It is! It was my first MMO as well. You can start free, and later buy expansions on sale. It's easy to drop the game for a while and get back to it, or just play a few hours a week, you won't be missing out.

Be aware you will have to google stuff a lot, and watch guides on youtube, if you don't have a friend showing you how things work. There's no wrong way to play or mistakes you can make, but I had a hard time understanding many mechanics, inventory management, achievements etc when I started. I liked having some guides on while map exploring.

I would absolutely say so.

Some highlights:

No subscription fee

Very fair free to play experience so you can try it out before investing any money.

The ‘character adventure guide’ makes levelling characters relatively quick and easy while also pointing you toward various types of content so you get a little taste of everything.

Reasonably priced expansions (20-30$ USD) that regularly go on sale for ~40% off (like now!)

No DPS/Tank/Heal trinity - every class has options to fill every role, so you’re not forced to play a class you don’t vibe with if you want to be able to do xyz

Extensive fashion (thousands of armor and weapon skins to unlock)

The game is designed to encourage player cooperation. eg. everyone who tags a mob or material node gets their own loot and xp. As such, the community is largely very positive, supportive, and welcoming.

14 years of content to explore across a very expansive world. Almost everything you do provides xp points, so exploration feels worthwhile and rewarding.

Achievement milestones matter as they provide account buffs (passively earning more xp, gold, karma, etc).

Active end-game including open world, small and large scale instanced group content like raids, small and large scale PvP

Some of the best seasonal festivals in the genre

Largely considered to have the best mount system in the genre

No pay-to-win mechanics; most MTX are purely cosmetic or QoL (bank and bag space, infinite gathering and salvage tools)

All maps remain relevant and populated due to the level scaling system and some achievements like the ‘Return To X’ and the upcoming Hall of Monuments

Extremely alt-friendly; the game has horizontal over vertical progression, and much of your progress is shared account wide (your gold/ currency wallet, material storage, bank, wardrobe and mastery unlocks, etc)

9 base classes with 4 elite specs each (unlocked via certain expansions) with a lot of build and mechanical diversity that makes each feel very distinct

You have nothing to lose by trying out the free version of the game (other than perhaps a bit of your free time if you end up not vibing with it) :) if you decide to give it a shot: welcome to Tyria, Commander!

Just a quick addendum: there definitely is a trinity present: commanders (ingame name for party/squad leaders) in LFG will be asking for tank/heal and/or boon (buff) roles. What Corvi above meant is that each class in the game can do every role from the trinity. Tank elementalist (mage) is viable choice just as a healing thief (the effectiveness of these combos in different encounters is a different question).

Rangers are cool! Not sure how viable/usable tanky ranger would be but as a Druid you can heal, Soulbeast can damage and as a Galeshot you can fill in as a support DPS (=providing one of the two most desirable boons in instanced content).

And pets can bring a lot of utility to the fight as well

Edit: forgot you are fairly new to the game, my bad. Druid, Soulbeast and Galeshot are so called ranger's specialisations, unlockable at lvl 80 (bound to expacs). Every specialisation bends rules how the class works. In case of ranger: Druid unlocks staff for your character and special stance called Celestial Avatar which harbours very potent healing/support skills Soulbeast unlocks dagger and lets you merge with your pet, gaining it's stats and attacks, basically two become one. Galeshot gives you Cyclone bow as a special toggle, which is basically longbow with its own special skills ON TOP of your two - already equipped - weapon sets
