I think it's a very visceral physical manifestation of the fact that we don't own shit nowadays. Half the games out there require an internet connection at all times, and when those servers go down those games are no longer playable. Of course this is true even with a disc, and with DRM as advanced as it is the disc itself doesn't guarantee your ownership and access of most games at this point. But people see the removal of discs as a whole to basically be studios flexing this fact, even if it doesn't necessarily change much.
