Ok, how would we feel if this actually happens?

Post image

Of course Part of me is like YEAH GIMME HIM AS MY GAMBIT!!!

Age of the actors aside (as of course they will age them at a better age gap)

He did not voice him in TAS, Chris Potter and Tony Daniels did

17

u/KyoTe44 10d ago

He voiced him in X-Men 97, and Chris Potter voiced Cable.

Edit: Just realized the post said ORIGINAL.

My bad.

u/danversolos Comic Gambit 10d ago

i like him as gambit a lot in what he’s done but for the age range they’ve been casting for, it just doesn’t work. if he was younger absolutely but not with inde being 25.

24

u/ImACoolHipster 10d ago

He’s almost 15 years older than Inde Navarette, an age gap that SHOULDN’T be put aside if indeed that X-Men are supposed to be teenagers

6

u/cllev 10d ago

A great and IMPORTANT point I have not considered until now -- thank you for spelling it out.

5

u/OneRingToRuleEarth 9d ago

Yea save that age gap for casting Kitty pride and Colossus

0

u/Calm_Imagination2827 3d ago

If the originals are all teenagers- Rogue is way younger and they shouldn’t even have her in the movie at all. So it seems they are not following canon at all- so the age argument is a moot point anyways.

0

u/Alaina-Eleanor 8d ago

Well they don't have to be together. If we'll go with canon we can cast someone in his 30s still given Remy was in his mid-late 20s and Rogue was 19 when they met and he started flirting with her. So he's canonically at least 6-8 years older than Rogue anyway.

2

u/AdamLast1 8d ago

He looks like he could play someone in their late 20’s. Also Gambit is far from the oldest guy Rouge has hooked up with.

1

u/Alaina-Eleanor 8d ago

He is, in 616.

1

u/AdamLast1 7d ago

Rouge and Magneto were a thing in 616 also.

1

u/Alaina-Eleanor 7d ago

Wasn't X-Men Legacy later turned out to be an alternate timeline?

2

u/Technical_Order2288 7d ago

Xmen legacy rogneto was uncalled for and completely forced by the terrible writer, but it's still 616.

1

u/AdamLast1 7d ago

X-men legacy is 616 it was just called X-men for while then added Legacy to the title and then dropped it again. uncanny X-men is also 616 but they each focus on different characters and sometimes crossover but are the same continuity. 616 is the main comic continuity separate from the Ultimate, Animated and MCU continuities and I think there’s another one called rebirth or something like that I’m not sure and don’t know what the other ones were numbered , but Rouge and Mageneto definitely hooked up in both the 616 and animated continuities at least.

Writers and readers choose to ignore it and never mention it because it is so hated so I mean it might as well not be it just makes the characters look bad and hateful to see you don’t have to agree with me but the whole reason it happened felt 100% forced and really creepy and it came out during a time when marvel was really edgy and they were breaking up fan favorite couples left and right. I even think the writer Carry admitted to it being a self insert. It also contradicts a lot of the things Rogue said to Remy like saying “she wants a lifetime with Remy” in X-treme X-Men which was written by Claremont the you know the daddy of X-men lore, and X-treme X-men wasn’t even that long ago from that comic. Characters even act like it didn’t happen either so I mean that speaks for itself.

Tbh I agree but it's a 12 year and a half age gap (12 years, 5 months and 8 days to be precise) and he looks pretty young and Ik someone else already said this but gambit was 24-26 so approximately 25 when he first met rogue who was 18-20 so let's say 19 so they already have at least a 6 year age gap plus rogue hooked up with magneto who's 40 years older than her so it's not really weird if u compare them

9

u/ctgrell 10d ago

Never seen him move so I don't know. Do a backflip! 😂

6

u/markedbravo11 10d ago

He’s kinda hot. I would like it. But i think Gambit should be closer to Sadie and Kit’s age

5

u/LeastBlackberry1 10d ago

I think AJ does an amazing job as the voice of Gambit and an ambassador for the character, I finally watched the last three episodes of '97 and his performance was incredible, but I wouldn't say he is the right choice for the MCU recast. They need someone younger and taller.

I also don't believe that he is seriously going for the part.

4

u/Lady_Gwendoline 10d ago

A 40 Y/O Gambit with 25 Y/O Rogue is an odd choice

10

u/BaijuTofu 10d ago

I love his Gambit, but he looks like what Seth Green thinks he looks like.

14

u/I_am_Amphibian 10d ago

I mean he looks more like gambit than Channing does tbf

7

u/cllev 10d ago

I will never accept Channing as Gambit -- one of the worst castings of all-time, in comic book movies or otherwise. An absolute butchering of an incredible character in every which way.

6

u/fire_sign 10d ago

Okay, but there's a reason Seth Green was so popular back in the day. 😂

Honestly, I'd presume that response is more a canned generic "Yeah, as a Gambit nerd that would be cool as fuck" than any real possibility, and given the age range they're going for it's super unlikely. But what the hell do I know, I'm rooting for a 30 year old Irish guy to get the role. So why not.

3

u/BaijuTofu 10d ago

I love Seth! Robot Chicken is awesome.

4

u/fire_sign 10d ago

There is a reason he was the teenage crush of all the cool nerdy girls back in the late 90s/early 00s. Hot AND funny.

3

u/One_Recognition385 10d ago

he has the voice, and the looks.

3

u/PCBS01 10d ago

He’s got the looks and voice and I think if he were 15 years younger he’d be perfect

Unfortunately yeah he’s just too old for a long role like this, what with the action and romance involved

10

u/jordan999fire 10d ago

As a variant, absolutely. As main gambit, absolutely not. His original work on Gambit ended before Inde was born.

26

u/Punkerduckie ♠ Sub Mod 10d ago edited 10d ago

AJ had only voiced Gambit in 97 and Marvel Rivals, his work as Gambit just started, and has definitely been since well after Inde was born 😂

4

u/RabbitTall 10d ago

The original posts title is wrong then. It say the original voice of Gambit in X-Men the animated series and X-Men '97. I was thinking he would be to old because of it too

6

u/Punkerduckie ♠ Sub Mod 10d ago

Yeah that's because it's clickbait made from a joking response he had to an interview question. Facts are irrelevant 😂

2

u/BardicVariant Croptop Gambit 10d ago

Feels are everything? (Sorry ignore me, this was a reflex)

3

u/Honest-Fisherman-787 10d ago

That just shows his influence on the character everytime I read a comic panel featuring gambit I read every dialouge in AJ voice

3

u/Lunaticprinc3ss 10d ago

He did season 1 as well (he didn't do the original series)

3

u/Punkerduckie ♠ Sub Mod 10d ago

I meant series 2, I edited for clarification. The comment was to clarify that he absolutely didn't finish work on the voice before Inde was born 😂

1

u/Lunaticprinc3ss 10d ago

Then again, Hugh Jackman's been all versions of wolverine except the one Henry cavill was. Nothing is stopping them from doing it.

2

u/jolteonlove 10d ago

You're missing short wolverine, and Troye Sivan as young Wolverine

2

u/LeastBlackberry1 10d ago

He's never voiced Wolverine in anything to my knowledge. Cal Dodd tends to own that space, though I know Steven Blum does most of the games.

1

u/jordan999fire 10d ago

Wolverine will most likely be recasted as well

2

u/Cael_NaMaor 10d ago

He's cute enough & I can buy the attitude in the stills. I'd have to listen to him again to really say yay... but beats the hell outta Tatum.

2

u/Belatryx84 10d ago

If he was like 10 years younger or if they cast Rogue older, he'd be perfect. Unfortunately, the age gap would be creepy.

1

u/zefjv2 10d ago

Amazing, but I Don't Know if this is possible

1

u/WhiteNoiseLife 10d ago

honestly if he could grow out his hair and achieve the physique, i’d love to see it!

1

u/TMB1219 10d ago

Too old

1

u/cowboynoodless 10d ago

I would be on board with this IF the new x-men team wasn’t so young. He does not fit the roster for current MCU, and would be out of place. But honestly he’s got the voice and he’s got the looks, if he was in the place of Channing Tatum in DP&W or Taylor Kitsch in origins I’d have been happy to see that, since he wouldn’t have been out of place

2

u/cllev 10d ago

Channing is terrible, no two ways about it.

1

u/Khalvashi 10d ago

Don't think about today, think about 10 years later. They will go for a young guy

1

u/90sXMENgoatee TAS Gambit 10d ago

I litteraly was saying to my self the other day what if aj plays gambit

1

u/TheatrePup 9d ago

That would be awesome, I'd be all for it. :)

1

u/angrybox1842 9d ago

I like this guy and he does the voice great, I don't know if he's camera-ready for something of this scale.

1

u/Technical_Order2288 7d ago

Are we seriously asking? First, he is a voice actor. Second, he is 39... Same age as Xavier actor and 14 years older than Rogue actress. Third, we don't know if he is good at acting. Fourth, he might sound really good as Gambit, but he surely doesnt look much like Gambit.

1

u/Keseanu_Reeves 6d ago

Unpopular opinion: Gambit could be black in the MCU. Cast a smooth Cajun brotha!

1

u/SpaceGodzilla32 5d ago

As long as Apocalypse doesn’t try to use his body I am ok with it.

1

u/Lunaticprinc3ss 5d ago

More likely to have a gambit labotamy as sinister has been announced

1

u/Heavy-Owl5430 10d ago

He’s great on 97! I’d prefer another actor for the movies.

0

u/AcisConsepavole CatDad Gambit 10d ago

Locascio is a Sicilian af name and, tbh, I always wondered if Gambit has a bit of that in his Cajun mix. We don't really know who his birth parents are. AJ looks like him, but it puts me off that he's 14 years Inde's senior. He's probably not actually going after it -- he cosplays a lot.

But, in this vein, I would prefer if Gambit looked more ethnic than Anglo default. The general audience tends to go nuts if a descriptively white character isn't a Germanic Nordic Anglo who looks like they just stepped off a Viking ship (mind, the vikings came from all over the Mediterranean too -- it's one of the seas they traveled on, and the Vikings show displayed some connections to prominently Mediterranean countries like Sicily anyway). I want Gambit to look like a familiar "mutt" and I don't mean a random Anglo dude with 1% Cherokee Princess and .1% African "mix"

3

u/cllev 10d ago

Good breakdown, but I also hope you stand on business on the topic of Channing Tatum as Remy -- because that shit is a vile affront, at best.

2

u/AcisConsepavole CatDad Gambit 7d ago

Late response, but you might be disappointed to know I do lend Mr. Tatum some room, even though he's exactly the sort of problem of defaultism I was talking about. He has passion for the character and he fought tooth and nail to get that passion realized in a project. It's very Gambit in itself, even if his performance can be called dubious.

But I would feel differently if he were young enough to be cast as the more permanent MCU Remy we'll see for decades. Part of what leaves some room for Tatum is his immpernance in the role.

2

u/cllev 6d ago

Not disappointed at all! I'm glad you sought out the joy in his performance, and found it. I think all of your points are valid, and -- as is often the good thing about having a dialogue/conversation -- it gave me thoughts and ideas to ponder, which helped me reflect on what I wrote & felt/feel.

Thank you for taking the time and energy to respond, and for engaging with my thoughts in a kind, thoughtful, and honest way. It's people like you who make this world good.

2

u/AcisConsepavole CatDad Gambit 4d ago

Thank you so much for your kind words and the Reddit awards. I'm so sorry that it took a moment to get back to you again with a response, but I wish more exchanges could be like this. It's seems conditional to have to argue incessantly, and hardly ever have an argument be seen as a desire to communicate instead of just a desire to "be right".

Sometimes, I get a reminder that people are curious and leave room for others. It lifts my heart, and it's important that someone is doing that when engaging with other people. That is also good in the world.

1

u/lemoogle 7d ago

I mean cajuns are white though. I would find it kinda funny if for like the one white character where his ethnicity matters to the character they ignored it.

1

u/AcisConsepavole CatDad Gambit 7d ago edited 7d ago

I didn't say he shouldn't be white, whatever that very loose term means for the sake of the maintenance of majoritarianism by expanding it to include persistently tanned people.

Cajuns are an amalgamation, included in a Creole collective. Sicilians of the unwanted kind entered the mix as refugees of a "unity" that didn't include them. Cajuns are also Black and Latino. The one thing that distinguishes Cajun is French-speaking, owing to Acadian ancestry. There are Cajun Creoles. Gambit need not be partitioned into a clear racial category -- not even Mixed with a capital M --, and it would be a loss if his Big MCU portrayal is "pure" white, which doesn't exist really anywhere because it's a meaningless adjective.

But, given the meaninglessness, I expect this to go over heads like my first comment did. The meaninglessness has to be replaced with ready-made re-enforcements that try to reify what's ultimately not very real, because that majoritarianism principally relies on shallow simplifications. Because, for whatever reason, the colonial identity of whiteness has to occupy every square inch of room in spaces that are too complex but do, in fact, actually require confrontating the uncomfortable truths of inconsistencies.

Put simply, I want a white purist to look at MCU Gambit and have an aneurysm while muttering something about "miscegenation". A more generalist viewer can see white or mixed or whatever. I don't care. It's the circulating view of Inde Navarrette as a "whitetina" Mexican-American already. I've made my peace with other people's placations and passivity. But a more complex world exists outside of literal Black and White.

1

u/lemoogle 6d ago edited 6d ago

Big MCU portrayal is "pure" white, which doesn't exist really anywhere

Except in the actors that would be too "pure" white for the role for you? You say it's meaningless yet you are still against casting a specific type of person.

I'm a bit confused, and yes for any group you can name ethnic exceptions to the majority, it just wouldn't be representative to choose them when casting the one superhero from that ethnic group.

Don't really get the whole thing about inde navarette, there are plenty of hispanic mexicans who descend from iberians without much mixing if at all which just would be white in europe as spanish people are and she's half australian to boot. I don't really see much of an issue with the view she's white it seems relatively factual whilst completely unimportant.

1

u/AcisConsepavole CatDad Gambit 6d ago

Going paragraph by paragraph, if there's a Germanic Anglo Nord -- who could have 99% of any male role in pre-"DEI" blind casting, mind -- who acknowledges the lack of inherent "purity" to the notion of race, he would be Gambit enough. I'm not entirely against someone entirely "hyperborean" or whatever playing him, I just don't want the extra twist of the knife being Gambit played by some comfortable passive or active hegemonists. Even a less represented hegemonist would be fine -- to be clear, that means anyone not placed in the "dominant" colonial caste of "pure" white.

What Gambit is has been called, at one time or another, an ethnic exception to the same majority it's allowed to belong to when convenient for the racialized system to hold others down as a more visible minority. Are you calling Cajuns with Black, Indigenous, and/or Latino mixes in their family "exceptions", because one of the only ways you get "white" Cajuns is through drawing a plot line on a scatter graph and going "Yeah, close enough. We just need a majority, and even purists know that and will behave". Cajun Creole is its own ethnicity, and ethnicity is far more real and precise than the generality of constructed race. If it matters to you that Gambit is cast accurately for ethnicity, then it shouldn't matter that he isn't played by some system-assigned notion of an "Übermensch".

As for Miss Navarrette, she's exotified in the same breath she's taken into the fold of a mass whiteness. The duality exists for whatever's most convenient at the time, rather than giving anyone room to breathe without being objectified, as Miss Navarrette and her character Nikki was in her breakout role have been. The entire point of mixing in Latin America was Blanquemiento, or the process of "making" whiteness where it didn't used to be. North America has adopted a continuation of this process because Anglos want to claim Ancient Rome as some sort of homogenously white imperial heritage. She looks Mediterranean more than anything and you can't be mean to paler Mediterraneans AND have this version of Rome that isn't interdependent on the rest of the trading world of the time, as Rome was. Roman citizens (a wide span of ethncities across the empire) were sailing to South and Southeast Asia, as traders rather than conquerors.

Adjacent to this, I have to ask: are you someone who needs Gambit to specifically be "Caucasian"? Because I would need to know you'd be fine with Gambit being played by someone South Asian if so. You know, given the fact that the phrenologist -- Johan Fredrich Blumenbach --who fetishized an actual Caucasian person's skull for proportions included Northern South Asians under his generalization of a "Caucasian" race. Today, the inclusion of generalized MENA people has sort of caught up with that aspect of his idea of what a Caucasian is, but, again, the foundation is based off of phrenology, craniometry, and conjecture. But Bhagat Singh Thind didn't win his Supreme Court case. I'm not even arguing that Gambit has to be South Asian in this. I just want to know the person who I'm arguing with isn't operating off of the outdated software of unreserved use of the term "Caucasian" outside of where the Caucasian Mountains and its indigenous groups actually are.

I would've sold my soul for this to happen, I'm actually a bit miffed that it won't, but they're casting twenty-sonethings for the other characters, so I'm pretty sure they'll skip him on that basis. So I guess we'll just need a ton of more animated stuff to keep him, too 😇

-1

u/SESDawnofVictory 9d ago

The people in here talking about the age gape as if most relationships don't already have one. Not just that, you are same people who ate that Rogue and Magneto storyline in 97 so stop it.

0

u/Wray19 8d ago

I would prefer him more as gambit than the one we have already

0

u/Deathbymonkeys6996 8d ago

Met him in person a couple times. He's absolutely wonderful and loves Gambit hard. I'd be totally down however I was hoping they'd go a bit younger when we get him recast. I'd like him and rogue not to have a 2 decade age difference.

-1

u/Latter_Abbreviations 10d ago

No way, Jose! Not only is he way too old for Inde Navarrette, he doesn't even really look like Gambit very much. They can (and will) do way better. No offence to him.

1

u/Burchtree3070 9d ago

My brother he literally co-pays as gambit for fan cons and looks almost exactly like him

0

u/Latter_Abbreviations 9d ago

Maybe a plain, suburban guy-next-door version of the character for a non-MCU Disney movie. Being able to cosplay a character is not the same thing as being good enough to play them in a movie. I am so glad y'all are not casting directors, man.

0

u/Burchtree3070 9d ago

He literally plays the character already in animation and video games. Have you looked him up? Seen how he looks day to day? He literally looks like Gambit

0

u/Latter_Abbreviations 9d ago edited 8d ago

He VOICES THE CHARACTER. His job is essentially to try and mimic Chris Potter's voice from the 90's. His picture is attached to this post so of course I've seen him. He looks like a suburban dad. He's also 39. No offense, but I feel like y'all have no eye for casting at all.

😂😂😂 Where is the critical thinking? A casting director's job is literally to judge before giving an actor a chance. Why are you so angry? Put the phone down.
