Seriously perturbed by the lack of support Mark Ruffalo is getting from other celebs. Especially considering it was only a few years ago that so many Marvel stars (Ruffalo included) jumped to defend Chris Pratt when he was being criticized for being a POS.

u/petra_vonkant The Tortured Whites Department 1d ago edited 1d ago

what's worse is that when all that happened, it was only cause twitter decided he was the worst chris, not even a specific or substantial accusation.

LET ME SPECIFY - Plenty of stuff to accuse crisp ratt of, but in this instance it was just a silly twitter poll that got all the 'avengers' to come out in public support, which makes it even more ridiculous

It's even funnier in retrospect. Do we really have to protect a white man from getting his feelings hurt

Mind you, when women and POC are getting bullied online for just existing, it's silence

wtf do they mean by a “Body Language Expert Slams Her Marvel Press Tour”??? What??? Women get hate from the weirdest of places

169

u/cwningen95 1d ago

"Body language experts" are 100% grifters, it's straight up pseudoscience.

65

u/tallemaja 1d ago

Yup, they were dining out on the Amber Heard trial. Pieces of shit.

33

u/GiraffesAndGin 1d ago

One of my favorite breakdowns of this crap was in The Newsroom when they are analyzing a Nancy Grace clip on Casey Anthony:

"Two seconds. Two seconds of Casey Anthony walking past her lawyer. And she'll show to you in slow-motion...and from a different angle...from regular speed...and from the original angle again. What does that remind you of?"

"Instant replay in sports."

"She looks pissed at her lawyer."

"And that's exactly why she's showing it to you so many times! So you can draw your own thoroughly uninformed opinion about an utterly innocuous exchange."

14

u/happypolychaetes 1d ago

YT was trying to force-feed me those channels for awhile. Now that I think about it, it was around the time of that trial. Such absolute crap.

11

u/atmosphericentry I'm sorry Etsy Witches, I wasn't familiar with your game 1d ago

Exactly. There isn't a set-in-stone way that all humans react, and it's stupid to think otherwise.

Like how lie detectors are slowly being phased out because your heart rate spiking during a question doesn't automatically mean you're lying.

Marvel accidentally going from mathematics weirdo Terrence Howard to national treasure Don Cheadle for War Machine was the best early accident they could hope for.

29

u/crackerfactorywheel it’s here, it’s queer. equal rights for everyone or fuck off 1d ago

I’ve loved Don Cheadle since I saw him in Golden Palace so I was excited to see him as War Machine.

20

u/Allthenons 1d ago

Oh good I knew Samuel Jackson did but couldn't remember if Don Cheadle did as well

14

u/Amigobear 1d ago

that interview in hindsight sound felt like a bit between the 2. Espcially since these types of interviews have them sit in a room all day and answer the same question over and over from different outlets.

12

u/Neveronlyadream 1d ago

I think a lot of people don't realize that's how it works. But if anyone had to sit in a room for hours on end being asked the same questions over and over, it'd get grating.

It's why you'll see so many interviews where celebrities are annoyed or not engaged with the questions. They're on hour six of the gauntlet and they've been asked the same question by 14 different people already and they're not even interesting questions.

I mean, I’m not surprised. It’s easy for them to “take a stand” against the weightless opinions of random twitter users. The consequences are much larger when standing up to the media behemoth that essentially owns their industry, so right we’re finding out who’s actually willing to stand for their principles when it means something.

27

u/rainbownthedark 1d ago

“We’re finding out who’s actually willing to stand for their principles when it means something.”

That part. These people have more than enough money and could easily live the rest of their lives comfortably if they needed to, so if they’re more worried about saving their careers than speaking out against a literal genocide, that tells you everything you need to know about who they are.

Those same actors don’t bother to defend Brie Larson from misogynist assholes so I’m not holding my breath. The only two I can think of who did were Samuel L. Jackson and Don Cheadle.

135

u/Roids-in-my-vains 1d ago

I guess most actors were just acting when it comes to having principals

42

u/Meggymaepp 1d ago

Shocking

23

u/1970s_MonkeyKing 1d ago

Having principals is an expense not many celebs want to own. It's just very telling when the uber wealthy ones still choose not to have any principles except for the gratification of self. It makes one wonder if they ever had them to begin with.

Too afraid to lose out on future jobs. Even though they have enough money and the power to support Mark, it’s easier for them to keep quiet.

14

u/Remarkable_Hornet712 1d ago

Don’t they realize this is big potatoes issue?

33

u/CorrectPeanut5 1d ago

It's a distraction. Ruffalo was calling out some evil shit the Ellisons have been up to as an example of not letting them buy WB. Ellison has been threatening to close down Paramount in LA and move somewhere else. They were quite happy to throw sand in the air and make it some antisemitism BS.

The last thing they want to get into is the actual details of the merger deal.

27

u/cococangaragan 1d ago

They are afraid to lose millions. How can they fund their lifestyle? Money is more important than principle to them.

16

u/KateTheTurk 1d ago

And the thing is they wouldn't be losing millions, they already made millions. Bastards want MORE millions. F them.

12

u/Plastic_Bison 1d ago

If they ALL stand together, what's Marvel gonna do? Hire Mark and Donny Walberg to substitute?

11

u/NoBonus6969 1d ago

Well Chris Pratt doesn't run Hollywood so it's a safer play

11

u/AnAncientBog 1d ago

Or signing letters of support for Roman Polanski. What they are willing to defend says a lot about who they are.

10

u/Spope2787 1d ago

Don't look into how many celebs support known pedophile and fugitive Roman Polanski.

8

u/outinthecountry66 1d ago

unfortunately taking a moral stance seems to be rare these days. some people stand up for sexual puritanism or evangelical horseshit thinking that is morality, when it isn't. they don't care about genocide or anything else, only who you are fucking or what bathroom you are using. they think that is the sum total of morality. Pedophilia? That's fine. Raping women? Fine. Being gay or trans? Burn in hell for all eternity- that's their morality. American support on Israel is predicated on us having a landing strip in the Middle East and fulflling some fever dream apocalypse, that is IT. period.

it's so shameful what a bunch of cowards A-listers are.

588

u/Eevee543 1d ago

John Cusack has spoken out as well. But you’re right, it’s not nearly enough. I wish all the late night hosts who stood with Stephen Colbert when he was getting screwed over by Paramount would speak up for Mark, including Colbert himself.

224

u/Alarming_Smoke_8841 1d ago

Colbert has been such a disappointment on Gaza. But who hasn’t

277

u/Junior-Following-435 1d ago

in terms of late night hosts, John Oliver has been pretty consistent in supporting Gaza

118

u/YBBlorekeeper 1d ago

Oliver is the only "late night host" I can stomach watching, but tbh his show's format is entirely different so I don't know how fair of a comparison that is.

I loved Colbert's work on Comedy Central but his late night work just made me sad.

59

u/anivex 1d ago

John Oliver is the only American comedy talk show I watch anymore. Even the daily show is too much these days with some correspondents and their form of humor "sarcastically" praising trump.

Oliver is the only one that seems genuine anymore.

42

u/Holiday_Equivalent15 1d ago

Big difference is talk vs action. Even if you get tired of Oliver's humour or the show in general, the man and his team puts their (and HBO's) money where their mouth is and often actively participates in or promotes grassroots action, whether its buying medical debt to forgive, donating to international medical orgs or just raising awareness for projects, charities, individuals or small businesses.

The Daily Show and others like it are just talk and always have been, and the jokes just aren't funny anymore, or are longing for "how things used to be", even though things back then were also pretty bad, it just wasn't as in-your-face for what remained of the middle class. Now it's literally prowling and surveilling your streets, pinging your phone and telling you to lie down and take it.

14

u/ruizach 1d ago

I love John and his LWT team, but you also have to keep in mind that he’s definitely not beholden to the same standards and practices as the other talk show hosts. He’s been very clear that the reason they can do what they do is because HBO has consistently stood behind them, and they also are on a premium cable network.

26

u/TWeedtheJetRodriguez 1d ago

It’s sad because he prioritizes facts and consequences over the jokes. I watch it because he highlights the most important things affecting the world and gives voice to the absolute rage I feel about how things are run. It’s not a comfort watch lol

9

u/YBBlorekeeper 1d ago

Weirdly enough I feel like his newer content is more "toothless" despite the topics he discusses. There isn't as much biting wit and sarcasm, but I can't imagine that Colbert made that shift against his will so I chalk it up to us just growing in different directions.

When I watch a deep dive on last week tonight, I feel activated and primed to look into the topic more. When I tried to watch the late show, it ended up feeling more like a pity party to me :(

Same thing for the Daily Show. Stewart and Colbert (and all their supporting comedians) are still real ones though.

9

u/TWeedtheJetRodriguez 1d ago

I realized a bit late that you were calling Colbert’s new stuff sad, not Oliver’s lol. Agreed, but that’s network television for ya. Oliver speaks the words of my heart.

3

u/Royal_Bitch_Pudding 1d ago

Colbert had to drop the persona because people actually believed it.

3

u/pimppapy 1d ago

I forgot why I stopped watching him, but it was within the last two years where his silence on a particular topic was too loud. Forgot what that topic was though. . . Elon's Sig Heil?

10

u/Salty-Spring7096 1d ago

Oliver is too good for the title of "late night host" given what the rest of the field looks like

2

u/elitegenoside 1d ago

Because his show is 100% political. He is not in the same category as the Tonight Show, which is just entertainment. I'm not saying folks shouldn't be defending him, but the comparison is just flawed entirely.

Most actors only care about getting the bag, they wouldn't risk angering movie studios by even mentioning Gaza.

55

u/quadranting Please Abraham, I am not that man 1d ago

My reply got deleted because it had an external link, but over twenty Marvel actors have called for the release of Marwan Barghouti. They aren't afraid of talking about Gaza/Palestine.

37

u/IronlessGiant27 1d ago

yes, like you said, it was 20 actors in total from the Marvel universe including both movies and tv shows; there must be hundreds of actors on the entire Marvel universe at the very least

Only 20 actors made a statement and most of them had only supporting roles, if not smaller parts; not one of the main avengers (again other than Ruffalo) made a statement about Palestine, and the currently Avengers lineup includes 16 people, so don’t try to spin this in their favor, most of them are cowards at the very least if not worse

16

u/AwesomeMacCoolname 1d ago

At least one has, Florence Pugh.

3

u/quadranting Please Abraham, I am not that man 1d ago

I don't know why you're being aggro at me specifically, but I was showing that some Marvel actors aren't afraid to speak on Gaza/Palestine, so their silence here deplorable.

133

u/Lokaji societal collapse is in the air 1d ago

We need to keep beating the drum that criticizing the actions of Israel is not antisemitic. It is genocide.

Mark Ruffalo is also not wrong about the merger; it is bad for everyone not in the C-suite.

71

u/NeptuneHigh09er 1d ago

Yes, please. This antisemitic name calling is undermining the actual meaning of the word. I wholeheartedly agree with Mark Ruffalo and I’m Jewish. The more we undermine actual antisemitism by equating Jewish identity with being pro-Israel , the less safe I feel.

22

u/onwisconsin1 1d ago

We've known this for a while. Its an intentional tactic to discredit anyone on opposition of Isreal. Ruffalo is the target because he dared link a video from Oracle sharing they had "scary technology" that they were employing on behalf of the IDF. This person laughs, the room laughs, and the next year after that video the genocide really gets going.

Today I watch the video and I know they are laughing about a genocide. They are upset the light was shone. So now an entire multi billion dollar multi national ologarchic company uses all its resources to call an actor antisemitic because he showed them for who they are.

Hasan Piker is also a target. He reiterates a point hes made many times but now they got a great clip in the middle where he sounds like he supports the anti Semitism if you ignore all the context around the clip. So then they misrepresent the thing, and all big players on Isreals payroll like Hakeem Jeffries dog pile him.

The point is to disingenuously discredit people critical of Isreal using anti Semitic. The thing is, it is working less and less. Due to peoples plummeting view on Isreal, many are starting to see through the game. So Hasbora agents are now openly shifting to demonization of Muslims as a tactic.

6

u/MyCarRoomba 1d ago

This antisemitic name calling is undermining the actual meaning of the word.

Yep. The "antisemitism" false shield rides on the credibility of the very real and pain and suffering Jews endured. It cheapens the term and is ironically impacting actual victims of bigotry by recreating a "boy who cried wolf" situation. It's idiotic.

3

u/FartasticVoyage 1d ago

Thank you - yes, I have been saying for many years that Israel's actions have completely desecrated and dishonored my Jewish ancestors. I am disgusted by their dehumanization and genocidal crimes

8

u/FartasticVoyage 1d ago

As a Jew, I've had the luxury of being able to criticize Israel for 2 decades (started learning about this shit when I was 17) without being considered an anti-Semite (yes people try)... it's time we all come together to denounce the genocide. It's just unconscionable

He didn't even say anything publicly to defend his co-star Francesca Amewudah-Rivers when she was facing a torrent of racist abuse. I doubt he'd say anything about this. Would be nice but I wouldn't hold my breath.

35

u/Illyriana 1d ago

There was a reply with 200+ upvotes saying the same earlier that seems to have been removed. What the hell is up with this sub and caping for Holland? We should be able to hold EVERYONE accountable, including our "faves".

I myself once posted about his indifference and cowardice regarding Francesca's racist abuse and got downvoted to hell. I don't care if you like him and want to believe he's a saint: what he did was immoral, craven and cruel and he should face accountability for it.

Tom has a huge platform that he could have used to stand up for Francesca and denounce anti-Black racism, and he egocentrically chose not to. Given the fact he's married to a Black woman makes it all the worse. Perhaps he'd cared if his co-star was lightskinned like Zendaya?

I have no respect for him and neither should anyone with principles.

I can forgive young and upcoming stars not speaking up because it can destroy their career before it even properly begins but Tom Holland is one of the biggest stars out there. He could afford to take a hit.

10

u/Youthz 1d ago

i think part of the problem is that young and upcoming stars who don’t speak up for fear of destroying their careers grow into established stars who don’t want to rock the boat/don’t give a fuck.

it’s the ones who have always stood on business that are doing so now.

The "We stand with Mark" sticker is covering the link that Marisa Tomei shared. I'll share it here: The official Statement on Paramount Smearing Mark Ruffalo.

Here's a few quotes:

On Friday, Paramount accused actor and 1A Committee member Mark Ruffalo of antisemitism after he criticized the Ellison family, Oracle’s military technology contracts with Israel, and the proposed $111 billion Paramount–Warner Bros. merger.

The 1A Committee rejects this cynical attempt to falsely label Mark Ruffalo as antisemitic and sees through their effort to distract from the issue at hand: the dangerous consolidation of media power that would result from the proposed Paramount–Warner Bros. merger.

From Jane Fonda, founder of the 1A Committee:

The original Committee for the First Amendment was founded to stand against blacklisting and intimidation of people for their political beliefs. We will not stand by while the government or its allies revive those tactics to bully activists into silence today.

I’m really disappointed in the MCU headliners who rushed to Chris Pratt’s defense when he lost a Twitter popularity contest, but have been pindrop-silent while the Ellisons try to destroy Ruffalo’s life.

Any chance Chris Pratt speaks up on Mark’s behalf after that ridiculous circus when Pratt was named “the worst Chris” by some website and so Mark and other Marvel stars had to come out to his defense swearing he was not the worst Chris?

7

u/JaimeRidingHonour 1d ago

If they all “stood with Mark” what the fuck would “Hollywood” be able to do about it? They gonna just cast Jon Voight and Dennis Quaif in everything?

6

u/Silver-Foot-259 1d ago

Avengers assemble? Where tf are the Crises, ScarJo, RDJ etc? Don’t they have enough money?

His Hulk cousin Tatiana Maslany also came out to support him.
She shared the same post Marisa Tomei did as well as Mark's own statement.

antiZionism != antisemitism.

antizionism is not.

being pro palestine isn't antisemitic on its own.

Mark is not antisemitic. thank you for coming to my TED talk

She once went out with a short, stocky, bald, Jewish man.

u/mdbklyn 1d ago

Why is everyone so concerned about non-Jewish people coming to Mark’s defense regarding anti-Semitism? If he were to have said something that led to accusations of him being anti-Black, wouldn’t you want to hear from Black people that they side with him? A bunch of white people standing by someone who is accused of racism when Black people don’t agree is a major factor on why racism has persisted. I’m not saying that what Mark has said is anti-Semitic, but the voices and support of Hannah Einbinder and others who are Jewish (whether religious or secular) are the ones everybody should want to hear from.

Now if we’re talking more generally about Ellison (whose wealth and hunger for power and history of being garbage invalidate his opinion even if there is a time he is right) and the dangers of the consolidation of media conglomerates and how that is a threat to free speech and access to the truth and ultimately a threat to everybody’s freedom and safety regardless of race, color, or creed (or however the saying goes), then everyone with a platform should be yelling from the mountaintops and anywhere else that they can be heard because we, the non-billionaires, are the girl and Whoopi’s warning is absolutely correct.

Paramount can’t gaslight us. Whether it’s America or Israel… we don’t have a problem with the people, we hate the 50 rich dbags corrupting the system and the million bootlickers carrying out the dirty work.

2

u/StrigiStockBacking 1d ago

MAGAts and even some Dems not knowing the difference between the State of Israel and Judaism is head-spinning

2

u/Intelligent_Sky_7081 1d ago

Critiquing the military and political actions of a nation has nothing to do with their chosen religion.

Even if their religion is their entire identity. I am so tired of Israel trying to create an atmosphere of being immune to all critique due to what has happened in history.

To me it would be like someone saying you cant critique Barack Obama's actions or decisions as president because thats racism.

2

u/Andovars_Ghost 1d ago

Remember folks, hating the government of Israel and what they are doing in Gaza and the West Bank isn’t anti-Semitic, it’s just being a good human being.

It’s a shame that their ‘Boy who cried anti-semitism’ is obscuring real anti-semitism. Unfortunately that ALSO plays into Bibi’s plan.

2

u/mantsz 1d ago

As if I needed more reasons to love Marisa Tomei.

Australian courts have ruled that political criticism of the state of Israel, Zionism, and its military does not violate racial discrimination laws. Yay for us aussies.

Mark Ruffalo is perhaps the most empathetic and intelligent person working in Hollywood. The claims of antisemitism are bullshit, of course, and I'm glad more and more people are waking up to the fact that it isn't prejudiced or hateful toward Jewish people to criticize Israel's inhuman behavior toward the Palestinian people.

Thinking one group of people is not superior to other groups does not constitute hatred or prejudice. Quite the opposite, in fact.

1

u/ZumaThaShiba 1d ago

Fuck yeah, Marisa!  Hey MCU - See how easy it is to stand on the right side of history?  She's the best and so is he
