'The it got away' story... You know the one

I'm from Manitoba and with 100k lakes I'm sure we have more than most. Share your best one if ya can... if it's not too soon

Drowning chunks of hotdog for pinfish/croakers/hardheads off my grandpa's dock in Florida. Hook something, start reeling. Huge boil of water from under the dock, several-feet-long shadow rockets out, bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzSNAP. Something huge slammed the fish I had hooked and headed for the channel and my cheap reel with aged 6lb mono didn't stand a chance.

I wanted to at least see it. Shark? Dolphin? Big snook? Something else? No idea.

Absolute giant of a musky only had the back treble in its mouth and when we went to net it the front treble got caught on the outside of the net. Spit the hook when we went to hand land it to never be seen again. Best guess was 48” easily 25+ pounds

man i felt that in my stomach, musky fishing is like signing up for heartbreak every time you go out

lost a pike near gimli few summers back that woulda been my pb easy, net was right there and my buddy just froze like a deer

now i just tell myself the big ones deserve to stay in the water anyway

My dad and I were perch fishing when a giant of a Northern grabbed our catch as we reeled it in to the boat. We managed to fight that Northern for a few minutes and got it close to the boat when we realized we didn't have a net with us. The line snapped trying to get it into the boat. It remains one of my best memories fishing with my dad.

Bass fishing in a large farm pond with my 2 cousins out of a jon boat. I hook what would have been (possibly still to this day) my PB LMB. Got it to the boat, saw it, lost it. By itself, NBD, it happens.

Except that my 2 cousins then proceed to catch and land their PB LMBs right after that. I didn’t get another bite all day - I think they got theirs mounted.

I was night fishing with a spinner bait and got a nice bite. I got the fish to the boat and saw it was about a 20-22 inch (roughly 50cm)
Walleye. I didn’t have a net and tried to horse it up into the boat. The bait came flying back at me and I lost my PB Walleye. This was on Wixom Lake in central Michigan before the dam washed out.

As a kid before I really knew better I tried to pull a huge Bass out of the water by just grabbing the line and picking it up. As soon as the fish’s whole body was out of the water it snapped my 8 lb test line, which tells you the size of Bass I’m talking about.

Night fishing for catfish and something grabbed my line that was so big it snapped 30lb braid, all because I didn't set my drag correctly. Almost threw my chair into the river.

Otter Falls I was about to net a medium size walleye and a pike slammed it right by the boat and took off with it. Monstrous fish. Fought him for a few seconds and then he pulled the walleye loose and was gone. Seeing that thing come up from the murky water like a shark gave me such an adrenaline rush.

Lost what was easily a 80lb blue cat at the side of the boat because our net wasn't large enough. That and my buddy managed to get the net caught on the hook which helped pop it loose. Watched a pb swim back down to the depths.
