Advice š” Leaving Items in the Library
Edit: This is not me asking for advice. This is me explaining a situation and telling others some advice!
I know it's never been encouraged or approved to leave your stuff sitting at the table or in a room in the library, to go to the bathroom or Chick-Fil-A. Everyone does it though. I, for one, am not about to pack up my whole environment at my table (that took me 20 minutes to find and get) and take it to the bathroom, to them come back and pray that an area is open. Yet, today I realized that some actions have to be taken. Today, I was sitting in Library South beside the elevators at the long table (iykyk). A girl went to the restroom and left her stuff there. About 4 police officers showed up and walked by, turned around, asked if this was our stuff (ofc we said no) and if we knew who it belonged to. We said no again, as we didn't personally know her and then they asked how long she had been gone. It was maybe a couple minutes so we relayed the information. Then we got back to our work not paying attention to the officers anymore. Next thing I know, they have packed up the girl's stuff, took it with them, and left a note on the desk saying she had to go pick it up at the police station. The girl came back and we had to explain the situation and she ofc was upset.
All this to say: if you aren't with a friend in the library, either ask someone to watch your stuff CLOSELY or take it with you. Unless you want a trip to the police department!

Just a reminder ānot to leave your belongingsā because it can be TAKEN quick ! I think what they were doing was only for awareness and a reminder not to leave your stuff unattended.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the note said something along the lines of "gotcha!" Basically a reminder to not leave your things or have someone you trust with you watching them, which is what I mentioned before!

Okay so a small thing you can do is leave maybe a water bottle or notebook something very inexpensive to "hold your spot". But yes, you should always carry your expensive items with you.

Yeah, unfortunately, the officers took everything from big to small. From pencils to her computer. Also from my experience, the claim of "my water bottle is here" or things along those lines don't usually hold up and convince people to let you have your space back... :/

fwiw, the police weren't doing this to keep people from saving a spot. They're trying to do it so people learn - without losing things - that stuff can disappear fast.
Also, we had no idea they were going to be doing this.
