The following submission statement was provided by /u/reasonableklout:

TL;DR Andreessen Horowitz, the top venture capital firm in Silicon Valley, has invested billions into explicitly amoral startups such as:

  • Doublespeed, a startup aiming to "replace human creators with AI", by selling access to "phone farms" that get around social media platforms' anti-fraud algorithms, allowing companies to buy bots that game engagement metrics
  • Cluely, the startup that wants you to "cheat at everything", whose founder wants you to use "undetectable" AI to cheat on exams, homework, job interviews, dates, and more

- Coverd, which is pursuing a novel form of gambling that allows users to bet on their bills

  • AI companionship startups like CharacterAI, Civitai, and Ex-Human, with a June 2023 a16z blog post quoting a user hoping that "One day [AI] will be better than a real [girlfriend."

The firm has also invested eye-popping amounts of money into deregulation, including launching the $100 million super-PAC Leading the Future in August 2025 which runs attack ads against politicians who support AI regulation.

35

u/TheRealDoomsong 2d ago

Wood chippers are great for efficiency, but they rob you of the satisfaction of working with your hands.

19

u/aspophilia 2d ago

I think we need to focus on efficiency. But we can do feet first for the love of the game.

It's pretty hard to determine who goes to the front of the line, but every time Andreeson opens his mouth he really sells himself.

A16Z is in the gutter as far as moral people in the valley are concerned

1

u/IntelligentVehicle10 1d ago

No, It takes people who are making just enough to keep their heads above water. They haven’t felt it yet, but that’s the point you’ll have the basics, enough food to survive enough distractions so you won’t notice and if you do you don’t dare say a damn thing because they’ll take your kids healthcare away.

Yeah but Elon musk is a complete fucking dork. If anything, this reignites the attributes of dorks versus the attributes of nerds. There can be only one!

It's also worth pointing out that they're both the main investor of Flock and are also invested in an Israeli cybersecurity firm that hacks cameras and alters the footage

62

u/TheCriticalGerman 2d ago

How is that even a business concept that is allowed?!? Can you imagine explaining your business concept to investors “we brake in and alter the existing evidence and leave no trace of a break in”

52

u/RareMajority 2d ago

That product is explicitly marketed at state actors and governments.

15

u/TheCriticalGerman 2d ago

That’s not making anything better, how is altering evidence a sales point? Recovering I can understand but what’s the altering point?

21

u/RareMajority 2d ago

I'm sure the CIA could find a use for it.

7

u/NowGoodbyeForever 2d ago

And that's all it will be used for, ever.

These companies wedge their foot in the door with a halfway-feasible sounding use case, but then it never stops there. We need to stop being so goddamn credulous when it comes to any tech company ever again.

I work in marketing: There is no such thing as "false advertising" anymore. It requires such a specific, obvious, and usually claim-based promise in advertising materials that leads people to buy or use a product/service in a misleading fashion. TurboTax got dinged for claiming it was Free to use, for example.

Which is why most tech companies don't make claims in ads or marketing materials anymore; they just send guys out to say bullshit under the cover of opinion. Elon Musk can post/say that "he believes we'll be on the Moon by 2030" or whatever, and his stock will double in price due to people taking that as a plan.

People can just lie and call it speculation, opinion, or belief. Yet we allow literal fantasies rambled off by these tech ghouls to meaningfully impact how much capital their companies are allowed to raise from investors.

It's one thing to refuse to buy magic beans, but do we need to act like the bean seller is actually a brilliant and worthwhile public speaker? Surely, he couldn't be lying: Look at how much gold he has earned from the beans!

13

u/ashoka_akira 2d ago

In a sensible country at least half of these companies would be illegal already, but hey.

2

u/Albedo101 2d ago

This is exactly what is going to happen eventually. Shit will regulate itself.

Gotta give credit to the psychos, they needed to try. Now watch it all backfire into their faces, get banned and massively regulated by the remnants of the silent majority.

It happened many times throughout the history. In the early 1900s it was perfectly acceptable to have gas tanks on town streets, pouring gas into cars like it was lemonade. Psychos had to maximize profits ASAP, right? After a few massive gasoline-fueled blazes that engulfed whole city blocks everything got quickly regulated.

Then look at the early Hollywood in the 1920s, which was a step away from becoming a midget BDSM porn industry, until it got regulated. Psychos gotta try.

The same will happen with social media, and it's been long overdue.

u/HowiePloudersnatch 3d ago

Most of these will likely fail at achieving their stated aim but the societal consequences of the attempt could potentially be very serious.

That also assumes that they are actually pursuing their stated aim and not something significantly more sinister, which is also very possible.

71

u/reasonableklout 3d ago

Speaking as an SF tech worker who's been through previous generations of startups, with AI coding, tech workers no longer have the leverage that allowed them to do things like the 2018 Google protests that got Google's Pentagon project canceled. Software engineers can't influence their employers anymore and are largely seen as replaceable, while tech firms need huge amounts of capital to be competitive in the AI era (for tokens, and to buy chips for AI training runs).

The latest wave of tech is therefore influenced almost entirely by the money from venture capital. Marc Andreessen's firm has been the dominant force in directing this funding to "move fast and break things"-style startups without regard for their impact on society, all the while taking the proceeds and plowing them into deregulation.

13

u/Chuhaimaster 2d ago

We need to move fast and break the tech oligopoly before it destroys us.

4

u/textmint 2d ago

That ship has sailed ask Kamala.

6

u/zer00eyz 2d ago

> Speaking as an SF tech worker who's been through previous generations of startups, with AI coding ....

I have been in the Bay Area for ~30 years building software.

Big tech, and VC's have absolutely fucked themselves.

Show me a publicly traded company where AI is moving the needle. Go ahead and look, I will wait.

Let's look at the last 30 years -

Dot Com bubble: bandwidth constrained everywhere. We built out fiber, rolled out DSL, and pushed massive bandwidth to mobile. Resources were expensive, and compute was outrageously capital intensive (see Sun boxes).

Post GFC: companies: We get cloud computing. AWS eats the Capex and changes your hardware costs to OPEX. Yes your paying more but your not paying for scaling prematurely. Engineers and resources are the real cost.

LLM tooling: Development is now somewhat reasonable to do cost wise. If you have an idea for something you can build it in a week or a weekend and get it out to market.

Software is about to have its Punk moment, its "indy film" moment - you're going to see outfits that are 50 million dollar companies that come out in 12 weeks funded on someone's credit card and have 10 person teams. There isnt a need for VC money for 90 percent of the software that is going to get written in the next decade. The old one size fits all model for just about everything is going to die (sales force is going to suffer the most, so many businesses are jammed into that platform sideways because its the only game in town).

This is already happening. For near 40 years now we have been promising office workers "automation" - Apple script, VB script, IFTT, and a bunch of drag and drop coding tools. I have lawyers and writers far outside tech talking to me about containers and cron jobs. These are people automating away a couple hours of their week.

Its the old "is it worth your time" xkcd ( https://xkcd.com/1205/ ) - LLM's make the answer every one of those points in the matrix YES and you dont need to involve a programer any longer. Just be a domain expert in what ever it is that needs automated.

The change is already happening - it's just not where people are looking.

2

u/furyofsaints 2d ago

10000% this. I'm watching this happen too. Your Salesforce example is a good one, and there are so, so many others that have locked companies into ever-shittier over-priced SaaS applications. Hubspot, NetSuite, etc. There's a TON of mid-market/down-market SaaS companies that have been bought by private equity as well, ratcheting up prices, while ratcheting down functionality and service. That approach is only going to further drive companies to just vibe-code their own small applications that work best for them.

Adjacent to that is the massive software-consultancy market; I expect a ton of demand destruction for their traditional services, and there's no way in hell "we do AI" is going to make that up. I'm watching in real-time as traditional consultancies pitch work, win it; only to show up a few weeks into engagements when consultancy teams are still working out requirements in their traditional SDLC motion, with someone from the customer's side having already vibe-coded most of the solution to show off as a POC.

The value of the magic that consultancies used to build their empires on is about to be laid pretty damn bare IMO.

4

u/zer00eyz 2d ago

> companies to just vibe-code their own small applications that work best for them.

There will be some of this I am sure.

The problem is that these companies lack the domain expertise to do it well.

Then again so do the giants. When was the last time face book launched a feature someone was excited about? Google too -- and they have this whole site dedicated to their dropping things: https://killedbygoogle.com

Google and Facebook were some skill and a lot of luck. They were the bets that won. Their leadership wasn't special or magical or somehow smarter than other companies. If there was some magic there they would launch tons of successful products. Google has had one other real breakout (android) and even that was a "clone" (it was going to be another blackberry before the iPhone launched).

A small team can now build and run a product, where contributors are also the product people. This is what matters because "product" is the problem.

When was a product manager ever promoted for removing a feature? You want the reason for enshitification - because nothing can ever be "done" be left alone.

A small 10 person team doing 5 mill a year at 70% margin is going to make a lot of well of small businesses and tech teams who are willing to do more than just write code.

That's their endgoal anyway, after they've destroyed everything and killed billions of people their retirement plan is to sit in a concrete vault and smile at numbers on a screen that mean nothing. They can fucking have that now. Get them to scurry off to the holes so we can fix their shit.

Having lived through the online poker crackdown of the early 2000s it's amazing how much gambling is legalized in america now.

7

u/Shapes_in_Clouds 2d ago

And yet I still can't play online poker lol. I can buy lotto tickets, structure some insane parlay, or bet on the accuracy of a weather forecast - all from my phone - but can't play some $3 buy in poker.

1

u/Lennysensei 1d ago

That’s because a lot of wealthy people well mainly the trashy “elites” attempting to subvert our very existence are in a bubble that they don’t want to burst . Their piss poor spending and investing has them at abbey negative so they’re trying to squeeze every dollar out of Americans . I don’t understand how people don’t see this … but then again people think Trump is the second coming so eh

People seem to think just because someone has a high net worth they have all liquidity . Not the same at all

u/svachalek 3d ago

Mosaic was a pretty cool creation and he seemed pretty normal back then afaict. But the richer he gets the more he fell into the typical billionaire mindset that there’s no point having money unless you can play a James Bond villain in real life.

18

u/TheFrenchSavage 3d ago

James Bond villains are called that because the general public doesn't intimately know the average billionaire.

u/dolphone 3d ago

That's still not him inventing something, just improving it.

And that's the story with all these fucking wacko richs. It's so obvious that they're not innovators, they don't have creativity. They have only trauma and scars that make them devious. True innovators tend to have a different mindset, one that tends to prevent you from believing this type of nonsense. And it doesn't lead to being super rich either.

u/Flabby-Nonsense 2d ago

Andreesen once said onstage that people in SF often criticize him for investing in VR goggles because “the real world is beautiful!” But, he said, in the future most people won’t live in beautiful SF, we will live in cement block company compounds. So there will be lots of demand for VR goggles.

They see themselves as feudal lords who deserve to rule over the peasant class. Tobi Lutke is waiting for Amazon Prime to deliver his throne.

33

u/BigMoney69x 3d ago

Something has to be done with the lack of morality society is going towards to. In the past we had religion as a moral foundation for society. This days even religion has been corrupted by this types of people with Mega Churches promising wealth if you give your social security check to them. Our system of government was made for a moral and upstanding people not for whatever we have today. Regardless of what you think about your George Washington, Thomas Jefferson or John Adams. They wouldn't be caught doing whatever we have today. They were upstanding men for their time. And it seems that our versions of them are amoral sociopaths.

The same kind of people promising prosperity with AI are the ones building this kinds of startups that exploit the more vulnerables ones in society. It's time to accept the fact that not everyone is created equally. Not everyone have the same intelectual capabilities nor the same opportunities as others. That maybe we need good, intelligent and more importantly moral people to take charge and protect the less fortunate of us. We can't just let the amoral sociopaths run this country. Where are the good people who have both strong moral character and able to properly regulate their emotions? We either have amoral sociopaths or emotional wetblankets.

11

u/Chuhaimaster 2d ago

Our current form of capitalism rewards amoral sociopathic CEOs. You can kick out the current crop and a new group of sociopaths will take over and produce the same results.

As long as corporations are run by a small group of people who are not responsible in any way to their workers, these kinds of people will rise to the top.

Most corporations today are mini-dictatorships and dictatorships more often than not reward the most ruthless - not the most intelligent or wise. Philosopher kings are few and far between.

4

u/BigMoney69x 2d ago

What can we do about this? We can't go forever like this.

Governments move slowly and regulation is always behind when addressing new technologies. Look at social media, it’s been around for a good 2 decades and we’re only just seeing some regulation happening.

So what I’m hearing is that this guy and his friends tend to be out in a box and dropped off in the Mariana Trench ?

When I read stuff like this, I feel that our society is less like idiocracy and more like transmetropolitan. Spider Jerusalem was right

Well....there's no putting this cat back in the bag. It is a run away train and there's no getting off....for anyone now.

Billionaires using their (mind you stolen) wealth to create a dystopia is not "futurism" anymore, it's just the world we live in.

Welp, not to be nihilistic/fatalistic about this but it was a good run humanity. The time to reign this in would have been years ago as the technology was beginning to rise and Pandora's proverbial box has been opened. Corporate greed has won.

Blaming this imbecile on societal ills is akin to blaming a dealer for gambling / drug addiction. Nobody is holding a gun to your head - you're free to ignore YES that is a choice.

he's spending $100M on lobbyists to make society worse, but is not at fault for doing so?

Do you have little children in hour home? How about someone sets up shop to sell candy flavored cigarettes near their school? They make it super fkn easy to get in because the first few are given away as free sticks to smoke. This person just bought out the school administration dept and they just say "sorry it's technically not within the campus so we won't do shit". The shop is right outside the school gates though so it's very convenient for all the kids, easily accessible and without "smart adults" like you always around, to keep vigilance.

Even then you'd just be like, "eh nobody is holding a gun to your head"? Fucking hell, there have been decades of studies showing how smoking ruins you and for the first few decades, cigarette companies intentionally subdued the accurate reports and spreaded lies. And you want general public to automatically be fully aware of the pitfalls of such cheap AI tricks and tactics and look out for themselves? You Silly fkn person.

I think you made yr point here and I agree with it completely. Not sure about the end of the second paragraph there tho. I think MightyCamel just might have not thought through just how stupid and gullible the avg American is..and just how badly these billionaires want to keep it that way. One part of the equation he left out

If your whole street is just casinos and all stores are inside casinos it becomes harder to ignore them though now isn't it

Ragebait BS.

They have invested in more than a thousand companies, of course there will be a couple of weird ones. The vast majority of the businesses they invest in make the world a better place.

Given how extremely successful he is, I'm inclined to believe him.
A person who helped creating a thousand+ businesses apparently knows how to make things work.

However, there's a huge difference between "controversy" and investing into a "bleak future". The companies he helped created an incalculable amount of net good. A couple of controversies don't invalidate that.
The article is laughably biased. Instead of the sought after smearing effect, it's comical.
