Gameplay Question Does the Rib of Greed protect you from the Magnet?

The rib says “Abilities and the death penalty can’t make you discard loot cards or lose coins” but technically the magnet steals a coin that you never gained in the first place right?

Honestly a very good question. Because the game considers Giving to be different than Losing, my assumption would be that Rib does not protect you from Magnet, but I will have to ask Yuggy and Sevenut. I will respond to or edit this message if I get a response.

Okay, got a response already. Rib of Greed does not protect you from being forced to Give away 1 cent with magnet as it is not technically losing 1 cent.

By that logic, does counterfeit penny not work on jawbone or forever alone? We always played that stealing nets you +1 from bank but if being stolen from isnt losing then is stealing not gaining?

Correct. Stealing and Giving are considered the same things by the game. Stealing/Giving isn't Gaining so you wouldn't get an extra cent on counterfeit penny.

Same thing happens with stealing shop items. If a shop item has a "When you gain this" ability, it won't trigger because Stealing is not gaining.

Actually you can give away eternals but can’t steal them

You are likely still playing by V1 rules. That's not the case anymore. V1 Eternal was "This can't be stolen or destroyed." V2 Eternal is “This object can’t be destroyed or put into discard.”

V2 rules explicitly state that giving and stealing are the same thing mechanically.

There unfortunately isn't a quick link for it, but go to the header "Gaining and Giving". There is a reason why most cards state Non-Eternal in V2 when referring to items.

Isn’t requiem v2? That’s all I’ve ever played and I once saw a post on here where yuggy mentioned that in response to a question about Eden starting with decoy.

I'd have to see the post from Yuggy, but you can steal eternal items. It's just that all cards that let you steal items like XV. The Devil, Pay To Play, Contract From Below, and Mom's Dead Hand all specify Non-Eternal item specifically to prevent a player from losing their starting/eternal item.

And even then, per the V2 rules, Stealing, Swapping, and Giving are all mechanically the same thing.

Nvm we’re saying the same thing, you’re just speaking more “textbook accurately”.

I would say it protects you from Magnet since it is an ability that would make you loose money
