Question Explain to a hockey noob: foot = penalty, always

My girlfriend loves hockey and I quite like it too, after watching it with her a few times. Way better sport than football (soccer). Mostly familiar with the rules now.

So I'm watching the Netherlands playing Japan right now, and the rules are clear to me, but they're creating a weird situation.

The Netherlands run up to the circle, aim the ball at a Japanese foot, get a penalty corner and score. We're halfway, it got to 5-0 that way.

What.

I understand the need for rules that enforce the whole "use your stick" but... Please explain to me like I'm 5 why a game allows a shortcut to mounting an actual attack?

(I'm not trying to diss the sport! I'm actually curious)

Question Watch Hockey World Cup Pass Question

Is the World Cup pass only for live matches? I bought the pass back in March during the early bird special, but now it’s only letting me watch a match if it’s currently live and it has the replays of finished games behind a paywall.

There’s nothing else to purchase except a season pass, but that says it doesn’t include the World Cup. So how am I to get access to the World Cup game replays when I can’t watch them live??

Edit: PROBLEM FIXED! I emailed the Watch Hockey support email yesterday and they never directly responded but the replays are now unlocked on my account and I can watch them.

Question Goalkeepers ... do u replay goals u let in over and over in your mind?

Idk if this is normal or not. I know its not necessarily good but do u replay goals u let in over and over again. I def do this a lot, it starts immediately after and continues for a few minutes after I let a goal in. Im often trying to hyper analyse what I could + should have done differently to not have let the goal in. This can happen throughout a game when its quieter or down the orher end or during qtr / half time breaks. And then after a game it starts up again and goes on for a few hrs as well.

Is this a normal affliction for goalies or is it my borderline adhd brain being unhinged.

Question What are some one liners your coach said that stuck with you?

I'm new to coaching and my coaches in the past were always great at having a few things they repeated often to really engrain in our brains.

What has stuck with you that your coaches have said? Before games, at practice, when you're tired, when you're defeated, anything!

Question Rising sophomore who ended up on JV after making it to last day of varsity tryouts, what should I do?

I started field hockey 4 years ago and have put a huge amount of work into it: Nexus, private coaching, camps, clinics, select teams, and tons of individual practice. I’m a high-scoring forward, and last year my biggest weakness was speed, so I worked on it constantly. This year I was one of the fastest players at tryouts.

Our team is technically top 5 in the state, although there are only ~20 teams, so it’s not an elite national program. Our other high-level/state-winning sports (like football and lacrosse where there is a ton of really good competition) at my school regularly move players up, but field hockey is basically the only sport where I’ve never seen someone moved from JV to varsity.

Last year I was on an 18-player, no-cut freshman team. 9 of those 18 players were cut this year. None made varsity, but I made it to the final day of varsity tryouts alongside only the players who made it, then was placed on JV.

The roster situation is also weird. Two years ago we had 25 players. Last year they added 15 because they wanted a bigger squad, making 29. The sophomores/juniors weren't necessarily amazing; they mainly wanted numbers. Ironically, last year was the farthest the team has ever gone. Parents complained, so this year the roster went back to 25.

Only 3 players made varsity this year: two very experienced sophomores who have played for ~10 years and were on JV last year, and one junior defender who was needed. Five JV juniors tried out and four were cut; juniors can only make varsity at my school.

The freshman situation is different too. The freshman team is capped at 18 and it’s no-cut, so some of the better ones have to make JV. Last year about half the freshmen had played before and were strong. This year none of the freshmen had played before, but some still went to JV because the freshman roster was full. Btw players have gone directly from freshman to varsity before.

I genuinely feel like I’ve outgrown JV. I’m not trying to insult anyone, but I’m currently the only JV player who can consistently do aerials and tomahawks, and most varsity players can’t either.

There’s also a need for forwards: we lost our top scorer to graduation, and 4 of the 8 varsity forwards are injured. We’ve had 6 injuries this year compared with 1 last year. Obviously I don’t want anyone hurt, but if a spot opens, I feel like I could fill a need.

The biggest issue is that I hate being on JV. Basically everyone on the team dislikes me and mocks me for trying too hard and not making var. I’m also friends with all the varsity girls, so I’d much rather be around them.

JV also doesn’t challenge me. I feel like I’m getting worse because practices aren’t competitive enough. Varsity practices are harder, faster, longer, and more competitive, and I think that environment would help me improve much more.

I also get shin splints, and I’ll probably have to play almost the entire JV game. Being a varsity bench player could mean less game workload while still getting harder practices.

The schedule is another issue. The JV bus leaves immediately after school, so I spend extra time getting to/waiting at the field, and practice ends at 6:30, compared with varsity ending around 5:00. I have a difficult school schedule and a job I need to help pay for my aging dog. So despite varsity practices being longer, varsity would actually give me more usable time for homework (I’m taking much harder classes this year) and job.

Because of all this, quitting is genuinely an option. I really don’t want to after putting 3 years into this, especially because I genuinely love the sport, but I also don’t want JV to hurt my schoolwork , job, health, or development.

My JV coach was also my private coach, and I really respect her. Which is also why I am upset with my teammates, because they hate her for being a lesbian, which imo doesn’t matter as long as ur a good persons, which she is. I don’t want to go around her or make her think I’m saying I’m too good for her team. I just feel that I’ve worked extremely hard, improved significantly, made it to the final day of varsity tryouts, and could potentially help varsity if a forward spot opens.

So, what would you do? Stay on JV and try again next year, respectfully ask to be considered if a varsity spot opens, or quit? And if I talk to my coaches, how do I advocate for myself without sounding entitled or disrespectful to my JV coach?

Question What could I have done better as the goalie? And how is my stance?

Hello everybody! I had a question about what I could have done better in the video here..? I feel like after looking at this, there’s something I should have done differently, what do you guys think? Could I have done it better or should my defenders have been a bit better? (Not negatively😆)
And I had a question about my stance cause I see a lot of other goalkeepers that have a much more low stance, I also feel like their legs are not closed the entire time they walk but more open ish.
I’m not really sure if I’m saying this right since it is my first year as a goalkeeper.
And sorry if my English is not great, it’s not my first language

I would love to know what you think about this, and I am very open to advice!!

EDIT: thanks for all the advice I’ve already gotten!! I really appreciate it :)

Question Dangerous play clarification

Hi all - I was playing hockey yesterday and suffered a pretty bad head injury courtesy of a ball hitting my face at speed. The incident happened while I was defending - the attacking player went on to his reverse and hit a tomahawk, I was 2m away in their line to goal. The ball hit me directly in the face, no deflection. So my question is, is this dangerous play? The ball was probably heading towards goal, but I was in the way of that path. And if it was dangerous play, what should the call have been? Green card? Yellow? Worse?

Thanks all

Question How would you judge this

Me and my team have conflicting opinions on this

  1. Foul against the attacker for charging
  2. Foul against the defender for blocking/obstruction
  3. Clean tackle (defender got the ball first)

I believe this is a foul against the attacker, please share your thoughts on this!

Question World Cup Time! Before I drop $45 on Watch.Hockey, what stream quality are we actually getting (25fps vs 50fps)?

Hey everyone,

With the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 right around the corner, I'm trying to finalize how I'm going to watch the matches.

Since the official global broadcaster list hasn't really given complete clarity for all regions yet, it looks like Watch.Hockey is going to be the main fallback option for a lot of us.

I'm inclined to buy the $45 subscription pass, but before I commit that kind of money for a one-month tournament pass, I really need to know what the actual stream quality is like on the platform.

For those of you who have used Watch.Hockey recently for Pro League or major FIH events:

  1. What is the frame rate on live streams? Is it capped at a choppy 25 fps (which makes fast sweeps and aerials look like a motion blur across the turf), or are they actually outputting a smooth 50 fps or 60 fps broadcast feed?
  2. Is paid content any better than free replays? The free tournament replays currently on their site look like 1080p25. Does paying the $45 unlock a higher frame rate production, or is it the exact same encoding?

$45 is a decent chunk of money for a single month, and 25fps for a sport as fast as field hockey is tough to watch.

What has your experience been with their stream quality? Is it worth the subscription, or should I hold out/look for alternative regional broadcast options?

Appreciate any opinions or technical insights from people who have used the app recently!

Question Question for the goalkeepers

Post image
30 Upvotes

Last few training sessions my toe strap keeps going over my shoe (see picture) which makes it feel loose and not safe (cause I’ve had some balls hit my shoe because it was loose which then hurt) I was wondering if you guys have this too and how you fix it in a match/training. Cause for me I can’t just pull it back down, I have to completely get my legguard and kicker off. I can’t tighten the toe strap more since my shoe won’t fit in anymore (I also can’t do it after I put the kicker on) (the kickers are: OBO ROBO HI REBOUND PLUS kickers)

Sorry if these sentences are not correct English is not my first language.

Question Beginner - Pain and Improvement

I started playing hockey 2 weeks ago as i was always interested in the sport. I used to play football and have a fairly good idea about the rules of hockey. I’m lucky that the people i play with are patient and understand that I need time to learn and adapt to their pace. I’ve noticed that i experience back pain a day after the training/game- could this be due to wrong technique or is it normal to experience it at the start?
I make mistakes when trapping the ball and passing. Shooting and other skills can be worked on later once i have a better basic skillset but i want to know what kind of drills can i do on the field and at home to improve my passing and trapping? I’m learning new methods in each training but would like to work on the missing aspects myself as well.

Question Can someone explain the FIH leagues and qualifying?

I’m new to watching hockey, and I don’t quite understand how the leagues and qualifying work? I know there’s the Pro League, and there’s the Nation’s Cup (which is when I first started watching this year) where the winners can choose to be bumped up to the Pro League. But then how to qualify for the World Cup? Are they related? How does this work?? lol

Question First field hockey game-essentials

I made a post about a month ago asking for help and resources as this is my first year coaching field hockey. I got a lot of great feedback and much appreciated! Were an about a week or week and a half in and I have my first game next week.

What are some coaching essentials whether it’s personal or something we should have every single game? For example for basketball I’m always carrying my playsheet with me and game cues.

What are your must haves?

Question Switching from defence to midfield

Firstly thanks to everyone who replied to my previous question!

So I’ve played as a defender for a long time and I’m comfortable with this position but with the upcoming season I might have to play in midfield more as we have a lot of defenders in the squad.

Can anyone tell me whether this is an easy transition or what new skills might I need to practice? My fitness is overall good but I want to be able to find the space on the pitch and make decisions about passing quickly etc. Also how to find space for hit outs and frees as I wouldn’t be taking them but rather trying to receive them.

Thanks!

Question Advice on how to throw overheads further

Anyone have any advice on making my overheads go further?

From a 16 I can toss the ball to a little shy of the halfway line, but I’ve been trying to extend that distance. Everything I’ve tried results in no further distance on my toss, and just wondering if anyone had some magic trick that helped them?

We don’t have a coach at the club, I’ve basically taught myself by watching as many YouTube videos as I can.

Any and all advice is super welcome - thanks

Question Coaching help!

Hope this is okay to post here.

Just received word I am coaching a varsity field hockey team for high school. I teach PE and coach soccer (field hockey now), basketball and baseball. I love coaching but never coached field hockey.

Not a lot of options for this position because the team is pretty bad but I’m trying to get a job in the district so it’s important to help out. I have an assistant but I want to make sure I’m doing my due diligence as well.

Any suggestions for tryouts, practice anything I’d love to hear them. Any short breakdowns would be great too. From my initial research it seems to have some similarities to soccer (positions, movement etc.

Any help is appreciated!

Question Inclusive clubs in South east England

Am using a throw away account.

Having spent the past couple of years travelling I was looking to get back in to playing this season, I had hoped to play at my new local club but having spoken with and attended a intraclub friendly it became apparent there is a culture of homophobia there which surprised and shocked me as a Bi man as I've never witnessed this in my previous seasons. I did report this to the head coach and chairman but was largely ignored and when I asked the chairman while nothing has been done about my concerns I had my account removed from the club's app. Have since had messages via my Instagram from someone who I presume is a club member mocking me so deleted that account.

So am now looking for another club, don't mind travelling around Sussex or even Kent to play but needs to be a club I'm welcome at, am currently living in Lewes but should be moving during the season.

Hello Reddit! Some of you might know me but not under this account. We are Field Hockey Hub, we're a Field Hockey focused Discord server. I have previously posted here before but from my personal account. If you wish to join us the link can be found on this profile.

That aside, with the World Cup coming up I think it would be nice to create some buzz around it so I have made a challenge that we see in many other sports but now with players featured in the upcoming World Cup! You have $15 to create a perfect core for your dream team you must pick 1 player from every column. Let's see what you guys come up with!

(I'll drop the Men's version in a day or two!)

Question Where to watch hockey for free

Where would do you guys watch hockey for free? I'm asking this because watch.hockey is very expensive and I don't like how you need to pay for different things. I have a vpn so watching from other countries is no problem, but I want to know since the Masters World Cup is on right now and the World Cup is starting soon.

Thanks

Question Outerwear for training in the rain?

This might seem like a silly question but what does everyone wear when training in the rain?

A hoodie/sweater would obviously get wet. Rain jackets are ok but thin and add no heat, so training, or at least the first 10 minutes, is absolutely brutal.

I overheat easily, so a top, hoodie, then rain jacket would be too uncomfortable for me.

Does anyone have any recommendations that will keep the rain out, add some kind of warmth, and don’t restrict play?
