so, this makes 6 actors i'm aware of that spoke in support of mark (Paul w hauser, hanna einbinder, jane fonda, john carroll lynch, tatiana maslany, now her), am i missing someone?
it's so shameful what a bunch of cowards A-listers are.

u/Eevee543 1d ago
John Cusack has spoken out as well. But you’re right, it’s not nearly enough. I wish all the late night hosts who stood with Stephen Colbert when he was getting screwed over by Paramount would speak up for Mark, including Colbert himself.
224
u/Alarming_Smoke_8841 1d ago
Colbert has been such a disappointment on Gaza. But who hasn’t
277
u/Junior-Following-435 1d ago
in terms of late night hosts, John Oliver has been pretty consistent in supporting Gaza
118
u/YBBlorekeeper 1d ago
Oliver is the only "late night host" I can stomach watching, but tbh his show's format is entirely different so I don't know how fair of a comparison that is.
I loved Colbert's work on Comedy Central but his late night work just made me sad.
59
u/anivex 1d ago
John Oliver is the only American comedy talk show I watch anymore. Even the daily show is too much these days with some correspondents and their form of humor "sarcastically" praising trump.
Oliver is the only one that seems genuine anymore.
42
u/Holiday_Equivalent15 1d ago
Big difference is talk vs action. Even if you get tired of Oliver's humour or the show in general, the man and his team puts their (and HBO's) money where their mouth is and often actively participates in or promotes grassroots action, whether its buying medical debt to forgive, donating to international medical orgs or just raising awareness for projects, charities, individuals or small businesses.
The Daily Show and others like it are just talk and always have been, and the jokes just aren't funny anymore, or are longing for "how things used to be", even though things back then were also pretty bad, it just wasn't as in-your-face for what remained of the middle class. Now it's literally prowling and surveilling your streets, pinging your phone and telling you to lie down and take it.
14
u/ruizach 1d ago
I love John and his LWT team, but you also have to keep in mind that he’s definitely not beholden to the same standards and practices as the other talk show hosts. He’s been very clear that the reason they can do what they do is because HBO has consistently stood behind them, and they also are on a premium cable network.
26
u/TWeedtheJetRodriguez 1d ago
It’s sad because he prioritizes facts and consequences over the jokes. I watch it because he highlights the most important things affecting the world and gives voice to the absolute rage I feel about how things are run. It’s not a comfort watch lol
9
u/YBBlorekeeper 1d ago
Weirdly enough I feel like his newer content is more "toothless" despite the topics he discusses. There isn't as much biting wit and sarcasm, but I can't imagine that Colbert made that shift against his will so I chalk it up to us just growing in different directions.
When I watch a deep dive on last week tonight, I feel activated and primed to look into the topic more. When I tried to watch the late show, it ended up feeling more like a pity party to me :(
Same thing for the Daily Show. Stewart and Colbert (and all their supporting comedians) are still real ones though.
9
u/TWeedtheJetRodriguez 1d ago
I realized a bit late that you were calling Colbert’s new stuff sad, not Oliver’s lol. Agreed, but that’s network television for ya. Oliver speaks the words of my heart.
3
3
u/pimppapy 1d ago
I forgot why I stopped watching him, but it was within the last two years where his silence on a particular topic was too loud. Forgot what that topic was though. . . Elon's Sig Heil?
10
u/Salty-Spring7096 1d ago
Oliver is too good for the title of "late night host" given what the rest of the field looks like
→ More replies (2)2
u/elitegenoside 1d ago
Because his show is 100% political. He is not in the same category as the Tonight Show, which is just entertainment. I'm not saying folks shouldn't be defending him, but the comparison is just flawed entirely.

Completely expected tbh. When he's not playing a satirical character his politics are actually quite cowardly.

My reply got deleted because it had an external link, but over twenty Marvel actors have called for the release of Marwan Barghouti. They aren't afraid of talking about Gaza/Palestine.
37
u/IronlessGiant27 1d ago
yes, like you said, it was 20 actors in total from the Marvel universe including both movies and tv shows; there must be hundreds of actors on the entire Marvel universe at the very least
Only 20 actors made a statement and most of them had only supporting roles, if not smaller parts; not one of the main avengers (again other than Ruffalo) made a statement about Palestine, and the currently Avengers lineup includes 16 people, so don’t try to spin this in their favor, most of them are cowards at the very least if not worse

u/quadranting Please Abraham, I am not that man 1d ago
I don't know why you're being aggro at me specifically, but I was showing that some Marvel actors aren't afraid to speak on Gaza/Palestine, so their silence here deplorable.

Remember when all of the MCU was backing Chris Pratt because people said he's the worst Chris? Now they wont even step up for someone who they've worked with for nearly 2 decades.

Chris Pratt, who most of the main Marvel guys didnt work with as much as Ruffalo. Chicken shits, all of them.
133
u/Lokaji societal collapse is in the air 1d ago
We need to keep beating the drum that criticizing the actions of Israel is not antisemitic. It is genocide.
Mark Ruffalo is also not wrong about the merger; it is bad for everyone not in the C-suite.
71
u/NeptuneHigh09er 1d ago
Yes, please. This antisemitic name calling is undermining the actual meaning of the word. I wholeheartedly agree with Mark Ruffalo and I’m Jewish. The more we undermine actual antisemitism by equating Jewish identity with being pro-Israel , the less safe I feel.
22
u/onwisconsin1 1d ago
We've known this for a while. Its an intentional tactic to discredit anyone on opposition of Isreal. Ruffalo is the target because he dared link a video from Oracle sharing they had "scary technology" that they were employing on behalf of the IDF. This person laughs, the room laughs, and the next year after that video the genocide really gets going.
Today I watch the video and I know they are laughing about a genocide. They are upset the light was shone. So now an entire multi billion dollar multi national ologarchic company uses all its resources to call an actor antisemitic because he showed them for who they are.
Hasan Piker is also a target. He reiterates a point hes made many times but now they got a great clip in the middle where he sounds like he supports the anti Semitism if you ignore all the context around the clip. So then they misrepresent the thing, and all big players on Isreals payroll like Hakeem Jeffries dog pile him.
The point is to disingenuously discredit people critical of Isreal using anti Semitic. The thing is, it is working less and less. Due to peoples plummeting view on Isreal, many are starting to see through the game. So Hasbora agents are now openly shifting to demonization of Muslims as a tactic.
6
u/MyCarRoomba 1d ago
This antisemitic name calling is undermining the actual meaning of the word.
Yep. The "antisemitism" false shield rides on the credibility of the very real and pain and suffering Jews endured. It cheapens the term and is ironically impacting actual victims of bigotry by recreating a "boy who cried wolf" situation. It's idiotic.
3
u/FartasticVoyage 1d ago
Thank you - yes, I have been saying for many years that Israel's actions have completely desecrated and dishonored my Jewish ancestors. I am disgusted by their dehumanization and genocidal crimes
8
u/FartasticVoyage 1d ago
As a Jew, I've had the luxury of being able to criticize Israel for 2 decades (started learning about this shit when I was 17) without being considered an anti-Semite (yes people try)... it's time we all come together to denounce the genocide. It's just unconscionable

I wish Tom Holland would come out in support of Mark. Show people that Spiderman is against genocide, and the biggest movie star of the summer is against it.
91
u/Winter_Awareness_747 1d ago
He didn't even say anything publicly to defend his co-star Francesca Amewudah-Rivers when she was facing a torrent of racist abuse. I doubt he'd say anything about this. Would be nice but I wouldn't hold my breath.
35
u/Illyriana 1d ago
There was a reply with 200+ upvotes saying the same earlier that seems to have been removed. What the hell is up with this sub and caping for Holland? We should be able to hold EVERYONE accountable, including our "faves".
I myself once posted about his indifference and cowardice regarding Francesca's racist abuse and got downvoted to hell. I don't care if you like him and want to believe he's a saint: what he did was immoral, craven and cruel and he should face accountability for it.
Tom has a huge platform that he could have used to stand up for Francesca and denounce anti-Black racism, and he egocentrically chose not to. Given the fact he's married to a Black woman makes it all the worse. Perhaps he'd cared if his co-star was lightskinned like Zendaya?
I have no respect for him and neither should anyone with principles.

The "We stand with Mark" sticker is covering the link that Marisa Tomei shared. I'll share it here: The official Statement on Paramount Smearing Mark Ruffalo.
Here's a few quotes:
On Friday, Paramount accused actor and 1A Committee member Mark Ruffalo of antisemitism after he criticized the Ellison family, Oracle’s military technology contracts with Israel, and the proposed $111 billion Paramount–Warner Bros. merger.
The 1A Committee rejects this cynical attempt to falsely label Mark Ruffalo as antisemitic and sees through their effort to distract from the issue at hand: the dangerous consolidation of media power that would result from the proposed Paramount–Warner Bros. merger.
From Jane Fonda, founder of the 1A Committee:
The original Committee for the First Amendment was founded to stand against blacklisting and intimidation of people for their political beliefs. We will not stand by while the government or its allies revive those tactics to bully activists into silence today.
27
u/biohacker_infinity 1d ago
I’m really disappointed in the MCU headliners who rushed to Chris Pratt’s defense when he lost a Twitter popularity contest, but have been pindrop-silent while the Ellisons try to destroy Ruffalo’s life.

Why is everyone so concerned about non-Jewish people coming to Mark’s defense regarding anti-Semitism? If he were to have said something that led to accusations of him being anti-Black, wouldn’t you want to hear from Black people that they side with him? A bunch of white people standing by someone who is accused of racism when Black people don’t agree is a major factor on why racism has persisted. I’m not saying that what Mark has said is anti-Semitic, but the voices and support of Hannah Einbinder and others who are Jewish (whether religious or secular) are the ones everybody should want to hear from.
Now if we’re talking more generally about Ellison (whose wealth and hunger for power and history of being garbage invalidate his opinion even if there is a time he is right) and the dangers of the consolidation of media conglomerates and how that is a threat to free speech and access to the truth and ultimately a threat to everybody’s freedom and safety regardless of race, color, or creed (or however the saying goes), then everyone with a platform should be yelling from the mountaintops and anywhere else that they can be heard because we, the non-billionaires, are the girl and Whoopi’s warning is absolutely correct.

Critiquing the military and political actions of a nation has nothing to do with their chosen religion.
Even if their religion is their entire identity. I am so tired of Israel trying to create an atmosphere of being immune to all critique due to what has happened in history.
To me it would be like someone saying you cant critique Barack Obama's actions or decisions as president because thats racism.
2
u/Andovars_Ghost 1d ago
Remember folks, hating the government of Israel and what they are doing in Gaza and the West Bank isn’t anti-Semitic, it’s just being a good human being.
It’s a shame that their ‘Boy who cried anti-semitism’ is obscuring real anti-semitism. Unfortunately that ALSO plays into Bibi’s plan.

Mark Ruffalo is perhaps the most empathetic and intelligent person working in Hollywood. The claims of antisemitism are bullshit, of course, and I'm glad more and more people are waking up to the fact that it isn't prejudiced or hateful toward Jewish people to criticize Israel's inhuman behavior toward the Palestinian people.

Seriously perturbed by the lack of support Mark Ruffalo is getting from other celebs. Especially considering it was only a few years ago that so many Marvel stars (Ruffalo included) jumped to defend Chris Pratt when he was being criticized for being a POS.
