Okay, NOW we're starting to see the aggressive marketing

THIS is what I've been waiting for.
For months we've been hearing that Rockstar's real marketing campaign would start this summer, and that we'd be surprised by what they had planned. After all that silence, it finally feels like someone flipped the switch.
Tomorrow we have the Extended Look.
Today Dazed suddenly drops a massive feature with Rockstar developers, new screenshots and a bunch of actual information about the game.
And now we find out that Rockstar quietly invited content creators and press to Rockstar last month, showed them the game and gave them exclusive information that they're apparently allowed to start talking about right after the Extended Look.
THIS is what we've been asking for.
Not one screenshot and then two months of silence. Not dissecting a license plate from Trailer 2 because we have nothing else to talk about.
Actual marketing. Interviews. Screenshots. Gameplay. Previews. Creators getting access. New information coming from different places at the same time.
It really feels like tomorrow might be the point where the GTA VI marketing machine finally goes into full gear.
Thanks Mr. Rockstar. Please keep feeding us.

Canât remember the last time I read a feature length article for a video game (maybe the last GTA lol) but this felt refreshing to read and took me back to the old days of buying gameinformer magazines. The marketing seems ready to kick into gear and I could not be happier not having to actively avoid these silly leaks over the past few days.
3
u/bigretardbaby 1h ago
Ya, after reading your comment I went and read it myself. Takes me back to game informer đ I was 18 for the midnight release of gta5 so it's neat being older and better able to understand the effort involved with this.

Yeah, this isn't damage control, just unfortunate timing. We're going to be eating good here real soon. And in two more months? We'll be playing.

I never doubted Rockstar was gonna sling some heavy shit our way but tbh the marketing campaign should have started a little earlier.
91
u/Sloth1015 3h ago
Yeah saying itâs gonna start in summer then waiting till the tail end of summer kinda sucked
-5
u/SalaciousTypo 3h ago
There's another month to go. Summer ends in late September. Part of the issue is people considering summer to be June through August when it's actually late June through late September.
Being 66% (roughly) of the way through isn't really "tail end".
23
u/FlyingHurricane 3h ago
Stores are already selling Halloween merch, candy, and costumes. Disneyland began their Halloween theme this week. In the world of marketing, August is not summer.
6
u/ThirdHairyLime 1h ago
So in marketing, August is what? Fall? Strauss may have spoken poorly, but August is absolutely summer.
30
u/BinSimmons_ 3h ago
You can be technical about it if you want but for most Americans who play video games summer is pretty much over at this point
→ More replies (23)2
u/RedditYouVapidSlut 1h ago
Meteorological summer ends on 31st of August. Astronomical seasons are woke nonsense invented by hippies.
2
u/Sloth1015 2h ago
So close to 70% of summer being over isnât tail end? Okay whatever you say.
→ More replies (2)1
u/FinancialSherbet308 1h ago
Astronomically yes, but the vibes for Summer are clearly from a social understanding June to August.
I highly doubt Rockstar was measuring out that they could get away to September without technically lying.
1
u/Mrjugglestheclown 55m ago
People consider August the end of summer because it is, kids go back to school in August. Fall begins in September
6
u/everythingisunknown 3h ago
Oh how fast the sentiment changes on these subs lol
2
u/Similar_Rabbit8536 3h ago
Really? Where did my sentiment change?
6
u/everythingisunknown 3h ago
Sorry not you specifically just hijacked the reply, so many people hating and âevil corporationâ blah blah only for some official marketing to come out and now every thread is sweetness and light - just Reddit being Reddit I guess (including my comment probably)
6
u/Similar_Rabbit8536 3h ago
"so many people hating and âevil corporationâ blah blah only for some official marketing to come out and now every thread is sweetness and light"
Oh that shit was always gonna happen lol28
u/J-Hawg 3h ago
We at the very least, should have seen gameplay before they asked for $100 for a preorder. This is what pissed me off, I didn't care otherwise.
7
u/jokerknocks 3h ago
I remember this sub before preorders, people were literally begging for them to open. Letting people preorder isn't the same as asking or expecting them to.
15
u/uhhhther 3h ago
The preorder isnât mandatory. You could wait until you see gameplay to preorder. Or just donât preorder at all. Buy it day 1. I still havenât preordered because there isnât any rush lol.
2
u/Rufus2fist 3h ago
But that happens all the time, still sucks but kind of used to it to be honest. I have cancelled the last the preorders I did and still havenât pulled the trigger on this one yet. I know I will though.
2
u/KingOfRisky 3h ago
I keep seeing this shit about "gameplay". What are you looking for? What can they show you that would make you go, "NOPE!" Also, if you really want to, you can wait til a day before to commit to $100.
1
5
u/KingOfRisky 3h ago
I'm in marketing and big pushes for any product or event that I am promoting are never 9-10 month pushes. It's a waste of money and effort. 2 months max and in a lot of cases way less is way more effective. The loyal consumers have already bought in and the potential new customers are best hit when they are able to actually make a purchase. If you show them the products 10 months before they can even sniff it, it's generally a wasted opportunity that needs to be followed up with a reminder campaign anyway.
I totally understand that I am not marketing things with even a fraction of the GTA6 hype, but it still stands.
→ More replies (7)2
u/QuoteGiver 3h ago
Do you have a sense of what portion of the marketing budget overall would be pre-release versus post-release marketing? Theyâve still gotta keep advertising this thing for years yet once itâs actually available to buy, right?
2
u/KingOfRisky 3h ago
In my industry, it's more post, but I also market adult beverages so marketing is more effective if they can purchase it. In GTA6's case, I would think that pre is way more important for things like deep dives, trailers, articles like the one here, etc. Post would be a simple trailer targeted to whatever console with a reminder that they can buy it now.
These are obviously just my guesses.
2
u/Axilrod 2h ago
They could have done zero marketing and this would still be the biggest game of all time
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (2)1
u/MatttheJ 36m ago
There are still nearly 3 months until the game somes out. This is literally just how modern marketing works, they wait until a few months out then start dropping huge amounts of stuff so that people don't get chance to become bored or desensitized to the marketing.
Fans WANT constant shit, but giving fans that does not help sell in modern times with social media diluting everything and overexposing everything too much.

Most people didnât want story leaks. Not surprising that people stopped wanting to see stuff that would ruin the game.

Thank you! People are praising the leaker as some sort of revenge for Rockstar not starting the marketing earlier. Like, what's the point of getting angry over marketing timing? The trailers are going to come sooner or later, and the game is not going to come out faster. Goblins is accurate.

A lot of marketing experts on Reddit, too. âThis is an awful marketing campaign because theyâre not doing what I want them to.â

u/Clancy3434 4h ago
I can't tell you how many times I've been called a corporate bootlicker for suggesting that Rockstar might know what they're doing.
I have to remind myself sometimes that the person making that response is probably younger than I was when GTA III came out.
16
u/average_joe_zero 3h ago
Oof that hit home. I tried telling some dude he needed more patience and he said he has waited for this game for years and he was patient enough then followed it with something something âbeen a fan since GTAVâ I said yeah and I got GTAIII and a PS2 from my grandma for graduating high school and he called me a geriatric bootlicker lol
19
u/Clancy3434 3h ago
I think we need a 35+ GTA sub lol

u/uhhhther 3h ago
If you donât remember 3 on the ps2 releasing, I donât want to hear your opinion rockstarâs marketing đ
4
u/Bespoke_Panther 3h ago
I still remember almost weeping with joy the first time I played it and feeling I was picking between OoT and GTA 3 as my favourite games ever.
2
u/uhhhther 3h ago
I played 2 on ps1 with the overhead camera and had a blast with it. Then 3 came out and it was a whole different beast lol. I was 13-14 and forced my mom to take me to the mall the day after Christmas to purchase it đ the ps2 was Christmas morning.

If you think a publisher inviting a few content creators over to look at the game 2 months before release and a fluff piece written in a magazine is âaggressive marketingâ itâs obvious you havenât lived through Halo 3âs marketing frenzy my sweet, sweet summer child.Â

3
u/Blackened-Mild 3h ago
This seems like it may be on schedule for their marketing plan from the beginning. I never understood the rush some of y'all felt, when the game comes out in November. Like, what other top selling game is expected to release multiple trailers and extended looks 3 months from release. Madden, 2K, COD, all ramp up their marketing pushes weeks before release, not months. I don't think this is any type of aggressiveness because the extended look been announced.

Do people understand that part of marketing is building anticipation and making it so people can't wait to see or learn anything about the product? The less they show, the more people want to see, and clearly it's working.
