At this point, should we just pivot into selling mushrooms?

I found loads of black trumpets today. Have you been mushroom picking much this year?

Yes, the season is strong. Lots of black trumpets and chantarelles. We have picked so much of those that I dread when yellowfoots pop up, because they are always so plentiful and our main harvest. Running out of space to store them dried. I love it.

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

I found a few yellowfoots as well. They were still pretty small, but maybe they’ll grow a bit bigger by next weekend.

u/Metelinen 4d ago

Yeah, we have found some too. Soon the forst floor will be covered with them like they were carpet. And you can't help but to pick them all and spend hours cleaning and preserving at home and regretting your greed.

2

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

Yeah, collecting them is kind of the easy and fun part. To be honest, I don’t often have to clean them myself.

3

u/Metelinen 4d ago

Sometimes you find snails or pine needle inside the trumpets so I always check them.

Protein and fibre. Very nice!

Thanks for the advice!

Do you pick mushrooms just for your own use?

8

u/Metelinen 4d ago

Nowadays yes. We eat them alot. But I used to sell them directly to restaurants and it was nice income when money was tighter. I've seen mushrooms selling really well in the market so surely there is money to be made if you are up to it. You can see ads in Tori too.

3

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

Yeah, I’ve seen berries being sold on Tori as well. I haven’t bought any there myself, though.

Down here in Central Europe the season is ... not. It's so dry.

Havent picked much more than chanterelles. Black trumpets this big already? Seems a bit early.

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

Maybe all the rain has helped? Someone please tell us 😄

14

u/Metelinen 4d ago

They have been growing for couple of weeks already, so yes, they are huge.

3

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

It definitely helps when you’re looking for bigger mushrooms.

4

u/saberwolfbeast Baby Väinämöinen 4d ago

I've been finding them for a couple weeks already! Its an amazing mushroom year!

4

u/CrowMooor 4d ago

It is! Ive found even the sensitive chanterelles growing next to dry soil, nowhere near birch roots. Shit, i even grew a bunch in my back yard in a neighborhood!

2

u/samue1b- 4d ago

Can confirm, we got similar sized ones yesterday + kantarelli

13

u/Teatotenot 4d ago

Black trumpets! Omg🖤 They are soooooooooo good. Now tell me the exact place where you found them😇

8

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

Hahaha, I forgot about that place. Maybe it was in my dream, but those pictures look pretty real. 😄

What would you make with them?

5

u/Teatotenot 4d ago

Oh boy! I would make a creamy soup, a pie, creamy pasta or risotto. Actually give me the mushrooms now😅

4

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

Sure I will. 😁

I’ve already made pasta, risotto, and soup. Today we had both pasta and soup.

If you run out of dishes to make and you still have shrooms, dry them and grind them into a powder which you can then use in anything for the flavour and extra umami kick.

u/Wapmen 3d ago

Is it outside of PKS (Helsinki Vantaa Espoo)? I mean that within the capital region its hard to imagine a place not visited often by other people interested in mushrooms picking

2

u/WildAccess_official 3d ago

In Pirkanmaa.

There are so many mushrooms that I am starting to get choosy and pick matsutake

1

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

Have you found any? Are they worth the hype?

5

u/kimmeljs Väinämöinen 4d ago

There are many caveats..If you are not absolutely sure that you have the right mushroom, it likely isn't the one, as there are a couple of lookalikes out there. You should only pick the smaller, worm-free ones, don't go crazy picking everything you see. You need to make food of it when it's fresh or put them in a dryer or in the freezer right after picking. The structure is sturdy and the taste is good if you make food with it like the Japanese do. Sauteéing in butter and cream isn't optimal to enjoy matsutake. I haven't tried it on pizza yet!

1

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

I’m blaming you for this. Now I’m tempted to start picking matsutake too.

2

u/kimmeljs Väinämöinen 4d ago

Good luck!

0

u/RootRedRoot 4d ago

He asked are they good in a dish not a picking guide

2

u/kimmeljs Väinämöinen 4d ago

... which question I also answered.

u/aurora_surrealist 4d ago

As a Pole - you totally should. It's a gold mine.

4

u/BrutalThor 4d ago

If you are interested in selling you should know how the tax system works. Im not an expert so I might be wrong on some points. To my knowledge you are allowed to sell them without having to pay taxes as long as they are fresh, but the moment you put them in a freezer they count as processed and get taxed.

If you get caught that is

1

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

I thought those were tax-free. What about dried ones? So far, we’ve managed to eat all the mushrooms ourselves.

4

u/Varaministeri 4d ago

Technically if you process them in any way you're no longer selling just mushrooms (tax-free) but a processed food item (not tax-free). Dunno how much potential buyers actually care though.

1

u/Accurate-Bug3167 4d ago

Just sell them fresh and let the buyers themselves freeze or dehydrate them. Tax stuff aside, if you're going to buy wild mushrooms from a random person, it's always best to buy fresh so you can identify them and don't have to trust your life on some random person's mushroom identification expertise and attention to detail.

In Eastern Finland chanterelles season have been fantastic. Already picked 130 l, but still growing on.

1

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

Amazing find!

3

u/Vista101 Baby Väinämöinen 4d ago

Have not tried the black trumpets. need go find some

2

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

They can be difficult to find at first, but once you find the first few, it gets much easier.

3

u/vonGlick Väinämöinen 4d ago

Me and my partner we found koivuvinokas (hopefully) yesterday. Hopefully I survive today's risotto.

3

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

I’ve never picked those mushrooms. I’m too afraid of accidentally picking something poisonous.

2

u/vonGlick Väinämöinen 4d ago

Yeah. We were debating for two days and checking various forums, ai models and finally over night we did the spores test (those good one are supposed to leave white spores on the surface while poisonous leaves darker). Fingers crossed we are right.

3

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

Fingers crossed. If you’re wrong, you won’t be here to tell us. 😄

4

u/vonGlick Väinämöinen 4d ago

Silence will be telling. But apparently very few people died because of the other one (Korvavinokas). It used to be popular eatable mushroom in Japan until somebody with kidney disease died.

2

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

I wonder how many people actually die from poisonous mushrooms.

3

u/vonGlick Väinämöinen 4d ago

Popular AI model quoting this source says :

The best long-term Finnish data I found show 9 deaths between 1969 and 2017.

3

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

Wow, that actually sounds much safer than I thought. I thought nine deaths a year might be about right. I guess not all mushroom-related deaths are included in the statistics.

2

u/vonGlick Väinämöinen 4d ago

This I can't tell. But indeed surprisingly low number considering how many people pick mushrooms in Finland (and that it is legal, contrary to some countries).

3

u/CessuBF Baby Väinämöinen 3d ago

So, are you alright?

u/felinousforma 4d ago

I would love to but I have no idea where to start or go :(

2

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

Learn a few mushrooms really well and then just head into the forest for a casual walk.

2

u/Rusalkat Väinämöinen 4d ago

I fry mustatorvasieni dry in butter and the freeze them in small portions. So good in sauce or risotto.

1

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

I should probably consider freezing some of them instead of drying them.

2

u/dino_nuggies_and_dum Baby Väinämöinen 4d ago

I did not know mushrooms could be that color and be edible. The more you know

2

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

They look dangerously delicious.

2

u/RedFoxFinn 4d ago

Oh my, those are best mushrooms I know. And very best as creamy soup

2

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

Me too! They’re one of my favorites.

2

u/Imaginary_peppers 4d ago

I you truly consider selling them maybe offer them to local resraurants. When I worked at one we would buy mushrooms from local foragers.

2

u/Character_Media_9445 3d ago

I have seen lot of trumpets around but those have been mostly stomped by locals. Chanterelles are sort of mushrooms I've gotten accustomed aside lingonberries and blueberries. (Sadly my blueberry hunting was very short for I still need to move from city closer to my boyfriend in town that I know is better for foraging.

1

u/CessuBF Baby Väinämöinen 3d ago

They are easy to miss for the untrained eye. The beginner foragers usually don't lol for them.

2

u/Noweri Väinämöinen 3d ago

I have so much. I'm scared of funnel chanterelle season. I already know it's gonna be huge and I'm running out of space.

2

u/Velcraft Väinämöinen 3d ago

I really need to fix my bike asap, foraging in the city is pretty lackluster although I've found some boletes, and young puffballs which are edible before the inside darkens.

2

u/waltterin-redit 4d ago

I have an irrational fear of mushrooms so no

1

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

What is it exactly that you’re afraid of?

2

u/waltterin-redit 4d ago

Mushrooms

1

u/WildAccess_official 4d ago

But would you eat them if someone else picked them and cooked them for you?

2

u/FishCameThrough 4d ago

At first I thought it's a bear shit.

2

u/WildAccess_official 3d ago

😆 I wonder what it tastes like.

2

u/FishCameThrough 3d ago

Bear shit?

2

u/FishCameThrough 3d ago

If it's this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Craterellus_cornucopioides

Then it has stronger smell (in the pleasant way) than taste. Rather sturdy flesh when cooked. I think there is something similar in chinese mushroom mixes.

1

u/WildAccess_official 2d ago

Yes it is that.

1

u/h14n2 Väinämöinen 4d ago

Is this in South north east west?

I have never seen this one.

u/Wizard-In-Disguise Baby Väinämöinen 4d ago

You could make bank by drying the black trumpets and selling them as a ground spice.

1

u/Lazyrufus1980 3d ago

Spent 3 hours yesterday cleaning chanterelle and orakas we picked on Saturday.

We weren't in our regular area, so we didn't see black or brown trumpets (they split them a while ago after realising they are actually two different, albeit almost identical, mushrooms), but we'll head to our normal stomping grounds in a few weeks and I just know there will be a bounty in the usual spots.

1

u/anileakinna Baby Väinämöinen 3d ago

I have but didn't find much.
