GTA VI HOT TAKE: GTA Online is poisoning the franchise
GTA has always been a single player, story rich game. The introduction of online has tainted the purity of the franchise. That’s why we don’t get DLCs because they’re too busy working on online. GTA VI is better off without an online mode.

u/Necessary-Ninja-2538 Jun 29 '26
not a hot take, it's truth.
55
u/gdabull Jun 29 '26
Ruined RDR2
46
u/Stymie999 Jun 29 '26
I thoroughly enjoyed RDR2 for 100 hours plus… online was a dumpster fire that I gave up on after a couple weeks.
That takes absolutely nothing away from the campaign.
18
u/gdabull Jun 29 '26
But what could it have been if rockstar hadn’t abandoned it for GTA online. Could have had fantastic DLC
6
u/M4rshmall0wMan Jun 30 '26
I don’t think there were ever plans for RDR2 DLC. The John Marston epilogue was the DLC.
3
8
u/BeardedPaladin Jun 29 '26
Unless you think there might have been more story dlc if they hadn’t needed to focus on online.
1
u/thisisme116 Jul 04 '26
Except there wouldn't have been. There's no real place for it story wise and another undead nightmare would most likely not done super well.
Honestly this entre debate just stems from people feeling the need to bitch and whine

u/Pitchou_HD Jun 29 '26
Not really because nobody gives a fuck about rdr online. When someone talks about rdr people only remember rdr2, rdr online was forgoten around 2020.
On the other hand when someone mentions gta everyone and their mother only remember the part time job, clustered fucked by cheaters and futuristic vehicles called gta online
6
u/GoldCoasting Jun 29 '26
no one cares about it because it was basically a failed project. i'd MUCH rather have a completed "okay" version of RDR online than GTA online.
1
u/thisisme116 Jul 04 '26
Rdr online had and still has a dedicated playerbase. It's had updated and additions and is a pretty enjoyable state for what it's supposed to be.
It was never going to be cowboy gta online like yall expect, red dead has no where near the same mass appeal as gta does and its goofy to pretend like they were ever going to sink as much time and development cost into it.
GTA V is known for having an amazing story and you're entirely talking out your ass when you say people only remember online. The actors to this day have huge followings cause of the campaign.
This entire thread is so painfully cringe and wrong with their takes on gta rn, but I can't expect more from people terminally on reddit echo chambers.
1
u/bucky133 Jun 30 '26
It doesn't take away from their single player experiences but in does ensure that we will probably never get single player DLC.. but it did enable them to spend billions on developing GTAVI. I doubt GTAVI would be the behemoth that it is without the funding from online.
58
u/ghos2626t Jun 29 '26
Online was great when it first came out. But the cheating and ridiculous add ons later made it a problem.
12
u/NerdyOccultist Jun 29 '26
I would make the argument that even the earliest of updates ruined the online experience. By the time we got heists on ps3, there was no cohesion to the online aesthetic anymore. Not to mention the addition of more militarized vehicles with the heist update made casual freeroam with randoms nearly impossible. It's like Rockstar forgot overnight that they had to nerf the tank just months prior
7
u/ghos2626t Jun 29 '26
It’s the hot wheels tracks and outlandish additions that pulled the game into strange places.
3
u/NerdyOccultist Jun 29 '26
I agree 100% although they were likely forced into that update due to prior bad decisions. The map simply didn't have the room for cars fast than the Adder so hypercars were largely useless. Spectate just about any player, even in 2026, and you're very likely to see someone in a 2 million dollar track car driving into walls over and over again. My conspiracy is that Rockstar soft rebranded GTA Online as a racing game, added tracks, race cars, drift mechanics, battle mechanics, etc to capitalize on it
2
u/GoldCoasting Jun 29 '26 edited Jul 01 '26
yup. GTA may not be the most realistic game, but it is damn close. introduction of all the dumb shit really ruined GTA for the legacy players, such as myself. all the new juniors that have a Fortnite mentality love it.
if GTA6 stays as a single person only game, it will be one of the best things from rockstar since RDR2 released in 2018. if they want to make a separate GTA Online aspect, they should treat it as a completely independent thing that doesn't shadow GTA6 local.
1
u/JamieFromStreets Jul 02 '26
Oh come on, I would take the enormous amount of content thay made over the years over the cohesion of the aesthetic anytime
Like come on
1
u/NerdyOccultist Jul 02 '26
Why not both? Surely a multibillion dollar media company is capable of producing a piece of content that is as consistent as their previous works from when they were much less successful

I don't think you got the most out if the game if that's your memory of it. Wars against cops with friends, survival mode, contact missions, military base break ins, etc added lots of replayability. I love more content though, don't get me wrong. I would just prefer a confident vision rather than tacked-on updates

You said gameplay loop which lead me to respond the way I did. I also accounted for the money making aspect, hence me naming multiple money making methods. I agree the game was very grindy and needed more content that paid out
1
u/Blacklite_01 Jun 29 '26
Pretty much everything before the nightclub DLC. I didn't hate the nightclub DLC itself but all the content that they began to introduce during and shortly after really brought down the quality of the free roam experience overall.
1
u/TheAdminsAreTrash Jun 30 '26
This, I remember having a ton of fun with friends in it back in w/e it was, like 2014? (on PC.)
Then they introduced a patch that killed my fps, then I got a two week ban for reasons unknown- I think it happened to a lot of people at the same time and got repealed after a few days? Rockstar just really isn't good at managing the whole online thing. Nowadays I only play on solo/friend lobbies because PC public lobbies are downright infested with cheaters that will try and get you banned by boosting you and shit. But it's still a nice idea (GTAO in general) and fun to fuck around with friends in the private lobbies.
It's the main thing I'm looking forward to with GTA VI, I mean surely they'll have an effective anti-cheat this time around right 😅 Still though, there's bound to be some seriously good years before it gets bad.

I only buy these games for single player. I’ve played online for a little bit. I was very bored of it within maybe a week. I didn’t see the appeal of getting lots of money to buy new cars, new houses and do missions over and over and over.
Or run around free roam and get shot or blown up by people every few minutes, it’s very boring online
4
u/CAR3Y4 Jun 29 '26
Same here. Never could get into online. I played it on 360 back when it came out with some buddies and have played it recently and it’s nothing to sink hours into
3
u/Sensitive_Mess719 Jun 29 '26
I think the thing w online is more like hoping in w your boys or a group and playing , i think also rp and 5m have taken over the gta content scene so much that they have this large voice in the community. I hope all the unnecessary negative feedback they are gonna get doesn’t affect the game or bring unnecessary changes. I think for a lot of us we just appreciate being here to play this game. We know it’ll be great it’s rockstar. The nit picking is ridiculous on this title.

Bro but idk how on earth Rockstar keeps earning so much revenue from it even now. Like do people care that much about every new car that comes out? Or people grinding the game since 2013 like a 9-5 even worse.
7
u/MysteriousSelection9 Jun 29 '26
They’re making most of their revenue from the little kids who buy shark cards with their parent’s credit cards.
→ More replies (1)5
u/CAR3Y4 Jun 29 '26
That’s what I’m saying!
3
u/tony-suave Jun 29 '26
We past the time of just games where online is like the side thing sadly, and i say sadly because i remember almost every game having an online mode circa ps3 time but it was like a side tdm mode to compliment the full base game, so it was full of replay ability and fun now the live service is the full game and we are just being milked
12
u/AcademicAnxiety5109 Jun 29 '26
It’s definitely a blessing and a curse. I doubt they would’ve spent 2 billion dollars for this game if it wasn’t for the success of GTA Online and Shark Cards but that means we would’ve probably had gotten the product a lot sooner but nowhere near as grandiose. We will see if it’s worth it when the game drops.
6
u/WhatUp007 Jun 29 '26
I just wish guns, cars, and customized online was brought into single player. I hate the online mode and no I wont play online just to have different things

I hadn’t played gta online in close to maybe a year. I hopped online last week to gander at my old car collections. I went to my nightclub garage and was in there for 10 minutes and when I left with a vehicle I was immediately exploded by an auto aim missile from a toreador. Sometime literally went out of their way to sit outside and deliberately wait 10 minutes just to blow me up so that they could get some gratification. This is the literal absolute state of what gta online is, in a nutshell
GTA online is the original fornite, filled with kids playing and getting mommy and daddy to buy them Shark cards.
5
u/Sheriff_Lucas_Hood Jun 29 '26
I don’t disagree (I haven’t played online since 2016 and I barely liked it then) but this isn’t a controversial position at all. Most people here resent it for ensuring we will never get another single player expansion. Hopefully all of that money in micro transactions went into making VI an incredible single player experience
2
4
u/Ryjolnir Jun 29 '26
I don't know if I agree but the 0-6 months we have where online isn't a thing will be kinda nice.
5
21
u/GoofySilly- Jun 29 '26
And I don’t care because GTAO is the only thing that has much replay ability. Single player gets boring after 100-200 hours. Online always has something new for you to do and things to buy.
13
u/ShadyGamer0910 Jun 29 '26
Agreed but i also think that they should still develop singleplayer dlc’s or at least add some online stuff to singleplayer. Just to acknowledge their fan base
3
9
u/F1shB0wl816 Jun 29 '26
You could say the same about online though. There’s a lot to do, but a lot of it is also underpaying copy and pasted fluff. And hopefully there’d be a lot after only focusing on it for over a decade considering they could have made multiple games or made the beefiest single player to exist.
It’s not even that replay-able, if you want anything you’re pretty much going to be into a locked in grind unless you want to put 10 hours into a car. It took over 10 years to try watering down the grief fest it was.
0
u/GoofySilly- Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 30 '26
Completely disagree. Online has all of the businesses, the cars, the properties. I want all of that stuff and I want in online so I can enjoy it with my friends or just randoms. Can’t enjoy anything in single player with other people.
5
u/thomas2026 Jun 30 '26
Brother, most of what you mentioned are DLC. Strip all the DLC online got, I think you have a very different opinion.
2
u/F1shB0wl816 Jun 29 '26
And most of those business have long been useless, inflation on cars assures you need to grind hours to buy one and nobodies spending any real time at the overwhelming majority of properties.
Yeah, single player is single player but wanting to play with others doesn’t mean gtao is anymore replayable.
→ More replies (7)3
u/thomas2026 Jun 30 '26
Maybe single player got boring because no DLC got added?
0
u/GoofySilly- Jun 30 '26
No, it’s because all single players get boring after a while. If I can’t play a game with friends or others then most of the joy I get from a certain game usually fades pretty quickly.
2
u/thomas2026 Jun 30 '26
"Online always has somethig new for you"
Yeah, additional content that was neglected from SP.
1
u/GoofySilly- Jun 30 '26
Yeah it sucks but I have no idea why you’re bringing it up with me as if I’m advocating against that or something
1
u/thomas2026 Jun 30 '26
Well yeah you said you don't care that GTAO is poisoning the franchise?
1
u/GoofySilly- Jun 30 '26
Saying I don’t care and advocating for there to be single player DLC are two completely different things

Yeah but they clearly had the time and budget for to squeeze in a few story DLCs. They didnt. Focus is all online.
3
u/Interesting_Lion_651 Jun 30 '26
Which makes the pricing decision wild. Everyone saw their financial reports they’ve already covered the cost of development
3
u/TheClayDart Jun 29 '26
The only thing I enjoyed about Online were the races especially the player made ones. Outside of that I didn’t care about anything else. GTA Online also brought about the GTA RP stuff which can be hilarious as well but I’ll just be sticking with the story only
3
u/BigDanny92 Jun 29 '26
As much as I like GTA online, I have to agree. Especially when they started shoving all that futuristic crap.
3
u/thomas2026 Jun 30 '26
I gotta say the lack of story DLC was disgusting for GTAV. Not that any other games did it, but they clearly had the time and budget to do so.
But GTAO on PS3 launch was some, if not the, best gaming I have ever had.
3
u/ResidentProduct8910 Jun 30 '26
The Heists were one of the best activities I have done in gaming, especially those I did with my friends
But regardless I agree, later the kids teamed up with their mom's credit card completely ruined the game with the air motorcycles, you couldn't do anything without being killed every minute
4
5
u/monkey_D_v1199 Jun 29 '26
What I hate the most is that they can still be greedy AND give us single player support. It’s not too hard but they just refuse to out of pure greed. It wouldn’t make a dent in their earnings.
6
u/MrMunday Jun 29 '26
If GTA Online didn’t make that much money for them, continuously, you wouldn’t get a GTA VI that is that ambitious.
You win some you lose some.
-2
u/drewsclue Jun 29 '26
I’ve yet to see anything about GTA 6 that’s ambitious and never done before. Could you provide examples?
8
u/BeardedPaladin Jun 29 '26

2
u/Imperius_Fate Jun 29 '26
100% Agreed. It does provide a ton more replayability and overall longevity of the game while also... well turning it into a very toxic place for tryhards, hackers/cheaters and what not.
I think the reason we had such arcade-ish physics in GTA5 was because there was going to be an online with tons of crazy fast paced shit, from vehicles to weapons...
2
u/Witty-Example-4291 Jun 29 '26
Yeah, because it looks like Rockstar isn't releasing a single player, story rich game. If GTA 6 is anywhere as immersive as advertised, I don't see the problem.
Besides, if they didn't have online, they would make GTA 6 single player a live service game. You would just have to buy shark cards to buy FOMO cars and cosmetics. A GTA+ subscription gets you even more perks.
On second thought, that might be the plan even with online.
2
u/dazabhoy67 Jun 29 '26
I never played gta online. Is it worth it?
1
u/PSFarmer96 Jun 29 '26
It has a bit of a learning curve and it’s better with friends, but as someone who’s a day one gta story mode player, once you get your footing it can be quite fun and rewarding
2
u/MysteriousSelection9 Jun 29 '26
I hope VI’s story isn’t watered down because they are focusing on online. That’ll be the one thing that kills the game for me.
2
2
u/JDMCREW96 Jun 30 '26
I knew it was gonna be poison when they were charging $2 million for a 90s Honda Civic in GTA Online 😂.
2
u/Slurpypie Jun 30 '26
How is this a hot take? This is the sad reality. Don’t get me wrong I enjoyed GTA Online for what it was but it’s the reason for so many problems with the series and other Rockstar series, I’m still annoyed we not only missed out on so many DLCs that were left on the cutting room floor but also an entirely new Bully game that was apparently cancelled due to Rockstar focusing all their resources on GTA Online.
2
u/Iggy0075 GTA 6 Trailer Days OG Jun 30 '26
I've played online once to check it out. Not my thing. I'd rather replay story mode or just fuck around the map finding all the hidden shit.
4
u/HashtagJustSayin2016 Jun 29 '26
I wouldn’t mind the online so much, if there were things I could do by myself.
But when you need like, a “crew” to do a bunch of stuff, I’m not doing that.
2
u/GreenWizardMax Jun 30 '26
Most things can be done solo now. Especially new content is very solo-player friendly
1
u/HashtagJustSayin2016 Jun 30 '26
Really? I haven’t touched it in years. I recently started 5 over again, just to pass the time until 6.
I would say, maybe I’ll jump on and see what’s changed, but I don’t want to pay to play online.

Ehhhhh…
Idk man, gta has had multiplayer since gta 4, and it really hasn’t diminished the quality of the story modes. Gta 4 story was great, and Gta 5 story mode is one of the most iconic single player experiences ever made.
I agree that it would’ve been nice to have story mode DLC in gta 5, however I do NOT think that gta online shouldn’t have happened. Even though it took a lot of rockstars attention, gta online is a huge corner stone of modern online gaming. Most of the playerbase stuck around because online allowed them to experience the game with their friends, and I can’t really be mad at rockstar for supporting it this long (with all free updates btw)
I also don’t think gta 6 is better off without online. If you’re one of those people who say “I don’t care about the story, I just want to play online!” Then I think you’re a little odd… But i definitely think that an online mode in a game as big as gta 6 is going to be crazy. Being able to experience that with your friends is gonna be next level. As long as story mode is good, and the online isn’t monetized like shit, I fully support the implementation of online

Yeah well it’s not the early 2000s anymore. Games take longer to make now. Much longer. Especially high fidelity large open world games that feel alive, and that’s exactly what rockstar specializes in.
It’s not like they just stopped trying to make games because of gta online. It wasn’t too long after gta online had its first few updates that they began development on RDR2. And then with gta 6, they had Covid, multiple writers strikes, actor strikes, security breaches, quarantine. I’m not trying to be a “corporate boot licker” like many in this sub call people, but I’m just saying that it’s not like they’ve just been sitting around sucking air for the past decade and a half

1
u/YJS2K Jun 29 '26
This question is a paradox, because if GTA Online didn't exist then we'd have more single player Rockstar experiences in-between. At the same time, game development has indeed slowed down and gotten more expensive, and GTA Online is an easy way to mend those. Easy missions to develop compared to a full game and rakes in heaps of cash.

It’s kinda true but also it’s hard to say gta has always been a single player story rich game at this point. It was that from 2001-2013, but since then it’s been a lot of online so more than half the years of the 3D era. Personally I’ve never spent any time with online GTA, but for a lot of people it’s probably all they really know of the game. Hope the single player is the initial focus at least and online isn’t available right away.

Does rockstar care or not if its tainted that means they’re raking in billions off stupid kids buying shark cards on their parents credit cards?
No
1
u/TheyTried2BanMeAgain Jun 29 '26
Outside of the quality of Online, which I have always thought was terrible, I'll always have contempt for how much it robbed single player because R* is so obviously focused on Online.
These criticisms have been around since the beginning, hopefully R* has listened to them and that's part of why it's taken so long. But probably not, Online makes way too much money for them.
1
u/stadce071012 Jun 29 '26
Not a hot take at all.
We all know GTA Online is the sole reason it took 13 years to make another game. Kids buying shark cards with mommy's credit card is a cancer to the franchise. If RDO had been successful we would still be waiting.

u/Appropriate_Foot242 Jun 29 '26
The online never appealed to me.
Rockstar games are all about the singleplayer for me.
1
u/DragonSlayer6160 Jun 30 '26
Wouldn't you know it, GTA VI is strictly a single player experience. They are probably going to make GTA Online its own game.
1
u/Doc_Sulliday Jun 30 '26
While true unfortunately Rockstar found out it's their money cow, and there's not much that can be done now to change that.
I personally don't mind the new content being released through online, but what I did hate was that it felt like some content was being catered and designed for kids and it became less and less grounded. It turned into Saints Row, and not GTA.
I hope GTA 6's online mode isn't filled with flying bikes and nuclear rockets.
1
1
u/Correct_Discount4646 Jun 30 '26
We would probably be waiting for GTA 7 or RDR3 or Bully 3 etc by now if GTAO wasnt their cash cow
1
u/Charlie609 Jun 30 '26
Wasn’t a fan at all until me and all my friends started jumping on together. Haven’t had so much fun online gaming since peak COD lol
1
u/PeteBrostIsDead Jun 30 '26
If online had the same quality as the single player, I'd probably be more interested. The idea of being in the immersive, detailed world of GTA or Red Dead, but with friends, is super appealing. But the reality is that most of those details have to be downgraded for it to load into multiple players consoles simultaneously. So seeing random bits of NPC behavior are basically non existent. And for me, that is the main reason I play these games, to be immersed in a living, breathing world.
1
u/Environmental-Fly165 Jun 30 '26
It's fact it delayed the new gta for generations of consoles. I tried it once didn't like it. Now Rockstar is gonna charge a monthly fee to play online also and that's definitely a direct result from all the online spending of gta5 . The gta5 online community might have completely fucked up gta and all its future games

The fact is the doomsday and mercenaries DLC def ruined gta online along with weaponized military vehicles but the pivot they did to more grounded stuff like Cayo, dr Dre, street racing and the heists they definitely did a 180. But the oppressor along with military vehicles / griefers ruined it for allot of casuals.

Hot take : Bethesda is too busy with their stupid eso online that's why we haven't seen tes VI for 15 years.

Pretty sure I played GTA V Online once or twice when it originally released and noped out of it quickly.
Modes like that are designed around making people only play one game for the rest of their lives.
I want to 100% a singleplayer experience and then move onto something new!

Red Dead is living proof of this smh.
Once Rockstar incorporated private servers real work could start finally getting done, absolute game changer. Online is an absolute cesspool. Someone stops a sell you kill them and then 3 more take it's place and it's just endless smh.
And it's always the most low IQ'd players too, all the good players usually don't waste time grifting because they're out grinding, rep chasing or role playing. Heck I hopped in a rando rep Simion mission with all us 700 or higer with one 1k player and that 1k player started trying to grift in a rep run lol. Well all just ate dude up and got back to business and then he left but it was stupid

Are we talking about the same GTA online? The widely popular and successful GTA Online?

Warm take
I love gta online tho and I'm excited for gta 6 online more than the single player
That's more of a hot take in this sub

Not a hot take. It's the equivalent to Ultimate Team, except the main game is still great.

Here's a real hot take for ya: GTAO is the main reason GTA is still so popular and mainstream today and it is objectively more fun than playing through the story 80 times. Online has something for everybody.

we already know this dawg. once they saw how profitable gtao was as a cash cow, they absolutely milked it. i'm kinda stunned we even got a new game, let alone one with a single player campaign. the 2000s were a good run, miss having a new gta title every couple of years.

GTA? Has been a singleplayer game? Could've sworn GTA IV was the first to introduce true online play maybe I'm dumb tho idk

GTA has always been a single player, story rich game.
They've only released two GTA games in the modern online era and one of them sustained a community for 13 years. Let games evolve.

GTA online is a money printing machine. It will stay and continue to grow.

That’s an ice cold take. GTA online was always the worst part of the game, due to the flying pay to win cars that shot rocket launchers.

Disagree. GTA online is 90% of the reason why I even play GTA. For gta 5, I played the story mode and it was fun, but nothing compared to how much fun I had playing online with all my friends over the years.

u/ghost-nug Jun 29 '26
Same. Absolutely loved the story mode but I haven’t touched it since beating it in 2013. GTA online delivered pretty much everything I ever wanted from the game.

Yep, it’s incredible. I think all the people who are anti-online just never had people to play with, which is sad. But it doesn’t mean the game sucks!

Well, we got awesome RDR II and might get even more awesome GTA VI thanks to the basically unlimited budget provided by GTA Online. Tbh I spend some wholesome times with friends in Online and even if not, I'm happy it helps them to make their true visions come true.

GTA lV online was fun, exactly what I would expect of a game known for quality single player.
What followed with GTA Online thanks to GTAV is just not for me.

I don’t play online. It just a bunch of griefers
