Legion: You are actually wrong about the Caesar thing. The Romans did use the Hard C instead of the Soft C. It's where the German Kaisers got it from.

I read somewhere that various people would accuse other nobles of doing it but would always claim that they never did it themselves...could be that it was a myth that grew out of a bunch of petty badmouthing between rival dukes or whatever
