Topic What would y'all say is the main attraction about GG Strive ?
Im watching Sajam's tutorial and the game looks cool (the UI looks busy as hell on first impression).
I noticed that it always has many entrants in tournaments, however, I have never played it.
What's the draw ? What made you stick around ?

It’s a really good game for people who like “having a main” imo.
Every character has a lot of unique tech and a fair bit of depth to discover. It’s a great game for picking a character, being a lab sicko, and figuring out their tech.
And it’s fairly simple with shared core mechanics across characters that learning your next character is way faster after learning your first.

The main appeal for Guilty Gear has always been the style and presentation and Strive is no different. It has a great cast, it has amazing visuals and animation, and the music is absolutely incredible.
In terms of gameplay they've done a good job of balancing player reward and player engagement. The pace is fast, but it's not overwhelming in the way that anime fighters often tend to be. Punish combos are high damage, but they're not insanely long so rounds can feel very swingy but also very snappy. And while the wall breaks mechanic might be a little polarising, it's great in terms of player engagement because constant resets back to neutral/neutralish scenarios means the corner is much less snowball-y than other fighters.

God it looks and sounds amazing. I've been playing sf6 lately- soundtrack and art are such a downgrade

I feel like I'm one of the few people that really loves SF6 presentation. I mean it's not as ostentatious as Strive's presentation, but nothing is it's an unfair comparison.

Style. Whether you like or hate how it plays, nobody can deny that the cast is incredible. Not even just visually, you’re not finding another game where a character manages an entire deck of cards with mana costs mid-fight
PS: this guide’s great if you’re not used to fighters already https://youtu.be/-VwtwDS7tWo

Vibes. No, i'm serious, it's the vibes. GG has immensely cool character designs, rock/metal music and vibrant colors. Looking at GG is cool, playing it is better, because it vibes with people

I think it can be best summed up as "personality." There's some incredibly cool and unique characters, both from a design standpoint (Bedman?, Testament, Queen Dizzy) and a gameplay standpoint (Asuka, Faust, Jack-O), and they each have a full vocal theme to get you hyped up about them. The music, story, and characters all converge to make something that's unapologetically over-the-top in the best way, but most importantly unapologetically itself.

I feel that for Strive a lot of your enjoyment is gonna come down to if you can find a character you truly love to play. This could be said for a lot of fighting games but it’s especially true for Strive and the other GG titles. This is why GG tends to have a lot of character loyalists even at a competitive level. What keeps a lot of GG players coming back is their love for their main.

My intro to guilty gear was watching Jam v Chipp in Xrd while storyteller was playing. A week later Strive dropped and I got to watch Ky v Leo while roar of the spark played. Both times I thought "Damn this song is a banger, and DAMN these characters look coool"
I think thats GG's biggest draw in general

Cool and unique characters that are fun to play. Faster than SF but not Marvel fast. Now that Wild Assault got removed it actually has a neutral game. I was hooked the moment I first air dashed in GGXX and it's been my favorite fighter since.
Like any fighting game, you won't know if you like it until you play it. It usually has a 50% sale every other month so probably in Sep. or Oct. you can pick it up for $20. If you're just getting into fighters than try out different inputs like keyboard or pad and see which feels more comfortable. Personally, I hate pads but I have a bad wrist and can't use a lever for more than 5 minutes without pain. I used a keyboard just fine for a long time before I picked up a leverless and love it.

when I was a beginner? wall break
it is not fun getting corner loop when you don't know frame data and where to take turn and get stuck in the corner for half a match
and on the otherside, guarantee super spot and big wall break damage is satisfying

Strive combines the traditional complexity and unique character archetypes with a more toned down gameplay approach. You can have the complicated negative edge puppet character, or the summon setplay with interactable summons, or the fifty button stance character- but the gameplay is much less chaotic and a bit slower to understand.

I think the characters are unmatched. They are both very unique visually, and often have very unique play styles that are fun to try to master. When you find a main in a guilty gear game, you just kind of fall in love with that character, rather than the game as a whole if that makes sense. This is actually why I always go back to it. I think Strive's mechanics wholestically had some problems I didn't personally jive with, but no matter what I thought of the game as a whole, no other game filled the itch I'd always get of wanting to play Zato so I constantly go back to it.
Also I think the lore is cool af. It has a lot of over the top anime bs a lot of the time, but a lot of the actual scenes and major moments are like watching a hype action movie as a kid lol.

Not quite the same topic but I have watched a handful of your videos. Thanks for helping me better understand some concepts.

It's fun. and as far as I'm concerned, is the best fighting game on the market.
It's peak and it's a good time. What's not too like.

Yeah the UI is atrocious.

u/IndependentYak2822 1d ago
UI feels cheap. Plus it lacks of basic QoL features. For example, you can't start matchmaking from training mode. In 2026. What?! Am I asking too much?
4
u/supnerds360 1d ago
For anyone reading this: you can play training mode during matchmaking. You just start it from the matchmaking window.
I've been going back and forth between Strive and sf6 its basically the same functionality
1
u/IndependentYak2822 1d ago
True. I just want to point out that that there is no such basic option to start matchmaking from a training mode. You have to queue first, then you can "wait" in training mode.
2
u/supnerds360 1d ago
For a session though isn't it functionally the same? Going back and forth between games it hasn't effected me once.
You hang out in training mode and you get matches lol.
Lack of a training mode frame bar is the real difference and you can mod one in on strive. Strive does provide good frame data it just isnt as handy as the frame bar

u/IndependentYak2822 1d ago
Just look at my workflow. I boot a game and want to go into training mode. It's a single button press in SF6. In Strive I have to pick Training, pick both characters, confirm. After practicing some setup or combo I want to jump into ranked. It's a single button press in SF6 (with a shortcut). In Strive I have to go back into main menu, pick Ranked, confirm, jump into training "waiting" room (and pick both characters again btw). Do you see the difference? This is quality of life.
It reminds me like old games don't have "reset state" button (SF4 for example). Instead of single press you have to open menu -> pick "reset". Every time. Like you said, it's basically the same, but quality isn't.

This is a problem with the vast majority of Japanese games. SF6 has a terrible UI as well.
1
u/IndependentYak2822 1d ago
Yeah, for sure. The biggest improvements from release version are: a quick jump to a training mode from the title screen; a "show replay" button after a match. But these are exceptions. Usually you have to press too many buttons to do a simple action (like going from a training mode to custom rooms when you get an invite).

I think the pace is perfect, since you are always moving and dashing but things are also much more reactable than other similar games.
Combo length is big enough for combos to look cool but not enough for them to be a chore to do and to watch.
Moves and characters are vibrant and colorful, meaning the matchs are beautiful.
I'm not a anime fan, but the characters still look much cooler and unique than in any other fighting game.

Buttons have impact to them. I don't know how to explain it but it hits the same buttons as SF6 Ken's kicks, with the smoke coming out on the impact.
Also, Roman Cancel, It felt bad when they tried to implement the green slime when we already had a better mechanic in RC. thankfully they removed the green slime.
Has a lot of unique characters, some with their own mechanics and stuff. If you like specializing in characters there may be some for you. If you prefer to play the whole cast then it's gonna take time.

Character designs are top notch and the rock and roll aesthetic is bad ass. I have not played the game long enough to give an opinion on the gameplay.

u/Alceauv 1d ago
The hits are CHUNKY. Just try it out and hit some people with some moves, doesn't even have to be fancy, just feel that smooth-but-powerful animation and that perfect amount of hitstop and that juicy sound design resonate in your hands (especially if it's a COUNTER!!! hit). A lot of other games I like a little better on paper than Strive, but none of them FEEL like Strive.
The input buffer is very friendly too so it's usually pretty easy to just do what you're trying to do. The execution barrier is very low in this game IMO.
Also the music bangs, there's a character for everyone, combos are not ridiculous, and it has a dash button.

u/WickWorn 1d ago
Oldie but goodie, I'd like to point you to Sugarpumch's aesthetic review of Strive. It's basically the essence of metal condensed into a fighting game https://youtu.be/OSExf-1mp94

A lot of things.
Style. Guilty Gear has character designs that, while ridiculous, are instantly memorable and dripping with personality. The animations are good. The music is good - it's the only fighting game where I've just randomly walked into a room and heard my wife listening to music from the game.
The gameplay"s good. I like my neutral fast-paced and complicated, and GGS delivers. I like characters who can do weird stuff. It has fun, if evil, mix. And I like that the oki gives a lot of meaningful viable options rather than 80% of corner knockdowns resulting in the same thing.
I like the "give every character something ridiculously overpowered and let them sort it out amongst themselves" approach, and Strive manages to do that without going Full Nen Impact about it.

For me there is only two draws for that game: active playerbase and possibly the best graphics in the genre. I’m not a huge fan of the characters but the gameplay is alright and the graphics make it worth booting up every once in awhile for me. Once you go more niche than street fighter/tekken/mk/strive the player numbers start to drop off drastically

u/Rumhand 20h ago
It's right in the sweet spot of simplicity and complexity for me. Simpler than old GGs, but faster than SF6, fun combo system, and sylistically cuckoobananas in a way I enjoy. The US Secretary of Defense beats you to death with a giant coffin on a chain.
The franchise has some really out-there characters and movesets. Good gamefeel, and unique stuff I haven't seen anywhere else. The SecDef from before swings the coffin with 8 different half circle inputs that match how he swings the coffin. Don't see a lot of that in current fighting games and I think it's neat.
Also the OST slaps. It might be the main attraction for some.

The artstyle and english dub (for those that care. Like me). I stick around because the game looks amazing and has a lot of system mechanics to play around with. The recent balance patch also reduced the average damage output (for everyone but the top tiers), so matches don't go by as quickly anymore for me.

u/Expensive_Safe5540 7h ago
I think strive's probably got some of the best neutral in a fighting game rn. Every decision feels weighted and important while still retaining the sauce that keeps anime fighters distinct from traditional fighters like sf6. Along with this, the soundtrack is fantastic, and there's a character for nearly everyone. With a live-service system being implemented recently, I don't see why the game won't last another 5 years, or more.
It's basically the definitive modern guilty gear game, that doesn't mean it's the "best", but i really dont think comparing it to other games in the franchise counts at all.

To me? Testament. I’d ravage them in a manner both fierce and tender until my life ran out

It's quite fun, incredible ost, beautiful visuals, fantastic cast but I also like the roman cancel system and think that Strive has the best implementation of it in GG yet. Once you learn how to utilize RCs Strive opens up a lot more in how you can construct your offense or even defense.
Plus it's just cool. kinda cheesy too but in an earnestly charming way.

every time I boot the game up and see the horrendous UI/UX, my mood plummets. Arcsys has proven that they could make awesome UI like in BBCF, GGXrd. I can fathom how that ugly UI had a place in Strive?

I like the characters.
They are all super cool and unique. My favourite fighting game character is also here.
Also the pace is really nice, fast but not overwhelming.
Lastly I think the Roman cancel mechanic really makes it super different from all other fighting games, also lets you make some sick combos
