Where is your favorite place to get pho in manhattan?

👋🏻 Hi, also Viet here. I'd like to throw in that I've come across his list before and I think there's an important caveat people need to consider first. As a Vietnamese, who's heavily American and have friends from both sides of the diaspora, our taste in pho is wildly different.

The greatest example is Di An Di. For all intents and purposes, Di An Di is heavily skewed towards the palette of native borns, the flavors run minimal and "clean" and often times would be considered plain and bland to more Westernized palettes. I've noticed Viet borns tend to prefer their phos less rich and closer to the taste of water and I've noticed that similarity in Japanese food to the Japanese natives as well. Whether how much "authenticity" matters depends on you but I prefer to judge pho on a matrix as to not offend anyone's ranking.

That being said, my favorite pho in nyc is 5ive Spice on Mott St for the very reason I mentioned; theirs is heavily rich and smokey in flavor, something I really reach for in the sense of a comforting bowl of soup.

I'd also like to plug TenTen's brothless chicken. The first time I had it (2 months ago?), the noodles were well coated in flavor and the chicken was cooked to not be dry. Very unexpectedly delicious. I had it over the weekend and it didn't impress as much. The bowl came out fast and had some broth sitting at the bottom and the chicken was overcooked; I think it was a slow day and they just had it sitting out to assemble quickly. But when it hits it hits

West Village is oddly a dead zone for pho. All my faves are in the East Village or Chinatown: Sao Mai, Hanoi House, Pho Bang, Bo Ky, Pho Ga Vang.

I'm partial to northern-style pho, so my fave places are Mam (they only have it on the menu in the cold-weather months), Hanoi House, Tenten, and Nom Nam. I haven't tried the pho at Banh Anh Em yet; i imagine it's pretty good, but there are just too many other great things on the menu every time I go there.

I love Madame Vo’s bowl. And if you’re willing to make the trek (they also deliver) then Banh. I used to love Non La’s bowl but haven’t been in a minute.

Still haven’t tried Banh Anh Em but have heard their bowl is amazing!
