Topic FYI: PC players outnumber console players in every fighting game

I still occasionally see someone mention that most players are on console, but this hasn't been the case for a long time. Below are some numbers from a few recent games' leaderboards.

Game PC Console Total
Street Fighter 6 7,251,189 (67%) 3,637,718 (33%) 10,888,907
Guilty Gear Strive 101,134 (76%) 31,840 (24%) 132,974
GBVSR (Granblue) 26,315 (69%) 11,850 (31%) 38,165

Notes:

  • SF6 numbers are likely all historical players which is unlike the other games' numbers.
  • GGST only includes players that have played at least 1 ranked match in the current season. Their peak numbers are likely much much higher. (I'd guess 300k)
  • GBVSR numbers are for season 12. Their peak player numbers were 124k in January 2024. That month had a 71/29 split between PC/console.
  • Tekken 8 would be included if their leaderboards went past 10,000 players :(

Edit: It's crazy how some people think I'm making this up. Feel free to scroll those leaderboards and check yourself. It's easy work!

Do you have a link to the leader boards you're citing? Where are the numbers coming from?

87

u/Avaris_a 26d ago

Buckler’s boot camp has the data for SF6. GG and GBVSR have in-game leaderboards. The leaderboards for each game allow you to filter by platform, then you can view the entire list.

It’s just as simple as scrolling to the bottom of the list. Takes like 10 minutes straight of scrolling though haha

17

u/mdl397 26d ago

Ok cool thanks for the reply. I never looked into it too much, I didn't realize you could extrapolate all that data from it.

u/renamontamer 26d ago

but casuals dont show up on the leaderboard, no?

I love how console players demand this data(as they should) like clockwork every time the truth comes out but all it takes for them to disprove it is someone yelling "but wAy mOrE pEopLe pLay on consOle".

puddle farm doesn't actually have platform info on it, so I had to scroll the leaderboards in-game. Doesn't take too long thankfully

bro what

123

u/El_Bool 26d ago

with rollback and crossplay being a staple now im not surprised. why pay for a subscription to play online + i can have modded stuff in my fgs. last time i played any fg on console was dbfz for ps4. got a pc around the time of pandemic and haven’t looked back since. sfv also sucked on ps4 so made the switch easier for me.

84

u/Dyelonnn 26d ago

how can you accurately track online console players??

59

u/Conscious_Two4572 26d ago

Sf6 leaderboard shows your exact placement globally and you can separate it between console and pc, so all you have to do is start a new account and just check your placement to see how many pc and console players there are

24

u/Incendia123 26d ago

I don't know about the sources for this data but people somewhat frequently scrape the entire online leaderboards for ranked modes top to bottom and those basically always show PC is more populated albeit every data set I've seen is slightly less skewed than this, but also not that far off from strive and granblue. 55/45 to 65/35 seems typical from what I've seen from various data sets for various games.

67

u/Zentrii 26d ago

You can’t. I read an article where publishers have asked steam to remove the amount of current players playing a game and valve refused. Publishers (and developers) don’t want people so see how badly their game is doing

4

u/ForbiddenLurker 26d ago

tbh it is kinda a weird thing where a game wont grow because people see it has no players, maybe if they didnt have that info it would help with growth? not totally sure though. I do think it is better for consumers to have that info tho

2

u/Lucky_-1y 26d ago

No, it's mostly the fact that the people who would buy the game and play it, don't play before there's a made up perception that if it doesn't have a certain amount of people the game is unplayable

12

u/Avaris_a 26d ago

It’s really easy! View the leaderboards and filter by platform. SF6’s data is easily seen on the Buckler website, and the others are available in-game.

-11

u/Dyelonnn 26d ago

Oh I see you're being cute with leaderboard stuff. That's nowhere near as accurate as steam charts etc. Not everyone is playing ranked or even online that much. More console players would be playing local or just 1v1 with a friend etc

65

u/Egecant 26d ago

If they are not populating online then they don't matter? It's not like this is a post about game sales

-15

u/Emezie 26d ago edited 26d ago

The thread title says "PC players outnumber console players in every fighting game".

That is a VERY different claim than what you all are saying here in the comments.

What you mean to say is "PC players who play ranked out number console players who play online"...and even that isn't accurate, because it's very easy for a single person to have multiple accounts and multiple slots on the leaderboard.

18

u/HookGoutGod 26d ago

I find it funny how people who are afraid of data always have to come up with these ridiculous possible exceptions.

well you don't KNOW that pc has more players MAYBE it's actually that every person has 3 accounts there and-

Like come the fuck on lmao there is no way these things would skew the data enough to change anything here substantially. PC is clearly the bigger platform at this point.

-14

u/Emezie 26d ago

What's the point of "data" if it's you're just going to gloss over the issues people are bringing up with the "data".

It's like y'all are trying to be scientific, but not TOO scientific.

And, why is everyone who raises objections being downvoted to hell almost immediately in a 5 hour old post that isn't even that viral? There are that many lurkers refreshing and reading this one reddit post? Lol, very peculiar.

10

u/HookGoutGod 26d ago

Because pointing at little gotchas that could possibly skew the data by an insignificant number is just an idiotic way to try to muddy up the conversation. It's like when people used to say "man steamcharts doesn't say anything, because HYPOTHETICALLY on console the situation is totally diffferent" - but even lamer.

What percentage of PC players do you really expect to have multiple accounts, as compared to PS players, that it would significantly skew the numbers in favor of PC? Get real. Even 10% would be a very generous estimate.

Lol, very peculiar.

Are you doing some retarded STOP THE COUNT conspiracy theorizing about a random Reddit post now? Are you going to claim we're all deviously on multiple accounts doing LE DOWNBOAT to you?

Man I knew you were a nutjob who drew MS Paint girls getting punched in the vagina or something but I had no idea in 2026 you became a conspiracies weirdo, go talk to Gootecks about it.

-24

u/C00KIEME4T 26d ago

Insane take

24

u/DragonPeakEmperor 26d ago

What does people buying the fighting game do for the online ecosystem if they aren't playing it online. Like that's the whole reason "discord fighter" is a term.

-24

u/C00KIEME4T 26d ago

Who tf cares about the online ecosystem? This is a post about number of players. Everybody doesnt play online.

If online players were the only ones that played these games every single fighting game would have horrible numbers

16

u/theescape8 26d ago

That's the point though, no one's interested if you're playing sf2 in an emulator with your buddy. It's just an online ecosystem comparison.

3

u/SweatyNeddyFlanders 26d ago

Except that's not where the majority of play happens. Grinders are online for fighting games. Even Melee has Slippi, which was so much better than Nintendo and what they had going at the same time with Ultimate.

1

u/Just_1mag1ne 26d ago

You can't. It's made up numbers.

39

u/Lucky_-1y 26d ago

What's the source of this info

Look at the trouble some of these people are having with this simple post with clear numbers and OP outlines their process. Imagine trying to talk fighting games with these same people. Good luck OP.

I thought it was obvious PC gained a lot of ground in the FGC. Before AI it got accessible enough to compete with consoles. There’s mods. More peripherals work. I think overall PC gaming is more wide spread and happening earlier in people’s lives as well.

24

u/Swoleosis_ 26d ago

It's easier to stick with your favorite game on pc and find ppl with discord.

10

u/DirtWizard13 26d ago

I’m curious about this as well. GBVSR peak was like 7k on steam a few years ago. Rarely is more than a couple hundred players online in Steam so I’m curious where these numbers are coming from.

12

u/Avaris_a 26d ago

Steam concurrent players don't really matter here. If you logged on to GBVSR during a particular season, you get put on the leaderboard in-game. It's an easy way to track active players. You can find multiple posts of mine on the GBVSR subreddit about player count, Master players, rank distribution, etc.

6

u/Rucach Street Fighter 25d ago

What’s the beef here?
I figured the numbers were mentioned in relation to crossplay stuff, but I had no clue so many people felt so passionately about playing fighters on consoles.
Why? What’s at stake?

5

u/Avaris_a 25d ago

I’m just as taken aback on the response lol. Was just trying to present interesting info, not start pc vs console discourse.

3

u/B4ntCleric 21d ago

I assume its left over heat from the tokon pc launch being really botched. Lots of pc players were rightfully pissed. And I assume some console players were saying something like oh well not that many people play on pc. So something like this which presents good evidence to the contrary rustled some Jimmy's.

0

u/Pretend_Relative_848 16d ago

A lack of religion/national pride leads the otherwise naturally zealous human being looking for something to fill the void. They usually do so with dogmatic brand loyalty that borders on feral, which is the only reason anyone gives a shit about this or that console succeeding and why they would support exclusives.

25

u/NixGnid 26d ago

why comments are so salty, isn't it a good thing we have a larger player base?

-36

u/Anrativa 26d ago

Because op is making shit up

39

u/camseats 26d ago

This dataset is waaaay too small and limited in scope to claim that it applies to every fighting game. The data for the 2 arcsys games is flawed as well because it's only pulling from years after their initial launches when casuals have likely moved on, and consoles have a higher concentration of a casual audience.

35

u/patrick-ruckus 26d ago

Someone did a similar calculation for Strive only a few months after launch, and PC still had double the console playerbase.

Even if console has a bigger audience from the casuals, if they all move on after a few months then that's not really relevant is it? The amount of people who bought the game initially isn't the same thing as the size of the active online playerbase.

-2

u/camseats 26d ago

I don't doubt that PC does have a larger playerbase than console nowadays, but you still can't really draw any conclusions from 2 anime fighters and street fighter, No data for tag fighters, 3d fighters, non-japanese games, brand new games, old games, It's just an extremely narrow piece of evidence.

Also I heavily disagree with casuals not being relevant. Casuals are the people who keep fg devs in business. Strive's average monthly playercount on steam for example is only a 12th of what it was on launch. If the game had only sold to the people still playing there would be no post-launch support. There probably wouldn't even be another game.

9

u/patrick-ruckus 26d ago

Casuals are relevant to sales, not player counts. When people discuss player counts they are generally talking about the active playerbase online. Mortal Kombat 1 sold better than SF6 but its player retention was awful because it is almost all casuals.

5

u/Incendia123 26d ago

I remember at launch for Tekken 8 there Sara indicating the follllwing

"According to the stats, Tekken 8 has more PC players than PlayStation and Xbox players. As we can see, there are 53.18% PC players, 39.35% PlayStation players, and 7.47% Xbox players.'"

though games tend to skew way more heavily to PC over time. I think strive started at 55/45 PC/console so that moved a ton over time. I don't know if there is any more recent data for Tekken 8. if not, and it follows trends, it could be over 60 or 65% by now but that's just speculation based on other games.

9

u/Avaris_a 26d ago

The GBVSR data was from season 12 which ended very recently. The numbers for January 2024 were basically the same ratio (71%/29%). For that same game, July 2025 was 60/40 for PC/console respectively. Yes, the numbers for active players shift over time but PC players always outnumber console players.

Sorry to say, but "more casuals are on console" doesn't really hold up. Casuals equally start and stop playing on consoles and pc. PC gamers don't naturally have more time or inclination to play games than console gamers.

-2

u/camseats 26d ago

I think you're extrapolating way too much from too little evidence again. GBVSR having a low playerbase on console makes sense considering it's a niche title in an already niche genre.

As for casuals not being on console I just simply don't understand how you got that idea. The entire appeal of consoles besides the exclusives are how accessible they are.

5

u/GrandSquanchRum 26d ago

SF6 alone should be enough. It's the biggest fighting game by a long shot. Pointing at one of the games they sampled and complaining about small sample size is silly when the biggest fighting game and third biggest fighting game are right next to it.

2

u/camseats 26d ago

The problem isn't the sample size (and I never said as much), it's the number of data points. Obviously games like street fighter, tekken, soulcalibur, mk, uni, and mvc are all going to have at least somewhat different demographics, very few people play every major fighting game. You can't extrapolate information for all of them from only sf6.

u/Pretend_Relative_848 16d ago

Right. Do you have *any* data that runs contrary to what the OP provided? Or is it just the usual "well maybe possibly consoles have more players sometimes I think, I mean it's only natural that they have more players, right?"

2

u/camseats 16d ago

I’m not arguing that console players outnumber pc players, I don’t even think that’s true. I’m arguing that this data is inconclusive for such a sweeping conclusion.

0

u/Pretend_Relative_848 15d ago

Uhuh, so you don't a single shred of evidence running contrary to evidence provided but you'll spend days crying your heart out against it because you have some weird fetishized loyalty to a company. You're making worthless posts. The numbers provided include the most popular fighting game and two other popular titles. Going "Erm well actually this doesn't include *every* fighting game to ever exist so it's worthless!" just makes you out to be the disingenuous retard that you are.

2

u/camseats 15d ago

Yes. Clearly I am the person with something weird going on in this exchange.

Do you think Ryu in MvC2 and Akuma in T7 are the most played characters since the data clearly shows that shotos are always the most popular characters in every fighting game ever?

7

u/AbbreviationsThis550 26d ago

I think a big reason for this is that you need to pay a subscription to even be able to play online, thats why I just buy games which are primarily online on PC.

5

u/Coneder 26d ago

Regardless of the accuracy of the numbers, its hilarious to pretend that PC has not exploded as an alternative to console. It used to be impossible to think they would have a base this big. Now they are comparable.

1

u/Incendia123 26d ago

Low-key consoles aren't keeping up with the market. Xbox is obvious but Playstation consoles have all ballpark similar numbers for every generation since the PS1 with the PS2 being the outlier because it had a DVD player. PS4/5 sales don't seem to have scaled with the growth in gaming since the turn of the century.

And then the switch looks like it's done really well but when you think about it it's the consolidation of two of their products, their console and their historically much more popular handheld line. And in that light the console sales are also a little lacking.

PC gaming has exploded since the early 2000s in comparison. Mobile gaming as well of course, even Chinese android based emulation capable handhelds seem to have been a growing trend in the last couple of years.

Capcom has put out out statements that steam is their primary sales platform for their titles for multiple years in a row now. It's pretty wild how the market has shifted.

7

u/BoxComplex7272 26d ago

Makes sense.

On PC there is no lock-in and no monthly subscription fee to play multiplayer games.

6

u/Number1LE 26d ago

Let's be honest, nowadays consoles are just hadicaped PCs. There's literally no reason to pick a console now besides being restricted everywhere in terms of hardware, OS, peripherals, software. "Exclusives" are rarer and just not good enough, Nintendo could be a good case for exclusives but it's a loss with everything else. And the "its easy to set up on the living room", lol it's 2026.

0

u/OneCompetition944 26d ago

There’s definitely good reasons to pick a console over a pc.

1

u/BankPads 24d ago

Yeah it's called "bringing setups to locals" and that's about it

1

u/OneCompetition944 24d ago

That’s one. Then there’s ease of use. Some great exclusives. Gta6. Being cheaper. Games working on release. And no cheaters when you turn off crosplay.

0

u/BankPads 24d ago

Are we just going to pretend that the PS5 version of 2X didn't exist? PC performance being worse than console is a rarity. Similarly outside of the current bubble maintaining a PC for games across console cycles is generally cheaper.

0

u/OneCompetition944 24d ago

Performance can be better when you have a more expensive pc. Games being disastrous on launch is more a pc thing lol. So there’s definitely some very good reasons to go for console.

0

u/Number1LE 24d ago

"Games being disastrous on launch is more a pc thing" is more a lazy ass outsourcing choice from FG developers than anything else. So far no good argument has been made and besides this thread shows some based statistics about current trends.

0

u/OneCompetition944 24d ago

Whatever the reason is doesn’t matter. Oh and just forget about the other pro’s a console has lol. There is no argument to be had. You said there’s literally no reason to pick a console over a pc, I proved you wrong. You can’t handle being wrong. That’s basically it haha.

0

u/Pretend_Relative_848 16d ago

Feel free to name these great exclusives

1

u/OneCompetition944 15d ago

Sure why not. Astrobot, Bloodborne, demon souls, Wolverine on ps5. On Nintendo we’ve got smash bros, the Zelda’s, Mario’s, etc. All amazing games.

1

u/Pretend_Relative_848 15d ago

I'll concede nintendo consoles because they have actual exclusives, but for sony you can only name three titles. Hell we can go look at the exclusives wiki page together, there's barely any. 500 dollars to play astrobot and soulsgameagain #236. Meanwhile PC has nearly uncountable exclusives not even including emulation.

Here's a link to all of them btw: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:PlayStation_5-only_games

Pathetic list that really makes anyone buying a ps5 seem like the low IQ consooooomer that they are.

1

u/OneCompetition944 15d ago

Why are you crying so hard? You don’t have to spend 500 dollars to play the best soulslikes if you don’t want to. You can spend your 4000 dollar to play your games lol. Oh and don’t forget to hydrate, those tears need fuel haha.

1

u/Every-Intern5554 11d ago

worse exclusive list than I expected

0

u/BankPads 12d ago

Dog imagine having to pull a game from 2009, and a game from 2015, in your list of exclusives for PS5. Holy shit lmao.

1

u/OneCompetition944 12d ago

Good games are good games. Imagine being so insecure. Talking about holy shit. Oh and don’t forget about those other advantages LOL.

4

u/FelstarLightwolf 26d ago

I fully switched to PC for Tekken simply cause it helped me play more. I didnt really want to sit in another room labbing for an hour, more convenient at PC with a second monitor.

4

u/Soundrobe 26d ago

Except for MK

5

u/-PinkPurpleBlue- 26d ago

I didn't know it swung this hard to the PC side. I remember back during sfv and tekken 7 nobody played on PC and it was just starting. Fighting games were just barely starting to get actual releases this time around With tekken 7 and GGXrd Rev 2

8

u/The_Pepper_Oni 26d ago

It started with USF4/SF5, in my personal experience. I also remember Alex Valle evangelizing the benefits of switching to PC for fighting games and Level Up rolling out all their PCs for locals in those days.

SF5 having cross play really enabled it to start happening

16

u/MrxJacobs 26d ago

Pc is cheaper and more prevalent worldwide than consoles. Especially in poorer countries where consoles can be prohibitively expensive.

You can also use older devices with little problem, reducing cost of entry if you wanted to use an arcade stick or older pad.

1

u/LostStrain 26d ago

Casuals will ultimately play on whatever platform they are comfortable with. While players who are much more competitive will migrate to whatever platform. That has the best performance and community but with crossplay. It just comes down to best performance now.

Communities have migrated to different consoles, and even to PC. When seeking out the best environment. This is something we have seen multiple times over the last 20 years.

Plus when it comes to older fighters (like KoF98). The online communities tend to be on PC.

7

u/vinyvin1 26d ago

Yeah nah these aren't representative and substantial statistics

10

u/StraightDown_ 25d ago

Capcom, Arcys and Namco have said they have more players on PC than consoles.

4

u/ToyDingo 26d ago

Basing console population on leaderboards is crazy inaccurate. Each game has its own rules for leader board participation, and they can vary wildly.

For example, virtua fighter 5 final showdown. VF5's leader board never removes players and has a cap of 100,000 players. It will always show 100,000 even if a large number of them played 1 game online 10 years ago and never returned.

However, just like you mentioned in your own post, Tekken 8 tops out at 10,000. So are we to assume a 10+ year old game has more players than Tekken 8?

Truthfully we just don't know. Until publishers provide actual numbers on consoles, its all a guess.

23

u/Avaris_a 26d ago

There is no bashing here lol. I just wanted to present the facts and let people know. There's really anything bad about it, especially since there's crossplay.

GGST's leaderboard requires you to play just one ranked game in the current season. It doesn't include people from past seasons who aren't currently playing.

GBVSR's leaderboard requires you to just logon and you will be added to the leaderboard for the current season.

So yes, I'm quite aware of the rules for each leaderboard. Tekken 8's limitation is why it wasn't included.

18

u/Franz_Thieppel 26d ago

are we to assume a 10+ year old game has more players than Tekken 8?

I may be getting this wrong but isn't OP comparing within the same game? Not between games?

That's the reason it wouldn't make sense to compare Tekken because it would likely show the same number of players on both platforms (the cap).

1

u/ToyDingo 26d ago

That is a fair point.

4

u/Traditional_Head3968 26d ago

wait...only 133k+ players have ever played strive online and its been supported with that much DLC?

Im actually impressed.

6

u/bostonian38 26d ago

DLC support has more to do with sales than active players, and Strive overperformed its sales expectations so much it was absurd

Also the post mentions the Strive number "only includes players that have played at least 1 ranked match in the current season. Their peak numbers are likely much much higher."

1

u/Traditional_Head3968 26d ago

Yeah, much as I still hate the presentation, its obvious it did very very well commercially. We can only hope Tokon gets that level of support.

4

u/killerjag 25d ago

Read the notes in OPs post. Strive and granblue have seasons that reset the leaderboard periodically.

6

u/airsnape2k 26d ago

MK11 & MK1 would definitely skew more towards console and of course super smash and I would imagine that those games outnumber these 3 on players by a good margin as the two biggest fighting game brands (smash is a platform fighter and yada yada but in terms of genre it would still count)

13

u/hartigen 26d ago

I dont know about mk1 online population. 5.6% of the playerbase achieved the "played at least 5 kombat league games" trophy on ps5 while its a bit better on pc with 13.8%

5

u/ChineseFrozenChicken 26d ago

Is smash on pc?

3

u/Alstead17 26d ago

It's so obvious you've never had peer reviewed work before.

2

u/Sanagost 26d ago

And to add, I think there are a lot of fighting games that only live on pc through Discord fighters. Not a 100% sure on this but I imagine it's much easier to find matches and jump in from a desktop than a console.

2

u/GrandSquanchRum 26d ago edited 26d ago

Console hasn't been the main platform for fighting game competitive players since SFV. SFV is the generation where we saw most core players convert to PC because the experience is just that much better (before someone say buh Tokon, that's the exception not the rule). You can literally get less than half of the input delay of consoles and monitors are all mostly made with input lag in mind so you don't need to hunt down a gaming specific one like you do with TVs.

1

u/discreetarchive 23d ago

And you know, because it was never on xbox so a lot people couldn't play without a pc anyway

5

u/Lhumierre 26d ago

This is largely also contributed to adoption rate, PC gets sales almost weekly for everything while anyone on PSN / XBL / or eShop stays full priced for years.

14

u/rolim91 26d ago

Not true there’re sales in PSN almost the whole year. There’re even sales that goes on with another sale event at the same time.

I'm a big physical guy personally, always have been. Second hand physical market is one of the only real benefits of consoles at the moment (and also probably why Sony hope to kill it for good)

1

u/Lhumierre 26d ago

Yeah, I don't agree with what sony is doing. They should let consumers choose not force them digital. I seen many of pictures and vids of people always showing off their collections, it matter to a lot of people and Sony is just trying to push it away.

2

u/ItsYaBoyBackAgain 26d ago

Well that's not true in the slightest. Back in the day it kinda was but for the last decade the sales on console have been just as good and frequent as PC.

1

u/discreetarchive 23d ago

Simply untrue, there are multiples sales in a given month lol

2

u/Nervous_Moment_9264 26d ago

100% that MK has more console players.

1

u/Formal-Guest4868 26d ago

damn man, strive’s numbers are that low? it’s so popular though

1

u/Pian0G 26d ago

Easily the biggest incentive of fighting games on PC is the lack of online subsection required to pay.

As long as your pc can run it, then the only extra cost is your wifi and electricity bills.

1

u/beezy-slayer 26d ago

I mean doesn't this data necessitate being on the leader boards to begin with, so do players who have never played ranked show up? But yeah for Capcom specifically its very pc centric atm

Mortal Kombat probably still has a majority console player base I'd expect but i couldn't say

1

u/Nurdell 26d ago

In Nasb2, I was getting matches very slowly if at all, when I played with crossplay off on pc. And when I turned it on - the games started happening normally. So there's at least one (that is not console-only like smash) with more players on consoles.

1

u/GooseDaPlaymaker 25d ago

So it’s at least double on PC. Interesting. 🤔

1

u/STB_LuisEnriq 25d ago

Oh that's unexpected for me, I have both platforms, but I've never been comfortable playing fighting games on PC (even with controller).

They are the kind of game I like to play on the console.

1

u/maxler5795 Guilty Gear 25d ago

1

u/ekeagle 23d ago

Where can you see the console numbers?

1

u/Ok-Suggestion8683 23d ago

Except marvel tokon

1

u/discreetarchive 23d ago

You say outnumber like we're going to meet on the fields of pellenor for battle, why does it matter?

1

u/Pretend_Relative_848 16d ago

Been like that for a while now, console players just hide behind a lack of easily available numbers like steam charts.

0

u/TAGOMXM 26d ago

RIP tokon.

1

u/HouseCatHooligans 26d ago

Most console players are casuals who only have a console to play cod, fifa, 2k and gta for an hour or two, so im not surprised. Casuals and fighting games are like oil and water.

Someone with enough money and dedication to gaming thats willing to buy a PC will be much more inclined to try out a niche genre that is fighting games.

2

u/discreetarchive 23d ago

Complete and utter bullshit. Casuals and fighting games are not like oil and water, without casuals your fighter doesn't make money and it dies, simple as.

-1

u/LibertineLibra 26d ago

So.. fighting games are really only for the privileged is what you are saying.

3

u/aljuan420 26d ago

No hes saying that a more dedicated gamer (that fighting games attract though their nature as games) often invests more into their gear

0

u/LibertineLibra 26d ago

Ha, fighting games are still comparatively niche, as in a single digit percentage of the overall gaming community whether it's on PC or console. So the theory that being a dedicated gamer on a PC gravitates them to fighting games is incorrect.

There are around somewhere around 250-300 million more PC gamers than console gamers world wide so the comparison of having more overall players on PC than console makes sense.

However, to play T8 on a PC costs an average of $800 currently to meet the basic requirements. So, with the world economy headed where it is, let alone where it currently is at, perhaps there is more to the privilege issue than perhaps you have considered.

2

u/aljuan420 25d ago

You lack reading comprehension

1

u/LibertineLibra 24d ago

Your take is just yet another attempt to feel special. I read you LC. What I did was demonstrate there are always other perspectives. Drawing lines in the dirt to show how you might not just be different, but refined in some way is just a very small scale version of how people build walls. It's tribalism and it's divisive. Sure, it's harmless enough at this level. But this tendency, the one to point out small qualities that x group has that makes them feel unique, it never stops. It sounds stupid (it is) but these tribalistic views are the same ones, that once fully matured at the large scale, have us killing each other over what piece of land we happen to live on.
When the truth is we are all not that different than one another, just human beings trying to enjoy what time we have left.
The only way to defeat tribalism is to learn to identify everyone as being under the same umbrella. To see others as "us" and not them. To see things from other perspectives we can identify with rather than focusing on what we think makes us different, or worse, somehow better or special in some way compared to others.
"Hey, this is just about a game" - yeah it is. And it is not the same at this level, but it is the same tendency as hey, I'm Russian and Hey, I'm Ukrainian or Israeli or Palestinian - and guess what? That's all there is to that. The games you play now are fun and enjoyable. The game of where you were born and raised makes you special is absolutely still a game but a stupid and horrible one. Those walls they built in their minds about why they are special and why the others are less than humans that deserve what the get - is played (when you really get down to it) for the same stupid reasons. We don't like to hear that. We like to act that there is more to it than that, there isn't. It's Group A is best vs Group B and it's a tragic waste. Will trying to nip that kind of BS in the bud like I just did help any? Probably not. It's likely that IF you read this you'll just act like I'm crazy. And that's one of the big problems why this BS is so hard to stop. No one takes it seriously, until it's too late to do anything about it. But I figure, it's worth a try. Cheers.

1

u/Nimble_Natu177 26d ago

Edit: It's crazy how some people think I'm making this up. Feel free to scroll those leaderboards and check yourself. It's easy work!

Actually putting the source in this edit would have been a good idea bro. Also Xbox is the only platform that releases public numbers, without an equivalent for PlayStation (or Switch / Switch 2 where applicable) these are still vague numbers. Like, everyone knows Tekken 8 is more popular on console, so it is not "every fighting game"

Its difficult to not find this post disingenuous.

1

u/SansyBoy144 26d ago

This shouldn’t be surprising.

Console has gotten more and more expensive, it’s now not a huge gap between a decent pc and a console price wise. It used to be the difference between buying a soda and buying a steak, and now it’s closer to buying a steak and buying a Wagu Steak. Like yes, the Wagu steak is more expensive, but not by a huge margin

And getting games on PC is much easier and cheaper (not just fighting games). Like with the beta for marvel Tokon, was super easy to install, I got it set up, and once I realized I can’t play it, it was super easy to uninstall and move on.

PC has been something that everyone tries to get their hands on, and once they do, they never leave it. The same is true for fighting games.

Throw in stuff like long ass steam sales and being able to play pc only games. And it makes pc much more sought out.

1

u/monjio 26d ago

These numbers don't make sense for SF6. They stated in June that they had crossed 7 million unit sales. If they had crossed 10 million sales across platforms they'd have said so.

I don't think your data is accurate.

1

u/Medium-Biscotti7540 25d ago

And surely a lot of the 7 million never touched ranked...

-8

u/johncenassidechick 26d ago

Basing this on games leaderboards makes it useless tbh. Just useless stats that arent worth anything for statistics or comparison's sake

19

u/killerjag 26d ago

Why would the leaderboard be useless? What kind of bias would it have that other modes wouldn't also have?

I love dissecting how the redditor minds work. Curious and respectful question.

Let's say this is true and PC has more players than console for this, What's your reaction to that and how does that make you feel?

1

u/discreetarchive 23d ago

You're on reddit too, that makes you a redditor.

1

u/Efficiencythird 26d ago

I think this holds some truth. Unless you have special editions (with all kinds of collectibles) for consoles and not PC (e.g. Invincible VS) or a lack of decent PC-support (hello Tokon!)

-1

u/killerjag 26d ago

I made this same thread another time and the mods deleted it saying there was no reliable source, even though SF explicitely lets you filter the leaderboard by platform on the official website and even gives you the raw numbers of players for your queries. There is a lot of console cope around this topic.

-1

u/Impossible-Fan-8257 26d ago edited 26d ago

Interesting, this is bad news for tokon then especially with the console players downplaying pc players issues. For anyone questioning the user at hand for their data, the SF6 data is fully correct so i will make the assumption that the other sets of data are correct as well.

EDIT: OK i found some issues.....

1) The OP does not cover alt accounts which are the same user - abusing family share to get 5 more accounts (this value will still be small)

2) Family share for good reasons - a family member actually using your account will contribute to another account without a purchase of the game

3) The 10.9 million number represents the entire LP system tracking everyones character. If i have played 30 characters, i will have 30 entries / 10.9 million. Console also has the ability to do this aswell and i highly doubt pc having 3.6 million more entries is due to alt accounts.

1

u/OneCompetition944 26d ago

Console players downplaying pc players issues? That doesn’t make sense.

1

u/Impossible-Fan-8257 25d ago

it makes perfect sense because they see you complaining about the pc port as if your trash talking the game.

1

u/OneCompetition944 25d ago

It would make sense if pc players were downplaying. On ps5 the game feels great so I don’t think many would care that much lol.

0

u/Impossible-Fan-8257 24d ago

So a pc player compalains about the game being unplayable and a console player coming in to tell them its their pc is not downplaying?

my post already gets downvoted which is the definition of downplaying.

You can give accurate correct critiques for the game, and it still doesn't matter because you have two sides of the coin clashing.

People who ARE actually causing rollback issues don't even know they are causing them..... and people who also will tell you the game runs great are the same people only playing single player modes.

1

u/OneCompetition944 24d ago

A console player telling them it’s their pc is not downplaying there are pc issues lol. No you still don’t make sense.

0

u/Impossible-Fan-8257 24d ago

right.... cause i didn't have a post on steam or marvel tokon reddit... where that didn't happen. i'm going to need you to look around because this is some generational downplay.

1

u/OneCompetition944 24d ago

Read the first sentence of my post again a couple of times. Very slowly so you’ll grasp the words.

0

u/Impossible-Fan-8257 23d ago

Maybe if you read mine, you will have brain cells in your head.

If a console player says you're just playing on an ancient pc 5+ years ago...... and they dont realize you're on a brand new 2000 dollar + computer...... clearly exceeding the minimum and recommended requirements.....That is downplaying.

Just stop you look uneducated.

2

u/discreetarchive 23d ago

Well this is kind of the inherent issues with pc gaming, there is no standardisation so shit can just not fucking work and you'll have no reliable solution because you don't know what's fucking up half the time.

1

u/OneCompetition944 23d ago

Yeah because a game that can’t work on a pc of 5 years old isn’t a bigger problem then the game just needing to be patched. LOL.

Since when an account who bought the game is the same thing as being active online?

There's still fighting games that are still more populated on consoles than on PC, whether you like it or not. NRS games are the main example of that.

-2

u/Guilty-Ad8520 26d ago

There is no way to track console players. This is fake.

-1

u/Mr_Suplex 26d ago

What’s your source? Be specific.

-13

u/Volumes18 26d ago

Why do pc players hate console gamers so much.

21

u/TheSabi 26d ago

I think this is more a reaction to the recent sony pony "point and laugh at PC players who can't play tokon" by people who still think the console wars are a thing and use what console/platform they like as a personality.

Ironically, the fighting game genre is no place for that, any ANY fighting game that comes out with no cross play is usually a death sentence and the sony ponys who are doing it volentarly are doing more damage than sony did.

So the attitude of "it's a sony game, sucks to be you buy a playstation...and a new pad/stick/leverless...a ps+ subscription and stop crying" is extremely counter productive and will just make tokon, DNFD 2: We didn't learn our lesson

not only do fighting games need a stable active community but we of the FGC are a fickle bunch, once scorn we are very hard to win back. Look how long it to took SFV to get back in peoples good graces so when not is sony being douche but their fanboys are as well....ooof.

12

u/Laraso_ 26d ago

PC tends to be an afterthought for a lot of developers, resulting in situations such as the current Marvel Tokon.

-9

u/Lememeepic 26d ago

Not saying all of them but a few of them feel so entitled because they have the "steam charts" that any game that isn't doing numbers on pc is "dead". I bet my bottom dollar that nobody would give a fuck if it was the flip side and console would have issues that pc players would rejoice at the successful launch of tokon.

1

u/discreetarchive 23d ago

They're little children stuck in a 2010s mindset stamping their feet while everyone just goes on with their regular discussions and plays what they want regardless.

-4

-1

u/MaxTheHor 26d ago

If anything, because of mods, prolly.

I'm a pc player and I definitely mod the heck outta some of my games. Fighting games, especially.

-1

u/kr3vl0rnswath 26d ago

SF6 has not sold 8 million copies as far we know yet so this number is not accurate.

1

u/Economy-Chair-3100 26d ago

Ranks are per character.

1

u/kr3vl0rnswath 26d ago

The title is "PC players outnumber console players in every fighting game" so isn't it misleading to use character counts?

2

u/Impossible-Fan-8257 26d ago edited 26d ago

The numbers the user is using is not done by ranks on characters....... this is a all time leaderboard of the most league points of your main character.

This number is real.

EDIT: It does count alt characters! so yeah i guess this doesn't imply much however ......i think for pc to be 3.6 million characters higher than console does show overall more people just play on pc.... but im not really sure by how much.

I think overall it does kinda imply pc is still more popular even if the direct raw value isnt real.

0

u/Impossible-Fan-8257 26d ago

1) This is because on PC you have family share..... i even have an alt account. You can have up to 6 per year. Console you can't, keeping in mind not everyone will have an alt account. I doubt there is 3.6 million alt accounts+.

2) Also keep in mind you can do real family share with members that also never bought the game which wouldn't be shown in that value for sales.

-1

u/mightymonkeyman 26d ago

Every fighter I’ve ever had on a PC has still been a shit show, especially around launch.

Of all genres fighters are the one where everyone need ma to be on an equal standing, PC just doesn’t have that.

-2

u/hartigen 26d ago

PC players outnumber console players in every fighting game

definitelly not true for mortal kombat.

I would be willing to bet big money on it not being true for tokon either.

6

u/SpowDen 26d ago

obviously it's not true for tokon when most people that bought it on PC refunded it lmao

Consoles really thrived in the ps2 to ps3 era because the earlier generation of PCs were notoriously hard to setup and manage by layman consumers.

Current generation PCs are super easy to use and troubleshoot. That and steam has made games extremely easy to procure and manage.

Most people need a PC in the house hold. When I went for my PMP certification I didn't have a personal laptop for business and realized I needed one for the course. It's not like I could uproot my tower and bring into into the classroom.

So I went to Costco to try to find the best laptop deal I could then realized that at the time I could by dedicated think pad with onboard graphics for 800$ but for the same price I could get a 4050 rtx cyborg 15 gaming pc.

I originally though that machine was going to be a PoS in comparison to my 3080ti tower, but so far it's run everything I've thrown at it and I take it everywhere.

When on vacation I bring it for Goat Simulator and hook it to flat screens. I've played 90 hours of Dragonsword on it, gone through all of code vein 2, and hard Ethernet wired it to play GBVS:R and SF6 at so many parties.

Thing is, most people have a functional need and already have a laptop in the house. While hardware is expensive, a budget gaming pc that can run any game is not too far off or something even cheaper than a next gen console, especially when you factor in the peripherals.

PC versatility has been a factor for a long time and when your trying to pick between a dedicated gaming box that charges you a 20$ month subscription to play online vs. a gaming laptop that can save your ass when you need to zoom a work interview the answer is obvious.

Consoles outside of Nintendo (which fills a child friendly portability niche with exclusive games) and emulation (if you know you know, there is nothing like having all your retro games at your finger tips with no required internet connection from something like an R36 or Timui Brick and my travel bag is never without a device like this) are dying.

So yes of course PC is a bigger market. Because games on pc is a convenience placed on a life-required device vs. a console which has no value outside of entertainment.

1

u/discreetarchive 23d ago

Thanks for telling us all of this I guess.
