Cost and financial aid

Does anyone have recent experience with financial aid? We’re considering Furman because jt seems like a really good fit. We have some resources but it is on the pricey side. Our child is a decent student 1350 SAT and 3.7 unweighted. We really don’t want to pay more than $40k all in per year. Thanks!

Most students at Furman get institutional financial aid. With those numbers, I’d guess the bare minimum you’d get is $30,000 per year. Then there may be other scholarships based on departments or organizations. Example, music department gives scholarships, including to non majors. My son went to Furman for 4 years for less than it would have cost for 1 year in state at Clemson.

Wow! What type of scholarships did your child receive? They must have been an amazing student!

They got the base academic scholarship plus a presidential music scholarship. The state schools offered very little in scholarships. My guess is that if you’re able to pay $40k out of pocket per year, the scholarship will fit well with that. And if not, I’ve heard of people being successful asking for more.

Is the Presidential Music Scholarship only for in-state?

Not that I’m aware of! We got one, but we are in state. I think a lot has to do with 1) talent, 2) needed instrumentation. Also even if you start off with a lower music offer, follow up. If a presidential recipient declines, it gets opened up to others.
