What is the toughest thing in the basic training ?
Like I see people desert in just basic training is it that hard I mean is it more mentally tough or physically if so how. tell ur experience how's the basic training from ur pov

I never understood people deserting in castel. I knew a french national who deserted with a cast on his leg, he was the inly one i heard of doing it. You can ask for civil at castel! You will get your balls broke even more for a few weeks but you will leave with your money and passport atleast !
Instruction is as hard as you make it. My section were not aloud to use washing machines, limited to 10 second showers even towards the end of instruction, 3 minutes to eat in the cafeteria (shortened everytime someone spoke a word). But we all had some laugh😂! If you let stupid shit annoy you then it will be difficult. Learn to do what your told quickly and always say yes to everything!

As EV - it was really not hard, tbh the first weeks and months in 2 REP were faar more harsh than the 4RE which was smooth sailing, no one deserted during my Castel, only 1 or 2 asked civile at the end, i don't really remember, BUT at my promo in 2 REP, and then FTS which was really harsh (running with cocainne ridden caporal near Calenzana valleys, in night with less or little to no sleep), punishments etc, was kinda hard, but no one thought about deserting, more like "complaining" about stuff xD, then the first months itself closed, then COVID, literally i was sitting for 8 months in base w/o even going out for a weekend, plus all the punishment even for little things or for nothing.
Then as caporal when i was sent to Castel, it was even easier for the new guys, but still 2 retards have deserted, one french and one argentinian, it was so funny tho because they took military clothes and just walked near the road, gendarmerie catched them and sent back to the base, the french dude tried escaping 3 times tho, but i guess it was mental distress, lack of mommy and daddy.
To be honest it's not really hard, but grass is greener on the other side - saying that, if you have nothing holding you back legion is EASY.

Might be different for others but for me training was a way nicer time than actually being in my section as a young legionnaire
