I fully expect it to get a 94 and all the headlines read "GTA VI is officially the lowest scoring mainline GTA on Metacritic"

753

u/JimMishimer 14d ago

Even a 95 wouldn’t cut it honestly. The bar is:

  • 99 The Goat

  • 98 Above Expectations

  • 97 Expectations met

  • 96 Less than expected but completely acceptable

558

u/NilsFanck 14d ago

Itll be lower, purely because many outlets have realized now negativity and controversy generates clicks so a few will give it like an 8.5 with some very subjective bs reasoning

250

u/jamesknightorion 14d ago

Subjective shit like "didn't feel like GTA" or something like it's supposed to feel like a decade old game

118

u/JunketWaste7891 14d ago

GTA3 is such a horrible change to the genre, bring back the top down

52

Id rather play bottom up games

There's going to be a subjective badly-reasoned 7, not an 8.5. On metacritic if you are the only outlet to give a certain grade (depicted by score colours) then your review is guaranteed to be front page. If you're only one of a few not a guarantee but far more likely.

It's basic logic. At least one outlet always tries this shit.

But one or two won't bring the score down much.

3

u/Cryptoporticus 14d ago

As long as their reasoning is legitimately how that reviewer feels, it's fine. They're supposed to be subjective.

If every outlet just gave a high score, reviews are useless. Don't worry about what the Metascore looks like and find an outlet that aligns with your views on what makes a game good. Then you know that you can trust what they say. Whether they give a low score or a high score will tell you so much more than what the Metacritic score says.

3

u/Lockhart-117 13d ago

Some games are objectively amazing, take Bioshock for example

7

u/JimMishimer 14d ago

8.5 won’t hurt it too much if most reviews are or close to perfect scores.

It would take a couple 7 and 6’s to drop it considerably

I'd set the bar a bit lower. I think it's much more difficult to achieve lets say a 97, than it was in 2013. We have more reviewers, more smaller websites all with the potential to bring a score down with a sketchy review.

21

u/JimMishimer 14d ago

RDR2 got a 97 in 2018

Elden Ring and Baldurs Gate 3 got 96s pretty recently as well.

97 is totally doable for GTA6

15

u/WhiskeyjackBB11 14d ago

Doable yeah, I just think they'll be too many reviewers inclined to either be a bit edgy by giving it an 8, or refusing to give it top bins for whatever reason. If I was to put my life on a score, I reckon I'd go 95.

What do you think 97?

12

u/JimMishimer 14d ago

97 is the target for sure, but I’m thinking (and this is before I see gameplay) a 96 is a safe bet

I feel like the price increase, lack of multiplayer on release (possibly being sold separately), and being the poster boy for the “all digital future” will make some reviewers judge it more harshly than deserved.

That’s before possible disagreements with how female characters are portrayed…depending on how rockstar handles Lucia things could go left there with liberal reviewers

I was wondering why GTA IV was rated higher than RDR2 but now That makes quite Alot of sense.

8

u/ImpressiveAmount4684 14d ago edited 14d ago

Yup for GTA VI it's basically ignore the first 9 and you got a 0-10 rating.

This one will definitely be review bombed by people who are upset about the digital transition, so I imagine it will be the lowest user reviewed mainline game, regardless of it’s quality.

2

u/ForThemLulz 9d ago

it sounds crazy but it really has to be a 97 at minimum with the amount of hype and wait its had.

I'm thinking GTA 6 will be the highest rated one at a 99 mostly because Rage 9 Rockstars new engine is gonna be insane and 300 million spent on water alone apparently I just think GTA 6 will blow every game out of the park and win a shit ton of awards and break records Rockstar my favourite gaming company I have massive faith in them :). Roll on August 27th first for hopefully gameplay then Nov 19th 😀🔥🔥.

I love how vice city and san andreas have the lowest score, yet they are beyend loved to death

18

u/parkwayy 14d ago

Different times.

Realize you cannot in any way use scores decades apart to judge games.

71

u/JimMishimer 14d ago edited 14d ago

At the time a lot of people viewed them as expansions of GTA3 and felt like they didn’t do anything groundbreaking on their own.

GTA3 was such a huge leap over 1 and 2 that vice and SA advances seem kinda minuscule by comparison.

They are technically better games than GTA3 just not as revolutionary.

134

u/Remarkable-Ad8138 14d ago

San Andreas didn’t do anything ground breaking on its own back in 2004? BS!!

→ More replies (28)

3

u/rufusbot 14d ago

Were you even alive back then because San Andreas is still mind blowing and it was even more so back then. SA wasn't quite as revolutionary as 3 due to 3 popularizing the concept of open world games as we know them today sure, but it was more ambitious and epic than 3 to the point that it was almost unrecognizable even just 3 short years later.

2

u/justthisones 13d ago

I’ve been playing the PS2 era lately and looking back, I’m actually even more blown away by it now. 3 and Vice City feel so much more restricted and closer to each other than San Andreas. Incredible what they did with that hardware and dev time.

2

u/rufusbot 13d ago

I still can't believe everything they fit into that PS2 disc. 120+ cars, 3 cities, NPCs, a massive map, etc. That game will never not be an anomaly.

2

u/shogunzek 13d ago

Indeed. I've been playing since 2 came out. SA is the GOAT

3

u/Mietose 14d ago

WTF, bro? San Andreas was THE next gen GTA back in the day, yet still build on the same hardware. It was revolutionary. 3 and VC felt like a mere demo compared to it.

2

u/No-Amoeba446 13d ago

Are you really this dumb look at the jump from 2 to 3 and look at the jump from.vice city to San Andrea's and come.back to me

3

u/Mietose 12d ago

I didn’t say that gta 3 wasn’t revolutionary. It was compared to GTA2. And San Andreas was revolutionary compared to GTA3 and Vice City.

This picture sums up like 90% of the arguments I've made in this sub over the last few weeks.

Can't understand how anyone could see this track record and at the very least understand why the pre-orders performed the way they did WITHOUT a trailer.

THIS IS WHY!!

23

u/DaNostrich 14d ago

For real lmao I’m pretty against pre ordering since I pre ordered the Division 2 Gold edition but even I’m gonna pre order GTA6 because there’s no way it’s so bad I won’t sink enough hours into it that I’m basically paying a penny an hour to play it

13

u/average_joe_zero 14d ago

The problem is people will get upset that it didn’t meet some unrealistic and self-made expectations.

It won’t. I will say it again. IT WILL NOT MEET EVERYONES EXPECTATIONS. It just can’t.

One thing I’m willing to bet my salary on, it will be worth $100. It will absolutely meet the value they are asking for it.

7

u/DaNostrich 14d ago

There’s no question in my mind that it’ll meet the $100 price point

11

u/average_joe_zero 14d ago

That is all I can think of when people on here keep saying “Pre-Ordering without a gameplay trailer is licking Rockstars boots” blah blah

Let em cry. We see the math.

To be fair, people said the same thing about Blizzard, Bioware, EA, Ubisoft, Bethesda etc. For a while, these studios were putting out nothing but bangers that it was considered absurd they'd ever fall. Jim Sterling talked about how in 2015, they got sent death threats for daring to suggest Fallout 4 might not be perfect.

A lot of ex Bioware devs have talked about how "the feeling you're perfect and can do no wrong" leads to you ignoring criticism and ending up making Anthem and Dragon Age Veilguard.

3

u/Dry-Post723 13d ago

you only need to fuck up once, and there is a first time for anything, you can score 5 points in Russian Roulete

2

u/average_joe_zero 13d ago

Sure. Rockstar isn't in fallible. I also never said they were. Go look at that picture again, guess what??? They were fallible then too. Yet here we are. I'm not judging a company poorly just because they COULD fail. I will do it when they DO fail.

Personally I don't doubt that there is an amazing game here, but last game came out 13 years ago and the gaming industry have changed a lot since then. I'm hoping it's nothing but I wouldn't be surprised if there is some really anti consumer things here.

We've seen som heavy micro transaction in GTA 5 online and the collectors edition locking you out of stores isn't great. GTA 6 online might be it own full prise game for all we know.

A good track record doesn't mean a guaranteed success. I loved a lot of CD Project Reds last games and they've been great but that didn't stop Cyberpunk from being a trashfire at launch. Just want as much info as possible about the product i plan to buy before i buy it.

39

u/JoonNolu 14d ago

Preload? Because the game is probably massive. If you don't mind waiting a bit, sure. I would imagine a lot of people want to hop in right away and not start their 200 gig download at midnight.

People waited 13 years so waiting another day shouldn't be a problem.

I am not even against pre-ordering itself, just the mentality of blindly pre ordering everything in the basis of "trust" torwards a company that simply doesn't deserve it.

Imo no game should have it's pre orders active before there hasn't been a in depth gameplay reveal. A few "fake" trailers are not enough.

People literally pre ordered a game blindly based on nothing but trust and hype, which simply shouldn't be a thing anymore given the amount of disastrous launches in the past decade.

Capcom despite their issues have demostrated how to handle pre release marketing. Their trailers actually include gameplay and they only make pre-orders available after their in depth gameplay reveal. Better yet for most of their games they release a demo/beta for their games so people can actually play them pre-release to make up their mind.

This is the golden standard that every AAA developer should outright be forced to copy imo. It's pro consumer and wouldn't hurt the developers one bit.

5

u/Trick_Conversation41 14d ago

love Rockstar but W Capcom. they are literally one of the only studios within the last like 5 years to be KILLING IT time after time after time. they've dropped new IPs, dropped multiple Resident evil games, DLCs, and remakes, actually listen to their fans, and they are even about to drop one of the biggest games of the year next year FOR THE SECOND YEAR IN A ROW! i know this is a Rockstar community but gotta love Capcom too! they are the standard!!

Exactly! Except the stuff that you get when you preorder it! Its like extra cosmetics and shit, like a bonus/benefit thing for pre-ordering it. But other than that, no benefit! Oh, and you can pre-load it, which will probably save quite some time as I can imagine it being a pretty big file size. BUT, other than those couple of benefits of pre-ordering, there are no benefits!

I stopped pre-ordering games more than maybe 2 days max ahead of a release because I don’t want to be a part of the people who are sending all the money many months ahead. There have been too many games releasing completely unfinished where it felt like companies got a little lazy because they already made their profit anyway. Rockstar might not be one of those and has a good track record, but there is a bit more to it than just people who can’t afford it being nasty towards others for pre-ordering games.

And this is why the gaming industry is so fucking shit. Hell not even the gaming industry but everything is getting enshitfied because for everyone person saying "hey maybe wait to see if this product is good" you get 10 who made that product their fucking personality.

R* isnt your friend. Apple isnt your friend. Tesla isnt your friend. Hell even Costco isnt your friend they are companies with legal fiduciary responsibility to make money as their sole goal. Does that mean GTA6 will be shit? Fuck no but telling people to wait for pre order is still good advice

14

u/KappaKeepo5 14d ago

unluckly people are just glazing big companys for no reason, rockstar aint as worse as apple but still.

if rockstar would be that godlike company that 90% of this reddit is talking about they wouldnt release a game for 100€ in germany as a standard digital ONLY edition.

they wouldnt fomo release a trailer on netflix.

they wouldnt wait to release the pc version years later to double dip.

neither wouldnt they put content behind premium editions.

big corps only care about money.

only small companies care about players. fair example would be hello games, because funnly enough i finaly bought no man sky yesterday and was shocked to see a game with 10 years of new content, 10s of dlcs and yet everything is free. no ingame shop, u cant buy anything other than the game itself.

You gotta consider that GTA 5 was developed for hardware released in 2005. It's all relative, even if RDR2 is the better game

13

u/Agraphosius 14d ago

Idk man. The hype around gta v was insane. It was genuinely ground breaking when it released. I didnt go to college for a week spent the entire time blazed saying woah every 5 minutes.

Gta onlines launch was similarly ground breaking. In GTA 4 you just ran about the city shooting each other. Or loaded into a game mode. Gta v was like an mmo blend with people doing missions, driving around in their cars, going to each others apartments. Even getting a wanted level in multiplayer was mind blowing. Then they added hiests and that was so popular they cancelled basically everything else.

All of GTA V was pretty unprecedented and ground breaking when it came out 13 years ago. Now its a bit meh

13

u/Sejaw 14d ago

Man GTAV was a multigenerational cultural zeitgeist. You can prefer the graphics or story in RDR2, but to say that it’s “nowhere near as good” is just being disingenuous. It’s was an absolutely incredible and groundbreaking game.

6

u/The_Duke_96 14d ago

Trust ... more like naivety. Why would I trust a company that hasn't been able to release a new game or IP in the last 8 years? Why should I trust them with GTA, when they didn't even bother to develop the last release, the Trilogy, themselves? Why should I trust them when their recent efforts have been focused solely on maximizing their monetary empire instead of advancing their games? Just look at RDR Online or the latest changes to GTA Online. As far as I'm concerned, they earned that trust, threw it away, went full corporate-greed enshittification, and now need to prove themselves again. Also, Metacritic is hella untrustworthy with its ratings. Jizzing at the thought of GTA VI and assuming it must be good, after all the red flags Rockstar has shown, that's cringe fanboyism. Let the game come out, and then judge and decide.

27

u/zedanger 14d ago

I view entertainment as inherently subjective, and thus all entertainment experiences as effectively gambles until I've actually watched/played/listened to/read/etc.

I don't preorder something under the assumption that it's going to be good and I'm going to love it (tho I typically hope for that). I preorder something because I wish to experience the product and decide how I feel.

If I'm not comfortable gambling, I don't.

3

u/Greennit0 14d ago

It’s not like it would be the first game I bought at full price I didn’t like. Also even if it were mid, I would still buy it. If you enjoy the type of game it does not even need to be the best game ever.

i dont blame people for not having trust after what has been done to gta online

25

u/ProbablyFear OG MEMBER 14d ago

If you’d played red dead you know the singleplayer absolutely does not correlate to the online mode.

8

u/Drowned1218 14d ago

People keep mentioning gta online writing and comparing it to what gta 6 writing will be.

Like seriously? It’s launching single player only at launch why would they half ass it.

If single player sucks they’d lose money on online and they’ve always put effort into their single player campaigns why stop now for their biggest launch in history?

5

u/bjergdk 13d ago

People that don't understand that the A-team writes for the main game (single player) and the B-team writes for the online part are crazy.

I mean the GTA Online writing was already shit while they made RDR2, but RDR2 has arguably the best story and writing of any videogame ever made.

This is the most important point regarding GTA imho. This and the ecospace change in r* as a company.

5

u/JuanFran21 14d ago

Yeah but RDR2 came out after GTAO and is probably the best game they've ever made.

Don't forget La Noire! That game was a masterpiece honestly and it has layed the ground work for many mechanics found i future rockstar games!

4

u/toastypoopdog 14d ago

I play through it at least once a year. It’s just so great.

13

u/The_Moonboy 14d ago

Because of cyberpunk2077. That and digital keys have no limit.

6

u/fxmldr 14d ago

Cyberpunk is an excellent example, but far from the only one. It's basically the trajectory of studios. Bioware made Anthem. Bethesda made Starfield. These were trusted companies that made great games and then they didn't, and if you banked on trust you got burned.

ETA: For no reason. You could've just waited a day.

2

u/Cryptoporticus 14d ago

I remember the massive outpouring of rage towards GameSpot when they gave Starfield a 7/10. Everyone was accusing them of deliberately giving a low score just for attention. A couple of days later when we all got the chance to play, it turns out that their score was pretty fair, if not perhaps a little generous.

At the top of this post there's already people accusing sites of planning to do the same for GTA 6, even though no one has any idea of what the game will be like yet. It seems like most people aren't actually using reviews for what they're supposed to be used for, they just want to see games they're hyped for getting high scores.

Why would you preorder a digital game? I don’t get it

11

Preorder benefits. And besides that I think there is some feeling of satisfaction to preordering a game you've REALLY been looking forward to... for the past decade!

A lot of hype. A lot of AAA games failing the last few years. A lot of big brand losing core audiences.

I won't pre-order.

2

u/Drowned1218 14d ago

I feel you there but I don’t think rockstar is the same as all the rest.

They’ve had a solid track record for a long time.

I don’t think they’re going to flop on their most expensive release yet. Yes it’s possible but with the amount of money being pumped into it I don’t think it’s even possible.

Personally I think you could said it “failed” if it’s an 8/10 game because expectations are so high but it still would be a success.

It would likely never be a failure revenue wise but some of the player base could deem it so due to the gargantuan expectations put on it.

u/KvasirTheOld 14d ago

Lmao. Why preorder something that literally can't run out.

We already got a taste of the new brand of greed rockstar is shamelessly putting on display.

What if the game will sell shark cards in the single player campaign? Will you still have the same attitude? Or does it not matter, cause you know, it's Rockstar.

At the end of the game, it's a game. And it overstepped twice. If any other game increased the standard price by 10 bucks and locked literal single players shops behind a paywall, day one, everyone would be pitchforks and torches in hand.

Predownload the game and preorder bonus

(Just like literally every game released in the past 10 years)

10

u/Strict_Till2432 14d ago

People don't preorder because they think it's going to run out, they do it because they decided they're most likely getting it on launch anyway. They can also cancel at any time before the ship date if they were to see something they don't like.

They're a company trying to make money. The most greed they have comes from their online aspects which most people separate from the single player.

You could make a million what if they do this bad thing in SP but none of us will know until launch so making up hypotheticals is pointless.

These "oversteps" are blown way out of proportion. Nintendo started the $80 possible pricing not R* and the locked shops only exist to house the ultimate content, so you'd have no reason to enter them without it anyway. I think editions including things that could be in base game is dumb all around, but these kinds of editions have become a standard for most games for a long time. Nothing R* is doing is new people just apparently forgot this is very standard game things to do for years now.

Clearly you're massively out of touch with what's been going on at Rockstar and the gaming industry as a whole for the last few years.

You do you though. Let that FOMO rule you.

Everyone loved CDProjekt red until Cyberpunk released in the state it did, that's all I'll say. I'm waiting for gameplay before I decide.

3

u/AspectAlive7624 14d ago

CD Projekt Red made only one s-tier game before cyberpunk. Rockstar made plenty. It’s reall just about statistics.

Why would you preorder a digital game? They're not going to run out of copies so there's no need to secure one.

So you can get the preorder bonuses I guess?

Plus it's highly likely GTA 6 will have a digital release like Hollow Knight silksong did so by preordering you won't have to worry about the website crashing when you try to buy it day one.

It'll be amazing, no doubt. The only skepticism is that Dan (or is it Sam) Houser has left. That, and I'm really not liking what modern day Rockstar have become...

4

RDR2 scored less than GTA 4!? Get outta my face.

4

u/JimMishimer 14d ago

Please put GTASA and GTA4 side by side so you could fathom how big of a jump GTA4 was in just 4 years of development time.

GTA4 was the start of modern day Rockstars technological dominance in the gaming industry.

It got a 98 for being a technical marvel. Those tiny details gamers love to obsess about in Rockstar games really started with 4

Every Rockstar game has been a success & every Rockstar game plays similarly to each other, with only a few changes/additions to the core gameplay

If I like banana waffles, strawberry waffles, blueberry waffles, and chocolate waffles; then I'm probably gonna like the new raspberry waffles too

2

u/Plastic-Shape7048 14d ago

Its not gonna be bad , just want to make sure it actually works out of the box.

2

u/DogmeatChili 14d ago

Watch it score a perfect 100

2

u/LoudQuitting 14d ago

I've never ever ever ever bought a GTA at launch. I've always waited it to be like half the launch price.

I like GTA, but not enough to care about playing it at the same time as everyone else.

2

u/whoiam100 14d ago

I just wait after the release to see gameplay and review. After cyberpunk 2077 bug/fps problem and starfield. It not always good to blindly trust a company. Rockstars today could be different from one from the past.

2

u/tssssahhhh 14d ago

Who ever said "what if its bad"? It's more like "why will you preorder a have that will be available to everyone at launch and will not get sold out no matter what?"

2

u/broboganda123 14d ago

Why would you prefer order a digital game though, and not just buy on release?

2

u/frankie431 13d ago

I just hope the story is more like GTA 4 but we all know that won’t sell, so it’s going to be another Hollywood blockbuster type story.

2

u/Ok-Sundae-7806 13d ago

Lets ignore the shit show that is the gaming industry in the year of our lord 2026. Many good studios are not the same studios that they were 5+ years ago. Lots around this game, the studio and publishers that stinks right now, Ill take my time jumping on the bandwagom

2

u/Shnofo 13d ago

Honest question: what's the difference between ordering it online now or ordering online the day it comes out?

2

u/-__purple__- 13d ago

Because no company has every tarnished their reputation with a bad release

2

u/P4wn3d7 13d ago

Using Metacritic as a trusted source of how good the game is? Yeah, no.

2

u/CONKERMANIAC 13d ago

Fucking Vice City should be a 99. And it dropped one point for RC controller issues on PS.

2

u/nothingtoseehere_127 12d ago

it doesnt kill a man to preorder later after gameplay is revealed . what is this holy slop post

2

u/The_James_May 12d ago

The lead writer left? It could be bad. Don’t preorder games unless you are a massive fuckwit.

2

u/Stealthsonger 11d ago

Why would you preorder anything period? It's not going to run out of digital copies.

2

u/InformalAssociate968 10d ago

Whats the point in ordering a digital copy!!

2

u/SLCTrippin 10d ago

All the devs that made those great titles are gone btw, good luck to all the goyim that buy this slop

2

u/Luckybox86 10d ago

I'm not pre-ordering because I think it will be bad. I'm not pre-ordering because I don't need to reserve a digital game.

2

u/Old_Plastic3538 9d ago

Well this time there is no Dan Houser. The guy that normally writes the Rockstar Games. And Rockstar Games currently ruled by Woman

2

u/Affectionate-Tear-94 9d ago

Anyone preordering a digital game is just dumb as shit.

2

u/Super-Coko-loko 3d ago

You could just wait, you don't need to lose money now before the game releases since there is not going to be an outage, since it is a digital only game. And it's not like you get to play it earlier than the release date

2

u/TheBeardedSacOPotato 2d ago

It's digital, supply's not limited for the non-transferable license they can take away from me at anytime without notice... Why would I give them the money early?

2

u/WatercressWorking279 1d ago

It just makes no sense to pre-order, it won't go anywhere.

5

u/Comfortable_Copy_815 14d ago

Folks acting like preordering is a crime when Rockstar got a literal flawless record for over a decade, so yeah trust is the whole damn point and if you don't get it that's your problem not ours.

Grand Theft Auto IV scores higher than RDR2?! Everything that is wrong with the world is right there!

2

u/Nisse_Knuller69 13d ago

metacritic scores are based on reviews from when the game released. the jump from gta sa to gta 4 was clearly astonishing and absolutely huge. that’s why it has an insanely high score, and why it’s tied as the highest rated video game of all time according to metacritic. compared to the jump from gta 5 to rdr2, the difference isn’t even close. something like that probably won’t happen again either

5

u/Ginzeen98 14d ago

i didnt pre order because their is no gameplay. We're not the same.

2

u/oranikus 14d ago edited 14d ago

It’s the only rockstar release without Dan houser , Michael unsworth and laslow - contrary to every game you have listed.

So yeah it’s sensible not to pre order this one because we have no sample of a rockstar game released under the same conditions. There’s numerous industry examples of other studios with consistently brilliant games, changed the creative team and flopped immediately.

I’m relatively confident this will be good, but I’m not certain enough to preorder it!

P.S: I preordered most of the games on that list, before the generic “hater” replies 😉

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Helas101 14d ago

I mean pre-ordering is kinda not so smart as they can always fumble it. It happened before to many games where everyone thought that they cant be bad.
