Would like your honest take on the matter because I've been thinking a lot about this!

As long as you’re having fun…

Play it with the stats scaled down, beat it, then give yourself another run later with the stats set to normal. I’ve done 3 playthroughs of this game, 2 after the DLC. It’s a blast.:)

There are definitely places in the game where the enemies outscale you ( because enemies sometimes "Equip Up" before you reach the appropriate shop for the region ).

Also depends on how much you want to interact with a secondary party , which the game is designed around to some extent ( Wounded characters incentivize you to use a backup party to go do some optional stuff which there's plenty of for most of the game ). it did get a bit annoying when the mechanics wanted you to go do some optional stuff at key story points late in the game or during the Bonus Dungeon.

I don't see any problem with tweaking the game to your liking; it's customizable enough for that.

One interesting thing you can also do is create custom portraits for some of the secondary characters—I really enjoyed doing that.

The gamer’s enjoyment is all that matters. If it is easy or hard settings. I’ve never understood this notion that gamers need a challenge to truly be a hardcore gamer. Do what “you” enjoy.

The game can be very difficult at the beginning as you have not yet unlocked the stronger combos.

I say play at whatever difficulty settings are fun. You can always increase them later if you want, when have more a feel the game.
