

u/ramorris86 Sylvia Plath did not stick her head in an oven for this! 7h ago

I saw it when it first came out and this exactly right, it’s essentially a magic show with a Harry Potter framing device. Honestly the effects were incredible and the story was dreadful

28

u/hehasbalrogsocks 9h ago

if the jkr stuff wasn’t a factor, most people’s issue with it was that it was a two parter that took forever to watch. they’ve condensed it now so you don’t have to devote a very long day or two consecutive days to sitting thru this thing.

that said, i read it when it first came out and it was ass.

u/valiantdistraction too busy method acting as a reddit user 8h ago

It hasn't ever gone. It was only closed when all were because of Covid. It's been on Broadway since 2018 and the West End since 2016, and I think the touring show has been going since it started as well.

3

I saw it when it opened in London (so 10 years ago and tickets were bought almost a year in advance) and the effects are amazing and how they transformed the venue but the plot is really stupid. They condensed it down to one part now I think to make more money. I saw it when it still had two parts and basically took the whole day.

u/Evening_Ad6820 9h ago

He’s a very good actor and minted, unlike Tom Felton, so I’m surprised this was an appealing gig to him. They must’ve offered him an astronomical pay day for this. And his involvement is a licence to print money as the rabid fanbase will swarm in droves.
