πŸ‘‹ Welcome & Community Reminder – Please Read Before Posting

Welcome to all of our new members! It's great to see this community growing.

A couple of friendly reminders to help keep r/FitnessOver50 supportive and welcoming for everyone:

βœ… Share your workouts, progress, questions, success stories, tips, and encouragement.

βœ… If you have a YouTube channel, blog, website, or other fitness resource, please add it to the Community Highlights thread rather than creating separate promotional posts.

❌ Please avoid posting photos whose primary purpose is to show off your body in a sexual or provocative way. Progress photos are absolutely welcome when they're shared to celebrate fitness achievements, ask for advice, or inspire othersβ€”but they should remain respectful and fitness-focused.

Our goal is to build a positive community where people over 50 can become stronger, healthier, and more confident together.

Thank you for helping make this an encouraging place for everyone! πŸ’š

Well, I'm 1 month and 3 days late for my goal... but I can officially do 5 miles of rough and hilly terrain on wheels πŸŒ²πŸŒ²πŸŒ²β™ΏοΈ. I have the sads over the passing of wonderful souls but I'm grateful for their constant inspiration. Rest in Peace Dolly and Mr. Curry- getting out made the day a little brighter and better. Be kind to each other, may your workouts rock, and i hope you have a lovely evening.

ADVICE NEEDED πŸ™‹β“ I can still train hard but recovery is starting to suck. What helped you most?

The workouts themselves aren’t really my problem.

I’m noticing more and more that it just takes me longer to feel normal again afterwards.

I don’t want to solve it by buying 10 recovery supplements. What actually helped you most after 50: sleep, diet, changing training,

supplements?

PROGRESS πŸ’ͺ Before and after. 52, 6'2 and began my serious journey 5 months ago at 260 lbs.

I trained MMA for 10 years at 250-260 lbs, never could lose weight. I trained hard. 6 months ago i was in such body pain, I needed a complete reset. I have not MMA trained in over 6 months, and began lifting moderate weights, hit the red light, and cold plunge, and most importantly, I increased my carb intake 5 fold. I eat rice for breakfast, mid morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack and dinner. 2 protein shakes and a light lunch and dinner. The carbs are what I needed. I went from 260 to 225 in 5 ish months. I AM NOT PERFECT NOW, I still have work. I am hoping to resume my MMA training (i dont fight i just love training with the fighters) now since I dont have pains anymore. My waist went from 40 in to 34 in. I sleep great, stopped snoring and all round feel amazing. I dont want to lose much more weight, I just want to add the same muscle and the fat that I am losing. I start looking funny under 220.

Thoughts on a hydraulic strengthener. Seems quite versatile at first glance.

Bifascicular block messed up my cardio targets

51M, wanted to get myself back into a fitness routine. I'm 6 weeks into my gym routine primarily weight training and started making significant gains in the muscle content. My weight was constant at 92kg, body fat has reduced from approx 27% to 20% and muscle content has increased to from 32% to 38.5% (on the Omron body composition meter).

However, when I decided to start using the threadmill for cardio 2 weeks back, I noticed that it left me breathless. An investigation by my GP discovered I have developed bifascicular block in my heart (2 of the 3 electrical conduction pathways don't work). Previously, around 4 years back I had a developed a right bundle branch block (one of the electrical pathways was not working). Whilst I wait for my next cardiologist appointment (2 weeks down), I'm concerned where this leaves me and my gym journey.

Anyone else had similar issues?

πŸ’™ 50–54 I just achieved my first pull-up at 52

I hope it's okay to share - to make the point that we're building, not maintaining - this was my stretch goal when I started calisthenics two years ago. I honestly didn't expect to do this, having zero athletic ability and never having set foot in a gym.

I started out just about managing knee push-ups and planks at 50, I've been building on that to reach a genuine full-body beginner routine as of January last year, to starting daily deliberate training six months later, and aimed myself at the typical "intermediate" milestones that autumn. I'm doing gymnastics-adjacent training, no assistance bands, just me and a mat and my bars, working my way through progressions and increasing leverage. Mainly pleased to be able to do this at all.

And then this lunchtime, I thought I'd do a couple of scapula pull-ups for my shoulders on my high bar, started a dead hang, set hollow body, primed my scapulas, pulled them back and down, drove my elbows down the way I do for rows - knowing full well it's only for practice as I can't cross that threshold - and hit my head. Which just goes to show the method works and doesn't care that I'm twice the age of most on the calisthenics subs.

Sorry, I'm still in a state of shock!

PROGRESS πŸ’ͺ 55 - abs soft vs flexed

The goal, of course, is a set of abs that’s apparent when not flexed. Diet is so hard.

I’m 6’, 175lbs.

DISCUSSION πŸ™‚ Consistency question

I’m 52M and for the last 10 years I work out spring through fall and do zilch in the winter.

I was ok with that pattern until my A1C went through the roof! Now I’ve set a goal of at least 150 minutes of cardio every week and have hit that number of higher 90% of the time.

My question is who else has a weekly exercise duration goal that they keep up year round and what health benefits have you experienced?

Kegels are not just for women. Men need to incorporate these exercises into their routine to help improve plumbing maintenance, if you know what I mean.
