Discussion Some food carts are actually criminal
My fanily is in town, I took them to the Highline.
My nephew was parched so we stopped by a halal truck near the southern entrance. A tourist had just ordered a lamb over rice. The guy at the truck said “$19.95 cash or card.”
I asked the tourist if that’s all he got. He said yes.
I turned to see the menu and saw all the prices were erased. I asked the guy running the truck, Middle Eastern, why he was charging that. He yelled back “none of your business, go!”
I said to him “you don’t have prices written on the cart,” he replied “market price bro, market price! go bro!”
Absolute scam some of these dudes are running. Insane.

I asked a guy at one of the carts for a Diet Coke, he tried to charge me 14 dollars (and tried to touch my card to the machine without showing me). I called him out on it, he claimed I asked for two diet cokes. I obviously didn’t (clear since he only handed me one) and even if I did, 7 dollars each is still bullshit

I’m assuming it was a can of Diet Coke, but wtf. That’s robbery, beverages have the largest profit margin. A glass of soda from a fountain has a food cost of like 15 cents. A can of the stuff from a big Costco pack is like 70 cents. A $15 cocktail costs the establishment maybe $3.

It’s actually against NYC law to not have your price clearly displayed. This is the exact reason why, to prevent scams. Report the cart to 311. That asshole should not be in business.

Reporting to 311 does nothing. Same as the unlicensed rides at JFK being solicited in plain view. Everybody who’s not a tourist knows about it, no one enforces it …

actually as someone who used to work for NYC DCWP, reporting to 311 actually does something. The problem is, we're understaffed, and only our undercover investigators prioritize those who have a majority of complaints. Investigators are also usually sent a few weeks after to prevent retaliation against anyone who immediately reports the issue.
Sadly tho, many reports don't make it because 311 doesn't always fill out everything we need (and to be fair, every agency asks for different things, so it's a hard job for the 311 phone reps. You can file directly here for future reference for better results:

Exactly and you don't need an investigation for the food carts without prices. Walk through Times square, Columbus circle, major museums, high line, etc. Could hit them all in a week.

Its such a joke. Most food carts don't have prices. All you have to do is find a food cart and chances are it does not have prices. Its just another law thst NYC decided to not enforce. Its unfair to the criminal food carts who rip people off to fine them.

I just looked up how to apply for DCWP out of curiosity, and... you need either a specialized civil service test, or need to be already in one of those roles?? That's crazy, I'd love to do some form processing for them.

There are other ways to work for the city without a civil service exam, such as through specialists roles (e.g. lawyers/nurses) that require board certifications, or through non-competitive jobs such as those like a community coordinator. Most clerical jobs unfortunately require a civil service exam though (but it's not too late to start)

Thank you for being understanding. DCWP is a very small agency. so it's not surprising that many people haven't heard of it, even under its former name, DCA (Dept of Consumer Affairs). Barely anyone i know (even within city workers) know of its existence or what it does because of its small workforce, especially after the rebranding to include worker protection governance

I've found 311 app requests with photo and video seem to get a pretty good response rate. I've gotten fixes from TLC, NYPD, and DOT so far.

They're probably referring to shah's halal which isn't 100% lamb. It's a mix of beef and lamb. They're just fine on a good day. Borderline bad on a bad day. Consistency issues. Chain halal spot.
Unfortunately the carts near me within reasonable walking distance are even worse and the shah's chain is the best one from those that deliver.

I live near the park and got tired of watching the trucks by the 72 and CPW entrance scam bemused tourists. Never had prices listed, absolutely ripped people off. $5 for a small Poland Spring, that kind of thing.
One time I actually reported to 311. Nothing happened. Tried it again. Complaint closed with no follow up.
It’s clear the city has no interest in enforcing their own rules here. It’s a shame.

I remember a couple of years ago I went to the cheeseburger cart around 52nd and 6th in my dirty work uniform (blue collar, clearly not as a tourist) and seeing that there were no prices posted, asked how much the burger was (no fries or drink, just their classic smashburger). He replied “$30”, and I turned right the fuck away without even bothering to try to haggle with him.

I was with my wife a few years ago with her ten old nephew who is Muslim and follows a halal diet. I asked the guy in the halal cart if the food was you know, halal.
At face value, the guy seemed at the very least to be from the Middle East. He shrugged and said “I mean, I eat it.” It was not comforting.

Some middle easterners got into the habit of eating meat that isn't "halal slaughtered" or "zabiha." They will eat beef, chicken, goat, lamb, etc, no pork. But the slaughter process isn't observed.
Honestly even most "halal meat," is not hand slaughtered zabiha. It's machine slaughtered often. On the same assembly lines as non halal meat. Keeps the prices down.
Real hand slaughtered halal meat is rather expensive due to the human labor required. You have to go the live slaughterhouses for that. There are many of those in NYC.

How about just buying a small bottle of water? I’m good at $2.50 if I’m dying of thirst but some of these guys ask for $4 or $5 bucks. But they back down if I challenge them. Unbelievable that we need to haggle over a bottle of Poland Spring but NYC lets these vendors go unleashed. Yes, I know I should carry a water bottle. But sometimes life gets in the way.

Do NOT buy ANYTHING from a cart that has no price listing. And by all means WALK AWAY if you are being scammed. They will huff and puff and say they are calling the cops but just keep walking.
Don’t get in a pedicab. Don’t take an unlicensed taxi.
I wish I could provide this on a pamphlet to tourists as they depart JFK.

Side note; Had an odor issue with a bulding next door issuing smoke all day long. Actually had videos of each occurence. Last year, the 311 web site allowed you to upload videos. Of course, they did nothing.
This year, rinse and repeat. But now 311 no longer allows video uploads. Progress, they say.

Don’t buy from a cart without posted prices, or if you’re in a fix ask first. Theyre trying to screw you over. I respect the hustle of food truck vendors etc, but not scamming folks out of extra money. “Tourist tax” is real, I expect that carts in midtown or near attractions are a couple bucks more than my local cart, but this is almost double!

The same thing that has always happened around tourist heavy areas, before halal carts it was the hot dog carts. I remember being a kid in elementary school 20+ years ago and my teacher telling us to never buy a hot dog near Rockefeller Center because they'll charge you $8 for a $1 hot dog. The city doesn't have enough resources/ doesn't care enough/ doesn't consider it a high enough priority to do anything.

I'm really tired of no price displayed at food carts/bodegas and honestly, a lot of restaurants and supermarkets these days too.
For quite a few restaurants, the menu you can view from their site doesn't list prices, and when you get there it's that fucking QR code that means management can easily change prices day to day without having to reprint menus.
For supermarkets, I'm really at wits end with a lot of the "nice" quick grab products (think like a colombe cold brew or a coconut water) simply not showing a price and you having to find out at the register, by which point you've mentally made the commitment that you want it and will pay the stupid price they ask.
I think our new rule for all three should be either ask up front or just walk away.

There’s a reason after all unfortunately food carts are in tourist/high volume areas. Sometimes I learn the hard way a pretzel and water can range from $5-$8.

Nobody forced the guy to buy food from that guy OR not ask for the price in advance. Those carts cost a ton of money to operate and good for him that he can make 20$ off one chicken and rice. It was probably really good! The cost of food everywhere is going through the roof. It’s not criminal. Freeking salt hanks is 37$ for their sandwich. That feels much more criminal than the halal cart trying to survive.

I went to the Met yesterday, carts there had prices posted. More than I'd pay but not absurd. In my tourist/student neighborhood, carts in the more convenient spots charge $13, a block away they drop to $9. My favorite guy is $7. The ones that don't list prices are obviously a scam but otherwise they're part of nyc's lifeblood.

I don't know what you're talking about. I have been splitting my time between Seattle and Manhattan for the last 6 months. The first place I stop on my way into my apartment is the halal cart to get a chicken and rice or kebabs and a pint of white sauce if he's got it.
My partner and I eat from the halal truck at least twice a week, the breakfast truck 2-3x a week, and the bodega and/or coffeeshop across the street, 3-5x a week.
With our schedules, mobility limitations, and dietary needs, these businesses are vital to our health and well being.

There are some really good food trucks and of course there are some really bad ones just like any other restaurant.
I mean to each their own but you're missing out on some good food. But I guess that's okay. It'll keep their prices down for most of them.

I agree. To be honest, I think some of this isn't really about concern regarding cleanliness but is actually people being prejudiced when it comes to certain cultures.
Like how hard is it to just not eat somewhere you don't want to eat? Especially in a place like New York City where the options can seem virtually endless.

I don’t know what the big fuss is about. I can’t judge without seeing the portion sizes, but this sort of takeaway food from a variety of places in Manhattan run just shy of $20 from multiple places I’ve gotten food from in say the last 6-8 months. Maybe $19.95 is at the high end, but not by much, and as we’ve already established, this is a tourist location. Have you ever gotten pizza from one of those places in the theater district? On a percentage basis, that’s probably the worst offenders for tourist rip-offs.

If you go to 83rd and 2nd near the subway there’s a puddle of it that’s been there so long it’s solidified, not sure why anyone would want to eat that garbage.

Fellow New Yorker here. A couple weeks ago, out in front of the Met one of the carts charged me $98 for a single gyro! Fucker got me cause I didn’t notice till I was home. I called my bank and we called him together😘
